United seeks a return to winning
ways in Chatham Cup battle
Premier rugby, hockey
and rugby league
take a break for King’s
Birthday weekend,
while the Chatham Cup
continues and the top
two teams in premier
1 netball face off in a
grand final rematch.
Jaime Cunningham
reports
FOOTBALL
Christchurch United will be
looking to get back to their winning
ways in the second round
of the Chatham Cup, when the
Southern League leaders take
on University of Canterbury on
Monday.
It follows their 1-1 draw
against Cashmere Technical on
Saturday, United breaking their
eight-game winning streak.
United head coach Paul Ifill
said it was a “pretty difficult”
first half, but the team felt confident
at halftime following a red
card being handed to Technical’s
Tom Schwarz.
“We created enough chances
to go out in front at halftime
though,” he said.
United’s Sam Philip was the
first to find the score in the 58th
minute from a Daniel MacLennan
cross.
But Ifill said United then “fell
into a hole,” while Technical
played like they had nothing to
lose.
Technical’s Garbhan Coughlan
evened the game up in the 76th
minute, before narrowly missing
a header in the dying minutes for
the win.
Both teams will now shift
focus for the second round of
the Chatham Cup this weekend
alongside Ferrymead Bays, FC
Twenty 11, Coastal Spirit and
University of Canterbury.
United and University of
Canterbury last clashed in April
in the first round of the English
Cup where United came up on
top 4-0.
“We really want a decent cup
run after being knocked out at
this stage last year,” Ifill said.
Nomads and Selwyn United
take a break after Nomads 3-1
win over Selwyn.
FC Twenty 11 face Bays following
their 6-0 thrashing against
Nelson Suburbs, while Cashmere
take on Coastal Spirit.
Both Bays and Coastal go into
their second round Chatham
Cup matches following wins over
Green Island (2-1) and Dunedin
City Royals (1-0) respectively.
NETBALL
A rematch of last year’s final
between Lincoln University A
and UC A headlines the final
games of the first round in premier
netball on Tuesday.
Although Lincoln University
A are unbeaten and comfortably
lead the points table, the return
of several Tactix and National
Netball League players to UC set
up a tight clash.
UC overcame the winless
Technical A 59-41 in round six,
boosted by the return of Vika
Koloto, Paris Lokotui and Parris
Peterra. Technical will have to
beat Kereru B to avoid dropping
to premier 2.
Lincoln University A stunned
Hearts St Peters A with a
dominant last quarter, extending
their four goal lead to a 45-31
win. Hearts take on Lincoln
University B in the last game
before the championship round.
Lincoln University B won their
fourth game of the season in a
tight battle against Kereru A,
53-49.
Kereru A take on Kia Toa A,
who may have avoided relegation
with their 44-42 win over Kereru
B in round six.
RUGBY
Sumner recorded a massive
comeback 47-36 win over Lincoln
University to claim the biggest
upset in the Metro premier
competition in round seven.
After trailing 24-0 at 30 mins,
Sumner looked headed for their
fourth loss of the season.
However, head coach Gareth
D’almeida said the Wave stuck
to their game plan in the second
half, which essentially won the
game.
“It was great to see the boys
come together and regroup,” he
said.
Sumner will challenge the
DCL Shield for the third time
this season against University on
June 10.
D’almedia said the extra incentive
adds a “bit of flavour” for
the game, but the team’s biggest
focus will be making the upcoming
playoffs in July.
“I think we still haven’t seen
the best of Sumner yet.”
University head into the clash
following a strong 34-19 win
over Linwood, while Lincoln
University will take on secondplaced
Marist Albion. Marist
narrowly beat Shirley 38-33.
Shirley and Linwood will contest
the Lionel Hunter Trophy on
June 10.
Burnside will look to avenge
their 34-30 loss to New Brighton
when they play the winless Belfast
next week.
New Brighton take on High
School Old Boys’ in round eight.
HSOB climbed into the top eight
with a 39-27 win over Sydenham
on Saturday.
Defending champions Sydenham
will play Christchurch, who
had their first win of the season
against Belfast, 28-18.
In the women’s premier
grade, the previously unbeaten
Christchurch suffered a 34-24
loss to University to tighten up
the table as finals loom.
RUGBY LEAGUE
The Linwood Keas will look
to refresh during this weekend’s
break before their match against
the Riccarton Knights in round
10.
After a seven-game winning
streak, the Keas suffered their
second straight loss to the
Hornby Panthers, 42-28.
A slow first half was again a
problem for the Keas, who lost
their first match to the Halswell
Hornets 18-8 in similar circumstances.
The Panthers dominated the
first half and led 32-6 at halftime.
Hornby held on for the wine to
move to 14 points alongside the
Keas as a result.
Linwood will look to return to
their winning ways when they
play the fifth-placed Knights on
June 10. However, the Knights
will be confident after their
upset 38-32 win over the Eastern
Eagles in round nine.
The fourth-placed Eagles play
the third-placed Halswell Hornets,
who recorded a 30-16 win
over the Northern Bulldogs.
A controlled first half for
Halswell again won the game
for the side, after leading 26-4 at
halftime. However, the Bulldogs
will take plenty of positives from
the game after a second-half
fightback.
The Bulldogs travel to Leslie
Park to take on the Panthers next
Saturday.
HOCKEY
As the Canterbury Premier
League grades head into the
midway mark of the season,
upsets have been hard to come
by as the top teams continue to
cement their places at the top of
the ladders.
Carlton Redcliffs and Marist
lead both standings following
round six wins before the long
weekend break.
George Baker netted an impressive
five goals in Marist’s 7-4
win over University on Saturday.
However, Marist will want to
concede fewer goals when they
take on table-leaders Carlton
Redcliffs on June 10.
Carlton go into the match
off the back of a 2-0 win over
fourth-placed Harewood, who
play Southern in round seven.
Avon notched their second win
of the season over HSOB/Burnside,
3-1, while Southern and
Hornby settled for a 2-2 draw.
In the women’s competition,
Carlton scrapped through for a
4-3 win over Harewood to stay
level with Marist at the top of the
table on 13 points.
Marist, who had a bye in
round six, will play Carlton when
hockey returns next week. Both
teams are yet to lose this season.
HSOB/Burnside had a strong
3-0 win against Avon on Saturday,
and moved to eight points.
Hornby managed their first
win of the season over Southern
3-0, and will play HSOB/Burnside
in round seven.
Meanwhile, Southern will
continue to search for their
first goal of the year against
Harewood.
