Fall foul of the law and you can be in big trouble, plus it’s not great marketing for your business. Our market, perhaps more than any other business sector, must constantly keep its fingers on the pulse of the latest changes in law. Gun industry laws are ever changing, making it difficult to stay on top of them all. This is particularly true for companies that export to many different countries – each with their own laws that have to be accepted. Retailers also battle with law change on a regular basis and smaller shops, with less staff, have a hard task on their hands to keep up, especially when trying to stay on top of all the other tasks needed to run a successful business. Let’s look at the USA as an example; each State has its own rules and regulations. In 2022 there were a lot of changes across a lot of US States. For instance, in the State of California, five Bills were passed which included restrictions on marketing firearms and stricter licensing procedures. Colorado brought in a strange Bill, prohibiting open carry near to polling locations, while Deleware introduced a package of measures to regulate high-capacity magazines and stiffer background checks. Over in New Jersey several Bills were signed, which included the regulation of handgun ammo sales and legislation allowing the State’s Attorney General to sue members of the firearm industry for violations stemming from the sale or marketing of firearms. More Bills were signed in Washington, Vermont, Rhode Island and Oregon, amongst others. This shows the scale of changes and certainly makes it difficult for retailers and manufacturers to keep on top but, crucially, plan for the future in terms of products to bring to market and to stock on retail shelves. Organisations such as the NSSF do a great job in helping businesses deal with the ever-changing landscape, so it always pays to become a member of your local shooting trade associations. Have a great trading month.
