Head’s Welcome
It is my great pleasure to welcome your family to Eltham
College Junior School for what I know will be an exciting
and rewarding partnership. From the moment your son or
daughter first arrives at our gates, they are embarking on a
life-long journey as an Elthamian, one filled with academic
challenge, personalised care and numerous opportunities,
alongside nurturing friendships and connections that will
last well beyond their school years.
Although the primary purpose of this booklet is to impart
important detail regarding routines and procedures, I wished to
include a few words about the experience of studying at the
College. Above all, the Junior School is a positive and purposeful
environment, seeking to motivate our children both inside and
outside the classroom and to instil in them values that will remain
with them for life. They are fortunate to be taught by members of
staff who are not only specialists in their respective fields, but
care about each child as an individual, taking the time to know
them well and respond to their needs.
Our students leave us for the next phase of their journey with an
enthusiasm for learning, the independence and resilience required
for adaptability, and a sense of responsibility towards others.
That next phase is a seamless move to the Senior School; as
Eltham College is one school, all students participate in a
comprehensive transition programme that ensures they are
familiar and comfortable with the staff, resources and
environment of the Senior section far in advance. Even once that
move is made, they will continue to see their Junior teachers
regularly and may choose to become mentors for younger
students, thereby supporting the next generation of Elthamians.
We are delighted you have chosen us.
Mrs VG Meier
Head of the Junior School

Lunches and Snacks
Lunches are available Monday to Friday in King George’s Hall, on
offer each day with an impressive choice of food. Menus are
available on the College website. You are strongly advised to take
this meal rather than bring a packed lunch. Lunches will be
charged on account automatically unless the Bursary is notified
(in writing) to the contrary. If you wish to cancel school lunches,
please write to the Bursary, providing half a term’s notice.
Students may bring in a small, healthy, nut-free snack for
morning break and one for after school if your child has a
co-curricular club. Each child should have a labelled water bottle
which can be refilled at water fountains and dispensers. The
sharing of snacks is not permitted due to the fact that other
students may have food allergies or intolerances. It is important
that the school is aware of any food allergies that your child may
have. Please be aware that, once informed, we cannot remove
allergy information from your child’s lunch menu provision
unless written confirmation is sent from a medical professional to
the nursing team.
Students are encouraged to drink water regularly throughout
the day.
Healthy Eating Guide
We advise that pupils bring snacks that are healthy and nutritious.
Popular choices include:
• Fresh or dried fruit
• Sandwiches or other filled bread
• Rice or corn cakes
• Crackers
• Yoghurts
Uniform
Outward appearance as well as demeanour and character can
reflect on the College as well as on the students. Students should
come to school and leave school smartly dressed every day. Our
pupils are ambassadors for the school when in public – please
ensure they set and sustain a good example of personal
smartness and individual behaviour.
Regulation clothing must be worn in school, on journeys to and
from school, on school occasions and whenever students
represent the College.
Sportswear must be brought to school on the appropriate day
and taken home afterwards, not left in school. You will be
advised which kit is required; more detail is provided on the
website, including which sportswear is needed each term.
All clothing, bags and equipment must be named.
Year 3 – 6 (Junior School) Uniform
All uniform and sportswear can be purchased from the school
supplier, Stevensons www.stevensons.co.uk
Further information can be found on the College website:
Further Information
Music
Information about Music at Eltham College Junior School,
including instrumental lessons and concerts, is available on the
College website:
www.eltham-college.org.uk/co-curricular/junior/music
Should you have any specific questions please email our Music
Administrator music@eltham-college.org.uk
Houses
The College has four houses: these are named, in keeping with
the school’s heritage, after missionaries: Carey (blue), Chalmers
(red), Moffat (yellow) and Livingstone (green). The House system
promotes a healthy competitive spirit based on a year round
programme of academic, athletic and artistic events. The four
houses are also involved in charitable fundraising activities.
Attendance
If your child’s journey to school has been delayed and they are
likely to arrive late please contact the Junior School Office on
020 8857 3457 or email juniors@eltham-college.org.uk
If a student is unwell, parents must notify the Junior School
Office before 8.30am on the morning of the absence and on
subsequent days. An email to your child’s Form Tutor is also
helpful. If a child does not appear at school and we have not
been notified, we will attempt to verify the absence of the
student by a phone call.
All students will participate in Games and PE lessons unless an
email from their parent is received.
Requests up to two days absence should be submitted in
advance by email to juniors@eltham-college.org.uk and their
form tutor.
All requests for a longer leave of absence should only be made in
exceptional circumstances and should be in writing to the Head
of Section (Mrs Chamberlain or Mr Wearmouth).
Homework
All homework is published digitally on satchelone.com for the
convenience of students and parents.
Books and Stationery
All textbooks are provided by the College but parents are asked
to see that their child has the following items of their own at the
beginning of term:
• Set of coloured pencils
• Set of felt-tip pens
• 2 pencils, sharpener, rubber and ruler (30cm, clear plastic
marked in mm intervals)
• Case/satchel large enough to accommodate A4 size paper
Medication
Inhalers, auto-injectors and regular medication are kept in the
Junior Medical Team’s room and administered as per written
instructions. It is vital that the College is kept informed of any
changes to your child’s medical information, via the medical
team email jsmt@eltham-college.org.uk
Personal Items
Footballs, tennis balls and other personal items may be brought
to school provided they are named and remain the
responsibility of the owner. The College has a stock of lunchtime
sporting equipment. Students should not bring toys, valuables,
money or electronic games into school. We do not allow
students to bring collectable cards into school. The College
cannot be held responsible for items that are brought in and go
missing at school.
Valuables
The staff will take all reasonable precautions to help students,
but they are personally responsible for their own property at all
times. We advise students not to bring valuable items into
school. They should be vigilant and sensible in the care of their
own property, and be wholly respectful and honest in their
dealings with other people’s belongings. All possessions should
be named. We advise against pupils wearing smart watches. If
one is worn, all functions except time telling must be disabled
during the school day.
Mobile Phones
Mobile phones may be brought to school for safety reasons by
pupils who travel by coach or by older students who walk or cycle
to school. They must be switched off during the day and not
used. Emergency calls can be made from the Junior School
Office. It is a good idea, if a mobile phone is brought in, that it is
an inexpensive one in case of loss or damage and should be
labelled with your child’s name.

Parking
Please park at the Senior School pick up and drop off area.
If it is necessary to park on Mottingham Lane, parents are asked
not to park their cars within the restricted area on either side of
the entrance. Please do not park across our neighbours’
driveways, perform u-turns in the lane or double park on
pavements opposite the College. The Junior School car park is
for staff use only.
School Coaches
Details about school coaches are available on the
College website here:
www.eltham-college.org.uk/admissions/school-coach-info
This service is managed by coachhire.com. If you need to cancel
a school coach, please contact them directly.
Lost Property
If your child has lost something they should:
• Check the Junior School Pavilion and Chalet at the
beginning or end of the day
• Check the lost property baskets on the ground floor of the
Junior School
• Check outside the Dining Hall (in the Old Quad)
• Write it on the list in their Form room
• If all of the above are unsuccessful, speak to the Form Tutor
At the end of each term, all unclaimed lost property is displayed
on a table in the downstairs lobby area of the Junior School.
Valuable items (e.g. watches, phones) are kept safely by
Mr A.Taylor, not stored in lost property.
Communications
I need to contact the College about something; what is the
best method?
If it is regarding your child’s academic work, please contact the
teacher concerned and/or their Form Tutor. A list of all staff email
addresses is on the College website here:
If you have any pastoral/wellbeing questions about your child,
please contact the Form Tutor or Head of Year.
If you have any questions about day to day events e.g. fixtures,
music concerts, etc., please check the College website.
If you have any questions about financial matters please contact
the Bursary.
When is it appropriate to telephone the College?
• In the case of sickness or late arrival
• If you are delayed collecting your child at the end of the
school day
Sport
Every student is expected to take part regularly in Games and
Physical Education, unless excused on medical grounds.
Representative Games fixtures, House matches, Games
coaching, meetings and activities or College societies can take
place outside of school hours.
Parents can view their child’s timetable on the Parent Portal area
of the College website or SOCS. This will include the schedule for
Games and PE/Swimming sessions.
The correct kit must be brought to school on the appropriate
days and taken home for laundering regularly. Students may not
participate in Games or PE lessons without the appropriate kit for
safety and hygiene reasons.
We endeavour to include as many students as possible in our
sports programme but necessarily select school teams by ability
according to the strength of the opposition.
Games bags should be taken directly to the Junior School
Pavilion or adjacent Chalet on arrival at school on Games day.
PE/Swim bags go directly to the Chalet on arrival.
We value “participation for all” and “excellence in achievement” in
equal measure. Students are usually grouped according to ability
in Games sessions and Senior School Games staff teach Junior
School Games sessions on a regular basis.
Sports Fixtures
Sports fixtures will be listed in the school calendar and on the
College website. If your child is playing in a match you will receive
a school post email containing all the relevant information.
If there are any changes to the published arrangements or the
match is cancelled on the day, you will be notified by text and/
or email.
If you have any questions about sport, please contact the lead
member of staff for the year group or Mr O’Dwyer, Assistant
Director of Sport and Head of JS Co-curricular.

Computing
Growing up in a digital world means that our children have been
exposed to technology from a young age and their enthusiasm
for it is evident.
Most students are confident at using touch screens and tablets
but may lack confidence when using a keyboard, mouse or
trackpad. In the Junior School, students use a range of devices
across the curriculum; to prepare your child for this we advise
practising a few key IT skills with them.
• Explore the difference between turning off a tablet/iPad to
shutting down a laptop/desktop computer.
• Explore how to use a mouse or trackpad and discover the
difference between left and right clicking.
• Familiarise themselves with a keyboard. They could begin
learning to touch type on the BBC Dancemat website:
www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zf2f9j6/articles/z3c6tfr
• How to navigate between windows using the minimise and
maximise functions.
• Learn how to use Google Search.
• Explore the difference between saving and opening
a document.
