Plan to combat
harbour hoons
• By Heidi Slade
AN ACTION plan to identify
and deter “anti-social” driving
on Banks Peninsula has been
created after a meeting over the
issue.
Community leaders, police,
city council staff and residents
met on Friday to create a list
of action points to tackle the
ongoing problem on the roads
around Lyttelton Harbour and
the surrounding
bays.
Said Banks
Peninsula city
councillor Tyrone
Fields: “It’s
really ruining
of life.
“Somebody is
going to get hurt.”
The plan includes borrowing
cameras from Waka Kotahi New
Zealand Transport Agency to
identify drivers, city council staff
investigating speed limits in the
area and more police visibility
on the roads.
Sergeant Anna Partridge was
at the meeting and said it was
positive to see people working
together to solve the issue and
support residents.
together,” she said.
“I don’t think we’ll be able to
solve the issue, but everyone
has a better understanding of the
role they can play.”
Cass Bay resident Scott Adams
said “good progress” was made
at the meeting.
He felt having the support of
community leaders may help
combat anti-social driving.
SERVE: The Sumner Tennis and Squash Club wants to build
new courts on red zone land on the corner of Nayland St and
Heberden Ave.
Tennis club aims
for two new courts
• By Heidi Slade
VACANT RED zone land could
be used by the Sumner Tennis and
Squash Club for two new tennis
courts, which would be open to the
public.
The courts would go in on
the corner of Nayland St and
Heberden Ave.
The courts, which would include
landscaping and fencing, are
expected to cost about $250,000.
The club intends to cover
costs through existing funds,
fundraising and potential funding
applications.
“We’re lucky to have a bit of
money in the bank,” club treasurer
Nelson Glass said.
The additional courts would
help the club clear its waitlist and
create more space for its large
events like tournaments. It would
also provide free courts for the
community to use.
Last week the club asked the
city council if it could lease the
land long-term.
“It looks like we can get the
land,” Glass said.
The club will now consult with
its members and work towards a
definitive plan for the project.
