Failures of pumps and irrigation
lot of time, restrict pasturegrowth and
createstress.
Regular equipment checks and ongoing
maintenance is vitalinpreventing
breakdowns, and reducing the chance of
serious damage.
Havingaweeklyormonthly,and an
annualtask list for irrigation
maintenance, whereyou can check tasks
off easily, ensuresmaintenance is kept uptodate.
Below is asummary of some essential
maintenance procedures for most
irrigation systems.
Arrange an annual maintenance check
by the supplier, for travellingirrigators.
Check majoroverhaul needs: usually
every 10,00020,000 hours of operation.
withborder dyke irrigation, review
performanceand the need to redevelop
border strips and levels.
First irrigation
At the pump:
Ensuresurface pumpsare primed.
Fill mainline slowly.
Take andrecordinitial flow readings,
operatingpressures and ampmeter
readings–these will serve as benchmarks
for the rest of the season
listen for any unusualnoise.
Check all pressure and/orflow switches
whichcould have been damagedover the
winter.
checkany leaking seals,joints or glands.
Check suction screens and surface
watertakes. If auto clean, ensure it works.
At the irrigator:
Grease pumpand motor.
Check operating pressuretocompare
with initial readings or specifications.
Check sprinklers for condition, rotation,
blockage, wear and tear.
