‘I order you to sit down!’ the king thundered. He demanded
obedience, but he was good, so he ordered the obvious and the
reasonable.
On this asteroid, however, there was no one else besides the king.
‘Sire, what do you reign over?’ asked the Little Prince.
‘Over all things’, the monarch replied, ‘Over the universe, the other
planets, everything.’
‘Can you order the sun to set?’ the child asked.
‘It would be like asking a person to fly like a butterfly. We must
demand from each only what each can give’, the king declared,
‘That is why everything obeys me.’
Surprised by the strangeness of grown-ups, the Little Prince
resumed his journey.
