IT IS SET TO be a whirlwind
next two months for water polo
player Aggie Weston as she jets
across the world to represent
New Zealand.
Weston, 18, will compete
at the ANOC World Beach
Games in Bali next month and
under-20 water polo world
championships in Portugal in
September.
The Rangi Ruru Girls’ School
year 13 student was recently
named top goal scorer at the
National Water Polo League
where Canterbury claimed
bronze.
Weston captained the Rangi
Ruru team to a fifth place finish
at the New Zealand secondary
schools’ water polo championships
in April. They were the
top South Island school at the
tournament.
Weston was the team’s most
valuable player at the South
Island tournament earlier this
year. She is also the school’s
head of sport.
Rangi Ruru director of sport
Mandy Anderson
said Weston
has been a key
player in the
senior A team
for five years and
is a “stunning”
player to watch.
“Her power,
strength and
speed in the
water is impressive. Aggie
has been a member of the
Canterbury women’s team for
past three seasons and recently
took out top goal scorer in the
National League, assisting her
team to a bronze medal – the
first medal at a senior women’s
level for many years for the
manager. Weston is part of
Concerns
over pupils’
safety
drives
upgrade
of busy
roundabout
• By Briar Allen
A BUSY roundabout will get
an upgrade after concerns were
raised about school pupils’ safety.
Speed safe cushions, which
are padded bumps used to slow
traffic, will be trialled at the
pedestrian crossing points and
approach to the Waimairi Rd/
Grahams Rd roundabout in
Burnside.
Pedestrian rails will also be
added to the islands and cycle
sharrow markings
will be put in.
Westburn School
principal Susan
Jennison has raised
safety issues with
children walking,
cycling and
scooting through
the intersection.
A Waka Kotahi
Susan
Jennison
NZ Transport Agency analysis
was used to identify 13 recorded
crashes at the intersection
since 2013. Six of them resulted
in minor injuries, while four
involved people walking and
cycling. One of the main safety
concerns was around crossing
Grahams Rd north of the
intersection where there are two
lanes and vehicles turning left at
speed.
Changes proposed for roads as
cruising bylaw gets updated
• By Briar Allen
BELFAST AND Harewood
residents have been listened
to, with restrictions set to be
changed on five roads.
It is proposed Blakes Rd in
Belfast is removed from the Prohibited
Times on Roads register,
while the full length of Lakes
Way, Outlook Pl, Lakeside Pl and
Jet Pl in Harewood are added.
The removal of Blakes Rd
means driving restrictions on
the road will cease, due to the
development of the residential
area.
The roads being added to the
register are due to concerns
about boy racers and would prohibit
vehicles between 10pm and
5am, with some roads potentially
prohibited seven days and others
on selected days.
City council transport operations
manager
Stephen Wright
said Blakes Rd was
in a rural area, but
recent subdivision
development
meant it was now
Stephen
Wright
used to access residential
properties.
“This means it is
no longer appropriate for the city
council to prohibit night-time
vehicle access, as residents need
to access their homes,” he said.
Wright said the roads were
identified by community board
members, by the public, through
concerns and complaints, by city
council staff and by the police.
“The roads tend to be in
secluded areas where there is a
history of people gathering to
watch or take part in risky or
unsafe driving, such as burnouts
and street racing, in industrial or
rural-city fringe areas.”
He said the city council is also
looking to modernise and update
the Cruising and Prohibited
Times on Roads Bylaw.
“There have been changes
in the last decade. The bylaw
aims to reduce dangerous
and antisocial vehicle-related
behaviour on our roads, and
enables the police to take
certain enforcement actions,
complementing other powers
they have.”
Waimāero Fendalton-
Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board member
Jason Middlemiss said both the
removal and addition of the
roads will have a
huge impact on
the area.
He said it would
give residences in
the commercial
areas peace of
Jason
Middlemiss
mind, knowing
they could call
the police, which
could enforce
ROADS: Blakes Rd is one
of five roads in Belfast
and Harewood set to have
restrictions changed.
the bylaw.
Middlemiss also said the
removal Blakes Rd would help
stop traffic building up and
benefit those in the residential
area.
The city council has opened
the plan to the wider public for
consultation, with submissions
closing on July 25. Submissions
can be made via the city council
website.
It is anticipated a decision
will be made on the final bylaw
before the end of the year.
DRIVER EDUCATION
Speed cushion trial for
Waimairi Rd intersection
•From page 1
Jennison said the school
undertook a travel plan with
the city council after concerns
were raised by parents.
“Some of our youngest pupils
walk to and from school. If
they’re coming from homes to
the north of the Grahams Rd/
Waimairi Rd roundabout, they
have to cross at the roundabout
itself as Waimairi Rd’s
northern footpath ends before
Raxworthy St.”
Jennison said nearby
shrubs can reduce visibility
at the roundabout and bad
weather puts drivers under
pressure.
“Young children don’t always
behave predictably and aren’t
able to anticipate the speed
at which drivers travel, so we
sought to identify a solution
that allowed traffic to flow
steadily but also protected our
young people.”
Aside from the speed
cushions, the Waimāero
Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
has identified another possible
solution.
City council staff discussed a
trial closure of the left turning
lane from Grahams Rd. But
the board members were not
happy to progress with this
BUSY: Safety improvements will be made at the Waimairi/Grahams Rds
intersection.
option as it could potentially
cause delays for motorists.
Jennison said their
aspirations goal was to
have traffic lights installed at
another local intersection but
said the instalments at the
roundabout are a great start to
making their pupils’ journey to
school safer.
“We appreciate that this
solution might not be every
driver’s preference, but the
parents and staff at our school
who visit the roundabout to
support students’ crossing are
delighted that this action has
been taken.”
Waimairi Ward city
councillor Sam
MacDonald said the
steps to make the
intersection safer,
particularly around the
school, were sensible.
“It is the right thing
to do. I don’t think
people will find this
unreasonable. It makes
it safer for school children and
lets traffic flow.
“If they don’t work, then it
seems sensible to remove the
changes without it costing an
Sam
MacDonald
arm and a leg and look at using
it somewhere else. It is a bit of a
balancing structure.”
The speed cushion
trial is set to last six
months. City council
transport operations
manager Stephen
Wright said the project
will cost $64,858, which
includes the cost of
removing them if the
trial is unsuccessful. Once the
six months are up a report to
the community board will
include additional data and
community feedback.
STUCK IN: More than 100 volunteers helped plant native trees at Engelfield Reserve over
the weekend.
Planting day success
• By Briar Allen
NORTHWOOD has become
greener, with 2000 native trees
planted.
The trees were planted at
Engelfield Reserve on Sunday as
a collaboration between Green
Gear, Trees for Canterbury and
Styx Living Laboratory Trust.
Trees for Canterbury manager
Steve Bush said the event had
a great turn out, with plenty of
people helping.
“The day was awesome, we had
more than 100 people attend the
planting with a great compliment
of volunteers from Treetech
there,” he said.
Bush said the weather was
cold, but the sun was shining and
families got stuck in.
“It was great to see a lot of
families out on the day. The
children not only planted but
gathered all the used plant pots
and crates the trees came in so
that they could all be reused.”
He said they managed to get
1500 of the 2000 trees planted
on the day, with staff from Styx
Living Laboratory Trust heading
back on Monday morning to
plant the last 500.
change at age 10 and was so
appalled she decided to do
something about it.
Beginning by making
small, everyday changes
such as what she ate and
how she travelled, her passion
Waimakariri, including Woodend to Kaiapoi/Woodend to Pegasus
cycleways, wayfinding for the new walking and cycling connections,
and completing gaps for on road cycle lanes in Rangiora
Work on a $41 million project to improve road safety in Waimakariri
began in December 2022. $35 million of this will go towards the stretch
of SH1 between Saltwater Creek and the Cam River/Ruataniwha. These
safety improvements, including flexible median barriers and wide
centrelines, will help reduce the risk along this increasingly busy
highway corridor
Completed the $290 million Northern Corridor motorway and shared
path to connect the Waimakariri district to St Albans in December 2020
New pyjamas for kids in need
• By Heidi Slade
CHOLMONDELEY
Children’s Centre has received
a donation of more than 200
pairs of brand-new winter
pyjamas and multiple pairs of
slippers, for a second year in
a row.
The Governors Bay charity
has been operating for 98
years and provides temporary
emergency and respite care for
children in need.
Donated by
the Kindness
Collective
Foundation,
the pyjamas
and slippers
“take a
Lisa Hurry
massive
weight off
our overhead
costs,” Cholmondeley practice
manager Lisa Hurry said.
“We are an organisation
that’s 80 per cent funded by
the community.”
Hurry said the donation
was part of a Kindness
Collective initiative, which
runs annually.
The collective is a
nationwide charity that
provides children and their
families with the items they
need, like pyjamas and
slippers.
“Every year they have a
pyjama drive,” Hurry
said.
DONATION: Thanks to the Kindness Collective Foundation, 200 pairs of brand-new
winter pyjamas have been donated to Cholmondeley Children’s Centre.
Community groups donate
the pyjamas to the collective,
which then distributes
them.
Over the past three years,
the collective has distributed
more than 25,000 pairs of
warm winter pyjamas to
children in need.
Hurry said a portion of the
pyjamas and slippers would
stay at Cholmondeley for
children when they come for
temporary stays.
The remainder would go
back with children to their
families, for them to keep.
“When children come
and stay with us, we provide
everything they need to stay,”
Hurry said.
“A lot of these children
might not have pyjamas.”
Hurry said Cholmondeley
currently supports about 350
children and their families,
and over 30,000 children
have come through the
centre during its 98 years of
operation.
Thursday July 6 2023
“A lot of people have a
story or a connection to
Cholmondeley,” she said.
“And we can’t do it without
the community.”
The centre thrives off
initiatives like its annual
Giving Day, when donors
match all donations made to
the centre.
This year, the Giving Day
raised more than $50,000
with its donors Christchurch
Casino, United Fisheries and
Oakridge Homes.
HEADING
FOR AN
FUTURE
If you haven’t already been in a
discussion where Artificial Intelligence
and its consequences were part of the
narrative then, I can assure you, it
won’t be long before you will be.
Artificial Intelligence or ‘AI’ (or ‘ChatGPT’,
in its latest, extraordinarily popular,
iteration) put very simply and in layman’s
terms involves the simulation of human
intelligence processes by computer-based
systems.
It’s not a completely new phenomenon,
as many of us already utilize technologies
that allow for this, such as when we access
face recognition on our phones or summon
up the ever helpful and obliging Suri for
Apple or Alexa for Amazon. But the scope
for AI to be used to a much greater level is
enormous.
You see, it can undertake huge numbers of
tasks and processes, including repetitive
ones, with the benefit of never experiencing
fatigue. It can analyze, categorize and
classify millions of data points which, when
applied in different circumstances, can
solve complex problems, thus making daily
lives easier.
But with this ability and prescribed benefit
there’s also a deeper question. If it can do
all these tasks, what does that mean for
the people who are currently doing them
or parts of them? And that’s a big question
being asked in tearooms and boardrooms
everywhere.
I recently received a local building products
information booklet which had as a
headline “Is Artificial Intelligence a threat
to your job?” and it quoted a Goldman
Sachs report from March of this year that
suggested up to 300 million jobs in America
and Europe could be affected in the future.
This suggests a kind of future none of us
would happily envisage.
It didn’t provide a timeline for this to start
happening, but even posing the question
sends shivers down numerous spines,
including my own. The reassuring point the
article did make, however, and additional
research supported, was that “critical
decision-making, creativity, problemsolving,
collaboration and activities that
require human judgment and adaptability
can’t be duplicated.”
The very things that make humanity unique
also remain the most difficult to duplicate
despite the power of millions of algorithms
doing their thing – and we can be grateful
for that. Currently I’m seeing the use of AI
in our own industry in written applications,
where a quick question to ChatGPT is able
to produce smart advertising text, property
summaries and reports that look and sound
both accurate and polished, a far cry from
some of the ones I’ve read over the years.
So that’s a positive whilst I wait to see how
else we will utilize the varying technologies.
A quick Google search suggests the kinds of
occupations that have reason for concern
in the future and given I have colleagues
and friends in such roles I’m choosing not
to highlight them. Safer from AI dominance
are positions like plumbers, painters,
barbers, athletes and anything where
creative thinking, good judgement, cultural
nuance and the ability to read human social
clues is needed.
At the moment I like to think that’s where
other real estate professionals and I are
currently found, but we now know you can
never, ever sit still for too long.
HEAR AGAIN are proud to bring a world first to New Zealand.
A leading Danish hearing aid manufacturer has recently
launched a range of hearing aids that provide the most natural
listening experience ever. Even a great hearing aid has always
sounded like a hearing aid until now.
The revolutionary new devices change the game to deliver the
most pure, natural sound ever. Typically, sound processed in
a hearing aid reaches your eardrum later than sound heard
directly; when these two ‘out of sync’ signals mix, you get an
artificial sound. This has been a problem for many years!
Pies: A Kiwi tradition re-imagined
Wendy Morgan parents
founded the popular
Hillyer’s Bakery in
Lincoln. She tells the
story of the bakery in
her new cookbook, Who
Made All the Pies: The
ultimate collection of
pastry treats for every
Kiwi household – and
shares some of her
family’s favourite recipes
PIE TIME:
Wendy Morgan’s
new cookbook
includes
delicious apricot
and rosemary
pies.
While Morgan includes a
chapter on making different
kinds of pastry for pies, she
does say ready-made pastry is a
good convenient product and if
it means someone gets to make
a pie from the book they would
otherwise be too time poor to do
then “I say go for it”.
Flaky pastry 1
225g butter, room temperature
firm
300g high-grade white flour
Pinch salt
185ml cold water
Directions
Rub 30g of butter into the
flour and salt by hand, or use an
electric mixer.
Add the cold water and bring
together to form a soft dough.
Wrap the dough in cling film
or baking paper and rest in the
fridge for 10 minutes, then roll
out to a 40 x 20cm rectangle.
Break the remaining butter
into small pieces and dot it over
two-thirds of the rectangle. Fold
the plain third of the pastry
over to the centre. Then fold the
buttered third over to make a
square. Give the pastry a quarter
turn on the bench.
Gently roll the pastry out.
Start by pushing down with
the rolling pin. Roll out to 50 x
16cm then repeat the same fold
sequence as before.
Wrap the pastry in cling film
or baking paper and rest in the
fridge for 20 minutes.
Repeat the rolling out and
folding sequence five more times,
resting the pastry in the fridge
each time.
Apricot and rosemary
pies
Makes 12 in a muffin tin
Ingredients
250g dried apricots
½ cup white sugar
2 cups boiling water
3 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp chopped fresh rosemary
1 quantity flaky pastry
1 egg
Demerara sugar
To serve:
Vanilla ice cream
Directions
Put the apricots and sugar into
a glass or stainless-steel bowl
and pour the boiling water over
them. Cover with cling film and
leave overnight.
The next day, preheat the oven
to 170 deg C fan bake.
Pour the apricots and juice
into a ceramic dish, cover with
aluminium foil and bake for 1.5
hours, stirring every half hour.
Add the lemon juice for the last
half hour and the chopped fresh
rosemary for the last 10 minutes.
Leave the mixture to cool.
Turn the oven up to 210 deg C
fan bake.
Cut two-thirds from the
pastry block. On a lightly floured
bench, roll to 3mm thick and,
using a 10cm round cutter, cut 12
rounds. Place these bases into the
muffin tin. Fill each base with 1
tablespoon of apricot mixture:
there should be just enough mix
for the 12 pies. Roll the last third
of pastry out until large enough
to cut twelve 6cm rounds. Place
these on top of the pies.
Whisk the egg and egg-wash
the top of the pies. Cut some
airholes in the pastry with the tip
of a sharp knife. Sprinkle the top
of the pies with demerara sugar.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until
dark golden and puffy. Cool on
a rack if not eating them straight
away. Serve with vanilla ice
cream.
HOME & HEATING
Get the balance
right this winter
Enviro Master has been helping Cantabrians
get the balance right when it comes to
choosing the perfect heat pump or air
conditioning system for their home or office
since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people, qualified
electricians, heating and refrigeration
engineers, help to supply and install
Christchurch’s widest range of heat pumps,
and because they have no affiliation with any
one brand, you can be assured their advice
on the benefits and differences between each
product is unbiased.
They will recommend the most energyefficient
and cost-effective system for your
individual situation, and will have you
regulating the heat in your home or office in
no time.
Nowadays, customers are often wanting
whole home solutions to be able to maintain
even temperatures throughout the home both
in Winter and Summer. This can be achieved
by using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in designing,
installing and commissioning these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy covering 80 per cent of
the cost of a new heat pump up to $3000.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer Kiwi
Homes initiative and is available to Home
owner/occupiers with a Community Services
Card, a SuperGold combo card or who live in
a low-income area as determined by deciles
8-10 on the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
The applicant’s home must also have been
built before 2008, have insulation up to code
(insulation subsidies also available) and have
no fixed heating in a living area, such as an
existing operational heat pump or fireplace.
With new regulations now in place for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s
time to ensure you are meeting the new
standards.
Inadequate heating and ventilation can
lead to mould growth and dampness in your
property, leading to costlier maintenance
and an unhealthy living environment.
Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat
output and lower running costs, like a heat
pump, will enable your tenants to heat the
area effectively. Enviro Master are well
experienced with the Tenancy Services
software to ensure that you are meeting your
requirements.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have. This
consultation is at no cost to the customer
and is always provided before a heat pump is
installed.
Anyone wondering about their eligibility
for a subsidised heat pump are welcome to
get in touch for details and help with the
application process. To find out more, call
Enviro Master on (03) 366 0525 or visit
their website www.enviromaster.co.nz
Keep cosy with
RD Petroleum
this winter
RD Petroleum (RDP) is a familiar sight
for farm and rural residents around the
Canterbury region, however now days urban
residents also enjoy the same excellent
customer service for which RDP is known for
in rural communities, through their home
heating diesel.
RDP began its home heating diesel delivery
service to the lower South Island’s main urban
centres of Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin
and Invercargill a number of years ago.
Customer demand has continued to increase
year upon year, and RDP has responded
with specialised improvements to its delivery
equipment.
The trucks that deliver RDP’s home heating
diesel in each urban centre are drawn from
the company’s extensive vehicle fleet. This
means they have the latest communication
and GPS tracking technology on board, so
the operations team always know where they
are and how far away they are from their next
delivery stop.
RDP’s home heating diesel trucks come
equipped with a specially-designed hose,
through which the diesel is pumped from
the truck into house tanks. The length of
the hose allows the trucks to access tanks
without having to enter the property, avoiding
damaging the driveway. RDP is the place to
go if you require diesel conveniently delivered
to your home and as a loyal RDP customer
you’re offered discounted pricing and can
become eligible for value-added benefits.
For all enquiries please phone
0800 44 00 14, or visit the RDP website at
Skoda’s Scoutline a stylish addition
SKODA HAS created a Scoutline
version of the Kamiq, its smallest
SUV, to help raise the profile
and sales of a model that’s flown
under the radar of buyers since
debuting here three years ago.
The Scoutline adds more visual
punch to the bland-looking
Kamiq compact urban SUV. It
does this with matte black wheel
arch liners, silver bodywork elements,
17-inch alloy wheels and
full-LED taillights.
Firing the opening and fairly
pricey salvo in the two-model
Kamiq catalogue is the $39,990
Scoutline being reviewed here.
Filling the closing chapter is the
flagship $48,990 Monte Carlo
version.
Powering the Scoutline is a 1.0
litre turbo petrol. Exclusive to
the Monte Carlo is a nippy and
eager to please 110kw 1.5 litre
turbo petrol engine.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
The spirited 85kw threecylinder
turbo-charged motor is
a little belter, and its distinctive
three-cylinder throb music to
the ears to anyone who appreciates
cool sounding engines. A
favourable power-to-weight ratio
added a keener edge to the test
vehicle’s acceleration.
For a smallish SUV, this one’s
easy and effortless to drive at
open road speeds. A smart
7-speed tiptronic auto utilises
two clutches to consistently deliver
swift decisive gear changes.
A cabin that’s as spacious as
you’ll find in the compact urban
SUV market segment is a real
bonus, along with an elevated
driving position offering excellent
all round visibility. Rear
room legroom is better than a
vehicle of this size has a right to
be. A generously proportioned
400-litre boot is extendible that
can almost be trebled in size
with the 60:40 split rear seat
backrests folded down.
The white, red and orange
LED ambient lighting puts on a
cool colour show, illuminating
the centre console, door storage
compartments, door handles
and foot well. LED reading lights
are standard and you can opt
for a black roof lining. Staying
in touch is well sorted with
built-in SmartLink technology
for connecting devices via Apple
CarPlay, Android Auto or Mirror
Link.
Simply Clever is Skoda’s
marketing is battle cry. In this
vehicle there is plenty of evidence
of that. The umbrella compartment
(including umbrella) is in
the driver’s door, and there’s an
ice scraper in the fuel filler flap.
This is more pure genius than
simply clever.
The test vehicle was laden with
safety features. Among the more
innovative are Lane Assist, City
Emergency Brake, Driver Fatigue
Alert, and Cruise Control. Using
a camera, Lane Assist recognises
road markings and helps the
driver to keep to their traffic
lane.
The Kamiq rides confidently,
offering the benefits of an SUV
with the agile driving characteristics
of a compact car. It shares
the same platform as the Skoda
Scala hatch. There are important
points of difference between this
pair. The Scoutline, for instance,
has longer springs and shock
absorbers, a stiffer stabiliser for
the front axle and a reinforced
rear axle.
Spring and damper rates are
tuned to soak up even the worst
bumps and potholes. Over
undulating roads the test vehicle
remained steadfastly calm and
composed. It’s not all perfection,
with the steering a ‘work on’. In
its current form it lacks the road
feel, deft weighting and all round
polish and finesse of some of its
better rivals.
