Murder
accused’s
journey
to be a
mother
LAUREN DICKASON’S journey
to become a mother and long
battle with depression and anxiety
has been canvassed at her trial
for the murder of her three young
daughters.
Her husband has outlined how
the now-42-year-old underwent a
total of 17 gruelling rounds of IVF
and eventually used donor eggs to
have their children.
He said the
DNA of the girls
made “no difference”
to the
couple and his
wife was “a loving
mother”.
Dickason has
admitted killing
6-year-old Liané
and 2-year-old
Lauren
Dickason
twins Maya and Karlaat their
Timaru home on September 16,
2021.
She is on trial before Justice
Cameron Mander and a jury of
eight women and four men in the
High Court at Christchurch.
She killed the children just
20 minutes after her husband
Graham Dickason left their home
to attend a work function.
And the 20-year-old from
in the United Kingdom,
featuring in The Sun.
Oakley Inkersell dropped his
“I was shocked, it was awesome,”
Inkersell told The Star
Inkersell plans to take his
While many fans
Oakley decided to show the
He explained: “I just started
Mayor Phil Mauger says
Christchurch and New Zealand
should share hosting the 2026
Commonwealth Games after
Victoria pulled out due to
ballooning costs. The Australian
Christchurch already had lots
of facilities to enable it to host
the games in three years, and
the city’s stadium and Metro
Sports facility would be finished
by then. Events could be shared
with other venues around New
She tried to asphyxiate them using
cable ties and when that did not work,
smothered them with blankets then tucked
them into bed with their favourite soft toys
and tried to take her own life.
The Crown alleges Dickason murdered
the girls in a calculated and clinical way
because she was angry and frustrated with
them and resented the impact they had on
her marriage.
While she admits she killed the three
children, she has pleaded not guilty by
reason of insanity and infanticide.
In court yesterday defence lawyer Anne
Toohey began cross-examination of the
grieving father, after he gave evidence on
Tuesday where he had outlined her mental
health, her parenting, their fertility struggles
and harrowing journey to have a family
and their decision to emigrate to New
Zealand for a better and safer life.
He is appearing via video link from
South Africa.
Graham Dickason agreed that his wife,
whom he married in May 2006, was a
“loving wife and a loving mother”.
He said early in the marriage Dickason’s
“primary focus” was to have children.
But when they started trying they had
no luck and turned to fertility specialists
for help.
During that time Dickason – also a doctor
– began to prescribe herself antidepressants.
In South Africa, it is legal and common
for doctors to self-prescribe medication
and she made no secret of what she was
taking within her marriage.
Dickason went through seven rounds of
IVF before she fell pregnant with a daughter,
who was to be named Sarah.
In January 2013, when she was just 18
weeks pregnant, Dickason suffered serious
health complications and had to give birth
to the baby.
The baby had a heartbeat but died soon
after.
The couple got to see and hold the little
girl briefly before she was taken away.
The death was categorised as a miscarriage
and Dickason was not able to take
her child home, which affected her significantly.
The court heard Dickason cried “every
single day for two months”.
The couple went through two more
rounds of unsuccessful IVF and then
decided to use a donor egg.
Dickason then became pregnant with
Liané.
Her husband told the court his wife
“never expressed any feeling that the girls
were anything other than hers” and in his
eyes she was the mother.
“It made no difference to us,” he said.
During the pregnancy with Liané,
Dickason was “a nervous wreck”.
After Liané was born Graham Dickason
said his wife was tired and they both took
time to adjust to their new family.
During that time Dickson sought
psychiatric help and was diagnosed
with “major depressive disorder and
postpartum depression” as well as
“underlying anxiety”.
NEWS 5
accused’s mental health history
Dickason was known to suffer
from depression and anxiety for
many years before that.
Graham Dickason said by the
time Liané was about 18 months
old, his wife was feeling and doing
much better.
When Dickason was pregnant
with the twins a scan showed
Karla had a cleft palate.
The diagnoses caused a lot
of stress for the mother-to-be
who, along with worrying about
the child’s general health, was
concerned about possible feeding
issues.
As a result, the couple hired a
night nanny to help them.
A day nanny was also eventually
hired to help ease the demands
of three young children on
Dickason – who was parenting
for much of the time on her own
due to the demands of Graham
Dickason’s job.
Graham Dickason agreed
with Toohey his wife was a “very
organised woman” and she
became stronger on that front as
a mother. She took “meticulous
care” of the girls’ needs and was
“very attentive” to everything
each child was doing.
The jury was shown a message
Graham Dickason sent his wife at
one stage in which he said:
“You are a wonderful mother,
you have beautiful children, you
MOTHER: Lauren Dickason with twins Maya and Karla.
give up so much for the kids. I see
it,” he wrote.
Toohey then quizzed Graham
Dickason about his comments to
police during his interview after
the alleged murders.
The interview was conducted
over about three hours around
2am the day after the girls died.
Graham Dickason told police
then that his wife was “not a
nurturing mother”.
Toohey asked him to clarify
what he meant by that.
“It was a very confusing moment
in my life and … I was
probably referring to the most
recent times before our emigration,
but not Lauren as a whole,”
he said.
He said his wife never hurt or
abused the kids, was always “very
concerned for their safety” and
he did not doubt she loved them.
“There is no question in my
mind at all (about that),” he said.
Toohey then showed the jury
photographs of the girls and their
mother.
The photographs, she said,
illustrated that Dickason had
genuine affection for her children
– and they for her.
She said Dickason was “always
trying to find fun things” to do
with her family and did a lot of
arts and crafts with the children.
Graham Dickason told police
in his interview the girls “preferred”
him and that upset his
wife.
He explained under cross-examination
he was referring to the
immediate lead-up to the alleged
murders when he said that.
Toohey read the jury a message
Graham Dickason sent his wife
one Mother’s Day – which he
agreed summed up how he and
the children felt about his wife.
“You are a very special mommy.
Best of the best. In a class of
your own. We love you to infinity
and beyond,” he said.
Toohey spoke about messages
Dickason sent and received about
Graham
and Lauren
Dickason
with their
daughters,
Maya, Karla
and Liané,
prior to the
alleged
murders.
her family.
Crown Prosecutor Andrew
McRae, in his opening, said there
were a tranche of messages in
which Dickason spoke about
killing, murdering or hurting her
children.
To one friend who asked
her what she was watching on
Netflix, she replied that she was
watching Bloodline and it was
“very good … otherwise, I’m
just trying not to murder the
twins”.
The defence yesterday quizzed
Graham Dickason on the
language used nature of her messaging.
He said his wife swore and had
a “satirical” sense of humour so
many of the things she wrote
were in that context.
Based on those messages he
was never concerned about his
children’s safety.
The trial is set down for three
weeks.
WHEN DEAN Graham got
the opportunity to buy a part of
history from his favourite movie
he couldn’t turn it down.
Graham, 57, bought two
Harley Davidson’s used in the
1969 cult classic film Easy Rider
off their owner near Auckland
for $740,000 about four years
ago. They now sit inside his 420
sq m man cave in Lincoln.
“He could have asked for
double and probably would have
paid because it is my favourite
movie,” Graham said.
Easy Rider, staring Peter Fonda
and Dennis Hopper, is about
two bikers who travel through
the United States southwest
and encounter the rise of the
hippie movement, drug use, and
communal living.
“I remember the first time dad
sat me down and watched it.”
His love for motorcycles
came from his dad, the late
Mainfreight co-founder Neil
Graham who died aged 71 in
2015.
“Dad was into motorbikes and
that was how mum met him in
town on a bike.”
At the time, Neil was riding
a bike from British motorcycle
manufacturer A. J. Stevens & Co.
“When dad had his AJS or
whatever out, I’d go on the back
with him and I just remember
the smell of him and his hair and
the smell and sound of the bike
and it just hooked me.”
The Easy Rider motorcycles
are one of the main features in
his man cave, which is home to
some of the 214 bikes and 29
other vehicles he owns. The man
cave is one many people could
only dream of owning. Graham
describes it as “madness”.
He has collected memorabilia,
military equipment and other
vehicles all his life and said “it’s
good to put it all under one roof”.
Since 2020, Graham and
his partner Liana Bush – the
daughter of well-known
Christchurch cyclist Ross Bush
who died in the February 22,
2011, earthquake when the
facade of a bookstore fell onto
his car while he was eating lunch
on Riccarton Rd – have been
curating the collection.
They make sure everything
has a place inside the newly-built
man cave, specifically designed
for Graham’s displays.
Bush said: “Initially (it)
HANG OUT: Dean Graham
and partner Liana Bush in
420 sq m man cave.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
started out as wanting an area
to put Dean’s motorbikes and
somewhere for him to have like
his own kind of space adjacent
to the family home. So it started
off as a small sort of project
and went on to be the 420 sq m
build.”
The man cave now dwarfs the
family home.
Said Graham: “It’s been fun.
It’s been long. It’s been two-anda-half,
nearly three years.”
The cave is almost finished
and, when it is, the plan is to
take groups through to see the
collection.
“I think it’s great, you know,
and when they come, all I say to
them is it’s simple if you want
to come and see it, there will be
a bucket at the door. Gold coin
donation, and then we’ll donate
it to charity.”
Graham has become known
for his philanthropy, which
included buying a full-size
cardboard Lamborghini in 2021
for $10,420 which was donated to
Starship Children’s Hospital.
COLLECTION: Dean Graham spent for $740,000 on two Harley Davidson’s from the film Easy Rider starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, while this
Mil 34C Hermit light helicopter, which once belonged to the Nigerian Air Force, now sits in his backyard.
– and the ultimate man cave
He sold the cardboard replica
for $2025 and donated the money
to Mike King’s mental health
charity, I Am Hope. Graham
often pays for people’s groceries
at the supermarket checkout line
when he sees the need.
“It’s not about them going oh
look, thank you to me. It’s just
making them think, hey, we’re
all on the planet, we’ve all got
different channels we’re going
down, but we’re all here and we
all care.”
Outside the man cave, a number
of incredible items can also
be found in his backyard.
He owns a flying 3/4 replica
P51 Mustang single-seat
fighter plane built in Loburn.
It’s mounted on
a steel post
and has been
painted
blue and
red to
look
like
actor Tom
Cruise’s
P51. Inside
the
cockpit,
there is a
mannequin
dressed
like Cruise’s
character
Pete Mitchell,
known as ‘Maverick’, from the
film Top Gun.
Also on his lawn is a Land
Rover on a stump and a Mil
34C Hermit light helicopter
once used by the Nigerian Air
Force. Graham also has a High
Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled
Vehicle, known as a Humvee,
which was used by the United
States Army during the
Iraq War.
ON SHOW: Motorcycles and film props, including a life-sized Deadpool
mannequin, adorn Dean Graham’s man cave, while a former US Army
Humvee and a replica Mustang fighter plane, similar to the one owned by
Tom Cruise, are on display in the backyard.
As you enter his man cave
there is a workshop for his bikes,
a helmet room, and a wall full of
old skateboards, many of which
were Graham’s when he was
growing up.
Moving through the cave, it
becomes much more homely –
with a bar, sunken lounge and a
Volkswagen Kombi van, which
has been converted into a DJ
booth.
On either side of the lounge
area, there are display cases
with more motorcycles, one
of which is a bike designed
by New Zealand freestyle motocross
rider Levi Sherwood.
It was made for a specific
trick – a double forward flip –
and was the first bike Sherwood
ever built.
Said Graham: “The fuel tank
is only big enough for a specific
run time.”
Going through the rest of
the cave there are a number of
cars, including a rare replica
1965 Shelby Daytona American
sports-coupé and a Holden A9X
Torana.
Along with the cars, he also
has many motorcycles mounted
on the wall, many of which he
has raced or used on the farm.
“I’m glad I kept them all
because they are important to
me.”
Graham said he can look at
them and remember his past.
“Some people have photo
albums I just keep the bikes
and know what each one
means.
“This cave is just
a whole lot of
photographs
of my life and
how much fun
I’ve had and
it’s only just
begun.”
Rare apartment up for grabs
• By Nikki Preston
AN APARTMENT in one of
the city’s few remaining heritage
buildings is for sale.
The 1913 heritage-protected
Old Government Building in
Cathedral Square survived the
February 22, 2011 earthquake
and had re-opened as the
Heritage Hotel in 2013, above
the popular boutique bar OGB
on the ground floor.
Ray White
listing agent Nic
Davis said the
property was sold
to a developer in
the 1990s, and
strengthening
Nic Davis
work carried out
during that renovation
meant it only suffered
minor damage in the quake.
“A lot of the heritage stuff that
was in town wasn’t strengthened,
so they got broken beyond
repair. But this one was strong
enough that it was able to be
repaired rather than having to
be rebuilt,” he said.
The one-bedroom apartment
is one of 52 apartments in the
building. Most are privatelyowned
by investors and owneroccupiers
and the most desirable
are north-facing units, like the
one Davis is selling.
It has a price indication of
$600,000 and, according to
OneRoof records, last changed
hands for $380,000 in 2016.
Davis said it would suit a young
professional couple wanting to
live in the city. Owners have access
to a gym, indoor 25-metre
lap pool, sauna and spa.
The apartment is currently
used as a city base for the owner
and is no longer required.
He said it was rare to be able
to buy a piece of Christchurch’s
history.
“It’s really nice for some people
because they know that you
simply can’t get that again.”
Due to it being a Category 1
historic place, the Italian high
renaissance-inspired exterior
cannot be altered, but the inside
can be completely renovated.
The insurance premiums are
also slightly higher.
The Ministry of Works and
Development was the last government
department to be based
in the building before relocating
in 1989. The city council
purchased it and then sold it
several years later to a developer
for Heritage Hotels with a
stipulation that its architectural
integrity be retained.
About 200 heritage buildings
were destroyed by the
earthquake, including several on
Cathedral Square.
Ex-army member invents teenage
daughter to ‘bait’ paedophile
• By Emily Moorhouse
AN EX-ARMY member looking
to satisfy his own shameful
desires “baited” and encouraged
a paedophile by pretending he
had a 14-year-old daughter
and offering the fake girl up for
sex.
But the judge who sentenced
him believes the man has now
“learned his lesson”.
Judge Paul Kellar imposed
a sentence of 10 months home
detention for Kalim Dennis, 36.
The district court heard
yesterday Dennis contacted a
man by text message, asking if
he was interested in having sex
with his non-existent 14-year-old
daughter.
The recipient said he was and
requested a picture.
Dennis sent an image to the
man, to which he replied she was
“hot” and he wanted to have sex
with her.
In the days after the November
2019 communication, the pair
discussed the agreement.
The man asked Dennis if the
girl knew about the arranged sex
and if she was a virgin.
When asked what Dennis
wanted in return, Dennis
stated “talking dirty about my
daughter”.
It was agreed that after talking
sexually about the fake daughter,
she and the man would have
sex.
The two exchanged 1072 text
messages discussing the meeting.
The communication between
them, and several others across
New Zealand, was intercepted
by police and an investigation
dubbed Operation Cobra was
launched.
On December 17, police
searched Dennis’ house and
found he had made web searches
titled “homemade bestiality” and
incest material.
Police found a total of 152
objectionable images, most
containing sexual activity
between adults and animals.
Child sexual exploitation
material was also found.
Dennis admitted to taking part
in the conversation with the man
but said he would “never follow
through” on any of the acts he
described in his messages.
Defence lawyer Kris Bucher
said while Dennis accepted his
messages were “disturbing to
read”, the offending related to
fantasy rather than reality.
Bucher said no actual children
were on offer as Dennis had
invented the teen girl. He had
also taken meaningful steps to
address his behaviour.
He asked the judge to impose
a sentence of home detention,
adding his client was “ashamed
and embarrassed”.
Bucher also asked the judge to
permanently suppress Dennis’
name as publication would result
in “extreme hardship” for his
family.
Crown prosecutor Sean
Mallett opposed the application,
stating Dennis did not meet the
threshold for extreme hardship.
Mallett said Dennis was
“baiting” somebody he knew to
be a paedophile.
Judge Paul Kellar agreed
and added Dennis was also
encouraging demand for such
exploitation.
He said while Dennis had
learned his lesson, there was
a “real need” to deter others
from these types of crimes and
declined his application for
suppression.
Judge Kellar gave Dennis
discounts for his previous good
character, having never been
before the court, his guilty pleas,
remorse, time spent on bail
and steps taken to address his
behaviour such as counselling.
On a charge of offering to deal
in a person under 18 for sexual
exploitation and a representative
charge of possessing
objectionable publications, the
judge imposed an end sentence
of 10 months home detention
with special conditions and six
months standard post-detention
conditions.
Dennis was not placed on the
child sex offender’s register and
the judge ordered forfeiture of
his electronic devices.
The New Zealand Defence
Force confirmed Dennis “was
in the army” but said he was no
longer a member.
“We have no further comment
to make.”
Canterbury University
A popular recreation spot and
Blind runner takes on Big Apple
• By Susan Sandys
A BLIND man with a passion
for running will compete in
November’s New York Marathon.
Blair McConnell, 58, was
born with retinitis pigmentosa.
The genetic eye disease causes
cells in the retina to break down
slowly over time, resulting in
progressive vision loss.
McConnell will travel to The
Big Apple for the world’s largest
marathon as one of seven athletes
with Achilles International New
Zealand.
Achilles aims to provide people
with disabilities the opportunity
to participate in mainstream
athletics, and matches them with
volunteer guides.
McConnell, from Prebbleton,
started running about four years
ago after being an “armchair
sportsperson” for most of his life.
“I found a very patient guide,
who came to my place week after
week and took me out running.
In the early days, it was run a bit,
walk a bit, run a bit, walk a lot,
until we finally got up to a 5km
run.”
Guides run alongside their
vision-impaired jogger, who they
lead with the help of a tether.
Within three months of taking
up his new sport, McConnell
entered the Round the Bays half
marathon in Wellington, and
completed it. He went on
to compete in several more
half marathons.
The New York Marathon is
on November 5. At 42km, it will
be McConnell’s first-ever full
marathon.
McConnell said his main
guide, Noel Whiteside, was
unable to make the trip, allowing
fellow guide, Anton McLean, to
step in.
“I’m looking forward to
achieving a full marathon and
seeing parts of New York that
you could only see if you were
running it. But more importantly,
the opportunity to let others
know that they can do what they
want to, they are only limited by
their self beliefs,” he said.
McConnell said while he could
not see the world around him
while running, he could see
images of that world as his guide
would describe things as they
ran. These images were vivid,
as he could remember what the
world looked like from before he
lost his sight.
“My eyes don’t work, but I still
see,” McConnell said.
McConnell said as a child he
“could see enough to fake it”, and
played rugby while at school.
It was not until his early 20s
he needed a white cane or guide
dog to get around. Today, he
still has some light perception,
in that he can tell daytime from
nighttime.
He is looking forward to being
in New York.
“Central Park will be unreal,
just because it is so iconic.
Passing the Madison Avenue
Bridge, passing the Empire State
Building, I’m sure somebody
is going to tell me when we do
that,” McConnell said.
McConnell is a dad of three
teenagers and works for MYOB
selling business software. He has
a guide dog named Oakley.
While Oakley accompanies
McConnell as he heads into
the office, the 10-year-old black
labrador stays home when his
master goes running.
“If I’m late for his dinner, he
stands at the door in anticipation,
waiting for me to get home.”
Late reverend gets his own asteroid
• By Susan Sandys
A LATE reverend’s dedication
to astronomy has forever been
remembered by an asteroid
named after him.
Reverend Ian Crumpton, who
died age 82 in December last
year, is a former president of
the Canterbury Astronomical
Society and helped establish
a New Zealand network of
cameras that help NASA map
meteor showers.
The asteroid numbered 32150
has been named Crumpton in
his honour.
Asteroids are sometimes called
minor planets. They are left over
from the formation of the solar
system 4.6 billion years ago. They
range in size from less than 1km
to more than 1000km.
Crumpton has a diameter
of about 10km. It is located in
the main asteroid belt, which
is between the orbits of Mars
and Jupiter, and contains a large
number of asteroids.
Wife Tricia Crumpton said her
husband would have been surprised
at the news of the asteroid
naming, formally announced by
the International Astronomical
Union.
“He just quietly got on with his
astronomy, it was quite a passion
for him. The thing I think that
was a bit sad is he wasn’t here to
appreciate it.”
HONOUR: Canterbury Astronomical Society former president Reverend Ian Crumpton has
had an asteroid named after him.
Ian had been a Presbyterian
minister, who served in Dunedin,
Gisborne and Christchurch.
While serving at a parish in
Spreydon he had built his own
observatory out of paper mache
on a wooden frame behind the
manse. Then at West Melton,
where they had moved about 30
years ago due to the area’s stunning
night skies, he built another
observatory in his backyard with
a slide-off roof.
What he liked about astronomy
was how amateurs could make
a difference to the worldwide
body of knowledge by what they
observed in the night skies.
“If you have that enthusiasm,
the sky is the limit,” Tricia said.
Ian was crucial in establishing
and operating the Cameras for
All-sky Meteor Surveillance
(CAMS) New Zealand for the
NASA Ames Research Centre.
Automated video surveillance
of the night sky is sent from
the cameras, which are at
areas including West Melton,
Ashburton and Tekapo, to the
research centre. The data is used
to derive the geometrical orbit
of each recorded meteor in the
SPACE PHOTO:
Asteroid Gaspra was
photographed by the
Galileo spacecraft on
a flyby through the
main asteroid belt in
1991. It is of similar size
to the recently-named
Crumpton, which has
not been photographed
close-up.
Solar System.
Canterbury University
astronomer Jack Baggaley explained
32150 was the number
of the asteroid that has now been
named Crumpton.
“Asteroids are numbered 1 to
about 50,000 roughly in order of
their discovery. The first named
Ceres was discovered in the year
1801.”
Time for a change
deficient in B12
Emerging research has shown that as
many as fifty percent of older adults and
as many as twenty-five percent of younger
adults are deficient in vitamin B12.
Scientists at Rush University medical centre
found those most deficient in vitamin B12
to have the smallest brain mass and the
lowest scores on tests measuring shortterm
memory, concentration and brain
performance. Another study showed
that older people with higher levels of
B12 in their blood have larger, healthier
brains and score higher on cognitive tests
than those with lower levels. Yet another
recent landmark study showed that B12
supplementation slows the accelerated
rate of brain shrinkage and declining
cognitive function. B12 is essential for
energy production, cell health, regulation
of mood and sleep cycles, nerve health and
repair, and prevention of homocysteine, a
serious cardiovascular risk factor known
to cause damage and plaque in the blood
vessels. It can also increase the chances of
a stroke. Harvard
researchers found a
thirty-four percent
decrease in risk
of vision loss in a
study of participants
aged forty-plus who
supplemented with B12.
Another study linked a higher risk of
hearing loss in subjects in their sixties who
were low in B12.
So many people lack B12 because our
body’s ability to absorb it declines with
age as the digestive system becomes less
efficient. Anti-reflux medication and other
drugs further reduce B12 absorption.
The good news is that vitamin B12 is
available in the highly absorbable, clinically
researched form of methyl-cobalamin
sublingual tablets. These dissolve and are
absorbed in the mouth, bypassing the
digestive tract to raise B12 levels in the
body efficiently.
Vitamin B 12 and further information
is available from the natural health
specialists at Marshall’s Health &
Supplementation of methylcobalamin B12
function. B12 is also known to protect against
homocysteine a serious cardiovascular risk
factor that can also damage the hearing,
intensification, mandates, co-governance,
health reforms, with more bills in the
works. Therefore I can’t see them getting
voted back in anytime soon.
I want to see new faces in Parliament
and in particular ex National MP Matt
King and his party DemocracyNZ, as
National is no longer representing my
views.
-D Downward, Bryndwr
Hopefully a National, Act coalition.
Our current Government has managed
to ruin our country. Education, health and
transport sectors are no longer first-world
standard. The covid policies have been
over the top.
The ship was sinking and the champagne
socialist Jacinda jumped overboard.
-Stef Backhouse
I’m afraid to say it but a National, Act
coalition is going to win this election.
Now don’t get me wrong, this is bad
news. But the choice is between a Labour
government, who will do nothing, at least
nothing substantial. Or a National and
Act government, who will slowly erode
the underlying goodness and hope of our
country, but hey at least it’s something.
The Greens are also there and they are
the only party with even an ounce of
empathy towards the struggling working
class, but as always they will get 11-13 per
SpecialiStS in
Helping our
community grow
cent of the vote and spend another three
years yelling into the void of whichever
political nightmare currently holds office
as the earth slowly warms and our brains
rot to dust.
-Josh Watson, Riccarton
When the cameras showed the victorious
Peters-proxied Labour Party partying
and cheering when it was announced, I
feared they weren’t fit for office and that’s
been the case.
At least the Nationals, Act will tidy
things up and hopefully give the vast majority
of Kiwis the things important to us.
-Mark McGoldrick
The majority of New Zealand’s selfsustaining
assets have been destroyed
under Labour and regrettably the
National, Act alliance has spoken little of
restoring or reversing the damage already
caused.
They talk of taxes but nothing of reinstating
for example Marsden Point, which
would remove dependence on expensive
overseas petrol and second grade bitumen.
They need the fresh eyes of a previous
National Party member working together
to take New Zealand out of the Labour
nose-dive by restoring confidence in our
once great country.
Due to his political cognisance, Matt
King of DemocracyNZ is able, and with
DNZ’s policies to not only protect our
assets but preserve the Bill of Rights and
unity of New Zealand, both of which are
questionable at the moment, our country
will potentially be united and profitable
again.
National, Act can’t run on their own, nor
rely on NZ First. They need DemocracyNZ
to get them over the line.
at the helm
Community input critical
in shaping region’s future
I hold a sincere desire for the success
of small parties. I believe these parties
have the potential to reshape our political
landscape and guide our nation towards a
better tomorrow.
While major parties have long
dominated the political scene, it is the
small parties that truly capture my hopes
and align with the aspirations of the
people. They bring fresh perspectives,
unburdened by the establishment,
and offer innovative solutions to our
challenges.
Under the current coalition, we have
witnessed the damaging impact of divisive
race-based policies and mounting national
debt. Meanwhile, the large opposition
block lacks comprehensive plans to unite
our nation and revive our economy,
leaving much to be desired.
In contrast, small parties such as NZ
First, DemocracyNZ, and Freedoms
NZ embody the change we seek. They
prioritise unity, fair taxes, and an inclusive
society that fosters the well-being of all
citizens.
By supporting these small parties, we
send a strong message that we yearn for
genuine transformation. We seek leaders
who truly listen to our concerns and strive
to create a harmonious society where
everyone has an equal chance to succeed.
Though small parties may face
challenges due to limited resources,
history has shown that committed
individuals can spark significant change,
even from a minority position.
I eagerly anticipate a future where small
parties prevail and shape our nation’s
destiny. Let us rally behind these parties,
empowering them to lead us towards a
brighter and more inclusive future for all.
-Michael Wilson, Papanui
Who to vote for is the question.
From my point of view, all parties in
Government failed their duty to listen
to the people when the people came to
Parliament and they all agreed to not hear
their concerns.
Democracy is built on the relationship
of Government listening to and
representing the people, not ruling
over the people. There has been a move
to centralise more and more of our
institutions, removing them further from
the people and any accountability. I,
for one, will be looking to the smaller
parties in hope of change, and I hope
to see the current political system
upended.
-Andrea Newman, Mairehau
If Labour stays New Zealand is going
to be stuffed even more. National and
Act hopefully will get in. Labour has
overspent. We work our asses off and
have got nothing from Labour. The health
system and education is going backwards.
I know National won’t solve everything
but time for change.
-Darryl Clarke
Cemetery damage
Look forward to seeing an apology from
Maddie Brett and residents who decided
to name and shame a person they had
decided was guilty for riding a quad in the
cemetery. Also The Star who went to his
house. Perhaps you could leave the police
to do their job.
Environment
Canterbury Chair
Peter Scott
DO YOU FIND yourself thinking about
what we could, or should do to improve
the environment and protect it for future
generations? Me too.
Unfortunately, the environment isn’t
in the condition it should be. This is due
to decisions of the past, which were well
intentioned but lacked the science and
technology that we have now, which we
can’t ignore.
Now’s not the time to point fingers,
instead we need to work together – and
fast – to turn the tide of environmental
degradation in some parts of our region to
protect our water, land and air, and to
improve biodiversity.
Canterbury Regional Council (Environment
Canterbury) is responsible for
enforcing the rules that dictate how Cantabrians
use and enjoy the environment.
Over the next 18 months we will be
working to write and update a number of
long-term and strategic plans to reflect
the directions set by Government, meet
the expectations of mana whenua and
the wider community, and to respond to
climate change.
The changes we make to these plans will
have an impact and will give us a better
chance at safeguarding the environment
for the future. We’ve got a lot of ground
to cover – and we can only do it well with
your help.
We need the community to help us write
the changes that are needed, to ensure the
way forward represents all Cantabrians.
We have developed a survey which I
encourage you to seek out and complete.
We’re asking you to share your experiences
and opinions on some of the different
environmental challenges we face in
Canterbury/Waitaha. What is important
to you, and what are your aspirations for
the region’s future?
The survey isn’t a once-only opportunity;
later this year, we will reflect back
on what we have heard and test some
potential solutions with the wider community,
and anyone who has taken part in
this initial survey.
Everyone has the right to enjoy the
environment, and in turn, everyone has a responsibility
to protect it. I hope you will take
time to help us develop some solutions.
• To complete the survey visit
New city council campaign ahead of
Long Term Plan asks: What Matters Most?
WHAT MATTERS Most? Our
next Long Term Plan, that’s
what!
Finding out what matters most
to Christchurch residents about
their city is the focus of a new
campaign from the city council.
The What Matters Most?
campaign will be running until
August 13, and city council
staff will be out and about in
the community, popping up
at markets and events, public
meetings and forums.
With challenging issues
and decisions on the horizon,
they’ll be finding out what the
community’s real priorities are
ahead of the city council’s Long
Term Plan 2024–2034.
“It’s the council’s responsibility
to deliver the core services that
keep Christchurch and Banks
Peninsula ticking,” says city
council chief executive Dawn
Baxendale.
“Everyone in the city has
different priorities, and this
exercise will help us see where
each of our core services rank
in the discussion, as we prepare
to allocate our resources for the
next 10 years.”
Keep an eye open online for
new digital tools that let you
share your views in a way that’s
interactive, accessible and easy
to use. For those who like a more
hands-on approach, look in your
local library or service centre for
rotating voting boxes that let you
show your support for different
priorities by placing a vote with
a token.
What Matters Most? is
taking a ‘back to basics’ handson
approach to gathering
people’s voices, combined with
innovative digital tools.
“We want to hear from as wide
a range of viewpoints as possible.
The information and feedback
people provide is so important
for us both as an organisation
and a community because it
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
will be used to inform the draft
Long Term Plan,” Baxendale
says.
The Long Term Plan sets out
what the city council will build,
maintain and service as a city
over the next 10 years, and how
we will pay for it.
“Our staff will be out and
about in the community. We
have an increasingly diverse
community here in Christchurch
– it’s becoming the city of choice
for many, so we’re looking to
engage in innovative new ways
to tap into that range of voices,”
Baxendale says.
LOOKING FORWARD: Finding out what matters most to
Christchurch residents about their city is the focus of a new
campaign from the city council.
How can you provide feedback?
• Keep an eye out at your
local market, events, library
or service centre – our interactive
voting boxes will
and pop them into the
boxes that match up with
your priorities.
• For those who prefer pen
Coastal Spirit will
look to continue their
momentum into the
Southern League after
a surprise win over
Cashmere Technical,
while netball, rugby
reports
FOOTBALL
For the first time in two years,
Coastal Spirit have secured
the Hurley Challenge Shield
with a 3-2 win over Cashmere
Technical.
A flurry of goals from Apisai
Rabuka, Omar Cameron and
Aashish Rai within the first 26
minutes propelled Coastal to
a 3-0 lead over the perennial
Southern League contenders
at Garrick Memorial Park on
Friday.
Although Technical fought
back with two goals, Coastal
head coach Robbie Stanton said
his team worked “extremely
hard” to close out the game.
“The club doesn’t have any
other silverware, apart from the
Hurley shield, at the moment,”
he said.
“So there were a few celebrations
on Friday as you’d expect.”
The shield is only on the
line in home games against
Canterbury teams, meaning
Coastal won’t have to defend it
when they play Green Island on
Sunday.
However, with their last two
games resulting in wins, Stanton
is hoping Coastal can continue
their momentum.
“This year we’ve been a little
inconsistent, but had half a
dozen new players.
“We always knew that we
would hit the straps in the second
half of the season.”
avoided relegation with their 2-0
win over FC Twenty 11 at the
weekend.
Defining loss spurs New Brighton on
• By Jaime Cunningham
A HEARTBREAKING loss a
month ago has been key to a
rejuvenated New Brighton side
powering their way to Metro
Premier title contention.
New Brighton have won their
last three matches after the 12-10
loss to Sumner in their secondto-last
round-robin match.
Head coach Scott Pawson said
the loss was a critical moment for
the team this season.
“The Sumner game was probably
a turning point for us. The
guys were really disappointed to
let that one slip,” he said.
New Brighton face High
School Old Boys in the preliminary
final at Bob Deans on
Saturday, after a last-minute Ben
Johnston penalty goal saw the
team overcome Lincoln University
27-26 in last weekend’s semi
final.
Beating Lincoln University was
bittersweet for Pawson, as his
older brother Jason is a co-coach
of the Rams.
“It was tough for me to see the
hurt in him after the game, but it
was good for me to get the win.”
“The result could’ve gone
either way,” he said.
“It was a great game of club
rugby – we were very lucky to get
down the other end of the field
and get a penalty right in front of
the posts.”
KEY: New Brighton fullback Ben Johnston slotted a last-minute penalty to take his team
into the Metro Premier preliminary finals. He is pictured in New Brighton’s loss to Sumner
on June 24.
Although Pawson admits he
would rather have his team winning
by larger scores, he’s confident
New Brighton can come out
of tight games on top after the
last two weeks.
“The guys are older and more
experienced now and seem to
know how to close games off,”
he said.
New Brighton have had the
experience of former All Black
Ryan Crotty in their last four
games, who Pawson said is
enjoying being back in the club
rugby environment.
“Having Ryan in our group,
and at this time of year, has been
golden.”
“From what I’ve seen in the last
few weeks is that he’s been really
enjoying coming back to grassroots
rugby,” Pawson said.
HSOB will be favourites to
take the title, having won their
last six games and coming into
form since losing to University
37-35 on May 20.
“Old Boys’ are playing well
at the moment but we’re just
focused on us,” Pawson said.
“They are going to be tough.
Last time we played them, we
gave them the lead and had to
play catch up for the rest of the
game.”
“There’s been some very tight
games in the competition and we
expect to see the same again this
week.”
Christian School
Dreams into Reality
Te Aratai College
Aidanfield Christian School is focused
on an excellent standard of learning for
all our pupils within a context of strong
biblical values, family involvement and
an emphasis on knowing all our pupils
well.
‘Grow in Wisdom and Stature, Stand
and Be Confident’ is our motto. We want
our pupils to stand and be confident in
the communities they will take their
place in and believe that education is
a lot more than just learning facts and
figures, or training for employment. The
truths of God’s word address all areas of
life and impact on our response to each
child, be it; spiritual, academic, physical,
social or emotional.
We believe that our school offers
pupils the significant benefits of a local
school with a strong community and
family environment.
You may have heard about us, come
see for yourself, call or email to meet the
Principal.
From Linwood High School 1954
to Te Aratai College 2023, our school
continues its proud history. We are
now in the second year of our return to
Aldwins Road and our completely rebuilt
and stunning new school. Our roll is
expanding, significantly so, as Te Aratai
College continues inspiring us all from
our 650-seat theatre-standard auditorium
through to student-friendly courtyards.
Our design is for personalised student
success and reflects the new name gifted
to us by Ngāi Tūāhuriri, Te Aratai College,
Pathway to the Sea.
Our learning and classroom design is
based on responsiveness to the needs of
the students at that moment. We have
classrooms of standard, time-honoured
style with the added flexibility to open
up when desired. This is because there
are occasions when learning can be more
open but equally there are times when, for
some students, this is a learning disaster.
Te Aratai College also has smaller rooms
for students who learn best in reduced,
very quiet environments, and bigger
spaces for learning flexibility and larger
student gatherings. The building design
assists staff and students to respond
to the many factors that personalise
success. Of course, new buildings alone
do not necessarily improve education.
The relationship with the teacher - he
tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata - and the
personalisation of learning is the key for
this.
However, there is also no doubt that
new, purpose-built buildings and spaces
that arise from these community values
of relationships and personalisation are
contributing hugely to student success.
This is Te Aratai College.
Student and Community Feedback:
Year 9: “I like being at Mairehau High School because it is a nice, safe, happy
and friendly environment for me. I like how I have already been welcomed into
Mairehau and how all the teachers make me feel like I have been here for ages. My
favourite subjects so far are Drama and Māori. I also really enjoy Science and doing
experiments.”
Year 8 parent:“My son and I came to Mairehau’s Open Day and were impressed by
the passion and friendliness of the teachers and staff. I was relieved to see single cell
classrooms. Our guide, every teacher and the principal called my son by name, and I
just thought that was gold.”
• Size of land – Lifestyle properties
offer space for children, pets, hobbies,
an expansive garden and perhaps a
home-run business but they require
work so are not for everyone and
a compact section might be more
sensible if a tight budget or busy
lifestyle.
• Bathrooms – Second bathrooms are
great in homes with teenagers and a
wet shower room is ideal for young
children. A bath might be fashionable
though is often not used and its
absence could mean a more spacious
bathroom.
• Laundry – Would a laundry in the
garage do the job?
• Storage – How much storage do you
need? Weigh up what can truly be
stored in the garage once vehicles are
in, a preference in winter. Garages
vary in size so check the size to ensure
your vehicles will fit. Look also at
where else the house offers storage
capacity such as in hall cupboards,
a large hot water cylinder cupboard,
wardrobes, walk-in robe, attic storage
trusses, as well as the potential for
hooks and shelving in the garage for
bikes, tools, garden equipment and
even kayaks.
To be happy with your choice, list the
features that you need, considering:
• Family space – Is there room for
the children to play indoors and for
television and entertainment units?
Should this be open plan or separated?
• Kitchen – What needs to be in your
kitchen? Is it a whim or something
that offers a practical solution to the
way you use your kitchen?
• Bedroom sizes – What are optimum
sizes? Smaller bedrooms may translate
to slightly lower building costs while
extra space can be useful.
Home • Garaging & Property – A standard appears double every garage Thursday, vehicles delivered can be parked FREE on the
$40k to fix
council
by meth
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
DISTRICT council-owned
houses in Darfield have had
to be decontaminated from
methampetamine before they can
The three dwe lings are part of a
portfolio of houses and a section in
Ritso S the council is dispersing.
It has cost just over $40,000 to
decontaminate the properties.
Insurance has met about $30,000
of the bi l, the district council the
The houses are on the market
for between $300,000 to $355,000.
Former mayor Bi l Woods says
he is concerned that money from
the sales wi l not go back into
Malvern community.
In the early 2000s Mr Woods
and late district counci lor Paul
Stewart was involved in pu ting a
case forward that if the properties
were sold the money had to go
back into the community.
“In fairness, the money gained
from the sale of these properties
must be returned to the area from
where it was co lected,” he said.
The district council’s property
and commercial manager Douglas
Marsha l said yesterday the
sale proceeds wi l be credited to
