The Star Thursday July 20 2023 FOCUS ON HEALTH 1 in 2 people 16 LETTERS Time for a change deficient in B12 Emerging research has shown that as many as fifty percent of older adults and as many as twenty-five percent of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12. Scientists at Rush University medical centre found those most deficient in vitamin B12 to have the smallest brain mass and the lowest scores on tests measuring shortterm memory, concentration and brain performance. Another study showed that older people with higher levels of B12 in their blood have larger, healthier brains and score higher on cognitive tests than those with lower levels. Yet another recent landmark study showed that B12 supplementation slows the accelerated rate of brain shrinkage and declining cognitive function. At least the Nationals, Act will tidy things up and hopefully give the vast majority of Kiwis the things important to us. -Mark McGoldrick The majority of New Zealand’s selfsustaining assets have been destroyed under Labour and regrettably the National, Act alliance has spoken little of restoring or reversing the damage already caused. They talk of taxes but nothing of reinstating for example Marsden Point, which would remove dependence on expensive overseas petrol and second grade bitumen. They need the fresh eyes of a previous National Party member working together to take New Zealand out of the Labour nose-dive by restoring confidence in our once great country. Due to his political cognisance, Matt King of DemocracyNZ is able, and with DNZ’s policies to not only protect our assets but preserve the Bill of Rights and unity of New Zealand, both of which are questionable at the moment, our country will potentially be united and profitable again. National, Act can’t run on their own, nor rely on NZ First. I believe these parties have the potential to reshape our political landscape and guide our nation towards a better tomorrow. While major parties have long dominated the political scene, it is the small parties that truly capture my hopes and align with the aspirations of the people. They bring fresh perspectives, unburdened by the establishment, and offer innovative solutions to our challenges. Under the current coalition, we have witnessed the damaging impact of divisive race-based policies and mounting national debt. Meanwhile, the large opposition block lacks comprehensive plans to unite our nation and revive our economy, leaving much to be desired. In contrast, small parties such as NZ First, DemocracyNZ, and Freedoms NZ embody the change we seek. They prioritise unity, fair taxes, and an inclusive society that fosters the well-being of all citizens. By supporting these small parties, we send a strong message that we yearn for genuine transformation. We seek leaders who truly listen to our concerns and strive to create a harmonious society where everyone has an equal chance to succeed. Though small parties may face challenges due to limited resources, history has shown that committed individuals can spark significant change, even from a minority position. From my point of view, all parties in Government failed their duty to listen to the people when the people came to Parliament and they all agreed to not hear their concerns. Democracy is built on the relationship of Government listening to and representing the people, not ruling over the people. There has been a move to centralise more and more of our institutions, removing them further from the people and any accountability. This is due to decisions of the past, which were well intentioned but lacked the science and technology that we have now, which we can’t ignore. Now’s not the time to point fingers, instead we need to work together – and fast – to turn the tide of environmental degradation in some parts of our region to protect our water, land and air, and to improve biodiversity. Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) is responsible for enforcing the rules that dictate how Cantabrians use and enjoy the environment. Over the next 18 months we will be working to write and update a number of long-term and strategic plans to reflect the directions set by Government, meet the expectations of mana whenua and the wider community, and to respond to climate change. The changes we make to these plans will have an impact and will give us a better chance at safeguarding the environment for the future. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover – and we can only do it well with your help. We need the community to help us write the changes that are needed, to ensure the way forward represents all Cantabrians. We have developed a survey which I encourage you to seek out and complete. We’re asking you to share your experiences and opinions on some of the different environmental challenges we face in Canterbury/Waitaha. What is important to you, and what are your aspirations for the region’s future?
