Netball, hockey, league return,
as Coastal claim Hurley shield
Coastal Spirit will
look to continue their
momentum into the
Southern League after
a surprise win over
Cashmere Technical,
while netball, rugby
league and hockey all
return following Matariki.
Jaime Cunningham
reports
FOOTBALL
For the first time in two years,
Coastal Spirit have secured
the Hurley Challenge Shield
with a 3-2 win over Cashmere
Technical.
A flurry of goals from Apisai
Rabuka, Omar Cameron and
Aashish Rai within the first 26
minutes propelled Coastal to
a 3-0 lead over the perennial
Southern League contenders
at Garrick Memorial Park on
Friday.
Although Technical fought
back with two goals, Coastal
head coach Robbie Stanton said
his team worked “extremely
hard” to close out the game.
“The club doesn’t have any
other silverware, apart from the
Hurley shield, at the moment,”
he said.
“So there were a few celebrations
on Friday as you’d expect.”
The shield is only on the
line in home games against
Canterbury teams, meaning
Coastal won’t have to defend it
when they play Green Island on
Sunday.
However, with their last two
games resulting in wins, Stanton
is hoping Coastal can continue
their momentum.
“This year we’ve been a little
inconsistent, but had half a
dozen new players.
“We always knew that we
would hit the straps in the second
half of the season.”
Technical take on Nomads on
Saturday. Nomads seem to have
avoided relegation with their 2-0
win over FC Twenty 11 at the
weekend.
Selwyn United will likely decide
which team stays in next season’s
league. Selwyn will be looking
to bounce back from a hefty 6-0
loss to unbeaten table leaders
Christchurch United.
United travel to play the Dunedin
City Royals on Saturday,
while Ferrymead Bays take on
Nelson Suburbs at Saxton Fields
on Sunday.
NETBALL
UC A put a stop to Technical
A’s perfect championship round
start on Tuesday, producing a
comfortable 53-42 win over the
early pace-setters.
Technical were without midcourter
Charlotte Elley, while
UC saw the likes of Paris Lokotui
and Parris Petera return.
UC can further climb the
standings with a large win over
the struggling Hearts St Peters A
on Tuesday.
Saints suffered a 64-22 thrashing
at the hands of Lincoln
University A who shot up to
second place.
Kereru A and Lincoln University
A face each other in a
blockbuster clash on Tuesday,
with both teams in hot form and
the winner set to rise to the top
of the table. Kereru A go into the
game following a convincing 54-
40 win over Kereru B. Despite a
15-9 second quarter from the B
side, Kereru A proved too strong
for their counterparts.
Kereru B still have an outside
chance to make the playoffs, but
need a win over Lincoln University
B to stay in contention.
Fifth-placed Lincoln University
B beat the winless Kia Toa A
53-47.
Kia Toa face Technical A next
week, as they continue to search
for their first win of the round.
HOCKEY
After a period of Carlton
Redcliffs dominance, HSOB/
Burnside’s men face their first
Challenge Shield defence of
the season against Southern
on Saturday. HSOB/Burnside
overcame Carlton 3-2 on July
8 to secure the shield and will
be expected to retain it against
seventh-placed Southern.
But Southern will have added
club day support at Nunweek
Park before their female counterparts
search for their first win
of the season against HSOB/
Burnside.
Table leaders Marist take on
Hornby after they all but sealed
a playoff spot in their 5-0 win
over Harewood in round 12.
Harewood look to edge closer
to Marist and second-placed
Carlton with a win over Avon on
Saturday. Carlton have a bye.
Following their Challenge
Shield loss, Carlton’s men’s side
take on University. Marist and
Hornby face off at Marist Park
before the club’s women’s teams.
RUGBY LEAGUE
The in-form Halswell Hornets
have a chance to climb into major
semi-final contention at the
expense of the Linwood Keas.
The Hornets will be confident
heading into their clash against
the Eastern Eagles on Saturday
after thumping the Northern
Bulldogs 56-0 two weeks ago.
Halswell have already cemented
a playoff spot, with large wins
over the Keas and Bulldogs.
After losing the Massetti Cup
to the Hornby Panthers, the
Keas must record their first win
since June 24 to avoid a minor
semi-final against the Eagles.
The Keas went down to the
Panthers 16-8 before Matariki
and will look to bounce back
in the final round robin match
against the Riccarton Knights.
The Knights came close to
beating the Keas last month but
lost 22-16. The Panthers will be
expected to finish the regular
season on a high against the
Bulldogs.
