Downpours, snow, slips, ice cause problems
By SHELLEY TOPP AND
ROBYN BRISTOW
When Woodend Beach harness racing
trainer Bob Buttheaded out to begin
working his teamofhorses last Sunday
morning he found much of the training
property was underwater.
Bob and four other harnessracing
trainers,includingJohn and Jenna
Dunn, GavinSmith and Matt Purvis, all
train at the property which is owned by
Bob’s parentsDavidand Catherine Butt
who are on holiday in Fiji.
The day before the flooding, on
Saturday, the farm had been ‘‘winter
wet’’ after heavy rainsince Thursday but
once the creek that runs through it burst
the property had beeninundated with
water.
However, the allweather training
track on the propertyremainedfine to
use and no horses had to be evacuated.
‘‘We just moved them to higherground
or into boxes,’’ Bob said.
Tuahiwi trainerDave Thompson
wasn’tsolucky.
He had to evacuate 11 horses from his
training propertyonSunday night. The
horseswere moved to Rangiora
racecourse withhelp from John and
Jenna Dunn, Matt Purvis and Ohoka
trainer Trent Yesberg.
‘‘JohnDunn organised it,’’ Dave said.
It was like 2015 all over again for Dave
and his wifeSylvia when their horses
also had to be evacuatedbecause of
flooding and John came to theirrescue
then as well.
Dave and Sylviawere notified by Civil
Defence personnelat7.30pm on Sunday
that they would have to evacuate.
However, in the end they were able to
stay in their home but were very grateful
for the helpthey received moving their
horses.
‘‘John and his lovelywife Jenna are
such busypeople, but they still find time
to help others,’’ Sylviasaid.
Dave and Sylvia’s Revells Road
property backs on to the flood prone 85ha
blockofland betweenLineside Road and
Revells Road whichwas purchased by
the WaimakaririDistrict Councilearlier
this year to develop into awetland
reserve.
The couple are hopingthat the
development willimprovedrainage in
the surrounding area.
After the 2015 flooding there had been
many public meetings with the council to
get the drainage problems in the area
fixed, they said.
‘‘But it has just been an ongoing issue,
and nothing has happened.’’
Meanwhile flooding and snowcaused
problems on roads throughout North
Canterbury.
Motorists are being asked to keep an
eye out for flooded areas, potholes and
slips as councils beginthe clean up.
While Mt Lyford Skifieldcelebrated
the arrivalofsnow,and apossible
openingmid week, snow madedriving in
the area abit tricky.
The Inland Roadwas closed due to ice,
slips and flooding, but is now open, while
the Leader Road remains closed, along
with severalotherroads and fords
throughoutthe Hurunui District.
The rain caused the closure of Oxford
Area SchoolonMonday, withproblems
caused by flooded roadsalong school bus
routes.
Many roads and fords wereclosed in
the WaimakaririDistrict, but rivers, and
creeks are receding,allowing many
roads to reopen. Fordsremain closed,
particularly in the Eyre River.
WaikukuBeach Road, east of King’s
Avenue, was closed on Monday due to a
‘‘significant flow of wateracross the road
making it unsafe’’.
The council called in contractors with
pumps to help drain the water which
tookseveral hours. It said while it was
appreciated it would have asignificant
impact on residents and access, the
priority was to keep people safe.
Game changer ... Tina and Nigel George with the Gen 2KLIMA cane pruner.
Pruning easier with cane cutter
By JOHN COSGROVE
Many say it’s agame changerinthe
world of viticulture.
Acane pruning machine, invented by
Nigel Georgeand Marcus Wickham, two
North Canterburybased, leadingNew
Zealand viticulturists,the 2008 KLIMA,
is not only helping tackle pruning
locally and in otherNew Zealand
districts, it is now sought after
internationally.
‘‘We were both working for NZ
Vineyard Estate in Waipara at the
time,’’ says Nigel.
They could see cane pruningwas a
physical and daunting task, and while
women made great cane cutters, it took
alot of strength and efforttopull all the
debrisoff the vines.
‘‘It is one of the biggestjobs annually
for any vineyard, along withstripping
last year's growthoff the vines,’’says
Nigel.
Nigel and Marcus had been
discussinghow to automate the cane
pruning process, to make the job easier.
It’s now known that Nigelstood there
looking at the vinesfor about five
minutes and thensimply said ‘‘yes it’s
possible’’.
Three years later, after alot of
testing, the firstgeneration model of
The Widest
Music Variety
Tune in nowtolisten on
104.9 for North Canterbury
103.7 for Hanmer Springs
andKaikoura
the KLIMA was developed.
An efficient vineyard pruning system,
it consists of arevolutionary cutting
and sorting machinewhich mounts to a
tractor, coupled withapowerpack.
It was warmly received by vineyards
in Marlborough and then the duo took it
overseas.
Marcus and Nigel travelled to Europe
to sell it to French and German
vineyards.While there Nigel realised
he had to make some major changes.
‘‘The vineyards in Europeare alot
smallerand furtherapart than what we
workwith here, so the first generation
KLIMA was abit too large for them.’’
Nigel dived straight into the
development of the Gen 2model making
it smaller, lighter,more compact and
moreefficient.
The new Gen 2KLIMA makes the
cumbersome job of cane pruning alot
moreefficient and less strenuous for
vineyard workers.
Normally vineyards would employ up
to 60 cane cuttersinaseason.
‘‘It’s athreemonth job in winter on
bigger vineyards,’’ says Nigel,‘‘It’s very
labour intensive work and all
dependant on seasonal labourers.’’
But in recent years, due to changes in
the workforce and Covid, these workers
are in short supply.
The KLIMA reduces the dependency
on largenumbers of seasonal workers
needed.
‘‘We stillneed about 20 cane pruners
who walk between the vines, expertly
cutting the canes in preparation for
when the KLIMAcomes along to lift the
wires, strip the cut vines off the wires,
removelast seasonsgrowth and mulch
the debris, beforereturning the wires to
their original position.”
It takes alot less time, speeds up the
process and is safer for everyone while
savingmoneyfor vineyards.
While Marlborough, Europe and later
the USA,embracedthe KLIMA,
vineyards in Waipara were abit slower
in adopting the automated cane pruner.
Sea erosion debated
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Rapid erosion on the Amberley
foreshore is putting the brakes on
golfers getting to their course.
The road, which is just north of the
Amberley Beach settlement, is
experiencing significant erosion and
inundation due to the sea crashing over
the beach ridge.
On Tuesday at its monthly meeting the
Hurunui District Council decided to
investigate options to realign the road.
One option, to give access to the golf
course, Waimaiaia Reserve and the
Waipara River boundary, is via Webbs
Road and Hursley Terrace, following the
river boundary through private land.
It could then go on to the golf course, to
rejoin the existing Golf Links Road.
The other option is to extend the road
from Grierson Avenue, through private
land, across awetland, to the southern
boundary of the Golf Club.
Since last November public meetings
have provided opportunities for
community input into road alignment
options.
At the moment the road is regraded as
soon as practicable after weather events,
however this is not asustainable longterm
approach, the council says.
It has agreed to investigate the
estimated cost of both proposed road
realignments, including consenting and
construction, and the cost to acquire
land.
Officers are to report back to the
August 29 council meeting.
Amberley Golf Course has been at Golf
Links Road since 1954.
It was founded in 1922 when it was
opposite Amberley House on SH1,
before it was moved to the Amberley
Domain, then Lawcocks Road.
‘‘The golf course is an important part
of our community, we have got to do
whatever we can to take them with us on
this journey,’’ Cr Garry Jackson said.
Further north, Claverley Road has
also been suffering the effect of coastal
erosion.
This road is the only public access to
three farms, and KiwiRail’s coastal line
runs parallel to the road, right beside
the coast.
An approximate 50 metre section of
the road was eroded by king tides in late
June and early July 2023.
Since 2018, sea erosion has been
documented on several occasions,
causing road damage, rock movement,
and bank erosion.
Intervention steps have been taken in
the past to protect the road, but it is now
at apoint where alongterm solution is
needed.
Meetings involving Council staff, a
Contractor and KiwiRail Engineers, a
local Councillor and affected
landowners have taken place on site this
year to discuss the situation and
possible solutions.
Chief Operations Officer, Dan Harris,
says KiwiRail will now work out the
design to protect the rail. From there,
options for anew road can be looked at.
‘‘We are working with KiwiRail the
best we can. We will have no clear
direction before they have made their
assessment.’’
Nearby archaeological sites will also
be taken into consideration.
Mayor Marie Black said collaboration
is key.
“I believe together we can work
through this. That is how we will gain the
best outcome.”
Thetimecommitment for this study will be about10hours and you will
attend sixclinic visits in total. Youwill receive up to $220 in supermarket
The Your Legal BGM team ... Anthony Corcoran (left), Roger Brown, Helen Williams and Sharon Ward.
Three friends reunite in law firm
By JOHN COSGROVE
The recentclosing of lawyersBrandts
GiesenMcCormick didn’t create the
anticipated reduction in legal services
available in Rangiora.
Instead, it allowed three old friends to
reunite and continuetoprovide the same
high level of legalservices available to
the NorthCanterbury community.
In 1994 Roger Brown,SharonWard
and AnthonyCorcoranall graduated
from law school in Christchurch.
Ayear later they were all admitted to
the bar in Christchurchand thenall
three went their separate ways to
practice law.
Now the three friends havereunited
and opened Your LegalBGM in
Rangiora, to take over and continue the
legal services thathave been provided
for the past 30 plus years by Brandts
Giesen McCormick (BGM) to the North
Canterbury community.
Roger and Sharonhave both worked
for BGM since 2015, while Anthony has
been consolidating his legal practice in
Christchurch.
Along with Legal Executive Helen
Williams, theywill continue to provide
generalpracticelegal services to clients
in North Canterbury.
If Anthony’s namesounds familiar it’s
becauseheisthe son of the late Robin
Corcoranwho, alongwith his father Ed,
were prominentNorth Canterbury legal
practitioners whose old firmCorcoran
French still bears the family name.
Helen started legalpracticeworking
for Robin Corcoran in 1978 in what was
then known as EJCorcoran Son
Thwaites and Brown.
‘‘All the deedsand documents held
previously by BGM will be handled now
by Your Legal BGM which is in the same
building as before.
‘‘It’sgreat to be hereinRangiora. My
familyhas had along relationshipwith
North Canterbury and I’m happy to be
here withall my friends,’’ Anthony says.
Roger Brown sayseven though the
practice's name is slightly shorter now,
they willstill handle all the general legal
practice work from the samerooms in the
same building at 78B EastBelt in
Rangiora.
‘‘Sharon and Iworked for BGM and we
are now happy to be reuniting with
Anthony and Helen to keep working for
the same clients we had before.’’
Mud, glorious mud
Peppa Pig losing her golden boots, and
finding them in timetocompete in a
muddypuddle jump with her friends,
has got nothing on the real deal.
Although the sequence in this case
for my farmer husband happened in
reverse order, and there certainly
wasn’t any excitement aboutmuddy
puddles, or just mud in general really.
In fact Iamguessingwhat was
uttered whenhefound himself stuck
firmly, knee deep in mud in his
gumboots, would not have been fit for
achildren’s book, or any book for that
matter.
It began with adaringmove to
unhook abungeecord fromagate way.
The vehicle being usedhad already
had to be rescued byaneighbour
when it got stuck, so using it was right
out of the question to get to said
bungee.
Simple justtippytoe down the fence
line where the cows hadn’t turned the
ground to mud, then somehow get
across the gateway whichwas abit of
abog hole,tounhook thebungee.
Midway the gumboots became firmly
planted.
After alot of wiggling, pulling and
nearly ending up facefirst in the mud,
there wasnothing else for it but to
abandon the gummies.
Carefully taking one foot out of one
gumboot at atime, stripping his jeans
and socks off, he then plunged his bare
feet and legsinto the unknown.
Apparently it is an amazing
experience feeling the oddities
hidden in the mud sliding up between
your toes as you eventually get to the
post where the bungee can be undone.
Now covered in mud,cold, pretty
dam angry, and with no footwear, the
operation began to dig out his
gummies.
Ihave no idea how long this took, but
it was getting pretty dark, no doubt
along with his mood, when I
eventually called him to discover it
had been aparticularly hard slog in
the mudfor muchofthe day —toput
it politely.
He had to hose himself down, before
getting dressed and into his vehicle
for the drivehome. However, this
muddy adventure wasn’t afirst.
Afew days earlier, at another
property while checking stags, he had
also got stuckinthe mud, andwas
almost on all fours as he just managed
to pull himself to safety.
During this adventure he had his
hand on his phone at one stage
thinking the onlyway out might be to
ring ahelicopter to comeand pluck
him to safety.
While we can look back and laugh —
and it is even funnier whentold first
hand —the mud, wet and daily grind,
isn’t aload of laughs for the farming
community at the moment.
Farmers plug on each day to ensure
the health of their stock, albeit bare
footed, bare legged or not.
But even in these dire times being
able to laugh aboutthe day’s follies is
helping them to keep on going.
What is working well for Waimak elderly and what is not
Health services, transport, housing and
safety are the key areas identified as
needing improvement after consultation
with the elderlyinthe Waimakariri
community.
The Waimakariri AgeFriendly Advisory
Grouphas been consulting and askingthe
elderly whatthey think is working well,
Vicarage Views to offer affordable homes
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
7
New residents could be moving into
Kaikōura’sVicarageViews subdivisionnext
year.
Sincethe resourceconsent was
approved in May, developerGarry
Robertson has beenworking with
localbuilders to plan the seven
hectare subdivision at Ludstone
Road.
The development was subject to a
$7.8 millioninjection from the
government’s infrastructure
acceleration fund,administered
through Kainga Ora, along withthe
130 hectare Ocean Ridge subdivision,
to the south.
‘‘We wouldn’t have been able to do it
without that funding,’’MrRobertson
said.
‘‘Thealternative would be to split it
up into 30 big sites with septic tanks,
whichwould have been an inefficient
use of land and wouldn’t giveyou the
affordable housing the town needs.’’
He is planning to offer arange of
affordable houses, older person’s
housing and somemore upmarket
unitsinthe 80 section development.
He was aiming for the lowest priced
sections at $675,000 to $775,000.
That would buya550to600 square
metresectionwith a120 to 160 square
metre, threebedroom house and
garage, withviews of the Kaikōura
Mountain rangeand the sea.
The more upmarket sections will
have amore elevated views and a160
to 200 square metre house, and could
sell for closer to $1 million.
Mr Robertsonsaid the homeswould
Welcoming and smart
The Cheviot Area School office is sporting
anew mural, and aplaygroundupgrade is
well underway.
The projects, which have seen mums,
dads and pupils pitch in over the school
holidays, are all part of apush to brighten
up the school, make it welcoming and
smart.
Mel van Reenen saysshe initiated the
mural.
It is based on designs and ideasfrom
students,under the guidanceofartist,
Mark Larsen from Larsen Signs Kaiapoi.
Supported by funding from Creative
Communities Scheme, Mel says she and
students met at Mark’s studioinKaiapoi,
whereheasked what Cheviotand the
school meant to them.
Whilethe project had been delayed
because of Covid, Mel says the end result is
an inclusivedesignofactivities, sport,
recreation, and placesspecial to the
district.
They are embraced with the names of
Call for Government to fully
fund training scholarships
By SHELLEY TOPP
NEWS
The North Canterbury News, July 27, 2023
WILLIAMS MCKENZIE LAWYERS ADVERTISING FEATURE
13
The lead principal of the Rangiora
Community of Learning Group,
Puketeraki Kāhui Ako, wants to see the
Government fully fund 100 teacher
training scholarships.
If such aforwardthinking initiative,
with aguaranteed teaching job after
training was funded, it would go along
way towards solving the teacher
shortage crisis, Brian Price, the
Swannanoa School principal, says.
Mr Price would also like teacher/
student ratios reduced to lessen stress
on teachers.
‘‘People think the teachers' strikes are
all about more money’’ he says.
‘‘But what is more important to us is
reducing the teacherstudent ratios.’’
Swannanoa School has a1to29 ratio
for Year 4students and above, while
Year 3has a123 ratio.
If the ratio could be kept at 123 right
through to Year 8that would require five
more teachers at the school, but it would
make ‘‘such abig difference’’, Mr Price
says.
‘‘Teachers are generally very, very
hard working people who want to be the
best teacher they can be for every single
child.
‘‘Reducing class sizes is the best way to
help teachers do this,’’ he says.
However, with some principals
reporting that the teacher shortage
crisis is the worst they have
experienced, finding those extra
teachers is not going to be easy.
Although Mr Price has seen evidence
of the teacher shortage crisis and
teacher burnout in North Canterbury, he
believes the area is in abetter position
than most because it is widely
considered to be agreat place to work in.
Brian Price
However, he says more work needs to
be done to promote the teaching
profession in apositive way.
‘‘Teaching is afantastic, really
rewarding job. It is ajob where you can
really make apositive difference,’’ he
says.
‘‘We need to promote that more.’’
He would also like to see amore
bipartisan approach to education with
all political parties working together
with teachers to create one strategic
plan for the next 15 years for aclear path
forward.
‘‘Imagine what we could achieve if we
did that,’’ he says.
SUSTAINABLY REDUCING PESTS
AND DISEASES IN AGRICULTURE
Soilisaliving ecosystemand
90% of soil function is biologically
driven. Organicmatterand living
organisms are responsible forthe
majority of what soildoes andits
influence on plant growth and fertility.
There are 3main
properties of soil
1. Physical (the type of soilsand, silt,
clayetc).
2. Chemical(acidity,alkalinity,
nitrogen, phosphorus,
potassium etc).
3. Biological(macroand microlivingorganisms
in the soil,
plant and animal).
To build the physical structureofsoil
and regulate chemical processes in
it, thebiological makeup of the soil
is critical. Ahandful of healthy soil
willcontain more livingorganisms
thanthere havebeenhumansinall
of Earth’s history.These organisms
and their by-products (collectively
known as“organic matter”) form
the heart of the soil and have a
significantinfluence on plant growth
and fertility.
As soilfunctionincreases,sowill
the ability of soil to poweritself
and feed the plants that grow in
it, resultingingrowing more with
less. It’sbetter for theenvironment,
and your business investment, to
restoreyoursoiltoahighfunctioning
level thatfeeds theplants, rather
thanfeeding theplantsdirectly on
dysfunctionalsoil.
The activities of the soil microbial
community can influence the
compounds released from the
plant roots, setting up complex
feedback loopsbetween plants and
their associated soil communities.
These interactions can affect the
plants’ susceptibility or resistance to
pests and diseases in various ways.
Healthy soil contributes greatly
to healthy plants.
When it comestopest diseasecontrol,
it is acomplex topic,however one
fact is generally true;most insects do
not attack healthyplants,rather they
look for signals put out by damaged
or unhealthyenvironments. The best
method of eradicatingpests and
diseaseistosolve the issue of why
they are there in the firstplace.
Complexitiesarise becausehealthy
soil is avery dynamic ecosystem,
so soil communities canrapidly
change in response to biological
and environmental disturbances.
Each year it has brought hundreds into the North
should be no different, the PromotionsAction committee
says.
Fortysites have been registeredinand around the
The number is limited to 40 as people have found it hard
Adding his personal touch to aproven winning
recipe, brought national success for Kaiapoi
Butcher Fred Hicklin.
The owner of Cattermoles Butchery of Kaiapoi,
says he added just a“wee touch” of his own special
mix of herbs and spices, to his shop’s popular Dry
Cured Bacon and the judges liked it —awarding
him asilver medal at the Retail Meat New
Zealand’s recent 100% New Zealand Bacon and
Ham Awards.
Fred says everything done to their entry was the
same as they have done in the past.
‘‘It’s cured onsite here in Kaiapoi, in an oldfashioned
chip smoker, with sugar and salts.
‘‘I like it because it’s atraditional recipe that’s
won in the past, but Iadded my own twist to the
process and we are very happy it earned us asilver
award at the bacon and ham awards.’’
Judges sampled over 151 entries, submitted by 42
retailers countrywide, looking at the aroma, taste,
colour, how well it was cured and how well it tasted
when cooked, to decide on 28 winners.
The two Supreme Winners of the 100% New
Zealand Bacon and Ham Awards presented by
NZPork, went to Hasting Butchers Wild Game.
Fred Hicklin took over Cattermoles Butchery two
and half years ago after working there for the
previous 10 years.
‘‘I took it over from Chris Beech who had owned
the company for 28 years after he took it over from
Gary Cattermole.’’
The business has been afeature of Kaiapoi for
over 50 years, and is the last remaining butcher
shop in Kaiapoi.
But knowing he had several previous awardwinning
small goods products associated with the
business, meant Fred took ayear off from
competing at anational level when he took over.
‘‘I gave it ayear to get things settled here at
Cattermoles when Itook over, then we started
planning to enter national competitions again.’’
He says previous owner Chris Beech still comes
down each week to help out at the shop and to pass
on his experience of winning several national
titles.
The Gisborneborn but Kaiapoiraised butcher is
also in the final year of his apprenticeship.
‘‘Chris has been helping me out with this too.’’
He admits the awards ceremony was still abit of
ablur.
‘‘I flew to Auckland and went to the awards
dinner with my brother Erracht. It still takes a
moment to recall what happened.
‘‘I’m glad Iwent there and I’m proud of the
support Ihave from our customers and Kaiapoi.’’
Fred says he and his six staff are working hard,
curing and preparing all the tasty small goods and
meat cuts they offer customers. They are looking
forward to the next competition on their books –the
national sausage awards.
‘‘We are aiming for atop placing, to do well for
Kaiapoi,’’ says Fred.
Asilver medal was awarded to Harris Farms at
Domett, near Cheviot and abronze to Hibbards
Nerf shootout fun for all ages
By JOHN COSGROVE
Achance sighting at an op shop in
Rangiora sparked the gem of an idea
and helped Ryan Edmunds of Loburn
create afun event for young people in
his community.
‘‘I was looking around the op shop and
saw ahuge box of Nerf blasters about to
be thrown out.
‘‘I asked about them and they were
happy for me to take them off their
hands.
‘‘I knew Ihad afew lying in my
wardrobe at home, and that’s when I
thought of holding aNerf Showdown to
keep young people entertained in the
district.’’
ANerf Blaster is atoy gun made by
Hasbro, that fires foam darts, arrows,
discs, or foam balls.
Most are manually powered using
pressurised air and have been abig
seller with children and exponents of
cosplay since 1992.
Many popular culture action movies
and online games have tieins with
Hasbro to make the Nerf blasters as
merchandising.
Ryan (21) helps run aKarate Dojo with
his brother at the North Loburn
Community Hall and set up aplaying
arena inside the hall to challenge and
entertain the participants.
‘‘I wanted to give the kids in the area
something to do on the weekend while
it’s wet and cold.’’
The young entrepreneur says his
parents even thought the idea had merit,
so he started planning for the day.
‘‘When Iwas younger, all Iwanted to
do was hang out with kids my age and
have afun day, this is aperfect way to
have some safe fun on acold day.’’
He scouted through other op shops
and online as he assembled acollection
of working blasters and lots of spare
Charge ... Ten year olds Ella RothschildStewart (left) and Fergus Webb leap over one of
the obstacles at the Nerf Showdown, as Will Armstrong(10), Chester Densen (11) and
organiser Ryan Edmunds provide covering fire inside the North Loburn Community Hall.
foam ammo.
‘‘My parents set up the play area in the
dojo on my recent 21st birthday and we
had awhole lot of friends there.
‘‘We all had so much fun so Ithought it
was time to extend it out into the
community.’’
He says he made it an indoor activity,
as away to help young people get some
exercise and to run around, helping to
ease the stress of having lots of children
After six years at Carters, Aaron moved
Meanwhile Lewis’ career also started in
the industry withabuilding
Aaron says he always wanted to work for
himself, so when he started lookingfor
Hunters to gather at Mandeville Tavern
The Mandeville Tavern deer and pig
hunt is areunion of hunters old, who are
now being joined by agreat bunch of
keen young hunters, says tavern owner
Lindsay Peters.
He has owned the pub for more than
three decades and says the traditional
hunt provides an opportunity for
hunters aged 16 and over to get out and
bag apig or deer, and be eligible for a
prize.
The competition runs from Friday,
August 18 with the final weigh in at 2pm
at the Mandeville Tavern in Raven
Quay, Kaiapoi, on August 20.
Hunters taking part in the Mandeville
Pig Hunting committee’s competition
will be taking aim at pigs and deer over
the duration of the hunt.
Mr Peters says deer joined the line up
in recent times, and the committee has
decided to continue to confine it to just
deer and pigs, and not open it up to any
other animals.
Mr Peters says the prize pool for the
annual event is $10,000, including a
$1000 rifle sponsored by Hazeldine
Construction.
he has the expertise in sales, and manages
the daytodayrunning of the business,
while Lewistakes on the role of project
manager with his building background.
Stonewood Homes General Manager
Gregg Somerville says while the market
acrossNew Zealand is quiet,hebelieves it
is an ideal time to be starting anew
business as you get a‘‘chancetoget
established to be ready to grow when the
marketrebounds’’.
‘‘Historically,home building enquiries
have alwaysbeen strong in North
Canterbury, and the time was right to
introduceanew franchise.’’
Aaron and Lewis are hopingthe opening
of their showroom will see asolid turnout
of those interested in homebuilding, and
are alreadyworkingonhouse and land
On-farm maintenance crucial
By SHELLEY TOPP
For busyRangioradairy farmer
RichardStalker onfarmmaintenance
can suck up alot of time keepinghis
team away from the core business of
milkingcows.
So havingateam member who has
been willing to takeonthe farm
maintenance role alongside his other
farm workhas been hugely beneficial.
Ben Leech began working with
Richard, who is aneighbour, during the
school holidays, thenjoined the team
fulltime when he left school three
years ago.
He now livesonthe farm.
It is adream job for Ben who has
always wantedtobeafarmer,and says
he loves working on the farm.
‘‘Youare working outsideevery day
and there is always something new to
learn,’’ he says.
Ben’smain job on the farm is
managing aherd of calves, 350 yearlings
and 300 twoyearolds.
But he also looks after the repairsand
maintenance of the farm's machinery
including tractors, motorbikes, milking
shed equipment and irrigation units.
‘‘Benhelps to keep everything
running smoothly,’’ Richardsays.
But if there is anythingBen and the
team cannot fix Richard callsafriend
Glen has been helping Richardwith
more than10years.
He has also been teachingBen
additional generalonfarm
maintenance skills, and saysheenjoys
helping him because he is keentolearn.
Richard says keeping on top of farm
maintenance is an important part of
running adairy farm.
‘‘If we have amechanical failure in
the milking shed we can’t milkour
cows. If the irrigation unitsmalfunction
we can’tirrigatethe fields.Soitisvital
FARM MAINTENANCE
The North Canterbury News, July 27, 2023
23
Nairn Electrical, proudly supporting rural Canterbury since 1975.
Waimakariri Young FarmersClub vice
chair Bella Archer wants to shinethe light
on an important, but oftenoverlooked
element of effectivefarm maintenance —
the farmer.
Withcalvingand lambing starting now
for most farmers, Bella says it is agood
timetotalk aboutpreparing the most
important thingsafarmer may need.
How can you prepare yourselffor
calving and lambing, and how you take
careofyourself over this period,are
problems facedevery year by farming
families.
So Bella has collected some tips from
peoplewithexperience in the industry to
try and help her community prepare for
the birthing season.
1. Precook bulk meals and freeze themfor
future use
There are so many accountsonFacebook
and Instagram that offer free recipes you
can easily cook. Bella recommends
spending afew hours on your daysoff,
cooking meals thatyou love and putting
theminthe freezerfor thosebusy days
ahead.
She says Facebook sites like NZ Young
Farmers, NZ FarmingTasmanYoung
FarmersRegion,Beef +Lamb New
Zealand and What's For Smoko, all offer
simple and enjoyable recipes as they know
justwhat it's liketobeout there during
these busy times.
2. Stocking up yourfridge and your freezer
Go and do abig shop of allthe things you
regularly use and stock up for the busy
times.
Thisissoyou are not worrying about
having to refill your fridge/freezer.
Meatand vegetables arevery easily
stored in the freezer for quick meals when
you are verybusy,says Bella.
3. Make acalving/lambing kit
Thisshould be filled with snacks that are
highly nutritious and greatfor those quick
pickmeups whenyou don't have time to
for the lambing season is helpful. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
stop for long.
Theseare best stored in the shed or the
ute, so you havequick and easy access to
them,Bella says, and don't forgettoput in
achocolate bar or two for atreat.
4. Take abreather
We know thereare going to be some
challenging timesoverthe next few
months and sometimesthe best way to deal
with themistotake afiveminute break to
refresh yourself.
Iknow we alloften think we havejust to
much to do, but taking thatbreak could be
just the thing neededtoget your mind
refreshed and be readyfor what'snext.
5. Rest
Bellasays rest is so underrated during
thesebusytimes.
All the expertssaysensuringfarmers
are getting enough sleep is so important.
Sleepallows your bodytorecover and
helpstokeep your mind freshand allows
your immune systemtofunction
efficiently.
All these tips are designed to help keep
farmers going through calving/lambing.
planted and left to fend for
themselves.
Rangiora Nursery Production
ManagerRichard Parrysays caring for
yourtrees is just as important as
caring for any stock units on afarm.
‘‘They are an investment and
farmers should make surethey protect
their investments.’’
He says when many farmersmake
the conscious effort to plantfor the
future, and decidetoplant ablock of
trees, (about 1000 stemsper hectare)
theywill allwork with aforestry
consultant to find the bestgenetics
withthe best growth rates, lookathow
the tree branches and learn how to
maintain it.
‘‘Usuallywith the help of the
consultant, farmers undertake
maintenance of their forestry blocks
for the first two years, following up
withpruning and thinning during
years sixtoten.’’
Richard saysduring the first year
farmers must control theundergrowth
in the blocktostop weeds competing
with the trees. Weeds compete with
the trees,reducinggrowth through
lack of moisture during the summer.
‘‘Spotspraying is essentialas it
promotes aquickcanopy to suppress
regrowth fromweeds includingbroom
and gorse.
‘‘Theyalso need to lookatfertiliser
applications if needed, and pest
control duringthe first year.
‘‘After threeyears, the treesthere
will be hardyenough and of agood size
to lookafter themselves.’’
Rangiora Nursery is an openfield
nursery of 110 hectares, sown
exclusively in Pinus radiata, overtwo
FARM MAINTENANCE
The North Canterbury News, July 27, 2023
How to choose the right fencing contractor
Installing or repairing fences, whether
around the home, farm, or business,is an
investment.
Agood fence, regularly maintained, has
the potentialtoadd considerable value to
your property, and give you peaceofmind.
With unprecedented levels of fence
repairs being undertaken across the
country, PhilCornelius, Fencing
Contractors Association NZ president,
points out that findingthe rightfencing
contractor for the jobhas neverbeen more
important.
Wheretostart
When choosing aquality fencing
contractor,you should look for a
professional whose workmanship is based
on longestablished best industry
practices.
They will have the right toolsfor the job
—investinginmachinery, plant, and tools
to carry out the work in atimely and
efficientmanner.
Additionally, they willhavethe
expertiseand supplier contacts to select
the correct materials for the project.
Many fencing contractors offer ahuge
diversity of services fromrural and farm
fencing through to residential,security,
civiland roading works.
Some construct retainingwalls,
viticulture,horticultural structures, and
orchard developments —the list goes on.
Engaging acontractoryou have used
before, or whohas done agreat job for a
colleague,can be agood option.
Alternatively, the directoryonthe
FCANZwebsiteprovides an excellent list
of fencingcontractors who work around
the country.
What to look for
Thereare many aspectstoconsider when
choosing afencingcontractor — be
cautious of being tempted by the cheapest
priceorwho is available immediately to
carryout your work.
On the job ... Afencing contractor at work installing apost and wire fence.
As BenjaminFranklin allegedly said:
The bitterness of poor quality remains
longafter the sweetness of low price is
forgotten.
Skilled fencers are in demand and the
fencing industry is experiencing growth
like it hasn’tseen in some time.
Always look for afencing contractor who
hasaproven workrecord.
If you don’t know them, ask to speak
with some of their previous customers.
Choosingthe right fencingcontractor for
thejob, whether ruralorresidential,
should never be just aboutprice,Philsays.
FCANZ members are providedwith the
latest industryinformation and have
access to several upskillingopportunities
Workers new to Hurunui
get warm winter welcome
Farm workers and managers new to the
Hurunui District received awarm
winterwelcome at a New to the Area
meet and greet evening in Culverden
recently.
It was organised by NorthCanterbury
Vets.
Hurunui District Council’s
Welcoming Communitiesfacilitator
Natalie Paterson says the event was a
great opportunitytointroduce the
Welcoming Communitiesprogramme to
support newcomers, and migrants, in
accessing everyday services such as
banks,medical centres and childcare.
‘‘As partofour next steps in Hurunui
District Council'sWelcoming
Communities programme, we are going
out to our communities to do astock
take of what is available to support our
newcomers and migrants, and to chat to
peopleabout their experiences in
Hurunui.
‘‘Community events such as these are
great ways to connect,’’ Ms Paterson
says.
North Canterbury Veterinary Clinic
veterinarian Alistair Kenyonsays the
meet and greet was held onceayear,
shortly after new farm staff arrived on
farm.
‘‘The aim is to give new dairyclients
and workersanopportunity to meet
other people in the area, which can
often be hard when you move to an
unfamiliar place, and especially as we
come intothe winter months.
‘‘The meet and greet is also an
opportunityfor those new to the area to
meet the team here at the vet clinic,
whom theywill be dealingwith
throughout the year.
‘‘All areas of the business deal with
our clients at some stage, so it’s great for
them to be abletoput aface to the name
and start building those relationships
early on,’’Mr Kenyon says.
About 32 people, including NCVC
staff, attended the event and Mr Kenyon
says it was valuable for newcomers to
hear there are networks and resources
like Welcoming Communities available
to theminHurunuiDistrict.
‘‘One of our longterm clients took
information home to havefor their new
farm managerarriving fromthe
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black
Philippines.’’
Hurunui Mayor Marie Blackstressed
the importance of helping newcomers
establishstrong community
connections as avaluable way to ensure
their success in their new way of life,
and encourage theiractive involvement
in civic activities.
‘‘Our newcomers bring valuable skills
into our rural areas.
‘‘Helping them to integrate into their
new communitiessupports them to
achieve their goals, which is one of the
Local Government Act’swellbeings.’’
Hurunui DistrictCounciljoined the
Welcoming Communities programme
last year.
The programme is led by Immigration
New Zealand (INZ) in collaboration
with the Ministry of Ethnic
Communities and the HumanRights
Commission.
It brings together local government
and communities to make places more
Old foes to meet in Nth Canty rugby final
RUGBY
By LINDSAY KERR
and PETERWILLIAMS
Archrivals GlenmarkCheviot
and Kaiapoi will again faceeach
other in the North Canterbury
rugbyseniorgrand final this
Saturday.
Between the two they have
dominated the winners spot for
the past six years.
GlenmarkCheviot
overpowered last year’s beaten
finalist Hurunui 330 in its semi
finalclash, while Kaiapoi was
made to work hardbefore
heading off Ashley 2214.
Both games were played in
atrocious wet weather, withthe
OmihiDomain game called off 10
minutes from the end,due to the
overheadand ground conditions.
In playoff games for theminor
positions,Ohoka againdealt to
Saracens, taking fifth placewith
a3319 victory, and Oxford dealt
to Woodend 4112 to secure
seventh place.
The division two final will
matchupKaiapoiand Ashley.
Kaiapoi beat Ohoka 2716,
whileAshleybeat defending
champion Kaikoura 1810.
GlenmarkCheviot vHurunui
Any foreign visitor with little
knowledge of New Zealand’s
passion for club rugby would
have questioned the sanity of
thoseplayingand supporting the
teams at the Omihi Domain.
Therewas no let up withthe rain,
creating aplaying strip that
became increasingly more
treacherous.
This was not aided by water
that steadily flowed from an
adjoining tennis court.
Both sides started with clear
intentions of letting the backsrun
with the ball, but when
circumstances steadily got worse,
the GlenmarkCheviot forward
pack went aboutlaying a
foundation to buildraids in
Hurunui territory.
The combined side’s firsttwo
efforts of running the ball
resulted in the ball carrier falling
over,but when secondfiveeight
Mike Keane ran on an angle near
the Hurunuiline, an Andrew
Hull try ensued following apush
over from afive metrescrum.
Hurunui stayed in contention
and had promisingmoments of
attack, but 10 minutes from half
time,GlenmarkCheviot worked
its way back into an attacking
position.
After aseriesofpick and go,
lockTom Blyth crashed over so
score.
The game wentintothe break
withGlenmarkCheviot leading
12nil, but Hurunuidid not look
out of contention.That was to
change onlyseven minutes into
the half when the Glenmark
Cheviot forwards attacked the
lineand Andrew Zuppicich
scored.
The try was converted, and
Hurunui’swinning chances
became slim.
Withmore confidence and the
seemingly inevitability of the
final result, the local teams
confidencegrew and at the mid
way point of the half asustained
blind side attackresulted in
Hamish Gibb —playing his 50th
senior match—scoring.
The fifthand final try came
onlyfive minutes later when
propHaydenO’Donnellwas
usheredover the line in awall of
verymuddy jerseys.
With10minutes of play
remaining both captains agreed
to call it fulltime.
While the GlenmarkCheviot
packcontrolled much of the play,
MikeKeane played an
instrumental partindictating
playwhenever the backs had the
luxury of any ballretention. Noone
Kaiapoi vAshley
As Kaiapoi and Ashley ran out on
to ableak and rainsodden
Kaiapoi Oval,both teams were
probably buoyedbythe news
their Division 2teams had both
beaten higherranked opponents,
Ohoka and Kaikoura
respectively, to qualifyfor the
Division 2final nextSaturday.
AshleykeptKaiapoi pinned on
its own linefor many minutes
early in the match, and showed
their positive intent by spurning
apenalty goalopportunity.
Dogged Kaiapoi defencekept
Ashleyatbay until eventually an
ambitiouspass in treacherous
conditions allowedKaiapoi’s
ZachMcKay to intercept.
When he was hauledin, he
found Mat Joyita in support, and
in the one movement it was now
Kaiapoi’sturn to spendtime on
attack.
Withpoints always likely to be
hardtocome by in the
treacherous conditions,
Kaiapoi’stactics differedfrom
Ashley’s,and whenalongrange
penalty opportunity presented
itself, theytook the shot and
Taine JacobsLawsonobliged
withanexcellent kick.
Kaiapoi looked to be gaininga
bit of ascendancy, especially at
set scrum time and at the 25
minute mark it was rewarded
withthe firsttry of the match,
fittingly scored by one of
Kaiapoi’shardestworkers,Ryan
Clark.
But Ashley was far from aspent
force and by halftime theyhad
scored twice.
Firstly,Ashley’s Playerofthe
Day,Luke Gold,scoredwide out,
and thencaptain,Louis James,
playing his 50th Division 1match
for Ashley, crashed overaftera
concerted forward attack on the
Kaiapoi line. Both were
converted by Nathan Emeryand
a10point deficit had been turned
into afour pointlead with Ashley
to playwith the bitter southerly
at their backs in thesecondhalf.
This challengeseemed to
stiffen Kaiapoi’s resolve. Its
forwards in particular, with
ConnorSmithoutstanding,led
the way andput Ashley under
extreme pressure when it did get
the ball.
Ten minutesinto the second
half, the hardworking Kaiapoi
lock, Bailey Counihan, scored a
try to put Kaiapoi back in front.
Both packs threw everything
into it, and atitanicbattle ensued
for the many supporters who
bravedthe frigidconditions.
Despite playing intothe wind,
Kaiapoi won theterritorial battle
in the second halfand when
replacement flanker Jarred
Gilmore crashed overaftera
sustained period on attack,
JacobsLawson’s conversionput
the gameout of reach. The
standard of forward play by both
teams was exceptional.
For the secondhalf Ashley was
also inspired by having the
services of veteranflanker,
RichieHancox, who came offthe
bench for his 250th Senior match
in acareer thatbeganback in
2004 –atruly outstanding
contribution.
Kaiapoi 22 (Ryan Clark,Bailey
(Luke Gold, LouisJames tries.
Saracens vOhoka
Ohoka struckfirst withagreat try
to Scott Allin and, as per usual
under challenging conditions,
Allin converted his try.
Just three minuteslater Ohoka
struckagain, putting the winger
GeorgeSmith in for atry through
some slickpassing out the back
line despite the conditions.
It was converted by Allin.
In the 24th min Ohoka scored a
third try for the first half through
some strong running from Ben
Gold. The first halflooked like
one way traffic withOhoka
successfully using the wind to
gain field position.
Not wanting to finish the first
half withnopoints Saracens
scoredanintercept try converted
by Marty Lockyer, then another
nice try at the 37thmin also
converted, to go intothe halfwith
Ohokaleading 2114.
The second half was awell
fought battlebetween the sides
with Saracens scoring first at the
62nd min.The try was
unconverted, and this was to be
the lastpoints Saracens scored in
the game. Ohoka was
determined, and showed no
defensive weaknesses in the last
20 minutes running in two more
tries —one more through Ben
Gold who had agreatgame,and
then agame killer by half back
Tom Wedlake, which was to be
the final pointsscored in the
game. Thisfinal try was
converted to finishthe game
3319 in favour of Ohoka.
Some great rugby was played
despite the conditions,and a
massive effort from the Ohoka
side to beat Saracens at home for
the secondtime in successive
weekends, to take the plate final.
Wet Weather Response
Once again July has proven tobeawet and wild
month in the Waimakariri.
More than 150mm of rain fell in some areas between
Saturday night and Monday morning.
Council staff and Civil Defence set up an Emergency
Operations Centre (EOC) on Saturday to deal with the
level of service requests and tomonitor roads and
river levels.
MayorDan Gordon says he would like to thank to staff,
contractors andemergencyservices personnel who
workedtirelesslyassisting residents with flooding and
drainage issues during thechanging situation.
“Thank you also to theresidents ofTuahiwi who selfevacuated
at the request of Civil Defence when there
were concerns the Cam River may breach its banks
on Sunday night. Aspecial mention also to the Civil
Defence Volunteers teams who supportedthe welfare
centre at Riverside Church inKaiapoi overnight on
Sunday,” Mayor Gordon says.
Now that the weather warning has been lied
the focus turns to the clean-up. Council staff will
endeavour to make their way through the large
number ofservice calls.
These calls are triaged, and the mostseriousones
aredealt with first. Events like this can howevertake
months to work through the volume of requests.
Let's Talk About Waikuku Fire Station Lease
The Waikuku Fire Brigade has occupied an area
of Recreation Reserve on Waikuku Domain for
many decades.
In 2017 responsibility for Fire Brigades transferred to
the newly created Fire and Emergency New Zealand
(FENZ). Asaresult, Council issued a formal lease
to Fire and Emergency. Since then, FENZ have
developed aplan for all their properties, including
those leased from councils.
Part of this includes apolicy that all personnel are
to have a‘shower within the hour’ of an incident so
they can decontaminate and not take contaminants
or carcinogens with them into their vehicles, homes
or workplaces.
To meet these requirements, the Waikuku Fire Station
needs to be upgraded.
It’sproposed to installanew block to housetwo toilets,
two showers and adecontamination bench. Detailed
plans can beviewedatwaimakariri.govt.nz/letstalk
An additional portacom will be used asatraining and
meeting room with an office.
FENZ haverequested asmall addition to theexisting
area of land they lease. The land sits in between the
current leased area and the Waikuku Campground.
The land to be leased from Council is Recreation Reserve,
managed under the Reserves Act1977, andCouncil is
required to seek community views onany changes.
We want toknow ifyou agree with Council updating
our current lease with Fire and Emergency to include
the additional parcel of land.
An insight into volunteering
Asimulatedemergencyresponse
saw multiple victims being rescued
fromHanmerSprings Forest, with
first respondersfrom arange of
agencies attending to the
‘‘injured’’.
On handwere 16 young people
Theywere attending theYouth
Hurunui District Council Youth
attendees were exposed to arange
of emergency scenarios involving
Police, St John, Red Cross,
LandSAR,Fire and Emergency NZ
‘‘Atthe end of the week, all the
says.
Participantsended the week’s
IzzyBaille of Home Schools
Hanmer says she chose to
particular interestinfire safety in
the built environment.
‘‘I found the week super
interesting and really enjoyed
being apart of it. It was really all
good. The blindfolded playground
easyitwas to get disoriented,’’ Izzy
said.
Grace Leen of RangioraHigh
School agreed she would
“definitely” do it again.
‘‘Overall, Ilearnt more about
teamwork andthe different roles
needed withinemergency services
and how to get abig task done as
quickly as possible to savelives.’’
Grace says she had chosen to
volunteer withthe Amberley
FENZgroupmanager for
Russell says it was heart warming
to see thenext generation of
we’revery supportive of
programmes that encourage
volunteers, now and in future–it’s
abit of future proofing for
volunteers. The young adults
involved this week showed agreat
and keenness to support their
communities.They gaveupaweek
