Local green spaces recognised by
Keep Wales Tidy campaign
news
Recycling trials
could extend to
other areas
Canolfan Beulah Garden and
Thornhill Cemetery are among
several local green spaces to have
been recognised in the Keep Wales
Tidy ‘Green Flag’ Awards.
Canolfan Beulah picked up a
community award while Thornhill
Cemetery was one of the winners that
picked up a full Green Flag Award.
Canoflan Beulah Garden provides
a haven of green space just a
few yards from the busy Beulah
crossroads in the village. The
garden is enjoyed by both the
general public as well as members
of the church.
Other local winners of the full Green
Flag include Parc Cefn Onn, Heath
Greenhill School
could expand
under new
proposals
Greenhill Special School in Rhiwbina
could expand its intake under new
proposals put forward by Cardiff
Council.
Under the proposals, Greenhill
would operate as a single school for
learners aged 11-18 across two sites
including the current site in Rhiwbina,
and a new site at Ty Glas Avenue,
Llanishen from September 2026
onwards.
A recent Council report that
outlined plans for primary,
secondary and special schools in
Cardiff, acknowledged the growing
population of learners with complex
Park, Hailey Park, and Forest Farm.
Whitchurch Community Garden
on Erw Las was also among the
community award winners. The
awards are judged independently
against a range of strict criteria,
including biodiversity, community
involvement, cleanliness and
environmental management.
The Green Flag Award is all about
connecting people with the very
best parks and green spaces. It’s
the benchmark for parks and green
spaces in the UK and beyond.
Wherever you see a Green Flag, you
know you’re visiting an exceptional
place with the highest standards.
learning needs, autism spectrum
conditions, and emotional health and
wellbeing needs in the city.
Greenhill School would increase its
places from 64 to 96 places under
the proposals. It would form part of a
city-wide expansion to provide 200
new places.
The school was recently praised in
an Estyn report. Inspectors found that
the school took great pride in offering
a diverse array of learning activities,
with a strong focus on outdoor
education.
A recycling trial - which has seen
10,000 homes across Cardiff
separate their recyclable waste
at the kerbside - has proven so
effective that the Council is looking
to buy 9 additional specially
designed trucks to collect glass
separately so the scheme can be
rolled out across the city.
Residents, including those in
Rhiwbina, who took part in the
recycling pilot, were given reusable
red and blue sacks to separate
their recycling into, with paper and
cardboard going into red sacks,
and plastic, tin and metals into blue
sacks. Residents in the trial areas
were already using a separate
container for glass jars and bottles.
The results, when compared with
the rest of the city where residents
put all recyclables into green
plastic bags, were startling. The
contamination rate - items that are
put out for recycling but cannot be
recycled - reduced from 30% to
approximately 6%.
Over a 3-year period, the new
three-bag recycling collection
system could be rolled out to other
residents across the city.
Street lighting
updates
Residents who have downloaded
the Cardiff Council's Gov app on
their mobile devices can now
report issues with street lighting.
The latest release of the app,
available to download on the
Google Play Store or Apple's App
store, allows residents to quickly
and conveniently tell the Council
about a street lighting fault.
