‘Surviving war is
a matter of luck’
THE KOREAN Armistice
Agreement brought about a
complete cessation of hostilities
of the Korean War, and
Forbes Taylor well knows the
70th anniversary of that very
important ceasefire date – July
27, 1953.
Back 70 years ago Forbes,
a former Woolston resident,
who now lives at Ngaio Marsh
Retirement Village, was near
the frontline of a war that
had been running for three
years.
He remembers on the night
after the ceasefire had been
announced there were flares let
off and search lights shone into
the sky above the new division
between north and south.
“It took effect at 10 o’clock at
night. The armistice was read
out to us, and then suddenly all
the war zone lit up with search
lights and rockets and things.
It was a very colourful display
with all those lights from the
flare guns and search lights,”
he remembered the day
after celebrating his 92nd
birthday last week.
There was a feeling of
celebration amongst the allies
in the south because they had
won further ground to the
north of Seoul that would form
part of the new South Korea,
Forbes said.
The bitter conflict began in
June 1950, with North Korea
supported by China and the
Soviet Union. Talks concerning
an armistice had started as
early as July 10, 1951, but the
frontline remained a dangerous
place. Forbes said it was really
a matter of luck as to whether
he and other fellow servicemen
survived.
It was June 1953 and Forbes
had not long been flown into
Gimpo Airport, near Seoul.
He had joined the Signals C or
‘Charlie Troop’ to help service
the telephone lines that were
used by 1st Commonwealth
division troops including in the
‘Battle of the Hook’.
Meeting
over
cruise
ship
concerns
LYTTELTON residents will get
an opportunity to voice their
concerns about the upcoming
cruise ship season and the impact
it may have on the community.
Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula Community Board
will host the meeting at 7pm
on Tuesday at The Loons on
Canterbury St. Representatives
from the Lyttelton Port Company,
Environment Canterbury,
ChristchurchNZ, the city council
and the NZ Cruise Association
will be on board to answer
questions.
The meeting comes after ECan
chair Peter Scott promised to find
a solution to reduce the impact of
cruise ship on its buses services
which are struggling to keep
up with demand. More than 70
cruise ships visited the Port of
Lyttelton over the past 12 months,
with almost 125,850 visitors
docking in the new purpose-built
Lyttelton terminal. The next
cruise ship season is due to start
in November.
Community board chair Lyn
Leslie said residents will be able
to engage with some of the key
agencies. •Turn to page 3
Ceremonial planting marks
start of reforestation project
THE FIRST native trees have
been planted at Te Kaio farm in
a joint project between Wairewa
Rūnanga and Orion Group.
The team from Orion joined
whānau from Wairewa on
Sunday for a blessing led by
Bishop Richard Wallace, iwi
rangatira and ECAN councillor
Iaean Cranwell, and Charisma
Rangipunga.
Following karakia and
speeches, the two groups joined
to plant two totara seedlings
and two kōwhai seedlings before
heading back to the farmhouse
to share kai and a cuppa.
“We’ve embarked on a
journey with Wairewa to return
the kahukura to Te Kaio. It
was a significant step on that
journey to stand at Te Kaio
today and join the whānau in
planting the first of what will
soon be many trees on this
whenua,” said Orion Group
chief executive Nigel Barbour,
who planted one of the trees
alongside Wairewa Rūnanga
chair Jaleesa Panirau.
Said Wairewa Orion steering
group member Ana Gray: “The
blessing on Sunday was such an
important step for us. It sets us
all on the right path forward for
TEAM UP: A joint reforestation project between Wairewa Rūnanga and Orion Group is
under way near Little River.
this intergenerational kaupapa.”
In February, Wairewa
Rūnanga, Te Kete o Wairewa (its
legal entity) and Orion Group
signed an agreement to recloak
Te Kaio farm, a 280-hectare
block of ex-farmland near Little
River, belonging to the rūnanga.
The planting ceremony marks
the start of work to plant 50,000
trees in the
first year of the long-term
project.
It will add to the significant
local efforts to return the
Peninsula to its former forested
state.
Once the replanting is
completed, both parties will
enter the carbon farming
market together and receive
a share of the carbon credits
issued via the New Zealand
Emissions Trading Scheme.
On behalf of Orion, Barbour
was gifted a pounamu taonga
(treasure) by the rūnanga, which
they blessed and gifted the
name Matatoki, one of the three
stars of Tautoru, or Orion’s Belt.
“It was really overwhelming, I
didn’t expect it and I’m certainly
incredibly grateful,” said
Barbour.
“We’re looking forward to
getting stuck into the mahi.”
Range of
solutions to
be discussed
•From page 1
“This meeting offers a chance
to listen to the local Lyttelton
community and understand their
views and concerns. It’s important
to hear from the
wider community
so we can gain
a collective
understanding of
a range of views,”
said Leslie (right).
“We want to
make sure everyone is heard.”
A range of possible solutions
to the Lyttelton community’s
concerns will be explored,
including potential approaches to
public transport congestion.
The meeting will be led by an
independent facilitator.
Said ChristchurchNZ general
manager of destination and
attraction Loren Heaphy: “Cruise
is a unique sector within the
visitor economy in that there are
numerous agencies responsible for
various aspects of the system. The
volume of visitors who arrive in
a destination on a cruise ship can
have both positive and negative
impacts for the community and
the economy. We recognise this
and are committed to working
alongside the industry on the
season ahead in a cohesive,
considered and collaborative way.”
Judson Bamford
Recipient of the
$2000 apprenticeship
award, sponsored by Laser
Plumbing Christchurch
East
The best part of the apprenticeship
so far has to be my work
mates – funny and relatable, just
good company to be around.
However, when it comes to the
worst part, digging holes is always
a bit of a drag.
In five years’ time I’m hoping
to be looking, if not serving, in
the New Zealand Defence Force,
most likely as a builder.
During the summer I enjoy
surfing, diving or quite frankly
anything to do with the sea. And
as the water cools down for the
winter I am very into my hockey
and, of course, skiing.
What I love about the Sumner
Ferrymead community is the
connections you have with
people. Whether they’re an old
Judson Bamford Tom Barker Zach Waite
friend from primary school,
or your dad’s friend’s son,
everyone knows everyone and it
creates a tight yet friendly community.
I am eternally grateful to
Laser Plumbing Christchurch
East and the Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation for this opportunity.
The award will help me out now
(with the purchase of tools) and
will further aid my career. Once
again, many thanks.
I am a second-year student at
pharmacology.
In five years’ time I plan to
have completed my degree
and possibly begun a research
career at a pharmaceutical
or biomedical company,
investigating treatments for
neurological disorders and
diseases.
In my downtime I enjoy
mountain biking and surfing, as
well as diving and running.
Living in the Sumner
Ferrymead community means I
get to enjoy both the close access
to the beach and hills, as well as
the close community in which I
have grown up in and now have
some great friends in.
I am extremely grateful for
being chosen as the recipient of
the Health Sciences Scholarship.
I want to thank RJ Begg and
Zack Waite
Recipient of the $5000
Science Scholarship,
sponsored by a Redcliffs
resident
I am a second-year tertiary
student, studying a Bachelor of
Software Engineering at Canterbury
University.
My career path is centred
around a key goal – to contribute
to solving important societal
problems with exciting innovative
technology.
I’m not sure I will be quite
there within five years. However,
I see myself in a role helping me
build the relevant experience and
skills to reach a level where I can
dedicate my efforts to projects I
will enjoy.
This could look like a role at
a start-up, getting the feel for
beginning-to-end product creation,
or being a part of a dynamic
team at an established innovative
firm.
I love taking an active relaxing
approach during my spare time.
You might spot me running
along the Summit Rd, out the
back at Sumner beach or at the
hockey turf. I also love a hit of
tennis down at the Redcliffs Tennis
Club, with a fierce inter-family
tennis match-up. I enjoy nothing
more than competing and a
bit of banter, meaning you would
find me most evenings down at
the UC basketball courts, or at
my flat table playing cards.
The Sumner Ferrymead community
couldn’t cater better to
a ‘do-ers’ or a ‘chillers’ lifestyle.
The multitude of high performance
sporting opportunities,
and the spider web of trails in the
Port Hills fulfil all your active
needs. A morning of serenity on
Sumner beach or a sun-soaked
cafe is never further then a
five-minute drive. This combination
of relaxation and activity has
certainly cultivated my love for
all parts of the community, and
scenery.
To the Redcliffs resident
who sponsored the award, the
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
trustees and others who make
these scholarships possible, I
can’t thank you enough for your
support and the impact you have
on the community.
Predator Free Port Hills is
a backyard and community
trapping programme which aims
to eliminate rats, possums and
mustelids from the Port Hills
and Lyttelton Harbour by 2050.
Our vision is to protect
native species and to see their
populations flourish in our
neighbourhoods, local parks
and reserves, farmland and bush
areas. The funds will be used
to support our Sumner Bays
to Taylor’s Mistake), funding
two community trap building
days, giving away native shrubs
to boost backyard biodiversity
and supporting a trial of the
Pleasant Farmers Market to
increase captures of mustelids in
particular.
In five years’ time, we aim to
have 4000 households trapping
on the Port Hills and in 10 years
time, we want to see landscapescale
predator control across the
entire Port Hills and our bird life
flourishing.
We are very grateful to the
sponsor for their vision and
foresight in sponsoring the
Environment Award. We are
facing a biodiversity crisis and
many of our birds, lizards
and insects are on the verge of
extinction. The financial support
offered by the award will enable us
Veteran looks back on Korean War
• From page 1
He remembers desperate
night-time attacks by the
Chinese, trying to capture Hook
valley territory before the July
ceasefire was called. During this
time repairs were needed on the
telephone lines. The Chinese
were repelled by United Nations
forces, he said.
On one frontline occasion, a
shell exploded about 40 yards
(36.5 metres) away. But it could
have easily been much, much
closer.
“I thought, good heavens, I
could have been there (under the
shell). I came to the conclusion:
surviving war is a matter of
luck,” he said.
Because he had arrived
towards the end of physical
warfare, Forbes spent much of
his 18 months of service during
the period of ceasefire. There
were moments of tension, but
also the chance for rest and
relaxation. While the Americans
would fly the Kiwi contingent to
Tokyo, Forbes would sometimes
push on to other destinations
including the post-atomic bomb
Hiroshima.
Later it was quite a trip home
from his period of service. He’d
sailed from Pusan to Brisbane,
where he and other troops
marched and were cheered by
the crowds, on to Kingsford
Smith Airport, Sydney, and New
Zealand. On his arrival back
in Christchurch his mum was
there. He was also greeted by
Government representatives at
the King Edward Barracks in the
city.
He is matter of fact when
relating how his mother coped
with men going to war. Forbes’
maternal grandfather, Thomas
Phillips Lloyd, had fought in the
Second Anglo-Afghan War of
1878-1880. Forbes’ father was
one of the 20 survivors within a
100-strong company caught at
Passchendaele in World War 1.
Forbes is very proud of his
siblings. One older brother Lloyd
served in “Sunderland flying
boats” safeguarding convoys in
World War 2, but then died at 23,
after his return to New Zealand,
in a motorcycle accident near
Ashburton.
His other brother Ross
was involved Nasa’s space
programme. He was the first
geochemist to get his hands
on the samples of moon rock,
Korean War Memorial unveiling in 2005.
picked up by Neil Armstrong
and Buzz Aldrin, and brought
back to Earth by Apollo 11.
Forbes has kept up with the
Korean political standoff, and
has been part of Christchurchbased
recognition of progress
between the two sides. He and
family members including his
wife have revisited South Korea
many times.
In April 2018, North Korea
and South Korea agreed to talks
to end the ongoing 65-year
conflict.
Robertson opens up
– and says goodbye
VICTORY: Scott Robertson and Richie Mo’unga celebrate
after the Crusaders beat the Chiefs to win the Super Rugby
Pacific title in Hamilton.
A DEPARTING Scott Robertson
has opened up on his career
as Crusaders coach in his final
interview before taking on the
All Blacks role in November.
The Sumner local won seven
Super Rugby titles as coach
and four as a player. He takes
over from Ian Foster as All
Blacks coach after the Rugby
World Cup. In a video posted
by the Crusaders, an emotional
Robertson looks back on his
time with the franchise and how
much it has meant to him.
“To give back to a jersey that
has given me so much . . . it’s
special that I can walk away and
go ‘thanks for everything, I’m
a better man for it. And thank
you’,” he said in the video.
Robertson also got emotional
while reflecting on his final game
in Christchurch – the 52-15 semifinal
thrashing of the Blues. He
admitted being nervous about
the potential of ending his stint
with a semi-final defeat and went
onto the ground and revved up
the home crowd before the game.
“Probably that moment was
my last time at Orangetheory, at
the home ground . . . I just felt we
needed it. I just thought it was
going to be a special moment. A
chance to bring us all together.
It was a chance to get our people
on our feet but also a thank
you from me. To say ‘let’s enjoy
this – this is our moment. Stay
here now, we’re on’. And the
performance probably reflected
that,” he says.
“I was pretty nervous too. I
thought we needed the crowd
that night. It was the end of a
career, if you end on a semifinal
at home, at a place you’ve never
lost in a final ... I thought we’re
all in. It was a pretty special
moment.”
Last week Robertson penned a
goodbye letter to Crusaders fans.
He also thanked the players
and their families for
their support and respect –
and for keeping him
accountable.
Robertson says so much of who
he and his family are – and who
he aspires to be – is linked to red
and black.
“This week was my last at
Rugby Park and boy does it feel
strange to say that,” Robertson
said in the message shared by the
Crusaders.
“My time as a Crusaders head
coach is over and my focus has
shifted to my ever-supportive
family and my own development
ahead of the next big challenge,”
it said.
The
YUMMI
study.
The role of cow, goat or sheep milk in
the nutrition and health of older women.
Milk provides important nutrients that help older people to maintain
muscle and bone health, and low milk intake is often associated with
poor nutrition in older adults.
We are looking for female volunteers aged 60 to 80 years to participate
in the YUMMI study, a 12-week research study investigating the health
effects of consuming different types milk – cow, goat, or sheep.
We will provide you with cow, goat or sheep milk powder to drink
twice a day for 12-weeks, or you will be asked to eat your normal diet
(control group). The time commitment for the study will be about 11
hours and you will attend five clinic visits. You will receive up to $220 in
supermarket vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs
involved with participating in this study (e.g. parking and/or travel costs).
If you are a woman aged 60 to 80 years and can drink milk, we would
love to hear from you.
Radio Avon back – for a day
• By Tony Simons
PERSONALITIES: Murray Inglis (above) and Lee Hanner
(below right) preparing for the launch in July 1973.
RADIO AVON, the station
that shook up the Christchurch
establishment and ended
government-owned 3ZB’s
dominance of the airwaves, will
return for a brief reprise on the
weekend.
More than 40 of its former
staff are back for a broadcast and
a reunion marking 50 years since
Radio Avon 1290 was launched
on August 4, 1973.
The first private radio station
in the city, it made an immediate
impact with its new mix of pop
music and on-air personalities –
in the mould of Radio Hauraki,
which had been enjoying similar
success in Auckland.
Two former Avon announcers,
Morry Shanahan and Kim
Adamson, will be fronting a
two-hour special on community
station 96.9 Plains FM from
10am on Saturday.
The programme will be
streamed around the world,
something that would never have
been possible in 1973.
At one time in its 17-year
history, Radio Avon had 55 per
cent of Christchurch people
tuning in. The journey ended
in 1990 when it merged with
another station and was later
rebranded C93FM.
Many of the original onair
team from 1973 are still
remembered today, such as
programme director Graeme
Parsonage, who was widely
credited for the station’s success.
Others include Wayne
Douglas, Mike Richardson
and perhaps the best known,
Murray “Muzza” Inglis, who
was still broadcasting on his
own suburban radio station in
Auckland until he died this year,
aged 80.
In a famous stunt in 1977
Inglis threw a tantrum on air,
apparently in an argument with
management over his contract
renewal. He locked himself
in the studio and continued
to broadcast by himself for 48
hours.
At the time, very few station
staff knew it was a stunt and the
story made headlines around the
world.
Shanahan, who joined the
announcing team later in 1973,
remembers some of the tricks
they employed to increase
audiences ratings.
“We used to play the records
at a higher speed to create more
pace,” he said. “Not enough that
the audience would notice, but
enough to give the station a more
lively sound – 45s were played at
48rpm and LPs at 35rpm instead
of 33.”
Another original on-air
personality was Lee Hanner,
who moved into the Lyttelton
Timeball Station with his family
when the city council was
looking for a live-in manager.
After the Timeball was badly
damaged in the February 22,
2011 earthquake, Hanner talked
about his time there and how it
fitted in perfectly with his 8pmto-midnight
shift at Radio Avon.
“I’d get home about one in the
morning and, with moonlight
over the harbour, walking up to
A Day of Fire
A Novel of Pompeii by Kate Quinn
From six bestselling authors, including New York Times
bestseller Kate Quinn, comes a vividly imagined novel following
the lives of those in ancient Pompeii on the fateful day Mount
Vesuvius erupts. Pompeii was a lively resort flourishing in the
shadow of Mount Vesuvius at the height of the Roman Empire.
When Vesuvius erupted in an explosion of flame and ash, the entire
town would be destroyed. Some of its citizens died in the chaos, some
escaped the mountain’s wrath . . . and these are their stories:
A boy loses his innocence in Pompeii’s flourishing streets. An heiress dreads
her wedding day, not knowing it will be swallowed by fire. An ex-legionary
stakes his entire future on a gladiator bout destined never to be finished. A
crippled senator welcomes death, until a tomboy on horseback comes to his
rescue. A young mother faces an impossible choice for her unborn child as
the ash falls. A priestess and a prostitute seek redemption and resurrection
as the town is buried. Six authors bring to life overlapping stories of
patricians and slaves, warriors and politicians, villains and heroes who cross
each other’s paths during Pompeii’s fiery end. But who will escape, and who
will be buried for eternity
The Trackers
by Charles Frazier
The stunning new novel from the author of international million-copy bestseller
Cold Mountain Hurtling past the downtrodden communities of Depression-era
America, painter Val Welch travels westward to the rural town of Dawes, Wyoming.
Through a stroke of luck, he’s landed a New Deal assignment to create a mural
representing the region for their new Post Office. A wealthy art lover named John
Long and his wife Eve have agreed to host Val at their sprawling ranch. Rumors and
intrigue surround the couple: Eve left behind an itinerant life riding the rails and
singing in a western swing band. Long holds shady political aspirations, but was
once a WWI sniper—and his right hand is a mysterious elder cowboy, a vestige of
the violent old west. Val quickly finds himself entranced by their lives. One day, Eve
flees home with a valuable painting in tow, and Long recruits Val to hit the road
with a mission of tracking her down. Journeying from ramshackle Hoovervilles to
San Francisco nightclubs to the swamps of Florida, Val’s search for Eve narrows,
and he soon turns up secrets that could spark formidable changes for all of them.
Feeling bloated
or have a sore stomach?
The Soothe Study is recruiting now.
We are looking for people with functional dyspepsia (indigestion) to
participate in a research study investigating the digestive health effects
of consuming mānuka honey.
Symptoms of functional dyspepsia include:
• pain or burning in the stomach, bloating, excessive belching (burping)
or nausea after meals
• an early feeling of fullness when eating
• pain in the stomach that may sometimes occur unrelated to meals or
may be relieved by eating.
After a two-week lead-in period, we will provide you with mānuka honey
or a honey-like product to eat before breakfast and dinner every day for
six-weeks. Two weeks later we will again ask you about your functional
dyspepsia symptoms.
The time commitment for this study will be about 10 hours and you will
attend six clinic visits in total. You will receive up to $220 in supermarket
vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs associated with
participating in this study (e.g., parking and/or travel costs).
If you experience symptoms of functional dyspepsia, and are aged
18 to 70 years we would love to hear from you.
National titles continue Kartstore
team’s ‘extraordinary’ three years
A team of young kart
racers have had a
season of highlights
driving for the WKS
Kartstore
MEDBURY SCHOOL pupil
Zach Tucker won the Vortex
Mini Rok for the third time in
a row this season– while Henry
Fisher, who is also at Medbury,
and Aryan Lala filled the
podium.
Cathedral Grammar School
pupil Iver Spence won the Cadet
Rok and Caleb Cross took out
the Rotax Light. Fellow team
member Jack McGrath finished
fifth in the Vortex Mini Rok.
The three national titles in key
kartsport development classes
– and the clean sweep of the
podium in VMR – have been the
highlights of the season so far for
the team at WKS Kartstore.
When you consider director
Matt Hamilton and his father
John have 30 New Zealand sprint
titles in karting between them,
their success is less of a surprise.
The team has operated in
Christchurch for four decades.
“We have had an extraordinary
last three years,” said Matt.
“Along with TC Performance,
we have won the last three Cadet
and Mini Rok NZ sprint titles.
That’s every national sprint title
in those classes since the inception
of the 950 homologated
chassis. And we have won five of
the last six VMR national sprint
titles. It is a great run.
“I love it. Our core focus is the
young guys. They are the ones
travelling and chasing championships.
I love working with
them.”
He said it was very rewarding
to see their passion grow.
“When they get in to it, often
it is just something to try with
the family, but to see it grow to
a passion and see their development
is pretty cool. And it is nice
to help with that.”
Let’s not forget those “young
kids” grow up – and the WKS
Kartstore team have continued
to nurture them.
It’s quite a list, but includes
the likes of Marcus Armstrong,
now in IndyCar; 17-year-old
Jacob Douglas, based in Indianapolis
and impressing in the
feeder class to IndyCar; teenager
Callum Hedge, who has made
a successful start to his Porsche
racing season in Australia; and
NZ Elite Academy winner James
Penrose.
The list started with father
John, who began racing karts
in the 1970s and gained success
overseas, mostly in England,
before returning to start the
business in 1981. He drove 100cc
classes in NZ and England.
“He started racing in his mid-
20s – everything was done later
in life. It was not professional
then – just racing for the passion
and the folly,” said Matt.
Matt and sister Fiona grew up
in motorsport and both raced.
Matt raced the 2001 Rotax World
Finals in Malaysia, where he met
a racing team from Bahrain, who
invited him to join them 24-hour
kart racing in Asia.
“Ï was meant to go back to
New Zealand for uni, but instead
I went straight to Oman, and
travelled regularly to the Middle
East, Asia, and Europe, which
was quite exciting. There were
no race car tracks in the Middle
East so karting and rally were
the focus. It was quite big and
attracted big sponsors and
backers,” Matt said.
The team was backed by the
Crown Prince of Bahrain, and
with their help, Matt’s intention
was to compete in Formula
Renault in the UK. When that
programme wound down,
Matt returned home to race
successfully for the Karcher
team in the Toyota Racing series,
winning the Lady Wigram
Trophy, and eventually moving
to Auckland to work for the
sponsor. There, he met Ron
Dixon who helped him into Indy
Lights in the USA.
“The Indy Light experience
was amazing. It was a huge step
up and a culture shock. It was
more ovals than road courses.
This was a completely new
experience for me, unlike the
guys I was racing against, some
of which had been racing on
ovals since they could first drive
a go-kart.
“You go to the fairgrounds
on a Sunday mornings and kids
are racing staggered go karts
on circle tracks, that was the
American culture. The cars were
big powerful V8s and it was a
steep learning curve.
“We were a one-car team
with a very limited budget, and
while it could not last, it was an
unforgettable and rewarding
experience.”
Matt returned home, and
after a stint with Team Kiwi
in Australia racing V8s, he
joined his father in the business
in Christchurch, developing
the burgeoning karting
operation, supplying karts and
parts, building engines, and
establishing the race team.
Racing has now taken a back
seat to help the youngsters,
but you’ll still see Matt in a
race car where he can – in
2022, he became the only
racer in NZ history to add
The Wigram Cup to his Lady
Wigram Trophy. Over the last
decade Matt has been joined
by Tiffany, three-time British
Kart Champion and arguably
the best female karter to grace
the sport in Europe. TC Performance
was launched, which
has greatly complimented the
WKS operation, providing oneon-one
coaching and advanced
high-performance tuition in and
out of the kart, and race-craft
guidance.
“There has always been
a huge amount of talent
running through here. While
Tiff and I are at races with the
race team, then Dad is at home
looking after the business and
building engines. It is working
well.” The reward is to see the
development of the young
drivers – in and out of the kart.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
Seaman’s tragic end aboard
Captain Scott’s Discovery
ON DECEMBER 21, 1901, the
Discovery, commanded by
Captain Robert Falcon Scott,
departed Whakaraupō Lyttelton
Harbour on the 1901-04
National Antarctic Expedition.
Discovery was accompanied
by the steam tug Lyttelton to the
heads and by HMS Ringarooma
as far as Port Chalmers in
Ōtākou Otago Harbour.
Discovery was the first British
ship built specifically for a
scientific expedition, and for
Scott’s proposed attempt on the
South Pole. The three-masted
wooden barque with a length of
52.1m and weighing 485 tonnes,
she was constructed in 1901 by
Dundee Shipbuilders Company
in Scotland, with a solid hull and
iron clad bows intended to cope
with the immense pressures of
the Antarctic ice-fields.
After her journey from
England and on her arrival
at Ōhinehou Lyttelton, which
would be her base port for the
southern expedition, Discovery
entered dry dock. The evidently
less than seaworthy condition
of the rigging, deck and hold
(which had filled with nearly 2m
of seawater on the journey to
Aotearoa New Zealand) required
urgent attention. Crew from the
HMS Ringarooma, a Royal Navy
Pearl class cruiser and member
of the Auxiliary Squadron of
the Australia Station, were
seconded to the Discovery to get
her shipshape and ready for the
coming rigours. Note that the
photograph of the “Discovery”
in dry dock is from her return
in 1904, after nearly two years
frozen in the ice at McMurdo
Sound.
December 21, the day of
departure, was marked by
huge fanfare, with a large
crowd on the wharves and
many cheering enthusiasts
aboard steamers escorting the
vessel to the harbour mouth.
Once outside the heads HMS
Ringarooma, and accompanying
Royal Navy warship HMS
Lizard prepared for a hearty
naval acknowledgement as the
Discovery passed between them.
A sobering message relayed
from Captain Scott stopped such
celebratory actions: “Please do
not cheer; a man has been killed
by falling from aloft.”
London-born seaman Charles
Bonner, 23, had joined Discovery
in Cape Town. Purportedly a
skilled seaman and popular
among the crew, his outgoing
nature found him atop the
mainmast that day, a great
position from which to wave to
the excited well-wishers. Official
reports indicate a supporting
spindle may have given way
causing his fall, while anecdotal
ones cited he was compromised
from imbibing some celebratory
liquor, as he was seen waving a
bottle on his perch. Either way,
as the ship entered the swell
of the open ocean he lost his
footing and fell 36.5m to the
deck, hitting his head on an iron
reel, which killed him instantly.
Poignantly, the tiny figure
of Bonner is just visible in the
crow’s nest in the image to the
left of Discovery departing the
harbour, with tug Lyttelton to its
left and HMS Ringarooma to its
right. The photograph was taken
just minutes before his death.
The tragic loss of the young
seaman affected the crew
deeply, especially his noncommissioned
fellows, and
created a melancholy mood for
the two-day journey to Port
Chalmers. Flags flew at half-mast
and Bonner’s body, wrapped in
canvas and the British ensign
as per naval custom, was laid
out atop a table on deck. Upon
arrival in Port Chalmers, his
body was transferred to a coffin
and gun carriage. Attended
by crew of both the Discovery
and Ringarooma, and with due
naval and civic ceremony, he was
interred in the Port Chalmers’
cemetery.
Before departing Port
Chalmers for the polar regions,
Scott funded the later erection of
a suitable memorial – a 3m high
marble obelisk on a bluestone
base, inscribed with the words:
“In memory of Charles Bonner,
A.B., of the Antarctic exploring
vessel ‘Discovery’, who died
21st December, 1901. Aged 23.
Erected by the captain, officers,
scientific staff, and crew of the
‘Discovery’.”
Bonner’s death necessitated
his replacement in the crew;
Scott chose a strong and skilled
Irish seaman by the name of
Thomas Crean, who would go
on to play significant roles in
both Scott’s ill-fated 1910 voyage
aboard the Terra Nova and
Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-
Antarctic Expedition aboard the
Endurance, which resulted in
one of the most epic Antarctic
survival journey’s of all time.
Moving with the times reaps success
IT SEEMS such a long time
ago now, but Trevor Crowe
Motors/CroweSport was once
Christchurch’s Skoda dealership.
I had a short chat with Crowe
recently, and was reminded of
the pioneering development he
carried out with some Skoda
models – turbocharging the 120L
for road use and stuffing a big V8
into another as a rally car.
Times have changed, and
during the early 90s there was a
complete change of direction for
Skoda – Czechoslovakia
split into the Czech Republic
and Slovenia, and Volkswagen
began a partnership with Skoda
–eventually buying into the
brand.
In the years since Crowe
relinquished Skoda in favour
of Subaru, Skoda is now sold in
Christchurch through the Miles
Group, and it’s fair to say Skoda
is now a force to be reckoned
with in the global car market. Its
platforms, engines, components
and designs have much in
common with Volkswagen
product and that has to be a good
thing, development costs are
lower and build quality is high.
Today, Skoda is very much on
a roll, there is a wealth of models,
the brand is marketed buoyantly
PRICE-FRIENDLY: An efficient engine means there is no
clean car programme penalty.
SKODA KAROQ STYLE: The popular sport utility vehicle gets about its business with urgency.
in New Zealand, and at dealer
level there is a lot of passion for
the product.
This evaluation focuses on the
Karoq, a mid-size sport utility
vehicle that has just undergone a
major facelift for 2023. There is
a new grille, new headlights and
cosmetic enhancements both
inside and out.
The Karoq is popular here and,
as a consequence, it is available
with plenty of choice, there are
three price-friendly variants –
Ambition at $45,990, Style at
$51,990 and Sportline at $63,990.
The evaluation car was the midspec
Style, whereas the Sportline
adds a 2-litre engine and fourwheel-drive;
the two entry-level
modelsare front wheel-drive only
and have a 1.4-litre turbocharged
four-cylinder petrol engine.
The latter is much the
European standard with strong
mid-range torque (250Nm from
1500rpm to 3500rpm), and a
low point of peak power (110kW
at 5000rpm). Together, these
figures combine to produce
strong acceleration and worthy
maximum speed. Skoda claims
a 9.2sec standstill to 100km/h
acceleration time and a top end
of 201km/h.
Figures aside, it is in the dayto-day
commute that you really
appreciate the quality of this
engine, it gets about its business
with urgency, yet is unflustered
and quiet. It responds with
vibrancy and is instant in its
delivery, a lot of that is to do with
the quick shifting eight-speed
automatic and clever matching
between the engine and
transmission ratios.
I took the test car on a twisty
high country challenge, it reacts
positively to steering input and
has solid body balance. Grip in
the first instance is supplied by
Michelin tyres (215/50 x 18in),
while they aren’t a performance
tyre, they do have high grip
qualities and contribute to a high
degree of handling control.
The Karoq is also an adept
highway cruiser, it is whisper
quiet at speed, and provides all
occupants with a comfortable
ride. The suspension is a fully
independent front-strut/rear
multiple link system which has
spring and damper rates only
moderately firmed. The result
is a well-cushioned ride, and
one which isn’t affected by body
movement in a corner.
While the Karoq can be seen as
a purposeful all-rounder, one of
its greatest claims to fame is that
• Price – Skoda Karoq Style,
$51,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4390mm; width,
2025mm; height, 1603mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1395cc, 110kW,
250Nm, eight-speed
automatic.
• Performance – 0-100km/
h, 9.2sec
• Fuel usage – 7.2l/100km
of its fuel consumption, or should
I say, lack of consumption. That’s
the beauty of European engines,
those that come out of the VW
group’s factories are high on
efficiency and low on emissions.
The end result is a 7.2-litre
per 100km combined cycle
average fuel usage claim.
The consumption readout
reinforced that during my time
in the test car. It was constantly
showing around 7.8l/100km
with an instantaneous figure of
4.8l/100km at the legal limit, the
engine turning over leisurely at
just 1700rpm.
The Karoq is no pretender in
the SUV market, it shares all of
the ingredients that make family
wagons the popular choice today.
For its price it comes with a
healthy trim level, major features
include push-button ignition,
cruise control, electric tailgate,
paddle gear shifters and touch
screen display, and a multitude
of safety systems that count
towards a five-star Euro NCAP
rating.
I’d be happy with just the midspec
Karoq, or even the entrylevel
model, the cloth seats are
certainly the way to go as far as
I’m concerned, they just feel right
to be in. What I also like about
the Karoq is its practicality. It is a
compact car at just 4.4m,
but it has good space inside
and useful load space. Bear in
mind as well, there are many
little features that make Skoda
stand out as a car maker, they
don’t stand out at first, but once
familiar with the car you’ll
appreciate them.
For all of its clever kit and
efficient technology, the Karoq
doesn’t qualify for a New
Zealand Government clean car
discount. But the good news is
that it won’t cost you a penalty,
both engines and all models
are fee neutral. I’m also reliably
informed that there is a healthy
supply of all Skoda models.
