Water quality improvements
By JOHN COSGROVE
The firstconcretepour for the new
Hurunui1Rural Water Supply’s one
millionlitre reservoir,took place
earlierthis week.
HurunuiDistrict Councilproject
managerPaul Thorntonsays the new
reservoir,which is costing about $3.1
million, is part of the long awaited
upgradeofthe Hurunui1drinking
water supply scheme.
He sayswhen finished in 2024 it will
take care of all the boil water notices
residents received every time the
HurunuiRiver rises duringmajor
rainfall events.
‘‘They have been planning for this
improvement for many years now, and it
will be good when it’s up and running.’’
The scheme intake is from agallery
on the Hurunui River,just downstream
from the SH1 bridge.
From there water is pumpedtoa
reservoir,and then through anetwork
of pumps and reservoirs it is
distributed around Motunau, Scargill
and Greta Valley.
‘‘Normally the Hurunui River has
very clearwater in it.
‘‘We draw fromitthrough agallery in
the river, and in the filtrationunit
onsite,it’s UV treatedand filtered.
Then it’s chlorinatedbefore
distributing it acrossone of the largest
areas of the Hurunui District.
Mr Thornton says when river levels
rose due to highrainfalls upstream, the
residents there havehad to copewith
boil waternotices becausethe system
wasn’t good at handling the increased
flows and dirty water.
‘‘When we finish here it will be one of
the most complex drinking water plants
we have had in the Hurunuiand it will
Art exhibition in Rga church hall
By SHELLEY TOPP
Rangiora's St John's Anglican Church
craft group is holdinganart exhibition
fundraiser to support the plight of
peopleinTanzania and Fiji.
The group held asuccessful ‘‘Art for
Ukraine’’ exhibition,and silentauction
fundraiser last year, and this year they
have joined forces with friends to
support ‘‘Africans withoutaccess to
food and cycloneproofhousing for
Fiji’’.
One of the organisers, KathyBoyland,
says people wantingtosupport the
exhibition by donating theirwork can
drop it off at the smallbuilding on the
High Street side of the St Johns
Anglican Church.
The artwork willbeondisplay in the
three rooms in the church’s hall
complex.
There willnot be an officialopening
for the exhibition. However, the church
will be holding ahigh tea thisSaturday,
July 22, to welcome the public to the
exhibitionand it is hopedmost of the
adult contributions will be displayed by
then.
The organisers are alsohoping
children will donatework for the
exhibition, and their contributionswill
be accepted up until August 5with the
exhibitionclosing on August12.
‘‘The highlysuccessful Kaiapoi Art
Expo has just finished and young
people haveworked hard to exhibit in
this, Kathy says.
‘‘We have approachedschools and
homeschoolfamilies to ask whether
some of their children and young
people would donatetheir artwork for
sale at our exhibition.’’
Kathy says the organisers are hoping
the exhibitionwill provide visitors with
‘‘food for thought’’ about the plight of
others as they circulate around the art
works.
‘‘Climateissues and the Ukraine war
are creating aglobal food crisis hitting
the poorestthe worst,’’ she says.
‘‘Wehave aclose connectionwith an
areaofTanzania as one of our church
members lived there for many years
and is returning there withtwo others
in August.
‘‘When we heard thattheir last
growing season was devastated, first by
drought, then by floods, and that some
people had died of hunger we wanted to
do something to help, she says. ‘‘The
timing of the support is crucial as extra
foodisonly available to buy duringJuly
and August so we planned the
exhibition to get the money to them
whenthey need it.’’
The new Totalspan garage
and keep the vehiclescleaner.
It will also have an
administration office.
‘‘It is the biggest project ever
undertaken by the Trust,’’ says
its chair, Don Fairbrother.
‘‘We did receive building
consent last November, but are
stillawaiting resource consent
–amuch more involved
HoweverCraig Sargison, who
previouslyworkedfor the
is now retired,joined the Trust
team last year and has helped
with the consentprocess.
The Trust in its Business
the building to start in the
this year at an estimated cost of
$150,000.
‘‘However, due to the delays
our projected costshave
final estimates still to come, Mr
Fairbrothersays.
‘‘Without the knowledge and
‘‘An excellent effort, which
makes us feel very humble
when we realise the esteem
with which these philanthropic
The Trust is alsoplanning to
extendthe services they
Several meetings have been
held with Citizens Advice
Trust to try and establish a
service transporting patients to
Dear Editor,
Inoted the letter (NC News, July 20), regarding the zone
committee.
The Hurunui District Council stepped away from this
zone committee in late 2020, and following that began
some early discussion to develop areplacement forum.
Our early preparations considered aLand and Water
committee, however these plans have taken abackstep
with the heavy workload of government reform, and of
course it fell during the restrictions of the Covid19
pandemic.
We have kept regular liaison with Environment
Canterbury (ECan) which reports to our full council, and
are now looking towards further developing the Land and
Water committee proposal in collaboration with ECan and
the Runanga.
This promises to be apositive step forward, and will be
further developed in the not too distant future.
Yours,
Hurunui Mayor,
Marie Black.
Road signs
Dear Editor,
Iwas interested to read the recent article by David Hill
(NC News 20 July) about the wording on our road signs.
Ihave noticed, like everyone else, the change to
including Maori names in most settings.
Government departments, towns, public facilities are
all now being labelled with both English and Maori words.
While Ithink this is agood thing overall, it does feel like
we are being bombarded at the moment with new words to
learn and recognise.
Iknow some basic Maori language and can pronounce
most of these, but Iknow that alot of older people, and
also those who don't read English well, really struggle.
If the accompanying English is present we can perhaps
make some connection and eventually remember the
Maori equivalent.
Iwonder if this will be so if every road sign is bilingual.
Driving takes such concentration and it's easy to miss
information on the first pass by. Iamperhaps touching on
amuch wider issue here but Ifeel Irepresent agood
portion of the community in expressing this concern.
Yours,
Trish Warnes.
‘‘We allknow that there are awide
that reflect the unique needs of
‘‘That is why it’sahuge step in the
Comcol North Canterbury celebrates 40 yrs
By SHELLEY TOPP
Comcol North Canterbury has marked
40 years of ‘‘creating better lives for our
community’’ at aspecial anniversary
event at the Rangiora college.
The celebration was held in the
college’s cafeteria recently with staff
and supporters attending and the
college’s first tutor, Dirk Zant, aspecial
guest.
The location of the event marked the
college’s humble starting point, in the
back of an old bike shed on land
opposite the Rangiora High School.
The college’s journey began in July
1983 after businessmen Tony Hall and
Alex Murray recognised a‘‘looming
crisis of high national unemployment’’
and wanted to do something locally to
mitigate the difficulties they believed
school leavers would face in North
Canterbury.
Tony says he was enormously proud of
establishing the college and what had
been achieved there.
‘‘It is all about people and whether
you sit inside and become an observer,
or do you want to become involved and
try and make adifference in people’s
lives.
‘‘We just decided we wanted to try and
make adifference,’’ he says.
Tony and Alex established the
Rangiora Enterprise Trust in
association with the Rangiora Borough
Council and based their new
educational organisation on the Scottish
Enterprise Trust to begin providing
training courses in horticulture and
beekeeping.
The new organisation met with
immediate success, attracting
Government funding for the training
programmes after which the Rangiora
Training Institute was formed in
collaboration with Rangiora High
Busy night ... Comcol North Canterbury students Daisy Jones, left, from North Loburn, and Molly Paterson from Woodend, serving food
at afunction held in Rangiora’s Comcol North Canterbury college cafeteria to celebrate the 40 year anniversary of Community Colleges
New Zealand’s journey which began in Rangiora.
School and the community.
The initial organisation has seen
many changes, and now has five
colleges, including Rangiora,
Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin and
Invercargill, under the Comcol New
Zealand banner.
However, the core ‘goal of
empowering people to gain work skills
and qualifications in handson learning
environments’’ remains the same,
Comcol North Canterbury’s project
support manager Cathy Batchelor says.
‘‘Our dedicated Comcol team of youth
coaches and support staff touch the lives
of close to 1000 young people and their
whānau each year, she says.
‘‘They work actively and intensively to
identify an individual's goals and the
best path to reach them.’’ Cathy says
guiding young people with tailored
support and practical tools such as
budgeting and parenting courses,
driverlicence training, and supporting
options for education, workbased
training and employment, is impactful.
‘‘Changing lives from adependence
trajectory to empowerment has many
positive effects for our communities.
Our mahi can be both challenging and
rewarding but we are here to change
lives for people, whānau and
community, for the better,’’ she says.
CONCRETE POUR FOR RESERVOIR AT HURUNUI 1SCHEME
Hurunui 1Rural Water Supply -The first concrete pour for the new 1million litre reservoir took place today.
This pour involved approximately 51 cubic meters of concrete delivered and pumped into place. This will then
be levelled and power floated to complete the job. Typically, one cubic metre ofconcrete weighs 2.5 tonne,
meaning this pour weighed in at approximately 127 tonne.
As Hurunui's biggest water scheme, this work torelocate the infrastructure to another part ofthe Hurunui
River with less risk ofturbidity during high river levels, was budgeted into the Council's Long Term Plan.
The Hurunui District is home to 26 playgrounds, 2swimming pools (Amberley and Rotherham), 14 halls, 14
recreation reserves developed for sporting and passive relaxation, 18 reserves undeveloped but available for
passive relaxation, 7plantation or forestry reserves, Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools Reserve, Queen Mary
Hospital Historic Reserve, and other reserve areas currently leased. Access to greenspaces has avery positive
effect on community wellbeing.
Making abig difference
The recent annual Charles
Upham Big Splash raised
$12,740.
Business relationship manager
and events organiser Karen
Dugdale says Rangiora
Promotions were absolutely
delighted to hand over a‘cheque’
for $6138.69 to the Rangiora
Stroke Club.
The funds raised by the
Charles Upham Big Splash 2023
Ryman Healthcare were split
50/50 with Rangiora Promotions.
Karen says the money will
make such an incredible
difference to the Rangiora
Stroke Club (RSC) who was
delighted to accept the ‘cheque’.
The RSC will be using its share
of the funds to help with the
rehabilitation of stroke victims.
‘‘They will be continuing to
focus their work not only
rehabilitation, but to also bring
people together to aid in the
support and rehabilitation of
stroke victims, and to help
increase the role families play
with victims continued care.’’
She says the cheque
presentations were agood
opportunity to extend amassive
thank you to Tracy Blackadder
and the team at Charles Upham
Retirement Village for hosting an
afternoon tea.
‘‘For us all, we can’t wait for
the 2024 Charles Upham Big
Splash.’’ Rangiora Promotions
share of the funds raised will be
used to assist in the running of
their next three big community
projects being held later this
year. On November 4, the
Treetech's Outdoor Cinema and
Fireworks Spectacular, the
Rangiora Toyota Santa Parade
on December 10, and the
McAlpines Mitre 10 Mega
Art-loving friends
hold exhibition
By SHELLEY TOPP
Agroup of artloving
friends have collaborated
to bring aretrospective
exhibition of artwork by the
late Norman Scott to
Rangiora.
None of the paintings,
which are owned by
Waimakariri Community
Arts Council chairwoman,
Miranda Hales, of
Fernside, Virginia and
Harry Pawsey, of
Hawarden, Linda and Ross
MacMillan, of Pegasus, and
Dinah Stokes, of
Christchurch, are for sale.
The artist once did a
bicycle tour of the South
Island and the friends
thought it would be
interesting to acknowledge
that Te Waipounamu
connection with an
exhibition of their Norman
Scott paintings in this part
of New Zealand.
‘‘This is avery unique
exhibition,’’ Miranda said.
‘‘Norman's work is avery
good example of middle
20th century New Zealand
art. You can definitely see
the influence of Colin
McCahon in his work. That
is what makes it so
interesting.’’
Norman was born
Gisborne in 1913, and died
on 1978. He served in the
Royal Air Force in World
War II but his plane was
shot down early in the war
and he ended up in various
prisoner of war camps
during the next four years.
While he was aprisoner
of war Norman kept his
dreams of becoming afulltime
artist alive by using
Red Cross supplies to
continue doing his artwork.
After the war he attended
the Slade School of Art in
London and graduated with
aDiploma in Fine Arts
before returning home in
1948 to Gisborne where he
become afulltime artist for
the rest of his life.
Although his work
remained relatively
unknown during the early
part of his career, he
achieved more acclaim
during the latter part of last
century.
He is remembered
mainly for his oil paintings,
but he was also atalented
water colourist and
sculptor.
The Norman Scott
Retrospective exhibition
opened at the Rangiora
Library’s Chamber Gallery
on July 23 and closes on
Fit-for-purpose
fire station
Kaikoura now has anew, $7.04 million, fitforpurpose
fire station.
It was officially opened last weekend by the
Minister of Internal Affairs, BarbaraEdmonds.
The Kaikōura Volunteer Fire brigade and
community were joined byFire and Emergency
service representatives, local iwi, and
stakeholders, including Kaikōura Mayor Craig
Mackle, and past members of the brigade to
celebrate its opening.
In 2016, the Kaikōura district suffered a
significant earthquake which left its fire station
badly damaged.
It was also deemed too close to the shore also,
which meant it was vulnerable to atsunami.
Construction on the new facilitybegan in 2021,
and part of the funding needed to build the new
station has come fromthe COVID19 Response and
Recovery Fund.
The new station, which sits well out of the
tsunami zone, boasts three appliance bays along
with decontamination, breathing apparatus filling
facilities, operations and training rooms, and
offices.
There is also aresource garage housing
additional appliances and atanker.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s District
Commander, Canterbury, Dave Stackhousesays
the new station will provide an essential hub for
emergency services and the community.
‘‘Due to the location of Kaikōura, it poses
several challenges for emergency services which
the Kaikōura earthquake highlighted.
‘‘This new stateoftheart station is asafe
facility for the Kaikōura VolunteerFireBrigade to
Vegetation and Wind Storm FAQs
After recent weather events around the country we wanted
to remind our network of the importance of vegetation
management. It is also agood opportunity to reiterate general
house rules regarding storms, severe weather and minimising
damage.
Why amI(the vegetation owner)
responsible for myvegetation
impacting lines in aweather event?
Maintenance and ensuring that vegetation doesn’t damage
MainPower lines/network is the responsibility of the owner.
If a tree, hedge or shelter belt is not maintained as per the
requirements or regulations, it can cause serious issues ifit
comes in contact with lines, such as;
• During severe weather events, if vegetation is too close to
linesitcan becomeelectrically ‘live’. Anyone who comes into
contact withelectrically‘live’vegetation may be electrocuted.
• In severe or even bad weather, vegetation can topple over
and branches may break away causing damage to power
lines. Damage to the network/lines can cause significant
widespread power outages.
• Vegetation too close to lines may cause electrical sparking,
resulting in fire and potentially causing significant damage
to the lines/network.
• Vegetation roots can grow around underground electricity
cables, if this happens it can rupture the insulation and cause
widespread power outages.
Am Iliable if asevere weather event
occurs and abelonging of mine
damages the lines/network?
If your belongings (e.g, atrampoline) is picked up in asevere
weather event, and damages part of our lines/network,
any damage created could result in the owner (you) being
responsible for the costs associated with any repairs needed to
fix the network.
To prevent these types of instances from occurring, we suggest
ensuring items are secured correctly to your property in case of
extreme weather events. The list includes but is not limited to:
• Trampolines and outdoor playsets (wendy houses, swing
sets etc).
• Bins and recycling boxes
• Boats, caravans, and bikes
• Outdoor furniture and garden sheds
• Garden ornaments and potted plants
• Hardware, tools, and building materials/accessories
• Firewood and branches
• Gas tanks, fuel drums etc.
What is a‘Fall Zone’?
The ‘Fall Zone’ iswhere vegetation branches are outside of both
the‘Notice Zone’and ‘GrowthZone’limits, however due to their
size and position with respecttothe line/network, they presenta
risk of damage. (To learn more about these zones, check out the
MainPower website!)
If vegetation on your property is located within a fall zone,
consider trimming or removing the vegetation (via qualified
contractors).
This is suggested to avoid causing damage to the lines/network
and incurring future costs associated with any damage the
vegetation may cause.
Vintage truck has close family connection
By JOHN COSGROVE
When Louise Kidd started researching
her family tree, she wasn’t expecting to
discover an old truckshe drives past
regularly would haveastrong family
connection.
She discovered an old Bedfordtruck
in Kaiapoi that her grandfather, George
Gough Kidd, used to operate for many
years, moving vegetables to market in
Christchurch fromthe family market
gardens.
The vintage Bedfordtruck is now
used as apromotional vehicleoutside
the Kaikanui Tavern on Williams
Street.
While researching her family tree,
and finding the photo of the truck taken
in 1954, she alsodiscovered she has 460
new relatives.
‘‘It’s got granddad's name on the side
and Irecognised it as the one parked
outsidethe tavern.
‘‘My auntsand uncles who still live in
Kaiapoihave told me about the truck
and our connection with it.
‘‘Granddad solditatauction in 1971
when he retiredfrom the business.’’
She says it is nice to see apieceofher
family history everytime she goes
throughKaiapoi.
Louise's familywere multigenerational
market gardeners in the
Marshlandsarea from the 1880s.
‘‘I remember being told granddad
used to sell peas on the roadside until
midnight on Christmas Eve everyyear,’’
says Louise.
‘‘Granddad started using the truck
back in 1952, after yearsofhauling
producetothe marketswith ahorse
and cart.’’
But sincethe Bedford truck has been
sittinginthe tavern's car park,Louise
says it is ashame to see it in such apoor
state.
‘‘It’s beentagged,windowssmashed
and it should be in amuseum.’’
KaikanuiTavern owner Julian Eagle
says he inheritedthe old truck when he
bought the business from its previous
owner, Trevor Inwood.
‘‘It came with the chattels and Ididn’t
know what to do with it, so Ileft it
there.’’
He knew Trevor, an avid truck
collector, had bought it to use it as a
promotional feature for the tavern.
‘‘Over the yearsafew collectors have
wanted to buy it, but Iturnedthem
down.
‘‘Now, withthe state it is in, Imight be
tempted,’’hesays.
Mr Eagle says it is ‘‘justterrible’’
what somepeople have done to the old
truckrecently.
‘‘Every so often, someone gets it into
theirmind to damageit.
Recently someone liftedaheavy
grateoff the street and threw it into the
truck’s windscreen.
‘‘It has been tagged many times, the
windows smashed, and had its tires
slashed’’.
Trevor Inwood, says he was only the
thirdowner of the truck.
Trevor, awellknown transport
industry identity in Canterbury, bought
the truck in 2012 or 2013.
He had spotted it in abarn on a
property in Fernside and bought it as a
promotional tool for the tavern.
He remembers beingtold it had been
used as afarm truck from new in 1952 or
1953 and then later as agraveltruck
before ending up in abarn.
The truck isn’t the only publicitem
connectingLouisewith her family’s
history.
Peter Wright ... Rangiora photographer bringing Godzone’s images to High Street.
Alove of photography
By SHELLEY TOPP
Rangiora photographer Peter Wright is
bringing Godzone’s images to his new
shop in Rangiora’s High Street.
His love of photography began afew
years ago when he was travelling around
the South Island for his work and started
snapping images of some of the scenic
places he was stopping off at on his
phone.
‘‘I enjoy being out on my own in this
beautiful country, it is such agreat place
with so much to explore,’’ he says.
Peter posted some of his photographs
on acouple of Facebook pages and got
positive comments.
‘‘People really loved them and Ihad a
few people asking if Isell my work, so I
decided it was time to look at buying a
DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera.
‘‘I got slightly addicted and spent a
bunch of money on getting some good
gear. It is an expensive habit,’’ he says.
He bought his first DSLR camera
about two years ago, and now uses a
Canon R5 mirrorless camera.
Before opening his Godzone
Photography shop in Rangiora Peter was
asales rep for asafety company, selling
work boots and hivis workwear, but his
love of photography was pulling him in a
new direction.
‘‘I have always said that Idon’t know
what Iwant to do when Igrow up.
‘‘ When Igot into photography Ifinally
knew,’’ he says.
‘‘Circumstances meant Ihad the
chance to take amassive leap of faith
and when Isaw the perfect shop become
available in High Street, Idecided to
take that leap. Ihadn’t even sold asingle
picture before opening the shop.
‘‘All Iknew was that Ihad finally found
what Iwanted to do and had the means
to do it, so Icrossed my fingers and quit
my job.’’
He opened the shop in April and so far
that leap of faith has delivered a
‘‘wonderful response’’ from customers.
‘‘People seem to really like the shop
and often return with apartner or friend
aday or two after coming in the first
time. Ihave never had so many
compliments in my life,’’ he says.
Photographing the night sky is a
favourite pastime.
‘‘I am always looking at the sky later in
the day to see what sort of sunset we
might get, and if it is aclear night Ilove
getting away from the lights and doing
some astrophotography. Iamabit of a
night owl, not so good with early starts,
so only have acouple sunrise photos.’’
Navigating dementia
Aworkshop designed to help people
Scanner reaches milestone
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Daniel Wheeler Livestock
has reached an impressive
milestone.
The Amberleybased
contractor pregnancy scans
ewes in the North Canterbury
area and beyond, and last
week scanned his seven
millionth ewe.
While it is ajob that has
taken him from New Zealand
to Mexico, England, Wales
and Scotland, the milestone
came at Ikamatu, on the
South Island’s West Coast.
He was scanning at
Waipuna Farm, farmed by
brothers Ken and Mark
Ferguson.
Waipuna is one of the
oldest farms on the coast,
having been in the care of the
Ferguson family since the
1860s.
Daniel began scanning in
1992, deciding to try his hand
at using the pregnancy testing
tool, after assisting with a
scanning run while on his OE.
He had not come across
scanning in New Zealand,
even while studying at
Massey University, and
decided to give it ago.
He became one of three in
New Zealand at the time to
start scanning as a
profession.
Daniel says little has
changed technologically in
the passing decades, but
scanning has become much
more efficient as the years
have passed, and much
quicker.
He recalls long days in the
early years, scanning 80 to
100 sheep an hour.
‘‘Today really experienced
scanners can put through up
to 700 an hour, with tallies up
to 5000 per day on the odd
occasion.’’
Daniel says when averaged
out, scanners are putting
through 450 to 500 ewes an
hour —scanning between
2500 to 3000 on an average
day.
He says the biggest
improvements over the years
has been in handling
equipment and on farm
conditions.
However, the scanning
probe he uses has remained
the same.
Farmers now also know the
ropes and sheep are being
presented well, making
scanning faster, and yards
are now often concreted and
have ahigh pressure hose in
the area where sheep were
presented for scanning. This
avoided mud splashing about
making the job easier and
more efficient.
This years scanning is
‘‘generally up dramatically’’
because of having good feed
available, he says.
But for afew percentages
are down abit, possibly due
to worms causing abit of an
issue, Daniel says.
Easing vets
workload
Increasing the use of veterinary
nurses and techniciansisbeing
encouraged by the VeterinaryCouncil
of New Zealand (VCNZ) to help ease
pressure as the vet shortage in New
Zealand continues.
VCNZ chief executive and registrar
Iain McLachlan says,spreading the
workloadamongvariousmembers of
veterinary teams,within their scope of
practice,isessential in responding to
the shortage.
He says this may mean when an
appointment is made for aminor
routine procedure, animalsmay be
seen by someone other thantheir
usualvet.
Allied Veterinary Professionals
(AVPs), which includeveterinary
nurses, technicians, and technologists,
are trained professionals working in
clinics alongside veterinarians.
‘‘In any case where an animal
requires specialised care and
treatment, veterinarians will still be
the first port of call.
‘‘Very much likehuman health,
whereyou mightsee aGPpractice
veterinary clinics,’’ Iain says.
AVPs have their own set of
standards, ethicsand guidelines, so
are trusted specialists in their fields.
VCNZ wants to empower veterinary
Preparing for agood harvest
By JOHN COSGROVE
With over90producersofwine in North
Canterbury ranging from growers to
wineries and those who do both, the work
never stops just because the vines are
dormantatthis time of year.
Mike Saunders of the 50 hectare
Greystone and Muddy Waters wineries in
the WaiparaValley, says the team are
hard at worklookingaftertwo important
aspectsoftheir vineyardswinter
maintenance programme.
‘‘We haveteams workingonboth
machinery and vine maintenance.’’
He says they, like many others, are in
the middle of pruning whichistheir
biggestwinter task,
‘‘We are setting up the vines for the
next season, then outside of that, every
week we are also undertakingmachinery
or tractor maintenance projects.’’
He says with all the pruning, their
mulchesdoquite abit of workatthis
into the ground, returning thatcarbon
back into the soil.
‘‘We are alsospending quiteabit of
time on our fungicide units, gettingour
sprayers ready for the up coming season.
‘‘Thereisalwayssome gear to maintain
and lookafter and thenthere is the
vineyards infrastructure to lookafter as
The Klima cane pruner is aspecialised
He says he has many painful memories
‘‘We will keep monitoringour soil
we are also on ajourney of watering for
longer but far lessfrequently, to try and
get our vines roots to go down deeper and
to make our vinesmore resilient, with
the aim of effectivelybeing dry farmed at
He saysthe Muddy Waters winery is 95
That winning feeling ... GlenmarkCheviot celebrates winning the Luisetti Seeds North Canterbury senior rugby championship.
Glenmark-Cheviot takes out grand final
RUGBY
By LINDSAY KERR
GlenmarkCheviothad to withstand a
spirited second half performancefrom
Kaiapoi before emerging 3019 winners
in the grandfinalofthe Luisetti Seeds
North Canterburysenior rugby
championship played at the Kaiapoi
ground last Saturday.
Glenmark’s win,its 37th sincethe
competition’s inception in 1905, came
on the back of Kaiapoi’s backtoback
victoriesin2021 and 2022.
The spoils of victory also includedthe
presentationofthe Hunnibell Trophy.
The scenefor the gamewas thankfully
atransformation from the atrocious
conditions the players and officials
facedinprevious week’s semifinals.
Previousresult’s suggestedthat
GlenmarkCheviotwerehot favourites.
Although it struggled in the combined
countrycompetition, itsform in the
North Canterburycompetition
improvedeach week, arrivingatthe
grandfinal unbeaten.
Kaiapoi meanwhile, hadbeenafrontrunner
in the combined competition,
and earnedthe right to play in that
competition’s final.
This formcarried over to the North
Canterbury round, andinspite of being
beaten by GlenmarkCheviot in the
round robin, it was adeserved
opponent.
Truetoform,the combined side
dominated the opening exchanges,and
scored its firstoffourtries fromthe kick
off after aKaiapoi clearing kickmissed
touch.
Kaiapoithen attacked for aperiod
andwas closetoscoring.
The remainder of thehalf however
belonged to GlenmarkCheviot. It went
about its work in aclinical fashion and
after 15 minutes scoredatry after a
blind sideattack.
Atry to left wingerMatt Holmes
followed after asolo 25m sidelinedash.
The try wasconverted by Kyohei
Yamasawa and the leadwas out to 17 –
nil.
Before half time Yamasawaadded a
penalty andthen converted another
Holmes try,one that wasscored after a
Kaiapoi dropped pass.
Facing a027 deficit,many sides
would have crumbledsuch wasthe
pressureKaiapoifaced.
This wasnot to be, and in atypical
Kaiapoi fashion it set about acomeback
thatwould bringitinto contention.
In the space of twenty minutes it
scoredthreetries.
Likethe combined side, the first came
withinmoments of thekick off when
Kafu Misiuta scored.
By the half waymark, Kaiapoi was
playing with more confidence.
Backed by alarge homecrowd
another try followed from lockBailey
Counihanand within minutes full back,
LanceTaylor, as last receiver scored in
the corner.
With the try converted by Jacobs
Lawson, Kaiapoi wasall of asudden
withineight points of Glenmark
Cheviot.
TheKaiapoi attackcontinued and its
chances wereassisted by three lost
GlenmarkCheviot lineout throws.
With full timenearing, Glenmark
Cheviot worked backinto an attacking
position and apenalty attempt to put the
game beyond Kaiapoi was quickly
accepted.
It was arelieved GlenmarkCheviot
unit thatenjoyed hearing the full time
whistle.
Captain Andrew Hull was quick to
acknowledgethe pressure Kaiapoihad
put on his team.
‘‘Wewere in the drivers seat. It wasa
matterofmaking sure we keptour chins
recent Glenmark teamsover along
period, the captaincy roll fell to the
numbereight.
Here AndrewHull’s excellent
leadership wasdemonstrated.
Kaiapoi’s slowstart was primarily
because its opponents did not let it gain
momentum. Thefact they cameback in
the fashion theydid was no surprise.
Lance Tayloragain had ausefulgame
What’s happening in your
community…
Let's Talk About Significance and
Engagement Policy
The Council is committed to making informed
and sustainable decisions in the best interests
of communities across our District. We want to
ensure the decisions made reflect the aspirations
of tangata whenua, residents, ratepayers,
community groups and business.
To help us to make the best decisions, Council
engages with our communities every day in a
number of different ways. Sometimes, this is us
providing information, and other times we directly
seek input into our decision-making processes.
Our Significance and Engagement Policy helps us
by doing two main things:
1. It outlines for the Council and the community
how wedecide what issues, proposals, decisions,
assets and activities are significant
2. Sets out how and when communities can expect
to input into council decision-making processes.
Generally speaking, the more significant the issue,
the greater the level of consultation or engagement.
This policy seeks to provide clarity as to when the
Council will, and will not seek public participation.
What changes are we proposing?
We are proposing to add acriteria for significance
under section 5.4 of the proposed policy.
This introduces anew criteria for assessing how
significant amatter is in relation to the impact it
may have onclimate change (both adaptation and
mitigation) being substantially negative.
It reads:
The impact or consequences the decision or proposal
will have onclimate change mitigation (through
greenhouse gas emissions) oradaptation (the
reduction of risk to natural hazards exacerbated by
climate change) is substantially negative. Adecision
to not act considering known climate change risks
should be treated as more significant that it would
otherwise be due to forecasted implications on the
community. For example, building new facilities
in coastal hazard areas would be considered
substantially negative.
This inclusion acknowledges the feedback we've
had from locals that they wish the Council to
show leadership byprioritising climate change,
sustainability and environmental protection. It
will also align our engagement practice with the
Council's Climate Change Policy.
This policy was last updated in 2020. At the time it
noted arequirement for afurther update in 2023
ahead of the upcoming Long Term Plan.
