lamsquad has often been 

referred to as the Vogue of 

Africa – and this is a tag that 

gives us so much pride owing 

to the great legacy of Vogue and 

how the brand continues to serve as 

a pacesetter to everything related to 

beauty, fashion, style and lifestyle. 

For us, it was a no-brainer having 

the legendary Edward Enninful on 

the cover of this month’s edition. 

This was a feature cover, and the 

cover on Edward contains a lot of 

contributions and inputs from various 

editors. However, we are not ruling out 

a possible Exclusive cover with Edward 

Enninful in the near future. Hey Edward, 

we will reach out. Please say yes! 

As we all know, Edward Enninful 

is a Ghanaian-British journalist who 

became the first man and first Black 

person to become editor-in-chief in 

2017 at British Vogue. Last month, 

we woke up to the sad news that he 

would be stepping down from the 

position. 

There are many talks as to why 

he may be stepping down from 

his position at Vogue, but for us at 

Glamsquad, the focus remains to 

celebrate the great journalist, editor 

and fashion icon – who remains to 

mean many great things to many 

people globally.

To announce his exit as the editor of 

British Vogue, New York Times had no 

better headline than – “British Vogue 

Editor Edward Enninful Out After Losing 

Power Struggle with Anna Wintour: Report.” 

It said: Edward Enninful is out as editorin-chief 

of British Vogue after he failed to 

dislodge Anna Wintour from the position 

he coveted — the head of the US-based 

edition of the influential Condé Nast fashion 

publication, according to a report. 

The 51-year-old Enninful leaves British 

Vogue after a six-year stint as its top editor. 

Vogue’s parent company said on Friday 

that Enninful, who made history as the 

first gay black man to helm the UK-based 

publication, would take up a “global 

advisory position” at the magazine “with 

the freedom to take on broader creative 

projects.” 

But The Sunday Times reported that 

Enninful always considered the job as a 

stepping stone to the title he really wanted 

but which is occupied by Wintour. 

“He felt he had all the right qualities to 

be a modern, inclusive editor who could 

present a fresh face for Vogue and global 

fashion,” a company source told The 

Sunday Times. 

But the 73-year-old Wintour wasn’t 

going anywhere — having been recently 

promoted to the position of chief content 

officer for Condé Nast, according to The 

Sunday Times. 

There were many other prominent 

publications whose reports revealed that 

perhaps there were more enemies than 

friends in Edward’s camp – or the fashion 

world, as it is. According to some critics – 

there were obviously those who felt that the

position of British Vogue’s top 

editor wasn’t for a black man. 

It appears his sexuality – as 

gay, paved the way for him in 

the industry, but his colour was 

always a factor. 

Who really 

is Edward 

Enninful? 

Edward Enninful was born in 

Ghana in February 1972 and 

when he was still a child, he 

moved to Ladbroke Grove, 

London, together with his 

family. 

One of six children, Enninful 

was brought to London as a 

child and grew up in the city’s 

Ladbroke Grove area. He 

became interested in fashion 

as a teenager when he was 

scouted as a fashion model. 

He displayed a talent for 

fashion styling which led the 

then Editor of I-D, Terry Jones, 

to appoint Enninful as the 

magazine’s fashion director, 

the youngest in the industry. 

He attended Goldsmith’s, 

University of London, well 

known for its art programmes, 

but left before graduation in 

order to plunge full-time into a 

fashion editing career. 

His Sexuality 

At the age of 21, Enninful 

told his mother he was gay, 

and was thankful for her 

reaction. Eventually, he writes, 

his father “came around” to 

the idea of him being gay. 

“I was extremely fortunate 

to have the mother I had,” 

he writes. “She loved me - I 

knew that always - and when 

I eventually told her I was gay 

at the grand old age of 21, 

having returned to London 

after a romantic epiphany on 

a New York dance floor, there 

was no question of me being 

exiled by the family,” he writes. 

But in London in the Eighties 

and Nineties, he says, others 

were not as “lucky” as he was. 

Throughout and beyond

The Rise of 

Edward 

Enninful 

At the age of 16, Enninful 

was spotted on a train by 

stylist Simon Foxton. “I was 

16 and I had no idea who 

Simon Foxton was,” he said 

in an interview for Telegraph 

Magazine. “About two weeks 

later I was stopped again, this 

time by a model scout. When 

I told her that I’d already been 

approached by Simon Foxton, 

she told me how amazing 

he was and weeks later I was 

shooting with him at his house, 

along with Nick Knight, a 

founder-photographer of i-D.” 

Enninful called his short 

modelling career as his 

“baptism into fashion”. Later 

on, he got introduced to Trish 

and Terry Jones, founder of i-D 

magazine, and soon started 

assisting i-D fashion director 

Beth Summers. He completed 

college, getting a degree 

at Goldsmiths, University of 

London, while balancing his 

modelling career and helping 

with shoots with Foxton and 

Summers. He then got a fulltime 

job there. 

In 1998, Enninful became 

an editor to Italian Vogue. 

According to him, working 

with Vogue Italia editor-inchief 

Franca Sozzani and 

photographer Steven Meisel 

helped him to develop as a 

stylist. “I always say that I was 

a London stylist but when I 

worked with Steven, I became 

a proper stylist.” 

At Italian Vogue, he created 

the “Black Issue”, which 

involved only black models,

like Naomi Campbell, Jourdan 

Dunn and Alek Wek. He called 

his intention as ending the 

“white-out that dominates the 

catwalks and magazines”. 

The issue was so popular that 

Condé Nast had to print an 

extra 40,000 copies. 

Enninful also styled the June 

2011 cover editorial, “Belle 

Vere”, which solely featured 

plus-sized models such as Tara 

Lynn, Candice Huffine, and 

Robyn Lawley. 

In 2011, Enninful was 

tapped to take the style 

directorship at W magazine. 

He brought significance to the 

magazine’s fashion editorials. 

For instance, he dressed the 

outré R&B artist Nicki Minaj as 

a French noblewoman. W’s 

editor, credited Enninful in 

part with the magazine’s 16 

percent growth in ad page in 

2012. 

Enninful was approved

as the new editor-in-chief of 

British Vogue on 10 April 2017. 

Condé Nast International 

chairman and chief executive 

Jonathan Newhouse declared 

him as the successor to 

Alexandra Shulman, calling 

Enninful “an influential figure in 

the communities of fashion, 

Hollywood and music which 

shape the cultural zeitgeist”, 

adding that “by virtue of his 

talent and experience, Edward 

is supremely prepared to 

assume the responsibility of 

British Vogue“. It was noted that 

Enninful is much more popular 

on the internet than Shulman. 

In December 2020, Enninful 

was promoted to be the first 

European editorial director. 

He will take over Vogue’s 

editorial operations in France, 

Germany, Spain and Italy. 

In June 2023, it was 

announced Enninful will 

transition to a global advisory 

role at Vogue, publisher 

Condé Nast’s flagship title. In 

the new position of editorial 

advisor to British Vogue and 

global creative and cultural 

advisor of Vogue, Enninful will 

“contribute to the creative 

and cultural success of the 

Vogue brand globally, while 

having the freedom to take on 

broader creative projects.” 

Enninful was awarded an 

OBE for his services to diversity 

in the fashion industry, and in 

2018 he received the Media 

Award in Honour of Eugenia 

Sheppard from the CFDA in 

recognition of his career-long 

contribution to the fashion 

industry. 

His Legacy at 

Vogue ….and 

the Fashion 

Universe 

When Edward Enninful was 

appointed editor-in-chief 

of British Vogue in 2017, he 

became the first man and the 

first black person to hold the 

title. 

Throughout his six-year 

tenure, the firsts have 

continued, with Enninful, 

recently promoted to a new 

global role, championing a 

series of pioneering moments.

In 2018 the author Paris Lee 

became the first trans person 

to feature in the title while a 

year later the actor Laverne 

Cox became its first trans 

cover star. 

In 2020, Judi Dench 

became Vogue’s oldest cover 

star at the age of 85. 

That same year its 

September cover was shot by 

Misan Harriman, the first black 

male photographer in the 

magazine’s 107-year history. 

Two years later the Oscarnominated 

actor Timothée 

Chalamet became the first 

man to land a solo cover 

while most recently a series 

of covers featured for the first 

time a vanguard of disabled 

talent. 

In another first, the 

magazine was made 

available as a braille and 

audio edition. 

Last year, in an interview 

with WWD, Enninful mused on 

how his role as editor-in-chief 

had changed in just five short 

years. 

“When I started [at British 

Vogue] in 2017, I was dealing 

with a magazine. Today, I’m 

dealing with a brand that 

includes print, digital, audio, 

video and podcasts, which 

is so exciting for somebody 

who’s so forward looking.” 

During his predecessor 

Alexandra Shulman’s 25-year 

reign, only 12 covers out of 

306 featured black women 

while the workforce was mostly 

white.

By 2020, Enninful’s editorial 

team was made up of 25% 

people of colour, and having 

been told: “Black girls on the 

cover don’t sell,” revenue was 

up while digital traffic rose 

75% year on year in the first 

half of 2021. 

Describing his vision, 

Enninful said: “I wanted 

to reflect what I saw here 

growing up, to show the world 

as this incredibly rich, cultured 

place. I wanted every 

woman to be able to find 

themselves in the magazine.” 

His debut December 2017 

issue was dedicated to Great 

Britain and featured the black 

model and activist Adwoa 

Aboah on the cover while 

inside there were features 

with Kate Moss, Salman 

Rushdie, Steve McQueen, 

Sadiq Khan and Skepta. 

It instantly went viral. One 

thousand special hard-bound 

souvenir copies sold out 

within hours. And in a further 

sign that the gilded halls of 

Vogue House were no longer 

so exclusive, Enninful invited 

readers to a free meetand-greet 

event. Hundreds 

queued up outside. 

At the time of his 

appointment, Condé Nast 

described Enninful as “an 

influential figure in the 

communities of fashion, 

Hollywood and music which 

shape the cultural zeitgeist”. 

With an unrivalled contacts 

list – he counts Naomi 

Campbell, Oprah Winfrey, 

Beyoncé and Rihanna as 

close friends – Enninful has 

bolstered British Vogue’s 

position and transformed it 

into a key powerplayer. 

Such is his influence, 

Enninful revealed in April 

that he had turned down 

advertising from major 

fashion brands which do not 

share his vision of inclusivity.

While other brands reduced 

output during the 2020 

pandemic, Enninful continued 

to push the boundaries of 

what a Vogue cover star looks 

like, this time choosing three 

frontline workers, a midwife, a 

train driver and supermarket 

assistant to appear on his July 

Heroes issue. 

In 2021 subscriptions to 

British Vogue grew by more 

than 14% while the number of 

digital visitors rose by 22%. 

Last month a report by 

Launchmetrics, which ranks 

magazines in terms of fashion, 

luxury and beauty advertising, 

placed British Vogue in first 

position while American Vogue 

was in third. 

Enninful has become a 

brand in his own right. His 

Instagram is peppered with 

photographs of him and his 

inner circle. It spans everything 

from coffee with Oprah 

Winfrey and Gayle King to 

red carpet appearances 

with Leonardo DiCaprio at 

the Cannes film festival and 

tea with Lionel Richie at King 

Charles’ coronation. Last year 

his memoir, A Visible Man, 

topped the bestsellers lists.

The fashion world is abuzz over whether Anna 

Wintour nudged out UK Vogue editor, Edward 

Enninfold. Did She? 

When Edward Enninful 

announced in June that 

he was stepping down 

as editor-in-chief of 

British Vogue and taking 

on a rather bland-sounding new role 

at Condé Nast — Global Creative 

and Cultural Advisor of Vogue — the 

gossip began to fly: Did the move 

have Anna Wintour’s fingerprints all 

over it? 

Wags compared it to the moment 

in “The Devil Wears Prada” when 

formidable fashion editor Miranda 

Priestley out-maneuvers her French 

foe Jacqueline Follet, who had 

been gunning for Miranda’s job, by 

getting her another role. 

The hit movie, of course, was 

based on the 2003 novel by Lauren 

Weisberger — one of Wintour’s 

former assistants. 

But some in the industry say 

the move was a shrewd one to 

keep Enninful within the fold as he’s 

become a fashion world celebrity.

Rumors have been rife for 

years that Enninful, 51, was plotting 

to become the next editor of 

American Vogue, which would 

have meant turfing out Wintour in 

the process. 

But at 73, Wintour, who has 

been at the helm of US Vogue for 

34 years and is also the Global 

Editorial Director of Vogue editions 

around the world, has no plans 

to go anywhere — even as 

magazine circulation continues 

to plummet in this difficult media 

environment, her friends told Page 

Six. 

“People have tried to doubt 

Anna, to take her down, and she’s 

amazing — she just keeps on 

going” said one person who knows 

her well. 

“Anna has no plans to retire,” 

added a well-placed fashion 

source, who admitted that friends 

have told Wintour she should step 

back and relax. 

When announcing his move, 

Enninful said that Wintour was part 

of the decision for him to “play a 

broader role in enhancing Vogue 

globally.” 

Still, some sources were keen to 

stress that Wintour did not engineer 

it as a step down for Enninful, 

although it certainly takes him out 

of the limelight he’s earned as 

editor-in-chief. During his tenure, 

he’s been celebrated for making 

British Vogue a beacon of diversity. 


Alexandra Shulman, the former 

editor of British Vogue, has admitted: 

“It’s no secret that it has been a 

sadness and frustration … that he 

positioned himself and his vision by 

portraying my tenure at Vogue as if it 

were a crucible of white privilege. But 

in the intervening years I have learnt 

this sowrt of thing can happen.” 

But Shulman — whose own frosty 

relationship with Wintour was laid bare 

in a telling BBC documentary in 2016 

— said that Enninful “was ultimately 

always playing second fiddle to Anna 

Wintour.” 

As she wrote in the Daily Mail: 

“He leaves amid an avalanche 

of rumours of rifts with Wintour … 

But whether they are true or not, 

the announcement that he will be 

replaced by an ‘editorial content 

director,’ reporting to a multi-step 

ladder ending in the New York office, 

delivers a death knell to all that I 

treasured about the job.” 

Enninful, a former top stylist, was 

hired by Jonathan Newhouse, the 

chairman and former chief executive 

of Conde Nast International, in 2017, 

although Wintour would most certainly 

have had a say, sources confirmed. 

In 2020, Wintour apologized 

for the lack of diversity in her staff 

and her magazine. “I want to say 

plainly that I know Vogue has not 

found enough ways to elevate and 

give space to black editors, writers, 

photographers, designers and other 

creators,” she wrote in an internal 

email first reported by Page Six. “We 

have made mistakes, too, publishing 

images or stories that have been 

hurtful or intolerant.” 

However, some black journalists 

who had worked with Wintour said her 

note was a cynical ploy in response 

to the Black Lives Matters movement. 

Vogue was forced to deny a rift 

between Wintour and Enninful after 

she allegedly left him in tears by 

taking the plum spot next to the late 

Queen Elizabeth on the front row 

at Richard Quinn’s runway show for 

London Fashion Week in February 

2018. It was the monarch’s first — 

and last — appearance at a fashion 

show.

“The queen had never been to 

Fashion Week,” the fashion insider told 

Page Six. “It was a huge thing, and 

Anna got the photo op. Edward was 

blindsided. He was so upset at Anna, 

he was in tears.” 

Last September, when asked on 

Vogue’s video series 73 Questions 

what she thought she would be doing 

with her life if she weren’t an editor-inchief, 

Wintour deadpanned: “Conflict 

negotiation.” 

“There is no hatred, no animosity 

between Anna and Edward, they 

work together all the time,” stressed 

the source who knows Wintour well. 

Enninful recently published a 

memoir, “A Visible Man,” in which 

he charted his journey as the son 

of poor Ghanaian immigrants. His 

mother was a seamstress, and he 

grew up helping her to make clothes. 

This month, he posted a photo of 

the book cover emblazoned on the 

Duomo in Milan. 

“At the moment, Edward’s been 

limited to what deals he can accept 

due to Condé’s corporate policy, 

and he wants more,” said the Wintour 

source. 

Enninful counts a slew of 

celebrities as friends. He’s seen here 

with Salma Hayek, French billionaire 

François-Henri Pinault, Malala and her 

husband, Asser Malik, at the launch of 

his book at Claridge’s Hotel in London 

in September 2022. 

Enninful attempted to shut down 

the rumors of his plotting against 

Wintour last year, telling CNN: “I don’t 

want Anna’s job.” 

Enniful got the nickname the 

“Queen Mother” among British Vogue 

staffers because of his alleged divalike

There were claims that Enninful 

had assistants deliver him coffee 

at home on the weekends, but a 

source said that he actually used a 

delivery service. 

“I’ve seen his assistant jump out 

of a car and run into the [corner 

stores] to get him sweets when 

he pulls up to an event,” said one 

fashion editor. 

Enninful counts stars including 

Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss 

as his best friends. But sources 

told Page Six that Campbell and 

Enninful stopped talking briefly 

when she thanked Wintour after 

being awarded the Fashion 

Icon award at the British Fashion 

Awards in December 2020 — 

and neglected to cite Enninful, a 

friend of more than 30 years. 

However, they’re now back 

to being close and Campbell 

appeared on the cover of British 

Vogue with her baby daughter 

in February 2022. 

Enninful will leave British 

Vogue next year, as rumors swirl 

that Deputy Editor Sarah Harris 

could take over — or Vogue. 

com editor Chioma Nnadi, a 

popular Londoner based in 

NYC who is said to be firmly on 

“Team Anna.” 

Enninfu wrote to staff that 

he will “continue to contribute 

to the creative and cultural 

success of the Vogue brand 

globally while having the freedom to 

take on broader creative projects.” 

Shulman said: “There is no doubt 

he will be employed by big brands to 

create the strong messaging imagery 

that is his trademark and, with the 

high profile he has gained during 

his six years at Vogue, will be able to 

command big bucks for it. Vogue, in 

turn, will have access to some of his 

diversity credibility, and will be able to 

call on him when needed. These kind 

of arrangements are not, on previous 

evidence, known as very lasting gigs.” 

And as for Wintour, one fashion 

editor reported to Page Six that 

she has “mellowed” with age. Said 

another young fashion editor: “She 

loves talking to young talent and I 

think that’s what keeps her going.”

The word ‘Vogue’ possesses 

so much power within the 

fashion world. The glossy 

magazine is sold across 

the world and published in 19 

different languages. The queen 

of pop icon Madonna has 

a whole song dedicated to 

Vogue. The legacy is timeless 

and sought after, if you work for 

Vogue or appear in Vogue, you 

have made it in life. Vogue is THE 

fashion magazine. 

Arthur Baldwin Turnure founded 

Vogue in 1892, but it was very 

different to what it is now. The 

magazine was published weekly 

in America and it targeted the 

elite socialites of New York high 

society. The first copy had a price 

of 10 cents – around $3 to-date. 

Instead of fashion, the magazine 

focused on social etiquette, 

traditions of high society, and it 

reviewed books, theatre, music. 

In short, Vogue was a lifestyle 

magazine for the wealthy – a 

target audience that remains to 

this date. 

In 1909, Condé Montrose 

Nast, the founder of Condé Nast 

Publications, bought Vogue, 

and transformed it from a 

lifestyle magazine to a fashion 

magazine. It targeted women’s 

fashion, beauty, composure, and 

etiquette. He changed the weekly 

publication to publishing every 

fortnight. It became monthly in 

1973. 

Vogue became a magazine 

that valued high-quality photos, 

a focus that continues to evolve. 

British Vogue Editor, Alexandra 

Shulman states “In an average 

issue [of Vogue] there are over 

400 images.” Part of the appeal 

of reading Vogue is for the 

escapism it offers. Whilst the luxury 

fashion is targeted towards a 

wealthy audience, the magazine 

itself is not costly, meaning the 

average person can daydream 

and fantasise about a lifestyle 

that is portrayed as a dream. 

The high-quality photos featuring 

beautiful models in a sunny luxury 

resort, creates an aura for which 

the consumer longs. By having 

more photos than interviews, 

it allows our minds to transport 

ourselves to the appealing 

location and lifestyle Vogue is 

selling.

escapism, and be at the forefront 

of trends. In 1932, Vogue was 

one of the first magazines to print 

a coloured photo for the cover 

– it was of a swimmer holding 

a beach ball. When Vogue 

was first published, the cover 

would feature an illustration, 

or an image of a location, or 

it featured a person who was 

not famous: the first ever cover 

in 1892 featured a debutante 

at her début. The first female 

celebrity to appear on the cover 

was Madonna in 1989. 

In 1988, Anna Wintour 

became editor in chief for 

American Vogue – a title she 

still holds to-date, alongside 

the title ‘Dame’. She needed to 

rival the newly launched fashion 

magazine Elle, and made a 

series of changes in order to 

achieve this. She began to 

feature celebrities that were not 

just models on the cover of the 

magazine, such as actresses 

and even politicians (such as 

Hillary Clinton). This sparked a

wider interest and became 

an international trend. She 

expanded the target audience 

by launching Teen Vogue in 

2003, and Men’s Vogue in 2005 

in the United States. Vogue 

continues to be a fashion 

magazine, but it is aware of the

NHS workers on the cover of 

the July 2020 issue during the 

pandemic. This awareness keeps 

them relevant, as it still feels intouch 

with the world, whilst also 

balancing this with the ability to 

feature high-quality escapism 

images. 

Vogue’s success continues 

to grow, it unites 24.4 million 

readers globally, and 42 million 

unique monthly online users. In 

2009 The New York Times titled 

Vogue as “high fashion’s bible” 

which perfectly captures the 

importance each monthly issue 

holds. Vogue is the most famous 

fashion magazine in the world – if 

you have made it to Vogue, you 

have made it in life. 

Vogue is one of the best 

fashion publications in the world 

and many well-known fashion 

professionals have worked there.

The First Black Model to Appear 

on Vogue Magazine

Born 1945 as Peggy Ann 

Freeman in Detroit, Michigan, 

American model and actress 

Donyale Luna was discovered 

by the photographer David 

McCabe, she moved from 

Detroit to New York City to 

pursue a modeling career. 

In January 1965, a sketch 

of Luna appeared on the 

cover of Harper’s Bazaar. She 

became the first black model 

to appear on the cover of a 

Vogue magazine, the March 

1966 British issue, shot by 

photographer David Bailey. 

Legendary mannequinmaker 

Adel Rootstein, who had 

created a Twiggy mannequin 

the year before, made one 

of her in 1967. Luna’s was the 

first well-known, if not the first, 

mannequin of a black woman. 

Luna also appeared in several 

underground films by Andy 

Warhol, and had roles in Qui 

êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo? 

(1966), and most notably as 

Enotea in the 1969 Federico 

Fellini film Fellini Satyricon as well as 

Otto Preminger’s Skidoo, alongside 

Groucho Marx. 

Luna later moved to Italy 

and married photographer Luigi 

Cazzaniga. They had a daughter 

named Dream. But her fast rise 

also introduced her to LSD and 

heroin. She died of a heroin 

overdose in 1979 at the age of 33.

juice of potatoes or cucumbers. Take 

a cotton ball, soak it in the juice, and 

place it over your eyes. Make sure the 

entire area around the dark circles is 

covered. Leave it for 1-3 minutes and 

wash off with cold water. In case you 

are pressed for time, you can also 

directly place slices of cucumber or 

potato on your eyes.

Aloe Vera is an effective moisturizer. Moisturized skin is less

vera also helps to nourish the skin, preventing premature

How To Use Aloe Vera – Before hitting the sack, 

gently apply Aloe Vera gel under the eyes and massage 

for 5-7 minutes. Don’t rinse unless you feel sticky and 

uncomfortable. 

Cold Milk 

Cold milk is a natural cleanser for the eyes and also helps in 

soothing the sensitive skin around the eyes. Cold milk contains 

lactic acid, which not only helps to reduce puffiness but also 

lightens the skin. Additionally, potassium in milk allows the skin to 

stay better moisturised, leaving you with softer and supple skin.

How To Use Milk – Dip a cotton ball in cold milk and apply 

it to the eye area. Keep it for a while and then rinse the eyes with

eye pads in rose water and place them over the

it is beneficial to make Yoga and 

Meditation an everyday ritual! 

Yoga not only calms down the mind but 

also helps to regulate the body clock, 

and most importantly, it addresses most 

body problems from the core. 

Almond oil and Lemon juice 

Another tried and tested remedy to treat dark circles is 

to mix almond oil and lemon juice. Lemon juice’s active 

component is ascorbic acid, along with other nutrients it 

helps to reduce water retention which can cause puffy 

circles around the eyes. It also has a mild bleaching action, 

however, when used undiluted it can have the opposite 

effect and cause damage to the skin, so always use 

caution. 

How To Use Almond Oil & Lemon Juice – Take 

about a teaspoon of almond oil and a few drops of lemon 

juice, combine them, and gently apply it around the eye 

area. Massage and let it rest for 2 to 3 minutes. Rinse post 

that!

your eyes for 10 to 15 mins. Repeat

Tomatoes are natural bleaching 

agents. They also contain 

antioxidants that help to tame 

down the discolouration around 

the eye area. 

How To Use Tomatoes – 

Mix a teaspoon of tomato juice 

with a spoon of lemon juice 

and apply under both the eye 

areas. Let it remain for 10 minutes 

or so, and rinse off with cold 

water. Alternatively, you can also 

consume tomato juice mixed 

with some lemon juice and mint 

leaves to get rid of dark circles.

Trinidad and Tobago 

Carnival, often referred to 

as “The Greatest Show on 

Earth,” consists of street 

parades by bands of 

costumed masqueraders, 

who are led by a King’s or 

Queen’s costumes, who 

also compete for King and 

Queen titles on Dimanche 

Gras (Carnival Sunday). 

These celebrations originated 

during a period of slavery 

where slaves were banned 

from attending their masters’

balls and parties, so instead they 

improvised by having their own 

costumed events in their quarters. 

After Emancipation in 1838, 

the former slaves challenged 

their plantation owners to 

publicly host their own Carnival 

celebrations. Since then, Carnival 

has evolved into an inclusive, 

elaborate billion-dollar revenue 

earner for Trinidad and Tobago. 

It is by far the most spectacular 

event on the nation’s calendar. 

These celebrations take place 

on the Monday and Tuesday 

directly before Ash Wednesday, 

usually marked in February 

or March. A Carnival band 

could hold as many as 3,000 

masqueraders, and to control the 

number of people on the streets, 

organizers would divide the 

band into sections of 200 to 500 

masqueraders. The epicenter for 

the two-day Parade of the Bands 

in Trinidad and Tobago is Port 

of Spain, where I live. However, 

similar street parties are held at 

the sister capital, San Fernando 

and at community level in 

Mayaro, Chaguanas, Arima and 

Tobago. 

While extreme energy and 

expensive skimpy costumes 

characterize Trinidad Carnival, 

Tobago Carnival, known as Bago 

Carnival, is a more laidback 

celebration focusing on the 

theatrical and folk elements of 

Carnival. Masqueraders usually 

choose to cool down in Tobago, 

as it’s considered to be the “last 

lap” after Trinidad for those who 

need to detach from the ecstasy 

of Carnival. The best time to visit 

Trinidad and Tobago for Carnival 

is the week before Carnival 

Monday and Tuesday. 

Before COVID-19 struck fear 

and uncertainty into the nation, 

the last parade was held in 

February 2020. TRIBE, Trinidad

and Tobago’s premier carnival 

band, is composed of six bands: 

Tribe, The Lost Tribe, Bliss, Harts, 

Rogue, and Pure. The Lost Tribe 

is a band that strongly focuses 

on narrative and storytelling 

in its presentation. In 2020 the 

theme was “Anansi”, which paid 

homage to ancestry and the 

stories of and from the ancestors 

of Caribbean people. 

The costumes, such as 

Eniyan, represented the elders 

who told the stories of Anansi, 

and carried it from generation 

to generation. Vibrant hues 

of yellow, orange, red and 

green feathers adorned these 

costumes, along with animalistic 

features and accessories, such 

as claw-decorated gloves, tribal 

and animal-themed headwear 

and prints, and African-themed 

jewelry. This is prevalent in 

Carnival fashion, as Anansi 

originated from the landscape 

and peoples of Africa. 

The fashion of Carnival 

Monday and Tuesday differ 

as Monday is known as the 

“let loose,” less structured 

day, where attendees can 

wear custom swimwear and 

casualwear such as sequin 

bodysuits with sheer leggings, or 

shorts and a top or T-shirt, which 

incidentally most people prefer. 

Meanwhile,Tuesday is brought to 

life in full costume and splendor. 

Trinidad and Tobago is 

multicultural (Amerindian, 

European, African, Indian, 

Chinese and Middle Eastern) and 

all of its groups have contributed 

musical influences to the 

sounds of Carnival. Trinidad-style 

Carnivals have been evolving 

around the world in places 

such as Tokyo, Berlin, Hollywood, 

Virginia, Miami, New York and 

Toronto. 

Renaissance Carnival, the

Miami-based celebration, 

is currently the go-to for 

trinis (Trinidadians) as the 

entertainment sector from 

clubs to parties have been 

shut down since 2020 due to 

COVID. The upcoming October 

affair has most trinis buzzing 

with excitement and nostalgia 

while the rest of us are home 

with tabanca – a trini slang for 

suffering or missing something 

greatly.

Salmon with 

Horseradish 

Cream Recipe

I 

first learnt about Double-Smoked Salmon with 

Horseradish Cream about two years ago, and I never 

looked back. 

Franky, you can never go wrong with this dish, and 

I have made it more than two dozen times to guests of diverse 

backgrounds and cultures. Yes, they all loved it! 

This weekend, please give yourself a threat with our doublesmoked 

salmon with horseradish cream recipe. Let’s go!

FOOD 

Ingredients 

• 1 tbsp crème fraîche 

• 1 tsp horseradish sauce 

• 4 slices smoked salmon 

• 10 large cooked prawns, 

peeled but tails left on 

[For the salad] 

• Juice 1 lime, finely grated 

zest of ½ 

• 1 tsp clear honey 

• ½ tsp finely grated fresh 

root ginger 

• 2 tbsp light olive oil 

• 2 handfuls of small leaf 

salad 

Method 

1. Mix the crème 

fraîche with the horseradish 

and a little salt and pepper. 

2. For the dressing, 

whisk the lime juice and zest 

with the honey, ginger and 

seasoning, then whisk in the 

oil. 

3. Lay the smoked 

salmon and prawns on two 

plates, then top with a dollop 

of horseradish cream. 

4. Toss the salad in most 

of the dressing and pile on 

top. 

5. Drizzle the remaining 

dressing around the plate 

and serve.
