The Oprah Winfrey edition is
just because I have loved and
Is anyone else tired of all of the
articles and shopping roundups
telling you what clothes you’re
“supposed” to have? I mean,
do we really all need a little black
dress? What about a midi skirt?
Does every woman need to have
both a trench coat and a leather
jacket in her closet?
The truth is that we don’t all feel
confident in every silhouette, and
we all have different styles (that’s
what makes fashion interesting!).
So instead of telling you again
how you need a classic pair of
black heels (when you’re much
more of a flats person), here are
the items every woman should
(actually) have in her closet, easily
adjustable for every style, body
type, and budget, so you’ll never
have to say, “I have nothing to
wear!” ever again.
An everyday work tote
Yes, all of us will likely have a lot of purses throughout our
lives. Arguably the most important one is a work tote. Think
about it: your work tote is basically like the magical bag in
Mary Poppins. Need a phone charger? You’ve got one.
Looking for a lip gloss? Check the side pocket. Think you
forgot your daily planner? Nope, it’s in there. Craving a
piece of gum? Oh yeah, there’s one in there somewhere
(can your envelope clutch do that?). Make sure you have
a work tote that you love and will last you a long time
because you’re going to be carrying it everywhere.
Trends to Know
Fashion Week F/
Written by Jasmine Fox-Suliaman | Edited by Praise David
Fashion can sometimes feel
reductive and repetitive, or at
least, that’s the perspective
one can come to hold after years
of following the industry.
It can be easy to fall into a
sartorial-inspiration dry spell
when the trends begin to feel
monotonous, the production cycle
is far too fast to keep up with, and
the brands feel inauthentic to their
identities.
All of this is to say that stumbling
upon something that feels new is
like a reawakening of one’s entire
perspective.
Ahead, we’ve highlighted 10
major trends from CPHFW’s fall/
winter 2023 collections. If these
can’t break you out of a clothingrelated
rut, nothing will.
1
Iced Out in Sequins
It wasn’t just extreme textures
that were spotlighted on the
fall/winter 2023 runways in
Copenhagen. Sequins were
too. Of course, it should be
noted that metallic-hued
pieces were a prevalent
part of spring/summer 2023
collections and will continue
to be prominent throughout
the year. But with the Scandi
design set, it wasn’t just about
creating shiny pieces. Rather,
designers were taking classic
silhouettes and using sequins
to introduce texture and
vibrant tints into the mix.
Not Your Typical Textures
With every cold winter breeze comes thicker
fabrics. Fall collections are typically filled
with textured pieces, from chunky knitting
to wool, velvet, and leather. But to say that
Copenhagen’s fall/winter 2023 collections
were typical would be a disservice to the
depth of creativity put on display to create
richly textured pieces. Instead of opting
for traditional winter fabrics, designers
were daring and played with textiles and
techniques to bring how the pieces looked
and felt to the forefront.
Sharp Suiting
No matter how many trends come and go,
one thing remains relevant: suiting. From
Paris to New York, there’s no shortage of how
blazers, trousers, waistcoats, and everything
else in-between have continued to be a
prevalent part of collections. And while one
could argue that suiting isn’t cutting-edge,
there is something to be said about how
Danish designers approached them for the
new season.
Skin Is Still In
It’s no secret that fashion has been having
a love affair with risqué pieces. From
the pants-less looks to bra tops to micro
hemlines, there’s no shortage of sultry
separates on the runway. But possibly the
most prevalent trend of them all is the
embrace of sheer fabrics. While mesh,
gauze, chiffon, and open-work knitted
pieces are nothing new, we’ve seen more
and more designers play with opaque
textiles, including at CPHFW.
TRENDS
Cool Canadian Tuxedos
By now, you’ve hopefully been convinced that some of the
coolest trends this year will be exported from Copenhagen. If
you still need convincing, let this final noteworthy trend be what
get’s you on board. We’ve already seen Canadian tuxedos play
a prevalent role in spring/summer 2023 collections, but Danish
designers took the trend and gave it an even trendier update.
So Many
Sweaterdresses
The sweaterdress has undoubtedly
cemented itself as a cold-weather
staple in the minds of many
around the world. One could even
argue that it’s such a universal
piece it can’t possibly feel unique.
Yet as the Copenhagen design
set showed their fall/winter 2023
collections, they proved otherwise.
Belts, Rebooted
As I’ve previously reported, belts have had a renaissance on the
runway. Not only have we seen designers begin to style more
runway looks with this accessory, but it’s also become a pivotal part
of the design details of the garments. And that trend has continued
with the release of fall/winter 2023 collections from Copenhagen.
Seeing Double
Let’s be honest: Layering
is a nonnegotiable,
especially in a super-cold
city like Copenhagen. And
while layering is a necessary
part of life, it still is noteworthy
enough to talk about. Unlike
previous seasons that focused on
excessive layering, the Scandi set
stripped back the maximal styling
elements and made wearable
pieces for their fall/winter 2023
collections. Rather than adding
layer upon layer on top of each
other, designers used similar-cut
pieces together to create a
doubled effect.
TRENDS
Extra-Long Scarves
I know what you may be thinking:
“Scarves, really?” The accessory
is a winter staple, after all, and is
always relevant. But once again,
the CPHFW design set managed
to take a seemingly simple staple
and make it all the more stylish.
And the way they did this was
through extra-long and often
dramatic scarves.
Spread-Collar Coats
While most may assume some of the biggest outerwear trends come
from New York or Paris, the truth is that they’re secretly coming from
Copenhagen. The ultra-chilly city does not play when it comes to its
outwear, and the fall/winter 2023 collections further prove that.
REPORTAGE
Oprah
Winfrey:
An amazon of Womanhood
Written by Apoorva Giraj, Megan Schaltegger
and Kayla Blanton
Edited by Amenna Daayo
Last week, the news of the death of
American-born Swiss singer Tina Turner,
famously known as the “Queen of
Rock’ n’ Roll”, sent global shockwaves.
One person whose tribute headlined all
media mentions was our cover star, Oprah.
“I am a better woman, a better human,
because her life touched mine,” Winfrey
wrote.
On May 24, Tina Turner died in her
Switzerland home after experiencing
a “long illness,” her publicist said in a
statement, per Today. She was 83. And in
the hours after the somber news broke,
fans, friends, and fellow stars poured out
their hearts in remembrance of the singer
online.
Oprah Winfrey was one of them—as
a self-proclaimed Turner “groupie,” she
was deeply impacted by her life and
summed up their relationship beautifully in
a touching tribute.
“I started out as a fan of Tina Turner,
then a full-on groupie, following her from
show to show around the country, and
then, eventually, we became real friends,”
Winfrey captioned a carousel of photos
that pictured herself and Turner laughing
on stage, hugging, dancing, and toasting
champagne.
“She is our forever goddess of rock ‘n’
roll who contained a magnitude of inner
strength that grew throughout her life. She
was a role model not only for me but for
the world.
She encouraged a part of me I didn’t
know existed.”
These few words define the type of human
and woman Oprah Winfrey is, and has
developed herself to become.
Oprah Winfrey is a media
She is best known as host of
The Oprah Winfrey Show, which
aired for 25 seasons, from
1986 to 2011.
Born in Kosciusko, Mississippi,
Winfrey’ career took off when
she moved to Baltimore
in 1976 to host People Are
Talking. She was then recruited
by a Chicago television station
to be a part of a morning
show, where she would later
become the host of her own,
wildly popular program.
In 2011, she launched
her own television network,
the Oprah Winfrey Network
(OWN) and in 2013, President
Barack Obama awarded her
the nation’s highest civilian
honor, the Presidential Medal
of Freedom. A passionate
entrepreneur, Winfrey is the
first African American woman
billionaire.
She has impacted
nearly every aspect of the
entertainment world while
engaging, inspiring and
enriching the lives of millions.
Her achievements would
be enough to fill more than
a few great lives, but in
fact this beloved producer,
television host, actress, major
player on Broadway and in
Hollywood, author and selfmade
billionaire philanthropist
is the stuff of greatness. From
her soul-stirring performances
on screen to her numerous
producing endeavors and
award-winning television show,
she has spent her life creating
innovative projects that have
proven time and again her
unique ability to enhance the
world’s exposure to the arts
and perception of humanity.
Oprah Gail Winfrey was
born poor in rural Mississippi,
to a soldier and an unwed
teenage mother. Her
childhood was tough by
any standards, but the
grandmother who raised her
on a farm in Kosciusko taught
the little girl to read at the age
of three. Oprah recited poems
and Bible verses in church,
became known as the Little
Speaker before she was sent
away to Milwaukee.
Her mother Vernita found
work as a maid there, and
while mother was away in
their inner city apartment
little Oprah was repeatedly
abused, for years. She tried
running away from that
nightmare, was sent to a
detention home only to be
turned back when all the beds
were full.
Alone and homeless at
fourteen, she found her
father Vernon in Nashville
and found a home again.
He gave Oprah the structure
and home life she needed.
“As strict as he was,” she says,
making the best of my life and
would not accept anything
he thought was less than my
She was smart and she
was beautiful. At 17, she
won a beauty contest in
Nashville, an on-air job with
an African American radio
station, and a scholarship
from Tennessee State
University, where she majored
in Speech Communications
and Performing Arts. At 19,
she became the first female
African American news
anchor in Nashville. She joined
WJZ-TV News in Baltimore as
co-anchor, where she also
co-hosted her first talk show,
People Are Talking.
Oprah knew how to listen.
But, for all her success, few
could have expected that
when she moved to Chicago
in 1984 to host Channel 7’s
A.M. Chicago that she would
redefine the talk show format
and change television forever.
The show was renamed The
Oprah Winfrey Show, and the
rest is history. Still, that history
was far from finished. Even as
America fell in love with this
straightforward, unassuming
lady, Steven Spielberg
watched some tapes of her
show sent by Quincy Jones,
liked what he saw, and offered
Oprah Winfrey the role of Sofia
in his film adaptation of Alice
Walker’s novel The Color Purple.
Her performance earned her
nominations for both the Oscar
and the Golden Globe for Best
Supporting Actress.
Her love of acting was the
real thing, and even as the
rest of her whirlwind of a life
continued, Oprah Winfrey
later would again earn critical
acclaim for her performance
in the film adaptation of
Richard Wright’s classic
Native Son. Her relationship
with The Color Purple would
prove long-lasting: Oprah
Winfrey produced a huge
Broadway and national hit
with the musical The Color
Purple. She formed her own
Harpo Productions in 1986
-- “Harpo” is “Oprah” spelled
backwards --as The Oprah
Winfrey Show went national
and her production company
would become a major force
not only in television but also in
films, publishing and the thenburgeoning
Internet field.
Her interview with Michael
Jackson in 1993 drew more
A Look
into Oprah
Winfrey’s
HBCU
May 2023 Commencement Address
Amenna Daayo
Oprah tells the class of
2023 to follow ‘still, small
voice’. “I got my degree
from Tennessee State,
right around the time I got my
third Emmy,” said Oprah.
Oprah Winfrey delighted
graduates at her alma mater
Tennessee State University earlier
this month, telling the story of
how she fell one credit short of
graduating as she launched the
media career that would make
her a household name.
Giving the commencement
address at the historically Black
university, Winfrey recalled that she
was living with her father in East
Nashville while attending college,
helping out in his store, and
presenting the weekend news at
a Black radio station. That’s where
the lead anchor of the local CBS
television affiliate heard her voice.
He called her at school to ask if
she wanted a job.
“I said, ‘No sir. TV? Not really, sir,
because my father says I have
to finish school, and school is just
too important,’” Winfrey recalled.
She then went back to class
and related the conversation
to her scene design professor,
who “looked at me as if I didn’t
have the brains that God gave
lettuce,” Winfrey said.
He spoke to her father, and
Winfrey took the job. Beginning
the second semester of her
sophomore year, Winfrey
arranged to finish her classes by
2:00 p.m. so she could work at
the television station from 2:30
to 10:30 and be home by her
father’s 11:00 p.m. curfew.
By the end of her senior year
in 1975, Winfrey’s career was in
full swing. So she wasn’t terribly
distressed to learn that she was
one credit short and would
not be able to graduate. But
her father would not let go of
the topic, asking her for years,
“‘When you going to get that
26
FEATURE
degree?’” she said.
Finally, in 1988, she was
allowed to write a paper and
submit some of her shows for
the final credit.
“So, I got my degree from
Tennessee State, right around
the time I got my third Emmy,”
Winfrey said.
Her success in life has come
from God’s grace and from
listening to what she called the
“still, small voice” inside while
filtering out the noise of the
world. That way, “you begin to
know your own heart and figure
out what matters most,” Winfrey
said. “Every right move I’ve
made has come from listening
deeply and following that still,
small voice.”
“Unfortunately, you are going
to encounter people who insist
that it’s not actually possible to
make any difference,” she said.
But she held up the examples
of Tennessee state Reps. Justin
Jones and Justin Pearson who
are “using their lives to prove
the cynics wrong.”
The Republican majority
expelled the two young Black
Democratic lawmakers last
month after they breached
decorum by protesting for
stricter gun laws from the House
floor. They were reinstated on
an interim basis by their local
city councils within days and
now face a special election to
regain their seats.
The United States is “not
a finished product,” Oprah
said. “Anything is possible.
The wheels are still in spin.
Saints walk among us. And as
Nelson Mandela so brilliantly
demonstrated, it’s better to be
hopeful than fearful, if for no
other reason than that hope
brings us one step closer to joy.”
Glamsquad Tribute
Tina Turner
The display by King Charles’
guards when they paid
tribute to Tina Turner at
Buckingham Palace said it
all that, indeed, the rock ‘n’ roll
legend is the best!
Fans of the great singer and
performer were surprised to see
King Charles and the royal honour
the 83-year-old rock ‘n’ roll legend
with a performance of her 1989
hit by the Band of the Welsh
Guards outside Buckingham
Palace during the changing of
the guard on Friday in London.
A heartwarming video of the
surprising tribute was shared on
Twitter by the Forces News via its
verified handle.
The 45-minute ceremony,
which is performed daily, involves
the King’s Guard handing over
responsibility to the New Guard
for the protection of Buckingham
and St. James’ Palace.
The 1st Battalion Welsh Guards
Corps of Drums accompanied
the Welsh Guards. Turner’s
song, which peaked at No. 15
on the Billboard Hot 100 chart,
has meaning for Prince William,
Charles’ eldest son.
In 2021, the Princes of Wales
recalled how his mother, Princess
Diana, would play music for
William and Prince Harry “to kind
of while away the anxiety of
going back to (boarding) school,”
he told Apple’s Time to Walk
podcast.
“And one of the songs I
massively remember and has
stuck with me all this time, and
I still, to this day, still quite enjoy
secretly, is Tina Turner’s ‘The Best’
because sitting in the backseat,
singing away, it felt like a real
family moment. And my mother,
she’d be driving along, singing at
the top of her voice. ... And when
I listen to it now, it takes me back
to those car rides and brings
back lots of memories of my
mother.” He said at the time.
Tina Turner: Simply the
Best
The singer, born Anna Mae
Bullock in Tennessee, began
performing in the 1950s when she
was still in high school.
After meeting her first husband,
Ike Turner, and his ensemble
band, the Kings of Rhythm, she
was catapulted into stardom as
the Ike & Tina Turner Revue.
By the 1980s, when she had
filed for divorce and embarked
on a solo career, Turner was an
unparalleled music icon and had
been given the Queen of Rock’ n’
Roll moniker.
Her many accolades
include:
• Two spots in the Rock
& Roll Hall of Fame (she was
inducted with Ike Turner in 1991
and as a solo artist in 2021).
• A star on the Hollywood
Walk of Fame.
• A lifetime-achievement
award from the Recording
Academy.
• Eight Grammys.
She was also a trailblazer and
became the first Black artist and
woman on the cover of Rolling
Stone.
Wealth and Worth
Turner’s wealth was estimated
at 225 million Swiss francs, or
around $225 million, in 2022
by the Swiss business magazine
Bilanz.
Streams of the music icon’s
recordings earned her around
$3.7 million annually in the years
before her death. Turner sold
more than 100 million records
worldwide during her lifetime,
30
according to Billboard.
Her 1984 solo album, “Private
Dancer,” sold 10 million copies
and featured her only No. 1 hit,
“What’s Love Got to Do With It.”
She had five other top-10
singles, including “I Don’t Wanna
Fight,” “Better Be Good To Me,”
“We Don’t Need Another Hero,”
“Private Dancer,” and “Typical
Male.”
Billboard reported that $2
million of her revenue from
streaming services came from
outside the US. This shouldn’t be
surprising as Turner once told Larry
King in a 1997 interview that she
was a bigger star in Europe than
she had ever been in America.
In comparison, Billboard
reported that $920,000 came
from domestic streams, while her
catalogue also brought in around
$700,000 annually from synchs.
Life and Marriage
Turner’s first marriage ended
abruptly in 1976 after she and Ike
got into a fight on the way to their
hotel one evening. After putting
up with years of physical abuse
from her spouse, she decided
to flee with only 36 cents and a
Mobil credit card in her pocket.
The couple had four children
together, one biological son
named Ronnie, as well as Ike’s
sons from a previous relationship,
Ike Jr. and Michael, and her own
that she shared with one of Ike’s
Kings of Rhythm bandmates,
Craig.
Turner was given custody of
all four after the divorce was
finalized in 1978.
Turner said that she never
received any money in the
settlement, just two cars and the
rights to her stage name.
“The divorce, I got nothing. No
money, no house. So I said: I’ll
just take my name,” she said in
an interview featured in the HBO
documentary “Tina.”
The Global Tours
Her final tour, which she
embarked on in 2008, brought in
more than $132 million, while her
2000 tour earned her more than
$120 million.
Just before she retired, Turner
hit the road for one final farewell
with the “Tina!: 50th Anniversary
Tour.”
It kicked off in Kansas City,
Missouri, in October 2008 and
concluded with its 90th show in
Sheffield, England, in May 2009.
The North American leg of
the tour saw her earn more than
$47.7 million, making it one of
the highest-grossing domestic
tours that year, according to
Reuters.
The European leg, meanwhile,
brought in more than $84.8
million, per Billboard.
The “Twenty Four Seven Tour,”
which Turner completed in 2000,
was also a huge success and
raked in more than $120 million.
“Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,”
which the singer oversaw as
an executive producer, has
made millions since it opened in
London’s West End in 2018.
While it’s not known exactly
how much of a cut of the profits
the singer received, Turner and
Erwin Bach, her husband and
manager, were credited as
executive producers on the
production.
Tina Enjoyed Her Final
Days…
Turner sold her entire
catalogue to the music
company BMG in 2021 for an
estimated $50 million.
Rolling Stone reported that
the deal Turner struck with the
German music company
included her recordings and
writings as well as her name and
likeness. At the time, Turner was
still signed to the label Warner
Music.
While BMG — which also owns
rights to the work of Mick Jagger,
David Bowie, and John Lennon,
among others — declined to
disclose financial details, Forbes
reported the following year that
the estimated value of the sale
was $50 million.
Turner said at the time:
“Like any artist, the protection
of my life’s work, my musical
inheritance, is something
personal. I am confident that
with BMG and Warner Music, my
work is in professional and reliable
hands.”
Turner and her second
husband owned homes in
Switzerland and France. The
Grammy winner and Bach, who
she married in 2013 after 27
years together, purchased a
country estate on Lake Zurich in
Switzerland for 70 million Swiss
francs, according to the Swiss
newspaper Handelszeitung.
The home, which the
newspaper reported was
near Roger Federer’s lakeside
mansion, covers 24,000 square
meters and comprises 10
buildings, plus a swimming pool
and a jetty.
While the property was
only purchased in the fall of
2021, Turner had been living in
Switzerland since 1995.
Prior to that, she and Bach
rented a château known as
the Villa Algonquin, which is just
a stone’s throw away — Turner
wasn’t able to purchase a
property until after she became a
Swiss citizen in 2013 because of
Swiss ownership rules.
The couple also shared a
villa designed by the architect
Bruno Guistini on the French
Riviera, per a 2000 interview with
Architectural Digest.
Every year, the first Monday
in May marks one of the
most exciting fashion
events of the year — the Met
Gala! The 2023 event on May
1 celebrated the late great
designer Karl Lagerfeld.
We’ve rounded up some of
the photos making the rounds
on social media of the stars
who exemplified the legend’s
fashion legacy of the great
designer Karl Lagerfeld.
Fashion houses like Chloe,
Fendi, Balmain, and, of course,
Chanel — and a host of others
tried their best to make Karl
proud. But did they miss the
point? Let’s find out…
Our fashion editors at
Glamsquad sat over
Sasha
Praise
Jenna Ortega
The Wednesday star
delighted us in this Thom
Browne look combining
Goth, Flamenco, and
Mexican design inspirations,
rendered in the tweeds and
pearls for which Chanel is
known. Above average.
Verdict: 6/10
It pays homage to Karl, to
fashion, and even to
Ortega’s already iconic
Wednesday dance. I
understand why some
people may not be blown
away by this outfit. Lol
Verdict: 7/10
The outfit pays homage
to Karl, but it really didn’t
You will never be
Verdict: 5/10
“While we would never
have guessed that this
wild look came courtesy
of Dior Homme, we think
it’s kind of hilarious that
the “Lost in the Citadel”
singer convinced the classic
menswear house to provide
him with this sparkly, queer,
über-glam and very hot look.”
I will give a 5 for the attempt.
This outfit makes for
Somehow, this version
makes it seem
gimmicky. I prefer the
Verdict: 5/10
Olivia appeared in an
updated take on
a classic vintage
Chloé design by
Jennifer Lopez
Sasha
Praise
She wore a custom Ralph
Lauren gown contrasted
rich black velvet with slinky
pale pink silk and featured
a bodice that was more skin
than fabric as well as a bow
detail that trailed behind her as
duelling trains. But I just think this
is not an outfit for Lopez.
Verdict: 4/10
The halter-style neckline was
great — it included a floral
element that had to be
heated and moulded by
hand to give it a realistic
flower feel. So, she gets an
average for me for that.
Verdict: 5/10
Sorry, Jennifer Lopez,
but this homage to Karl
Lagerfeld was a miss.
Lopez will undoubtedly be
Verdict: 9/10
Penelope Cruz
the prodigal son, for some personal
With the Coronation, we
A new era has come. The dawn
will give you a clue.
Yes, the favourite meal of arguably one of the wealthiest
individuals on the planet, worth over $4 Billion, is not caviar or one of
the most expensive lobster dishes. Guess what it is…
On a recent birthday, Oprah shared her meal of choice for
celebrating — one of her all-time favourite dishes, black-eyed pea
stew. Black-eyed peas are a food often associated with good luck,
especially in the South, and it seems like Oprah likes to include it in
her meal planning whenever she has the opportunity.
FOOD
DIRECTIONS
• In a Dutch oven or stock
pot over medium-high heat,
warm the oil. Add the onions
and cook, stirring occasionally,
until they’re softened and
fragrant, 3 to 4 minutes.
• Add the ham hocks
or sausage and garlic, turn
the heat down to medium,
and cook for 5 minutes more,
stirring often so that the onions
become tender but not brown.
• Toss the tomatoes into
the pot and cook, stirring often,
for 5 minutes more.
• Add the stock, black-eyed
peas, and water.
• Increase the heat, bring
everything to a boil, and stir well.
• Add the salt and pepper
and adjust the heat to maintain
a fairly boisterous simmer. Cover
partially and gently simmer,
stirring now and then, until the
peas are tender, 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
• Add a little more water if
it starts to look more oatmeal-like
than stew-like.
• Remove the ham hocks or
sausage links and transfer them
to a plate until cool enough to
handle.
• Shred the ham, crumble, or
slice the sausage, return it to the pot,
and stir well. Serve the stew hot or
warm.
