Bail and Katie helping cull rats
By SHELLEY TOPP
Dogs are helping the AshleyRakahuri
RivercareGroup (ARRG) to locate rats
alongthe braided river nearRangiora.
LeonaKirk, who runs her business
Wildlife Protection Services from
Timaru, has two specially trained
conservation dogs —aborderterrier/
fox terrier cross named Bail, and a
spaniel named Katie —which were
helping sniff out ratsinthe riverbed
last week.
Detectiondogs have beenused
successfully along other braided
rivers and have shown theycan find
rat nests, track ratsand sometimeskill
them,soafulltime rat dog and
handler is definitely on the ARRG’s
wish list.
Leonaand her dogs spent three days
surveying the south bank of the
AshleyRakahuri Riverwhere most
rats have previously been caught.
ARRG spokesman Grant Davey says
rats are the mostdestructive predator
alongthe river and arecent boom in
numbers means theypose the biggest
risk to theendangered birds which
breedthere.
It appears there are similar
problems in most other rivers.
‘‘Without asolution to therat
problem, BlackFronted Terns are on
apath towards extinction,’’Grant
says.
It hoped to get Leona back during
the nesting seasonfor another three
days.
‘‘If ARRG had it's own rat dog and
handler, it seems likely we wouldn't
have arat problem.’’
From 2004 to 2017ARGG caughtfew
rats, sometimes none in ayear, in its
traps along the river, making up atiny
proportion of its catch.
‘‘But sincethen numbershave
boomed,’’ Grant says.
In the last year theymadeupmore
than half of ARRG’s catch.
‘‘We caught383 Shiprats, 82 Norway
rats and 54 of undetermined species
from August1,2022, to July31, 2023.’’
It is not known why the increase in
rat numbers has occurred.
The Norway rat is ARRG’s biggest
problem.
‘‘Wehaven't seen or caught any Ship
ratsout on the river where the birds
nest.
‘‘They are most often caught in traps
under trees.
‘‘Ship rats don'tdirectly threaten
braided riverbirds, but they are no
doubt amajorpredator for birds that
nestinthe trees,’’ Grant says.
However intensiveuse of trail
(motiondetection) cameras in the last
three nesting seasons, and the catch in
ARRGtraps,has shown Norway rats to
be easily the most lethal predator on
the river.
‘‘They have completely wiped out
several blackfronted terncolonies,
eaten the eggs and sometimes the
chicks,’’ Grant says. ‘‘They have also
taken eggs from Wrybill and Banded
Dotterel nests and are interpreted to
havetaken more than100 BlackBilled
Gullchicks from acolony in 2019.’’
Breeding rates of BlackFronted
Terns have now plummetted to around
one fledgling per 10 nests.
Assault very distressing -Mayor
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
The Amberley community is in shock
after ‘‘a very distressing’’ assault of a
pizza shop worker, says Hurunui Mayor
Marie Black.
Mrs Black was responding after an
employee at Big Bites Pizza on Carters
Road, Amberley, was attacked by three
men wielding baseball bats, while
putting the rubbish out at the end of his
shift.
‘‘It is very distressing. It doesn’t sit
nicely with the values we have in our
district around being awelcoming
community,’’ she said.
‘‘I am pretty saddened by it all. It is a
very sad day when we get that sort of
thing happening in our community.’’
Mrs Black said she had been in contact
with the store manager and was relieved
to hear the employee was OK.
‘‘We know he’s well, but it doesn’t take
away the anxiety which comes from this
type of incident.’’
According to asocial media post by the
store, the employee had only arrived in
New Zealand from India four months
ago.
His wife and 6yearold son were back
in India and relying on money being sent
back, the post said.
Mrs Black said it was reminder for
people to be more vigilant ‘‘for these
types of behaviours’’.
‘‘We need to make sure that we
continue to work hard to be awelcoming
community and to support those who are
positive contributors to our
communities.’’
Canterbury Rural Area Commander
Inspector Peter Cooper called on
anyone with helpful information to
contact police on 105 or CrimeStoppers
on 0800 555 111.
He said police were conducting
extensive inquiries, including viewing
CCTV footage.
Despite arecent spike in crime, North
Canterbury remained one of the safest
communities in New Zealand, Mr
Cooper said.
‘‘Yes, we have seen aboom in retail
crime and on the news we see crimes
happening in Auckland and
Work sniffing out rodents very rewarding
From Page 1
Leona says she began training dogs to
‘‘I was fortunatetohavebeenable to
start training dogs at avery young age
under theguidance of agood family
friend who wasthe coordinatorofthe
ConservationDogs programme at the
time—the late Scott Theobald,’’ she
says.
‘‘Beingraised in the rural
Marlborough Sounds area and being
Big Bites Pizza ... The scene of an attack on aworker.
Christchurch, but we haven’t really seen
alot of it out here.’’
But he said the growing population
and improved transport access were
contributing to achanging environment
in the Waimakariri and Hurunui
districts.
‘‘We encourage visitors to come out
here and we’ve seen increased traffic
from Christchurch, with people coming
out and spending money with our local
businesses.
‘‘But it cuts both ways and so you also
attract criminal elements.’’
While crime rates have not increased
in the region, Mr Cooper reminded
residents to lock their cars, and to
ensure valuables and work tools were
locked away securely.
Anyone who sees any suspicious
behaviour should contact police by
either calling 111 in an emergency, or
105 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
‘‘Scottygave us ourfirst pup, and I
started training her to detect rodents,
and was fully certified two years
later.’’
She saysthe work she does withBail
and Katie is hugely rewardingbut can
also be confronting.
‘‘It can be really hardaswell when
you are constantly confronted by the
enormity of the problem these birds
‘‘They really do have alot stacked
againstthem, so every littlething you
candototry and improve their
chances of survival, or raising chicks,
is absolutely worth it,’’ shesays.
‘‘It is an amazing feeling when the
team is responsible for really messing
up arat's day.
‘‘Whether that is through the
trappersand their trapping
programme, or with the dogs.’’

Anotherlargescale solar farm is
being proposedinNorth Canterbury.
Local Waipara residents have taken
to socialmedia to express their alarm
withthe prospect asolar farm could be
established on a100 hectaresite
alongside State Highway 7, to the
north west of thetownship.
The callhas gone out on social
media to let the Hurunui District
Council’s planning department know
whatthey think of any such proposal.
The council has not receiveda
resourceconsent application for a
solar farm.
Council’s Chief strategyand
communityofficerJudith Batchelor
saysthere had been ‘‘discussions
quite sometime ago’’.
But saysitis‘‘speculation’’ about
whatmight be applied foronthe site.
Landclearance works appear to
havealready startedonland on the
Waiparaflat, alongside StateHighway
7, with large trees being felled.
One longtime resident,and a
pioneerofthe now burgeoning wine
industry in theWaipara Valley is
distraught.
JohnMcCaskey says the land has
never been disturbed since the ‘‘days
of the moa’’.
He is calling on the area to be listed
as aSignificant Natural Area to
preserveitasvirgin ground.
Mr McCaskeysays the intrusion of
foreign investorswanting to establish
the solar farm is ‘‘making the locals
blood boil’’.
‘‘Winegrowers in particular will
havesome seriousconcerns,’’ he says.
‘‘Itisobvious that the promoters
haven’tstudiedthe climatehistory of
the area, let alone its vulnerability to
drought and fire.’’
has heard the developers are an
The proposal follows on closely from
It is proposingasolarfarm on an 80
Waimakariri District Council
Vandals cause huge damage
By SHELLEY TOPP
Vandals believed to be driving 4WD
vehicles have torn up newly sown grass
on unfenced land being developed by
Daniel Smith Industries near
Rangiora Airfield.
The vandalism is similar to ongoing
damage being done to Waimakariri
District Council owned land, says the
council’s general manager of
community and recreation, Chris
Brown, and ratepayers are footing the
bill.
‘‘It is areal shame when amenity turf
and other sensitive areas are damaged
by vehicles,’’ he says.
‘‘We get this at times on our sports
fields, neighbourhood reserves and in
the sand dunes on the coast. Iamnot
sure that all those who cause the
damage are aware of just how much it
costs to undertake repairs,’’ he says.
‘‘It is expensive to repair but further
to the financial burden, is the impact
that it can have on wildlife in sensitive
areas.’’
Although bollards ‘‘generally
protect’’ councilowned sports grounds
and neighbourhood reserves from
vandalism, the cost of installing them
is expensive and places another
unwanted burden on ratepayers' funds.
The council is responding to the
problem by working with police in
cases where they have been able to get
licence plate numbers of the vehicles
involved.
‘‘We are also increasing our camera
network with better quality cameras
which can in some instances be moved
to problem sites,’’ Mr Brown says.
Alifelong fascination with model trains
By JOHN COSGROVE
Alifelong fascination with model
railways and electronics has helped
keep aRangiora retiree busy and
occupied in his senior years.
In the garden shed, in aquiet suburb
of Rangiora, Ian Galbraith (82) can often
be found tinkering away with his garden
railway.
Agarden (G) scale railway is a1/25th
scale toy train set, running on tracks laid
around aproperty.
It is much bigger than the usual HO or
Ngauge indoor model train kit sets, but
smaller than the rideon steam and
electric model railways found in
Halswell or on steam train enthusiasts'
sites.
Track gauges are 44mm wide and a
batterypowered diesel locomotive
replica can be 500mm in length.
‘‘In 1970, Istarted in model railways
working with 1/64th scale NZ Railways
trains and rolling stock.’’
But losing sight in one eye forced Ian
to increase the scale of the trains he
worked on.
Following atrip to Canada in 2006, he
was totally bitten by the garden railway
bug after starting with it the year before.
The retired radio and electronics
technician created his first garden
railway on his 14acre farm in
Masterton.
While in Christchurch in 2012, he and
his wife Ann snapped up asmaller
property in Rangiora and Culcreuch
Fold Garden Railway was relocated
there.
Ian had always been akeen scratch
builder, making Meccano toys, and slot
cars before the train bug bit.
‘‘There was alot of expertise in
scratch building in Hawkes Bay at that
time, so Ilearnt alot.’’
He constructs the trains, rolling stock
and buildings adorning his garden
railway from base materials such as
plastic sheets and wood.
He then discovered 3D printing from
his son Sean who works in the aerospace
industry.
‘‘I studied technical drawing at high
school and loved it.
‘‘Using Auto Cad programs Ilearned
how to design the parts Ineeded to print
out to make the buildings and scale train
carriages.’’
His first creation was aGisborne tram.
With help from the museum there,
who provided him with some drawings,
he designed and printed it out on his 3D
printer.
He then went on to design and print
out all the components needed to make
replica houses, train stations, atoilet or
two, avariation on aChristchurch Tram,
churches and many other bits and
pieces used to adorn his 75metre long
layout.
railway which winds its way around his
garden.
‘‘Usually, after Ihave done all the
design work, it takes about 48 hours to
print out all the parts.’’
Once word got around the small
garden railway community, Ian’s skills
became sought after.
‘‘There are 11 garden railway layouts
in Canterbury with four in Rangiora,
and soon everyone was knocking on my
door to help them out.
‘‘It’s just about asecond career for
me,” Ian says.
While he usually only has aphoto to
look at, Ian says he can make scale
buildings that suit any sized garden
railway layout.
‘‘Having the facility to draw it and
then print it 3D has helped many of my
friends out with replacement parts for
trains or carriages that would usually be
very expensive to import, if they could
find them.’’
Culcreuch (pronounced Cull Cruick)
Fold (asmall farm)Garden Railway was
named as ahomage to Ian’s ancestors,
who once owned Culcreuch Castle, till
the late 1700s. It’s still there today, near
Loch Lomond in Scotland.
Chairs for the Kaiapoi River
By SHELLEY TOPP
Four chairs painted by
Waimakaririartists Christine
Watton, Ruby Whitty, Paul
Smith and Cheryl Muirson,
will be auctioned to raise
money for conservationwork
on the Kaiapoi River.
The auction willbepart of
The Chair Kaiapoi exhibition
to be held at the Art on the
Quay Gallery in the Kaiapoi
Library.
The unusual exhibition is
the brainchild of Kaiapoi
upholstererNigel Cook, who
has apassion for chair design.
His idea for the exhibition
came about aftervisiting
galleriesinMilan,Korea,
Australia and the United
States.
‘‘We were surprised to see
areas just devotedtochairs.
Thereismuch interest in
including designand art
together so Ihope we can
achieve this at the Kaiapoi
exhibition,’’ Nigel says.
Althoughhewas initiallya
bit nervous about his idea for
The Chair Kaiapoi he need
not have worried becausethe
firstpersonhespoke to about
it was Kaiapoimultimedia
artist MarkLarsen who liked
the concept.
Two days later he had a
prototype for the exhibition
all set to go.
‘‘I feel so luckypeople have
got behindthe idea,’’ Nigel
says
The Chair Kaiapoi
exhibition will include work
from 28 contributors and
another‘‘20 or so’’ who have
been working with Nigel on
chair design at his upholstery
workshops.
‘‘The event has many parts,’’
he says.
There is the four chairs to
be auctioned, then there are
three other artists creating
items from dismantled chair
parts, and others who have
createdtheirversion of art
with the chair theme.
Anotherpart of the
exhibition involves chairs
that tell astory including The
Murder Chair, which is said to
move around the room on its
own.
‘‘My contribution is called
Rising Fromthe Ashes,’’
Nigel says.
‘‘When SuttonsKaiapoi
Last year42schools made the national
final and competed over three daysfor the
top prizes.
Their assignment is fourfold. First, a
challenge is posed.The InnovationProject
problem is usually social or
environmental.
Last yearthe schoolteam detailedhow
to use ‘‘Poo Power” to alleviate the smoke
generated by burning fossilfuels to create
energy.
This year the challengeishow to use
technologyand the arts to help engage
othersorincrease participation in what
they lovetodo.
They have to thinkupacreativesolution
to the challenge and present theirideas to
ajudging panel.
The secondelementisRobot Design.
The childrenhave to build aLEGO Robot
and show howthey tested and improved
their robot and program,plus detail
everyone’s contributions.
The third element of the competition is
coding. The LEGO robotmust work
autonomously on afloor mat while
followingaroute to achieve specific tasks.
The lastelement is how wellthey follow
the core valuesofteamwork and
communication.
TeammemberCharlieLawrence (aged
12),says the hardest part is makingsure
the robot startswhereitissupposed to,
otherwise, it all goes wrong.
‘‘Ifyou start in the wrong place it makes
the whole taskvery hard to complete,
especially if thereare multiple tasks to
do.’’
Sam Gilmore (aged 12) says the robot
doesn’t alwaysdowhat it should do, and go
where it should.
Fellow teammate Flynn Sole (aged 13)
saysthey only havetwo minutes and 30
seconds to achieve all the goals of the
roboticschallenge making it very stressful.
‘‘I love coding, my brothers and sisters
haveall doneit, and it’s agreatchallenge,
but it’svery nervewracking at the
competitions.’’
Flynn’s father DeanSole, is the coach of
the team and says Kaiapoi NorthSchool
was an earlyadaptor of codingclasses.
He says it’sgreat for the childrenasit
teachesthem all about technology,being
creative thinkers and problemsolving.
something we will continue withinthe
future,’’ Ms Williamsonsays.
‘‘It was afun andexciting event, and
Meeting over Clarence Bridge ‘useful’
By BRENDON MCMAHON,
Local democracy reporter
Ameeting has been heldatthe request of
Te RūnangaoKaikōura with affected
residents and the Kaikōura District
Council around the prolonged
replacement of the WaiauToa/Clarence
River bridge.
Council has planned to replace the
inlandGlen Alton bridgedestroyed by
the November 2016 earthquake with a
new bridge costing$13.5million.
But the clock is tickingwith asunset
clauseonthe NZ Transport Agency
(Waka Kotahi)fundingatthe end of 2025.
And gaining consent for anew bridge
500m downstream from the old has been
achallengefor council—seven years on
from the 2016 earthquakethe rūnanga
remainopposed to any interference with
the riverbed to enable the bridge to be
built.
In the meantime, Clarence Valley
residents are left vulnerable to isolation
due to heavy rainevents and withnoreal
alternativeroute.
Council chief executive WillDoughty
told the July 26 meeting an opportunity
had arisen in the pastmonth —atthe
request of the rūnanga —tocome
together including residents in the area
affected by the lossofthe old bridge.
‘‘It was auseful meeting,’’ Mr Doughty
said.
‘‘It was at the rūnanga’sinstigation.
There was conversations around(bridge)
location and there was discussion that
the original bridge was built in the right
place.”
Options and the various iterations for a
replacement since 2016 wereonthe
table.
‘‘It’sbeen going on for seven years –it’s
avery, very complex solution up there.’’
Mr Doughty notedthat in the context of
the postearthquake aggrading effects on
the river bed and the altered channel
structure finding asolution had not been
easy.
‘‘If it was easy, wewould have done it,’’
he said.
The meeting was held at the council
chambers as another function precluded
it being staged at the marae.
‘‘We tookthe opportunity to talk to the
people on the other side, around the
rūnanga’srequest to talktothose
affected,’’ he toldcouncil.
It had been“an opportunity”but it did
not mean anything mightbesubstantially
resolved yet.
Mr Doughty said the rūnanga was “still
opposedtoany new bridgeacrossthe
These included“limited notification
of potential litigation had come up
aroundthe project.
Mr Doughtysaid there was no mention
however council had put out “minimum
environmental and cultural impacts on
the riverbed during construction.
Sports teams take on
acolourful new look
By JOHN COSGROVE
Woodend School’s sports teamsfaced
a big problemlast year.
With over450 pupils, every time the
teams ran out on to a playing field or
court to compete,the children wore
manydifferent variations of the
school's official sports uniform.
PrincipalAndrew Retallick says
manypupils hadoutgrown or worn out
their sports vests or tops, and they
needed an update.
‘‘The school is growingrapidly and
we found we didn't haveenough tops
for our basketball and football teams
during termsthreeand four last year.
‘‘Children werewearing all sorts of
versions of school sports tops or none
at all,even using their school
uniforms, so we decidedto do
something about it.’’
Because of the initial high cost
associated withoutfitting the
children, Andrew wenttothe
communityand askedlocal businesses
to consider sponsoring 100 basketball
vests and 100 jerseys.
Mr Retallick saysthey were a bit
overwhelmed by the responsefrom
businesses in their community.
‘‘It wasamazing the response we
received.’’
He says13local businesses replied
❛It was amazing the response
we received.❜
—Andrew Retallick,Woodend School principal
and one business,Generation Home,
offered to sponsor the $9000 project as
a major sponsor.
‘‘Our parents would have had to
undertake a lot of sausages sizzles and
raffles to raise the amountneeded, so
we are extremelygrateful to
Generation Homesfor sponsoring the
lot.’’
Generation Homes ownerNadja
Beker says the companyhas strong ties
with the school and they were proud to
supportthe community in Woodend.”
‘‘Now we can kit out all ourstudents
and teams,’’ says Mr Retallick.
At the school assembly last Friday
morning, senior pupils modelled the
new uniformsfor all to see.
‘‘Welooked at threedifferent
designsbefore selecting one that best
displayed the culturalnarrative of our
school.’’
Mr Retallick says all thechildren
knowabout theschools cultural
journey fromthe lagoons to the
mountains, andthis new design
reflected it well.
Thoroughbreds second chance
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Thoroughbred horses are being given a
second chance at life thankstothe efforts
of aSwannanoa horse lover.
Lisa WilsonofPinoaksPark has
rehomed 110 horses in the past year.
‘‘If Icould do more, it would be great,’’
says Lisa.
‘‘Butour facilitiesare abit too small,’’
she says.Itisalso abit of afinancial
wrangle.
Whiletechnically she is not in the game
to make aprofit, by the time she pays
others to giveher ahand withthe horses
because it is ‘‘more than aoneperson job’’,
feedsthem, gets therefeet tidied up, and
then sells ahorsefor between $500 to
$1500, there is not alot of money in it.
‘‘I do it because Ilove doing it, ‘‘ says
Lisa.
Lisa is one of 11 throughoutNew
Zealand rehoming thoroughbreds, backed
by the racing industry.
She began rehoming horsesafter
immigrating to New Zealand14yearsago,
and the New Zealand Racingindustry
created aprogramme to lookafter the
welfare of horsesonce theirracing days
came to an end.
‘‘TheNew Zealand racing industry is all
aboutthe welfare of horses.
‘‘I veteveryone that comes to me
wanting ahorse because if they get intothe
wronghands it is not great,’’ she says.
Thoroughbred horses are skilled and
versatile, and are sought after as sport
horses, eventing, showing, or just as ahack
to ride and enjoy, says Lisa.
She sayspoloisabig area where
thoroughbreds are sought.
‘‘There is alot of people around the
NorthCanterbury regionwho play polo
and know me now,and they come straight
to me for their mounts,’’ she says.
She is proud there is afew of thehorses
she has rehomed doingwell in the world of
eventing, and winning classes.
Lisa hasalifestyle block and leases
further land across the road. She doesn’t
have an arena and spendsalot of time, and
petrol, on taking horsestodifferent arenas
around the area.
This worked‘‘in away’’, giving horses
different experiences, but took up alot of
time.
She is on the lookout formore land, and
often wonders if people who buy alifestyle
block becausethey love thehouse, ponder
what to do with the horsefacilitiesthat
might come with it.
‘‘I wouldlove to growand expand.
doesn’t do that.
‘‘He is alovely horse, but avery sloppy
track worker who definitely sharpens up
on raceday.’’
Vanderbilt was broken in by Kyle and
began racing as athreeyearold, at
Addington Raceway on June 18.
He quickly caught the eye of potential
buyers with an impressive run to finish
fourth, after drawing one but shying at
the barrier tape then galloping and
losing considerable ground.
He followed up with another
impressive run, at Addington again, to
finish third before his sale was finalised.
After purchasing Vanderbilt the
Camerons sold shares in him to Lindsay
and Sharon Marsh, of Woodend, Murray
Marsh and MaryAnne Glasson, from
Hokitika, Wayne and Jenny Chisnall,
from Amberley, and Wendy Beale from
Waikuku.
Michelle retained a45percent
ownership in the young colt.
‘‘Sharon was gutted when he was sold,
she didn’t want to sell him,’’ Kyle says.
‘‘But they have already booked their
tickets to Perth to see him race there.’’
Sharon says she was disappointed to
see ‘‘Alex’’ sold, but they have another
young horse in work with Kyle, and fully
support the business decision he made
to sell Vanderbilt.
‘‘This sale just confirms to us what we
have always known, that Kyle has agreat
eye for ahorse and does agreat job
breaking them in. He is very gentle.’’
Winter grazing flights
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Most Waimakariri District farmers are
following good winter grazingpractices,
despite the very wet July.
Only fourfarms were spotted duringtwo
flights by EnvironmentCanterbury during
July as needing to make some
improvements.
The flights were made midseason with
fieldstaff and industry representatives on
boardobserving winter grazing in the
district.
Theseflights wereafollowup to two
similar preseasonflightsover the same
regions earlier in the year.
Good paddockpreparationand winter
grazing practices will all help ensurethe
effectsonfreshwater of winter grazing,
especially withthe difficultheavy rain
events.
PrincipalImplementationadvisor,
Farm Systems, Sarah Heddell, says during
the flights they saw stock being excluded
from waterways with good buffers in place.
Also they saw the efforts being made to
put in pugging management, with bales
laid out prior to grazing, along with an
adequate numberoftroughsand feeders
and in more than one case the use of back
fencing.
She saysonmost farms paddocks had
been chosen carefullytoavoid critical
sourceareas, however, where they were
present, good buffers wereevident in most
cases.
‘‘Given the wetweather events we’ve
experiencedover the past couple of
winters, paddock selectioniscrucial to
avoid critical source areas and the
potential overland flow delivering
contaminants to waterways,’’ she says.
Staff will be following up with the four
landowners whereimprovements were
neededtoensure they followed best
practice and that no adverse effects on
freshwater occurred.
As part of the followup, staffwill also
ensurethat farms requiringaresource
consent for intensive winter grazing are on
track to apply andget consent for the
operation.
‘‘We will also be contactingfarmers
where we have seensome really positive
practices, especially those identified that
have made considerable improvements
after followup in the 2022 winter season,’’
Ms Heddellsays.
‘‘We have seen some reallygood
practices beingimplemented by alot of
farmers. We alsowant to remindthem to
make sure that theyare meeting the new
they preparefor winter 2024.’’
M.bovis milestone reached
Reaching apoint where there is no
infections and no properties under
investigation is asignificant milestone
in efforts to eradicate M.bovis, says
Wayne Langford, Federated Farmers
President .
‘‘Federated Farmers is cautiously
optimistic that we’ve now turned a
corner in the Mycoplasma bovis
eradication efforts, but we won’t be sure
until bulk milk testing ramps up again
in spring,’’ Mr Langford says.
Getting to this point was due to the
joint efforts of farmers and rural
communities, and astrong partnership
between the primary sector and
Government.
‘‘It’s been an incredibly challenging
few years for the farming families who
have been infected and rural
communities who have been anxious
about the diseases spread.
‘‘There’s been abig financial cost to
try and eradicate this disease, but
there’s been abig emotional cost too.
‘‘Farmers absolutely love their
animals, so to lose your herd is just
devastating,’’ Mr Langford says.
Farmers who were impacted could
take heart from the announcement
there were no infections, and know it
had not all been for nothing.
‘‘The job’s far from over, but all the
indicators are pointing in the right
direction and we’re making real
progress,’’ he says.
Action on roading call
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon is
calling for action on major roading
projects in the district.
Mr Gordon has welcomed the National
Party’s promise to deliver the promised
Woodend Bypass, while he would like to
see the proposed Rangiora eastern link
road including in this year’s National
Land Transport Programme.
Last week the National Party unveiled
a$24 billion transport package, which
included the Woodend Bypass as ‘‘a road
of national significance’’.
The Woodend Bypass has been in the
pipeline for decades, but has been
stalled as Waka Kotahi New Zealand
Transport Agency has focused on other
transport priorities.
‘‘The Woodend Pegasus area is
growing rapidly and already there is
over 20,000 vehicles passing through
here every day,’’ Mr Gordon said.
‘‘It’s simply not safe for residents,
business owners and school children to
have to contend with heavy vehicles and
traffic at this level.
‘‘Woodend is acommunity divided by
State Highway 1. It is agrowing
community and residents feel divided by
this dangerous stretch of road.’’
The proposed bypass route would turn
east at Pine Acres, north of Kaiapoi,
bypassing Woodend before rejoining the
existing SH1 at the Pegasus roundabout.
Mr Gordon said the council would
continue to advocate strongly for
investment from Waka Kotahi for other
projects in the district.
‘‘There are many pressing road
developments such as areplacement of
Skew Bridge in east Kaiapoi as well as
an eastern Rangiora link road that are
required to accommodate agrowing
population.’’
He said the district was facing
significant growth and these
infrastructure projects were needed to
support planned housing developments.
The eastern link road would provide
another link between SH1 and
Rangiora, and help ease pressure on the
Southbrook business area.
‘‘We are pushing for Waka Kotahi to
listen to councils like Waimakariri and
invest where the need is.’’
At last week’s council meeting,
councillors requested staff to
implement the Rangiora eastern link
road into the draft National Land
Transport Programme.
‘‘We felt it was important that the
Rangiora eastern link be included in the
draft programme for afunding
partnership with Waka Kotahi, Mr
Gordon said.
‘‘At the end of the day if it’s not in
there it can’t be considered.’’
The council would seek $375,000 for
the 2024/25 financial year, $2.7 million in
2025/26 and afurther $325,000 in 2026/27.
The entire project was expected to
cost $35 million.
Land for the eastern link road has
been designated in the proposed
Waimakariri District Plan.
For now the project was in the
programme for construction in 2035.
Home wins
architectural
award
By ROBYN BRISTOW
When the WaiauKaikoura
earthquake damaged an original
1980’s farmhouse beyond repair, its
owners needed anew one.
The replacement, Spotswood
Shed, near Cheviot, has won its
designer, Ben Brady atop
architectural award.
Ben of Linetype Architectural,
won the Regional Award for anew
home between 150 square metres
and 300 square metres at the ADNZ
Resene Architectural Design
Awards held in Christchurch last
week.
The judges said the Tshaped plan
of the home, located in an idyllic
rural setting, ‘‘resolves itself into an
elegant linear wing overlooking
rolling country to the north’’.
‘‘Archetypal shed architecture is
elevated to create asense of
simplicity that belies the form of the
plan.
‘‘Deep overhangs along the north
façade provide solar protection, and
an eastern deck extends the living
space out to asheltered porch,
nicely articulated with screens and
light steel bracing.
‘‘Stainless steel sliding screens
allow the control of the low setting
sun into the building and create a
beautiful, dappled atmosphere
within. Deep wall colours and
vintage timber hues reinforce an
eclectic aesthetic given to the
interiors.’’
Art for Art’s Sake ... Rangiora artist Ivan Button with one of his six paintings, done in the
style of Jackson Pollock, which were commissioned for display in the Conway building in
Rangiora’s Conway Lane.
PHOTO: SHELLEY TOPP
Art installations in
Conway Building
By SHELLEY TOPP
Six paintings by Rangiora’s Ivan Button,
done in the style of the lateJackson
Pollock, havebeen installed in
Rangiora's Conway Building.
The owners of the building in Conway
Lane commissioned Ivan to provide
artwork for the walls in the corridors
and foyer of the upstairs space, and he
responded with six large paintings
which are all for sale.
Ivan first encountered the American
abstract expressionist’s art duringthe
early 1990’s and was ‘‘decidedly
impacted’’bythe visual command of
Pollock's‘drip’’era of work done during
the decade between 1947 and 1957.
During the last two or three years,
afteramore intensive studyofPollock’s
work,Ivan decidedto‘‘mimic and
hopefully capture’’ the Pollock style.
‘‘The objectiveistocelebrate the
incredible discoveryofPollock’s
expressionism,where he made no
pretence to tellastory or convey any
political message, simply to enjoythe
spontaneous arrival and impact of
paint, with its colour and diverse tonal
ranges, striking the canvas,’’ Ivansays.
Although Pollock’s workinitially
attracted amixed reaction from art
critics, at the time of his death, in 1956,
he was widely considered to be one of
the 20thcentury’smost influential
artists.
Fifty yearsafter he died one of his
paintings,Number 5, 1948 –sold for
$140 million,which was the highest
price ever paid for apainting at that
time.
Ivan puts his own unique touchinto
his JacksonPollockstyle paintings, by
takingasmall step away fromthe ‘‘drip
technique’’ to add tiny handpainted
dots in contrasting colourstoeach of his
paintings.
Ivan’sartwork can also be seenatthe
Windsor Gallery, at 386 St Asaph St, in
Christchurch.
Council Launches New Look Website
Waimakariri District Council has unveiled its new
look website which has been designed to enhance
user experience.
The Council’s Communication and Engagement
Manager, Alistair Gray, says, “We’ve upgraded our
website template and used this as an opportunity
to give our digital front counter afresh, new look.
“Every year the Council website receives over
400,000 visits, so it’s important that it works well
for residents as they undertake different tasks
throughout the year such as checking opening
hours, applying for consents or licences, searching
information, payingfor services and more.
“Straight away people will notice the new look of the
home page –it’s cleaner and more streamlined –
and the site architecture has been designed based
on resident feedback. We’ve also kept the most
popular links at the top of the home page and
ensured the search functionality is available
throughout the site.”
The Council website was last updated in 2015 and
the redevelopment has been undertaken within the
existing budget. So, what’s new?
• A new, fresh look and feel
• It’s been designed with the user in mind and
meets accessibility guidelines
• The menu navigation is simpler and it’s easier for
residents to find what they’re looking for
• Search is enhanced and predictive
• Over time we’ll be adding more content and
taking on board customer feedback toimprove
the website even more.
“The website is akey customer portal for the
Council and our aim is to make it as simple and
effective for people tofind what they’re looking for.
“These changes are part of an ongoing series of
upgrades planned over the coming year to improve
the digital experience for residents while they’re
doing business with the Council.”
