Selfless service recognised at awards<br />
Selfless service thatquietlycontributes<br />
continues to makeHurunui adistrict that<br />
flourishes.<br />
HurunuiMayor Marie Black ,who<br />
officiatedatthe HurunuiCommunity<br />
Awardsrecently, saidthe awards<br />
acknowledgemembersofthe district who<br />
were‘‘quiet’’ heroes whohad given<br />
exceptional service in the Hurunui<br />
providing forcommunitiesinmany ways.<br />
Thisyear’s awards demonstratedthat<br />
age is no barrier to service.<br />
The Special Mayoral presentation was<br />
awarded to JohnStopford, who, at 97<br />
years of age,has notslowed down in<br />
makinghis community abetter place,<br />
serving witharange of organisations.<br />
‘‘John is still involvedindelivering and<br />
installing equipment requiredbythe<br />
elderly and infirm in theirhomes,’’ Mrs<br />
Blacksaid.<br />
‘‘At the ageof97, he is aprime example<br />
of community service’’.<br />
Provingthatvolunteering starts young,<br />
the recipient of the Youth Volunteer<br />
Awardwas Timothy Brown.<br />
Timothy was recognised for supporting<br />
his fellowyouth throughhis volunteering<br />
contributions with Inspire Church<br />
Amberley as aYouthLeader,where he<br />
has great rapport with thecommunity,<br />
Youthcouncillor Will Munsey said.<br />
The Volunteering forYouthAward<br />
went to Craig Ritchie,inrecognition of<br />
his outstanding support of youth as a<br />
mentor withthe Hurunui Community<br />
Driver MentorProgramme.<br />

workand play.<br />

Robinson ReserveAdvisory Group (revegetation<br />
of areas at Gore Bay) and the<br />
<strong>North</strong>ern Pegasus BayCoastcare group<br />
(complete plantingofawalking/cycling<br />
track at Leithfield Beach andexpand the<br />
predatortrapping programme at<br />
Ashworth Beach ponds).<br />
The HurunuiHeritage Awardwas<br />
awardedtothe Weka PassRailway Inc, to<br />
assist withthe complete restoration to<br />
runningconditionofpassenger carriage<br />
A1720, built in 1931; andPort Robinson<br />
Informed Citizens Inc, for an information<br />
board on thehistoric importance and<br />
uniquecharacter of Limestone Reserve<br />
in Gore Bay.<br />
The guest speaker wasHurunui<br />
DistrictCouncil’sPrincipalGovernance<br />
Advisor, GrahamSutherland, whospoke<br />
on his adventures taking part in Canada’s<br />
YukonRiverQuest,one of the world’s<br />
most challengingmarathon paddleraces.<br />
