Hurunui District Library in Amberley<br />

Zealand andoverseas.<br />

Surfershavebeen comingtocatch a<br />

wavesince the1960s, making surfers<br />

someofthe town’searliesttourists.<br />

‘‘Surfershavehelpedshape,and<br />

continue to influence, the social fabric,<br />

cultureand economic life in<br />

Kaikōura,’’ Museummanager<br />

Stephanie Lange said.<br />

‘‘However, their stories aremostly<br />

untold, andtheir impactlargely<br />

unrecognised.<br />

‘‘We want to highlight someofthose<br />

stories as wellasexplore thescience<br />

involvedincreating our worldfamous,<br />

surfablewaves.<br />

‘‘It is prettyfascinatingstuff,’’ she<br />

Theexhibition will delve into the<br />

historyofsurfing in Kaikōura, while<br />

also encompassing the wider topics of<br />

oceanography,environment, Te Ao<br />

Māori, and theinterconnectionofthese<br />

elements.<br />

Kaikōura Museum is workingwith<br />

NIWA, anduniversity researchers, on<br />

the scientificelementsofsurfing.<br />

To give the exhibition itslocal<br />

flavour andfocus, Stephaniesaidthe<br />

museumiskeen to hear fromanyone<br />

withstories, photos, film footage or any<br />

other items thatwill helptellthe<br />

stories of surfing in Kaikōura.<br />
