Thoroughbreds second chance<br />

Thoroughbred horses are being given a<br />
second chance at life thankstothe efforts<br />
of aSwannanoa horse lover.<br />
Lisa WilsonofPinoaksPark has<br />
rehomed 1<strong>10</strong> horses in the past year.<br />
‘‘If Icould do more, it would be great,’’<br />
says Lisa.<br />
‘‘Butour facilitiesare abit too small,’’<br />
she says.Itisalso abit of afinancial<br />
wrangle.<br />
Whiletechnically she is not in the game<br />
to make aprofit, by the time she pays<br />
others to giveher ahand withthe horses<br />
because it is ‘‘more than aoneperson job’’,<br />
feedsthem, gets therefeet tidied up, and<br />
then sells ahorsefor between $500 to<br />
$1500, there is not alot of money in it.<br />
‘‘I do it because Ilove doing it, ‘‘ says<br />
Lisa.<br />
Lisa is one of 11 throughoutNew<br />
Zealand rehoming thoroughbreds, backed<br />
by the racing industry.<br />
She began rehoming horsesafter<br />
immigrating to New Zealand14yearsago,<br />
and the New Zealand Racingindustry<br />
created aprogramme to lookafter the<br />
welfare of horsesonce theirracing days<br />
came to an end.<br />
‘‘TheNew Zealand racing industry is all<br />
aboutthe welfare of horses.<br />
‘‘I veteveryone that comes to me<br />
wanting ahorse because if they get intothe<br />
wronghands it is not great,’’ she says.<br />
Thoroughbred horses are skilled and<br />
versatile, and are sought after as sport<br />
horses, eventing, showing, or just as ahack<br />
to ride and enjoy, says Lisa.<br />
She sayspoloisabig area where<br />
thoroughbreds are sought.<br />
‘‘There is alot of people around the<br />
<strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong> regionwho play polo<br />
and know me now,and they come straight<br />
to me for their mounts,’’ she says.<br />

moment.They onlylike the smaller<br />
thoroughbreds, and Idon’t get small too<br />
often.’’<br />
She is proud there is afew of thehorses<br />
she has rehomed doingwell in the world of<br />
eventing, and winning classes.<br />
Lisa hasalifestyle block and leases<br />
further land across the road. She doesn’t<br />
have an arena and spendsalot of time, and<br />
petrol, on taking horsestodifferent arenas<br />
around the area.<br />
This worked‘‘in away’’, giving horses<br />
different experiences, but took up alot of<br />
time.<br />
She is on the lookout formore land,and<br />
often wonders if people who buy alifestyle<br />
block becausethey love thehouse, ponder<br />
what to do with the horsefacilitiesthat<br />
might come with it.<br />
‘‘I wouldlove to growand expand.<br />
‘‘But it is awesome, and Iamliving the<br />
dream.’’<br />
