Whispers of wood: unveil<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sculptor’s<br />

odyssey through timber<br />

tep <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> world of sculptor Klaus<br />

Metz Bildhauer, whose artistic journey<br />

began <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> picturesque town of Bad<br />

Brückenau <strong>in</strong> 1968. From <strong>the</strong> tender age of<br />

16, Klaus discovered his passion for wood<br />

sculpt<strong>in</strong>g and set forth on a path that would<br />

lead him to become a celebrated artist.<br />

His artistic odyssey commenced with a<br />

three-year apprenticeship under <strong>the</strong> mentorship<br />

of <strong>the</strong> esteemed wood sculptor, Günter<br />

Metz, from 1984 to 1987. Young Klaus’s dedication<br />

and talent shone through as he secured<br />

<strong>the</strong> title of National W<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wood<br />

sculpt<strong>in</strong>g trade <strong>in</strong> 1987.<br />

Fuelled by his thirst for knowledge and artistic<br />

growth, Klaus enrolled at <strong>the</strong> Academy of<br />

F<strong>in</strong>e Arts <strong>in</strong> Nuremberg <strong>in</strong> 1990, specializ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> sculpture. Dur<strong>in</strong>g his time at <strong>the</strong> academy,<br />

he showcased exceptional promise, earn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

recognition and praise as a prize w<strong>in</strong>ner at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Danner competition <strong>in</strong> 1991.<br />

A turn<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> Klaus’s artistic journey occurred<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1993 when he was appo<strong>in</strong>ted as<br />

a master student by Prof. Wilhelm Uhlig, an<br />

honor that fur<strong>the</strong>r solidified his place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

world of sculpture.<br />

Beyond <strong>the</strong> artistic realm, Klaus’s personal<br />

life took a delightful turn <strong>in</strong> 1994 as he tied<br />

<strong>the</strong> knot with fellow artist Heike Maria Metz,<br />

form<strong>in</strong>g a beautiful partnership <strong>in</strong> both life<br />

and art.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce 1996, Klaus has been grac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

world as a freelance sculptor, lend<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

creative vision to various projects. His work<br />

has not gone unnoticed, with accolades like<br />

<strong>the</strong> “Rhönsalon” prize <strong>in</strong> 2002 and 2005 from<br />

<strong>the</strong> prestigious Kunststation Kle<strong>in</strong>sassen.<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> crown<strong>in</strong>g achievements of his<br />

career came <strong>in</strong> 2007 when Johann received<br />

<strong>the</strong> art prize of <strong>the</strong> Hugo and Elly Götz Foundation<br />

<strong>in</strong> Würzburg. This recognition fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

cemented his position as a master sculptor<br />

of exceptional talent.<br />

In 2008, Johann embarked on a new chapter<br />

by establish<strong>in</strong>g his own studio, provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

him with <strong>the</strong> ideal space to create and br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his artistic visions to life. The follow<strong>in</strong>g year<br />

marked <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>auguration of <strong>the</strong> studio with a<br />

grand exhibition, showcas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> culm<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

of years of artistic exploration.<br />

Throughout his career, Johann’s sculptures<br />

have found <strong>the</strong>ir way <strong>in</strong>to public spaces,<br />

enrich<strong>in</strong>g communities with his art. From<br />

<strong>the</strong> “Way of <strong>the</strong> Cross” <strong>in</strong> St. Josef, Hausen,<br />

to <strong>the</strong> enchant<strong>in</strong>g “Frog K<strong>in</strong>g” and “Puss <strong>in</strong><br />

Boots” on <strong>the</strong> fairy tale trail <strong>in</strong> Hünfeld, his<br />

work <strong>in</strong>vites <strong>the</strong> audience to immerse <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

<strong>in</strong> stories told through wood and<br />

bronze.<br />

Klaus’s artistic journey has been peppered<br />

with exhibitions across galleries and<br />

art spaces. From his early exhibitions at<br />

<strong>the</strong> North Bavarian Art Exhibition <strong>in</strong> Bad<br />

Königshofen to more recent showcases at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Kunsthalle Schwe<strong>in</strong>furt, his work has<br />

graced <strong>the</strong> walls of numerous esteemed establishments.<br />

The year 2018 brought forth ano<strong>the</strong>r moment<br />

of triumph as Klaus acquired “Kolkrabe”<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Barbara Brockhard Foundation for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Kunsthalle Schwe<strong>in</strong>furt, mark<strong>in</strong>g a significant<br />

milestone <strong>in</strong> his career. His partnership<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Triennale IV Kunsthalle Schwe<strong>in</strong>furt<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r solidified his position as a significant<br />

figure <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> contemporary art scene.<br />

As we step <strong>in</strong>to <strong>2023</strong>, Klaus Metz Bildhauers<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ues to leave an <strong>in</strong>delible mark on<br />

<strong>the</strong> world of sculpture. His unique ability to<br />

brea<strong>the</strong> life <strong>in</strong>to wood and bronze sets him<br />

apart as an artist of unparalleled skill and<br />

vision.<br />

Klaus’s sculptures capture <strong>the</strong> essence of<br />

life and emotion, <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g audiences to step<br />
