Rogue `baiters cause
problems in red zone
PHOTO: GEORGE HEARD/NZ HERALD
FRUSTRATING: Rule-abiding whitebaiters are frustrated by what is happening in the red zone.
• By Emily Ansell
SOME whitebaiters are
knocking down fences and
camping illegally in the red
zone, frustrating authorities
and law-abiding fishers.
Two weeks into the new
season, the city council has
been dealing with whitebaiters
forcing entry and parking up
illegally along the Ōtākaro
Avon River in tents and selfcontained
buses.
Two fences were broken at
Locksley Ave and River Rd in
the first few days.
Dallington Residents
Association chairwoman Bebe
Frayle said the area already had
a problem with unauthorised
vehicles “hooning round” in the
red zone, which she says invites
more trouble.
“People see that there are
people in there over the fences,
and then it just encourages
other people to do it as well.
“It creates a bit of a free-forall,
which is not great.”
One whitebaiter, who doesn’t
want to be named, said this is
the kind of behaviour that gives
the rest of them a bad rap.
He said the rules are there
for a reason and wants other
whitebaiters to be fair about it.
“Breaking down fences and
setting up full-on campsites is a
step too far.
“And it annoys the rest of us.
That’s where fights between
whitebaiters start, and again
that just makes us look bad.”
New
Brighton
library
to close
for seven
weeks
IMPROVEMENTS to the beach
front library in New Brighton will
mean the facility is to be closed
from September 24 - November
13.
The refurbishment includes
layout changes, flooring repairs
and internal painting, as well as
soft furniture updates, window
treatments and a renovation of
the bathroom in the foyer of the
building.
The city council is not planning
to install temporary library
facilities in the area and is instead
encouraging library users to
visit Parklands Library, where all
items previously on hold in New
Brighton will be redirected.
The seven-week refurbishment
won’t impact the on-site cafe,
Salt on the Pier, although visitors
will not be able to enter via the
main library foyer, a city council
spokesperson said.
Once the refurbishments are under
way, all items in New Brighton
Library will be unavailable to the
library network and library staff
will be temporarily reassigned to
other council libraries.
All library events have been
cancelled for the duration of
the closure and weekly sessions
will restart after the renovations
are completed.
New look Valentines open now
Hornby restaurant offers more choices and familiar favourites
Thousands of Christchurch families will
have fond memories of enjoying the tasty
food and friendly vibe of Valentines buffet
restaurant, which was located for many
years in the central city.
A New Zealand-wide franchise
operation, the business went through many
changes over the years, then with new
owners taking over the company six years
ago, it gained a new momentum.
A third franchise was set up in Auckland,
its Rotorua restaurant reopened, and in July
2019, Valentines Christchurch opened at a
new location – Chalmers Street, Hornby.
As company director Ron Lal explains,
Valentines has a rich history in Kiwi culture
and they wanted to retain that feeling of
nostalgia, but with some new concepts
added to the mix.
“We wanted to offer our customers a new
experience that’s up with the times, and
with a modern twist on hospitality.
“Customers have a lot more choice of
food now,” he says, “for example you can
choose your own meat, which will be
cooked individually for you. We offer a big
selection of dishes, seafood and desserts,
and of course there are the familiar
favourites that the children love, like the
chocolate fountain and an endless supply of
ice-cream.
“We want to wow the customers and
at the same time we want to create that
nostalgic Valentines feel.”
The Valentines tradition of a free meal
for a customer on their birthday has been
upgraded to a celebratory birthday treat
and, of course, with the famous birthday
song being sung by staff, too. Families are
also invited to take advantage of the school
holiday special from time to time. During
the holidays, one child under the age of
eight gets a free lunch if accompanied by a
full paying adult. (T’s & C’s apply.)
Valentines has always been seen as a
100 per cent family restaurant, a tradition
that the new Valentines team is keen to
continue, but Valentines is also a restaurant
for everyone, from families to couples,
to friends getting together to celebrate a
special occasion.
Situated in the heart of the Hornby
shopping precinct, not only is Valentines
the ideal place for people from the Hornby
community to enjoy tasty food and a warm,
friendly vibe, it also employs local staff,
who are treated well and therefore enjoy
working there and giving their customers
the best possible service.
Valentines is open seven days a week,
from 10am till late. Outside the buffet
times they also do the popular Valentines
Shareboxes, which offer a range of
amazing dishes.
$120k ‘discount’ on retro house
• By Nikki Preston
A RETRO home with red
and orange zig-zag carpet
rescued from the Tivoli Theatre
Cathedral Square in the
mid-1990s has sold under the
hammer for $460,000 – $120,000
below its RV.
Just one person bid on the
three-bedroom, two-bathroom
home on Coopers Rd, Burwood.
The auction paused at
$400,000 leaving the owner and
buyer to negotiate a sale behind
closed doors. But after almost
half an hour later the 1960s
property was announced on the
market and sold for $460,000.
The property, which had been
marketed as being “budgetfriendly”,
was bought by a
woman for her family.
Bayleys listing agent Angela
Webb said the mother and
daughter planned to live in it and
slowly renovate it, she said.
“They loved the property and
are really looking forward to
moving in,” she said.
The size of both the home and
the section, as well as the price,
had been big drawcards, Webb
said.
“It’s become harder and harder
to buy affordable properties in
Christchurch. That price bracket
is getting quite swamped out;
there’s a lot of first-home buyers
shopping.”
ART DECO: The carpet was taken from the Tivoli theatre and transported to 58 Coopers
Rd over 30 years ago.
When asked about the unusual
carpet, Webb said: “It’s nothing
like I have ever seen.”
Three people had registered
for the Coopers Rd auction
including two home buyers and
one property trader.
The previous owner had
owned the rental property for
almost three decades and said
she had decided to sell because of
the rising costs facing landlords.
She was happy with the result
and pleased to be able to move
on and look for new investments,
HISTORIC: The
Tivoli Theatre
closed in 1994.
Webb said.
The property was described as
an affordable project and it had
an original kitchen along with
the carpet reclaimed from the
Tivoli Theatre when it closed in
the 1990s.
Long-term tenants of the
property previously embraced
the home’s art deco vibe and
created a different 1950s theme
in every room complete with tea
trolleys and old ashtrays.
“They used to have real tours
through the house showing all
the stuff. They were there for
years and years . . . it was quite
remarkable what they had in
there,” the previous owner said.
The Quiet Hero - The extraordinary life and death of
a Kiwi aid worker in Ukraine by Philip Matthews
Andrew Bagshaw was many things - a genius-level geneticist, keen cricketer and
sailor, private pilot, much-loved son, brother and uncle, as well as a hugely brave
and principled idealist who risked everything to travel from Christchurch to Ukraine
to work as a volunteer aid worker. After seeing the distressing coverage of the
Russian invasion Andrew booked a ticket to Poland in April 2022 and by July he was
in eastern Ukraine. He moved hundreds of people to safety while gaining the respect
of an international team of volunteers.. On 6 Jan2023, Andrew and fellow aid worker
Chris Parry were on a mission in Soledar, trying to rescue an elderly woman, when
they were caught in a Russian attack. Reported missing the following day, their
deaths were confirmed two weeks later.
Don’t Dream It’s Over
The remarkable life of Neil Finn by Jeff Apter
In February 1980, 21-year-old Neil Mullane Finn wrote ‘I Got You,’ which became the
signature song, and the biggest hit, for the Kiwi band Split Enz, which had been cofounded
by Neil’s big brother Tim several years earlier. Over the next five decades, Neil
crafted hit after hit for Split Enz, for his own chart-topping band Crowded House, and
as a solo act. In his spare time, in 2018, he joined international superstars Fleetwood
Mac. Neil has endured his share of challenges. There was massive conflict with
his older brother; the tragic death, by suicide, of close friend and Crowded House
bandmate Paul Hester; and his hardscrabble early days in England with Split Enz,
surviving, but only just, on the dole. Stir in his devout Catholic upbringing, a marriage
to wife Sharon that has somehow lasted more than 40 years - a miracle in the world
of pop music - and the efforts of his sons, Liam and Elroy, to also pursue a career in
music, and the result is one of the most inspiring musical sagas of recent times.
Lions Club roars through 60
years as pride of the east
The Lions
Club of
New
Brighton is
celebrating
its 60th
anniversary
this
month. Club president
Alastair Rankin reports
THE LIONS Club of New
Brighton was chartered
September 9, 1963, sponsored
by Christchurch Host Lions
Club and sworn in by the Lions
District Governor, Sedley Wells.
There were 28 ‘charter members’,
all of whom came from the local
area. They were from a cross
section of businesses and New
Brighton society. The members
were petrol station proprietors,
painters, chemists, cabinet
makers, French polishers and
other professional or trades
folk. They all had one thing in
common, a desire to serve their
community.
To serve their communities,
Lions clubs do projects, either
to raise funds or help someone
in need. All funds raised must
go back into the community by
donating money or donating
equipment. These projects
usually support the international
causes of diabetes, vision,
childhood cancer, hunger,
and the environment, as well
as disaster relief and youth
activities.
In the early days of our history,
Burwood Hospital was getting
established as the New Zealand
Burns Unit and the New Zealand
Spinal Unit. Much of our fundraising
efforts were for special
beds and Roho mattresses. The
Lions Club of New Brighton
also got the hospital bowling
green installed to assist with
rehabilitation.
In the 1970s our member
Frank Mitchell QSM became
district governor for Canterbury,
Marlborough, Nelson and the
West Coast. Frank worked
tirelessly over five years to
establish Camp Quality in New
Zealand, an annual camp of
fun and adventure for children
with cancer. The club is still
very much involved with Camp
Quality today.
One of our members, local
pharmacist Roger Hunt, worked
with our Lions District Cabinet
and the Christchurch Health
Board to set up a heart unit at
Christchurch Hospital. It took
six years but we got there in the
end.
During this period, two of our
members were local business
owners and they were the
driving forces behind the New
Brighton Pier project. The club
ran charity gala events to raise
huge sums of money for the
project.
One of the most outstanding
projects was the annual harness
racing on the beach from South
Brighton Surf Club to the finish
line opposite the Whale Pool.
This was the first weekend of
Cup and Show Week that drew
massive crowds and raised
very large sums of money
to be donated back into the
community. Several of the local
schools were equipped with
computers from those funds.
Immediately after the
earthquakes, the Lions Clubs
International Foundation in
Chicago, United States, donated
$10,00 to the recovery fund to
be used where needed most.
Along with that, our club
provided working teams and free
barbecues to those in need.
Likewise we provided free
barbecues for the Covid-19 Super
Vax Saturday.
It isn’t all about fundraising,
sometimes we help people by
doing projects like stacking their
firewood or rotary hoeing their
garden.
For several years now, we have
given our time freely to traffic
marshalling at Children’s Day
and the Coast to Coast, and we
LIFT: One of the Lions Club
of New Brighton’s biggest
fundraising projects
involved selling and
delivering peastraw and
compost.
Below – The club held a
barbecue for the Covid-19
Super Vax Saturday.
annually provide a water stand at
the City2Surf fun run.
More recently the club has
worked very closely with the
New Brighton Project on events
such as Spring Gala, Kite Day
and the I Love Brighton festival,
as well as providing funding and
manpower for the New Brighton
Christmas Parade.
Our big project for the last
three years has been selling
and delivering peastraw and
compost, which we will be
doing on September 23. As this
is International Cancer Month
the bulk of our proceeds will be
going towards that.
We are currently assisting two
girls from Avonside Girls High
School to attend a voyage on
the Spirit of Adventure for 10
days, and another young lady to
attend a course at the Outward
Bound School at Anakiwa in
Marlborough.
For the environment we are
assisting a young chap with his
community garden project by
providing materials and some
financial support.
The Lions Club of
New Brighton are the
guarantors for his lease with the
city council.
Next month is Diabetes
Month, including the Lions
International project ‘Lap the
Map’ – a walk for diabetes, so
we will be counting the number
of people who walk the pier on a
Saturday to add their paces to the
global map. A huge industrial
foundation is backing this with a
donation.
To celebrate its 60th
anniversary, the Lions Club
of New Brighton held a
cocktail party attended by the
international president, Dr
Patti Hill, from Edmonton,
Canada. President Patti and
myself (president Alastair)
awarded Lion Don MacKay with
a Melvin Jones Fellowship (the
second highest Lions award) and
inducted one new member, then
cut the cake.
Our goal for the near future
is to raise the membership by
five members by the end of June
2026. All you need to become
a Lion is a desire to serve your
community.
Where there’s a need there’s a
Lion.
Call for Girl Guides volunteers
• By Briar Allen
A LACK of volunteer leaders is
affecting the number of girls who
can participate in Girl Guides.
Girl Guides New Zealand
volunteer and programme team
leader Belinda Turnbull said
they have seen a drop of girls
enrolling in Girl Guides because
there has been no real marketing
or push to get more girls to join
the programme.
“The reason for that is because
we cannot offer everyone the
positive experience we know we
can until we get more volunteer
leaders, as we want to be able
to provide a positive and safe
experience for both our leaders
and our girls,” she said.
Turnbull said the drop in
volunteers is due to people’s lives
changing as well as the economy.
“People’s lives change, the
shortage of leaders at the
Northcote unit is due to one
just having a baby, another has
moved overseas and the other
found it overwhelming with
work, study and volunteering.
“But volunteers from other
units have rallied together to
support Northcote while we
recruit new volunteers and
train them. They have all been
working together as a team to
create an experience for the
girls.”
She said the economy is a bit of
a problem, with most households
GUIDING: Girl Guiding New Zealand is wanting more adult volunteers to help lead their
Guide units.
unable to live off of one income.
“Both parents are usually
working and between work
and raising their own kids,
most people don’t have time to
volunteer.”
Turnbull said volunteering
is a great way to give back and
make new connections and
friendships.
“Part of it is also raising our
next generation of girls to be
confident and adventurous.
Volunteers can also gain
development and training
qualifications and first aid from
volunteering.”
Local coordinator and regional
hub coordinator Lisa Milroy has
been volunteering for the past
decade and said she grew up
guiding.
“Guiding has been my life
since I was six years old. I started
in Pippin and Brownie units in
South Waikato as a fresh leader,
I then shifted to Rotorua to start
my nursing training, and ran
a unit there for a year, before
having to step back to focus on
placements. This was such a hard
decision,” she said.
Milroy said she then moved up
to Auckland and found the local
coordinator role perfect and was
in the role for just under a year.
“Then the decision to move
to Christchurch relocated me
once more. I stepped straight
into being the local coordinator
down here in April last year, and
then applied for the regional hub
coordinator position.”
She said she truly believes
volunteering changes you
and that giving back to the
community is one of the greatest
things you can do with your
time.
“I may not donate hundreds
or thousands, but the time I
give, I reap rewards. This is my
space away from home to enjoy
being a woman, enjoy seeing
girls gain skills and grow in their
confidence, and see leaders make
connections, in a world where
that isn’t always easy.”
Milroy said Guides is a
unique opportunity for girls to
reach their potential and have
a safe place to explore, grow
their confidence, find their
passions, discover things that
are important to them, and learn
and exercise responsibility.
“Girls learn better without
having to compete with boys,
and guiding provides exactly
that. In my time as a member I
abseiled, learned to use a bow
and arrow, shoot a BB gun, and
sea kayak. Now I aim for leaders
to get the same experience.”
Last year the city council
ruled whitebaiters were no
longer able to purchase keys to
access fenced areas around the
riverbank.
City council residential red
zone manager Dave Little said
the situation is disappointing,
but he hopes things will
improve.
“It’s probably one of those
situations that we’ll get at the start of the
season, and then our rangers go out and
talk to those individuals . . . we’re hoping
that then they’ll start to even out.”
issue, and those they’ve spoken to have
Frayle (left) said the city
dealing with this situation, but
antisocial and disrespectful
“There are people who are
they’re respectful . . . but there
they want to share their space, they need
to feel safe. – NZ Herald
GIVING BLOOD TO SAVE A LIFE
Recently my Macy and Hannah’s
greyhound gave up their blood to help
save a life, both within days of each other.
The dog needing the blood ended up
with 4 blood transfusions over 10 days
and sadly we couldn’t save her. When a
patient requires a blood transfusion, things
need to happen fast as the patient has lost
too much blood for sustainability of life.
For patients that have lost blood volume,
whole blood or packed red blood cells are
required.
Left: Percy getting
a toy after being a
blood donor.
Below:
Macy gave up
400 mls of blood.
Here she is sedated
for the procedure.
We fairly commonly
see blood loss
anemias with
poisonings like rat
bait, bleeding spleens or ruptured tumours
and trauma like road traffic accidents. Some
of these patients will exhibit weakness,
laboured breathing and wobbliness.
Transfused blood to a dog with a non
regenerative anemia will last 120 days, so it
can stabilise a dog for 2-3 months allowing
diagnostic tests to be completed.
We don’t keep stored fresh blood products
so if we can’t source from the NZL Blood
Bank, we have a few of our own donors
with staff pets.
To become a donor first the dog has to be
healthy, fully vaccinated and parasite free,
not on medications and not had cancer or
chemotherapy in the past. They need to
weight over 25kg and have a PCV over 35%.
Greyhounds are perfect donor dogs for this
reason. We then need to get their blood
type to make sure they are the donor type
( Ideally DEA 1.1 or DEA 1.2 negative). The
recipient dog also needs the same blood
type as the donor and both dogs need to
Last week I operated on my beautiful
14 year old Labrador Lola to remove a
potentially malignant, life threatening
Anal Gland cancer ( I’m still awaiting the
histology results). I took her for a CT scan
at Pacific Radiology to check she was
cancer free elsewhere before embarking
on this major surgery. She flew through
the anaesthetic, even getting a teeth clean
and pedicure before wake up. She is doing
fabulously, taking all her medications
be cross matched at the laboratory, on the
day of the transfusion.
Usually we sedate the donor dog to remove
the blood needed for the patient in need.
We check the donor dogs amount of red
blood cells ( PCV) before we remove 10%
to 15% of the donors blood volume. To
prevent hypovolemia ( low blood volume)
the donor should receive intravenous
fluids (IVF) at the commencement of the
transfusion. A dogs total blood volume is
90mls/kg bodyweight so Macy could give
between 300-400mls blood safely.
The donor blood is given to the patient
in need via the jugular or cephalic vein
through a filtered giving set, which reduces
clots entering the circulation. Blood can
be warmed to body temperature before
administration. Slow blood flow rates
are advised for the first 30 minutes of the
transfusion to detect a possible reaction.
Signs of a transfusion reaction are hives,
intense scratching, vomiting,
fevers, depression, changes
in breathing and heart rates,
convulsions or cardiac arrest.
Luckily I haven’t witnessed
a transfusion reaction ever,
probably because we type
and crossmatch our donors
carefully, and have a nurse
sitting with these patients
observing their vitals.
Transfusion medicine isn’t
common, but if and when you
need to to save a patients life,
your whole team need to be
ready to go fast. Having donor dogs and
cats in the practice we have typed and we
know are healthy saves a huge amount
of time and potentially a life. If you’d like
your dog to be a donor dog then let us
know. You can never have too many blood
donors.
Hyundai Sante Fe hybrid strong and sporty
HYUNDAI’S Sante Fe has joined
the electrification party and
celebrates its arrival by offering
standard and plug-in hybrid
models, with the leap to full
electrification expected in 2024
with the arrival of an all-new
replacement for the current
model.
The Santa Fe is Hyundai’s
longest-running SUV now with
23 years on the clock. In this
time, it’s built a strong following
here, hitting the sweet spot for
many with its 7-seater capability,
spaciousness, and a raft of safety
kit that has helped power it to the
maximum 5-star ANCAP crash
rating.
The Santa Fe is available with
Hyundai’s stalwart 1.6-litre
turbocharged four-cylinder
petrol engine combined with
either a 169kW standard Hybrid
version or a 195kW Plug-in
Hybrid option. The Santa Fe
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Hybrid uses a 44.2kW electric
motor and 1.49kWh lithium-ion
polymer battery, with claimed
fuel consumption figures of
6.3L/100km. The Plug-in Santa
Fe can travel up to 56km on
battery power, perfect for the
daily commutes. This figure is
eclipsed by the 89km you get
with the slightly smaller but more
affordable Mitsubishi Outlander
PHEV.
Prices for the three-model
hybrid range start at $88,990 for
the entry version and a steepish
$99,990 ask on the elite being
evaluated here. For another $10k
you can have this model as a
plug-in hybrid. This is a hefty
premium to pay for plug-in
capability, when there is not
an enormous difference in real
world performance separating it
and the standard hybrid.
An energetic 169kw hybrid
power train in the test vehicle
Incorporating
best motorbuys
www.drivesouth.co.nz
proved surprisingly zesty
compared to the less than
animated performance of some
hybrids, with the test vehicle
especially energetic between
1,500-4,500rpm. This is the rev
sweet spot for ensuring a driving
experience like a good coffee;
smooth, strong, and leaves you
feeling invigorated. Acceleration
is strong for a standard hybrid
and is almost verging on sporty.
A rich vein of torque and the
extra kick of a battery pack
ensures punchy take-offs from
standing starts, and purposeful
mid-range pulling power.
These qualities make light
work of undulating roads and
long energy sapping hill climbs.
Managing this impressive hybrid
petrol electric is an equally
accomplished uprated 6-speed
automatic.
Passenger and load space
is outstanding with every
centimetre of capacity utilized. It
gives its rivals a lesson in smart
interior packaging and space
maximization. Adding a touch of
class to the elite is a full leather
interior and power front seat
adjustment to lock in the perfect
seating position.
I liked the intuitive 8”
touchscreen multimedia system,
incorporating Apple CarPlay &
Android Auto for fully integrated
smartphone functionality. Also
included is wireless smartphone
charging.
A head-up display projects
relevant driving and safety
information directly onto the
windshield. This makes for a
much more relaxing driving
experience, enabling the driver
to keep their eyes on the road,
because now this information is
right under their noses!
The Santa Fe put its best
safety foot forward with driving
assistance technologies including
blind-spot collision warning,
forward collision-avoidance
assist with pedestrian detection,
and lane keeping assist.
There has been a re-work of
the suspension to ensure this
Santa Fe has more control and
less body lean on twisty roads,
or when called on to make
unexpected changes in direction.
A 15mm reduction in ground
clearance over the old model
brings a more composed feel
to the suspension. Through the
bends, it sits noticeably flatter
and is less distracted by uneven
road surfaces, with minimal
lateral vehicle movement from
the rear suspension.
The Santa Fe’s serious off-road
adventuring aspirations are
firmly held in check. It does
a decent enough job and feels
assured traversing reasonably
well-formed tracks.
