New look Valentines open now Hornby restaurant offers more choices and familiar favourites Thousands of Christchurch families will have fond memories of enjoying the tasty food and friendly vibe of Valentines buffet restaurant, which was located for many years in the central city. A New Zealand-wide franchise operation, the business went through many changes over the years, then with new owners taking over the company six years ago, it gained a new momentum. A third franchise was set up in Auckland, its Rotorua restaurant reopened, and in July 2019, Valentines Christchurch opened at a new location – Chalmers Street, Hornby. As company director Ron Lal explains, Valentines has a rich history in Kiwi culture and they wanted to retain that feeling of nostalgia, but with some new concepts added to the mix. “We wanted to offer our customers a new experience that’s up with the times, and with a modern twist on hospitality. “Customers have a lot more choice of food now,” he says, “for example you can choose your own meat, which will be cooked individually for you. We offer a big selection of dishes, seafood and desserts, and of course there are the familiar favourites that the children love, like the chocolate fountain and an endless supply of ice-cream. “We want to wow the customers and at the same time we want to create that nostalgic Valentines feel.” The Valentines tradition of a free meal for a customer on their birthday has been upgraded to a celebratory birthday treat and, of course, with the famous birthday song being sung by staff, too. Families are also invited to take advantage of the school holiday special from time to time. Thursday September 14 2023 3 $120k ‘discount’ on retro house • By Nikki Preston A RETRO home with red and orange zig-zag carpet rescued from the Tivoli Theatre Cathedral Square in the mid-1990s has sold under the hammer for $460,000 – $120,000 below its RV. Just one person bid on the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home on Coopers Rd, Burwood. The auction paused at $400,000 leaving the owner and buyer to negotiate a sale behind closed doors. But after almost half an hour later the 1960s property was announced on the market and sold for $460,000. The property, which had been marketed as being “budgetfriendly”, was bought by a woman for her family. Bayleys listing agent Angela Webb said the mother and daughter planned to live in it and slowly renovate it, she said. “They loved the property and are really looking forward to moving in,” she said. The size of both the home and the section, as well as the price, had been big drawcards, Webb said. “It’s become harder and harder to buy affordable properties in Christchurch. That price bracket is getting quite swamped out; there’s a lot of first-home buyers shopping.” ART DECO: The carpet was taken from the Tivoli theatre and transported to 58 Coopers Rd over 30 years ago. When asked about the unusual carpet, Webb said: “It’s nothing like I have ever seen.” Three people had registered for the Coopers Rd auction including two home buyers and one property trader. The previous owner had owned the rental property for almost three decades and said she had decided to sell because of the rising costs facing landlords. She was happy with the result and pleased to be able to move on and look for new investments, HISTORIC: The Tivoli Theatre closed in 1994. Webb said. The property was described as an affordable project and it had an original kitchen along with the carpet reclaimed from the Tivoli Theatre when it closed in the 1990s. Long-term tenants of the property previously embraced the home’s art deco vibe and created a different 1950s theme in every room complete with tea trolleys and old ashtrays. “They used to have real tours through the house showing all the stuff.
