Thursday September 14 2023 5 Lions Club roars through 60 years as pride of the east The Lions Club of New Brighton is celebrating its 60th anniversary this month. Club president Alastair Rankin reports THE LIONS Club of New Brighton was chartered September 9, 1963, sponsored by Christchurch Host Lions Club and sworn in by the Lions District Governor, Sedley Wells. There were 28 ‘charter members’, all of whom came from the local area. They were from a cross section of businesses and New Brighton society. The members were petrol station proprietors, painters, chemists, cabinet makers, French polishers and other professional or trades folk. They all had one thing in common, a desire to serve their community. To serve their communities, Lions clubs do projects, either to raise funds or help someone in need. All funds raised must go back into the community by donating money or donating equipment. These projects usually support the international causes of diabetes, vision, childhood cancer, hunger, and the environment, as well as disaster relief and youth activities. In the early days of our history, Burwood Hospital was getting established as the New Zealand Burns Unit and the New Zealand Spinal Unit. Much of our fundraising efforts were for special beds and Roho mattresses. The Lions Club of New Brighton also got the hospital bowling green installed to assist with rehabilitation. In the 1970s our member Frank Mitchell QSM became district governor for Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson and the West Coast. Frank worked tirelessly over five years to establish Camp Quality in New Zealand, an annual camp of fun and adventure for children with cancer. The club is still very much involved with Camp Quality today. One of our members, local pharmacist Roger Hunt, worked with our Lions District Cabinet and the Christchurch Health Board to set up a heart unit at Christchurch Hospital. It took six years but we got there in the end. During this period, two of our members were local business owners and they were the driving forces behind the New Brighton Pier project. The club ran charity gala events to raise huge sums of money for the project. One of the most outstanding projects was the annual harness racing on the beach from South Brighton Surf Club to the finish line opposite the Whale Pool. This was the first weekend of Cup and Show Week that drew massive crowds and raised very large sums of money to be donated back into the community. Several of the local schools were equipped with computers from those funds. Immediately after the earthquakes, the Lions Clubs International Foundation in Chicago, United States, donated $10,00 to the recovery fund to be used where needed most. Along with that, our club provided working teams and free barbecues to those in need. Likewise we provided free barbecues for the Covid-19 Super Vax Saturday. It isn’t all about fundraising, sometimes we help people by doing projects like stacking their firewood or rotary hoeing their garden. For several years now, we have given our time freely to traffic marshalling at Children’s Day and the Coast to Coast, and we LIFT: One of the Lions Club of New Brighton’s biggest fundraising projects involved selling and delivering peastraw and compost. Below – The club held a barbecue for the Covid-19 Super Vax Saturday. annually provide a water stand at the City2Surf fun run. More recently the club has worked very closely with the New Brighton Project on events such as Spring Gala, Kite Day and the I Love Brighton festival, as well as providing funding and manpower for the New Brighton Christmas Parade. Our big project for the last three years has been selling and delivering peastraw and compost, which we will be doing on September 23. As this is International Cancer Month the bulk of our proceeds will be going towards that. We are currently assisting two girls from Avonside Girls High School to attend a voyage on the Spirit of Adventure for 10 days, and another young lady to attend a course at the Outward Bound School at Anakiwa in Marlborough. For the environment we are assisting a young chap with his community garden project by providing materials and some financial support. The Lions Club of New Brighton are the guarantors for his lease with the city council. Next month is Diabetes Month, including the Lions International project ‘Lap the Map’ – a walk for diabetes, so we will be counting the number of people who walk the pier on a Saturday to add their paces to the global map. A huge industrial foundation is backing this with a donation. To celebrate its 60th anniversary, the Lions Club of New Brighton held a cocktail party attended by the international president, Dr Patti Hill, from Edmonton, Canada. President Patti and myself (president Alastair) awarded Lion Don MacKay with a Melvin Jones Fellowship (the second highest Lions award) and inducted one new member, then cut the cake. Our goal for the near future is to raise the membership by five members by the end of June 2026. All you need to become a Lion is a desire to serve your community.
