The highest range in North Africa, the High

Atlas has many fertile valleys, snow-covered

peaks, rivers and waterfalls. About an hour’s

drive from Marrakech, the area can be visited

on a day trip or as part of a longer itinerary.

The lush Ourika Valley makes another excellent

day trip from Marrakech, with olive groves,

citrus tree orchards, willows and poplar trees

covering the slopes. Accommodation is in

luxurious converted kasbahs or more basic

local houses.

Home to one of the oldest universities in the

world, Fez is considered to be the intellectual

capital and most imperial of Morocco’s cities,

famed for its labyrinthine souks. The tanneries

are a major highlight; you can watch the

centuries-old process of treating cowhide in

huge vats of dye.

To the west of Fez, Meknes is a prosperous

provincial town, cut in two by the river valley

of the Oued Boufekrane, with varied and busy

souks in its medina.

The start of the Sahara Desert is marked by the

five-kilometre wide and 50-kilometre long band

of sand dunes called Erg Chebbi, with the small

Berber village of Merzouga located on the

fringe. The sand dunes here rise as high as

350 metres.

Explore the otherworldly desert landscapes

in a 4x4 vehicle, and be sure to spend a night

under canvas so you can see the colours of

the sunset and sunrise over the sands.
