COLOMBIA • LATIN AMERICA
Discover Colombia
This beguiling country, largely untouched
by mass tourism, stretches from high
Andean peaks and the lush Amazon basin
to Caribbean and Pacific coastlines. It offers
an intriguing mix of diverse landscapes,
colonial heritage and modernity. Discover
exciting cultural hubs and well-preserved
colonial gems, explore traces of ancient
civilisations, visit a coffee plantation, search
for wildlife in pristine rainforests, relax on
tropical beaches or go whale watching on
the Pacific coast. The Colombians are warm
and most welcoming, quick to dispel any
negative stereotype that may linger from
their past.

Colombia
Bogotá & Surrounds
Villa de Leyva
Vibrant city • Gold Museum • Colonial town of
Villa de Leyva
Bogotá, Colombia’s capital, is home to the Gold
Museum, housing the world’s most complete
collection of ancient gold artefacts. The historic
Candelaria district has colonial heritage, and
a cable car climbs up the Monserrat hill for
panoramic views of the city. To the north, near
the town of Zipaquirá, an amazing cathedral
is built inside an old salt mine, while a threehour
drive away lies the well-preserved
colonial town of Villa de Leyva, with its cobbled
streets lined with crimson bougainvillea and
whitewashed houses.

Cartagena
Cartagena & the Caribbean
Beautiful fortified town • Characterful
colonial hotels • Turquoise seas
The colourful Caribbean port of Cartagena is
a true colonial gem best explored on foot. The
UNESCO-protected walled city enchants visitors
with well-preserved Spanish fortifications,
historic convents, beautiful churches, winding
alleyways, grand mansions with overhanging
flower-filled balconies, and small, attractive
plazas. Stay in a restored colonial house and
take a day trip to Rosario Islands. Alternatively,
venture further north to Tayrona National Park
or fly to the laid-back island of Providencia,
near the coast of Nicaragua.
The lush countryside of Colombia’s coffee
region is dotted with small plantations and
picturesque villages. Relax in a delightful
hacienda (converted country house) and learn
about century-old traditions of coffee growing.
Native wax palm trees, the tallest in the world,
grow in the verdant Cocora Valley, while the
cloud forest of Los Nevados National Park is
home to orchids and hummingbirds.
Medellín social transformation tour
Medellín, once a troubled city, has
blossomed into a shining example of social
transformation and urban regeneration.
Visit innovative projects in once marginalised
neighbourhoods, take in some of the graffti
art at Comuna 13, or join in a cookery class
with people from the local community.
San Agustín’s archaeological
treasures
The San Agustín archaeological park, in
Colombia’s south-west, has the largest
collection of megalithic sculptures in South
America. This impressive array of imposing
statues (many of anthropomorphic figures
and up to four metres tall), stone slabs and
burial chambers was created by a
mysterious pre-Columbian culture.
Los Llanos luxury tented camp
Explore the tropical savannas of Los Llanos
from the exclusive Corocora tented camp,
set within a remote private reserve. Journey
across the grasslands by horse or foot
in search of capybaras, anacondas, giant
anteaters, howler monkeys and a bewildering
array of birds, or help local cowboys herd
cattle.
Eco-chic Caribbean stays
Stay in eco-chic properties at or near the
ruggedly beautiful Tayrona National
Park, where the lush Sierra Nevada
mountains meet the Caribbean Sea. Enjoy
pristine palm-fringed beaches set in deep
bays or take nature hikes through the
untouched rainforest, home to spider
monkeys and numerous birds.
