10 66 50 INTERVIEW REALTOR AVENUE ARTS & THE MASTERS From The Editor As I sat up to key-in the words of this intro to the second edition of Accomplish Magazine, two phrases kept darting across my mind. Since the edition has been thoughtfully put together to commemorate Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Day anniversary, I knew why those phrases just wouldn’t go away. You could guess why... I don’t know the discerning Nigerian who’s not viewing this year’s Independence Day anniversary with “mixed feelings!” or witnessing the widespread “dry celebration!” In fact, the Federal Government plugged the dry hose when it announced, albeit, considerately, that the annual event, which used to be marked with fun, dance, parades, felicitations and highfalutin speeches, will be held in low-profile this year. Even as a diehard optimist, I must confess that “for Nigeria matter, water don pass garri” as some would say in pidgin English. Some compatriots also indicated those mixed emotions when we sought their views. See it all in “Nigeria at 63: The Joys, the Sorrows”. Let’s cheer up, though, with or without wine to offer a toast. There are issues to celebrate about Nigeria. Our compatriots are making us proud in the Diaspora! Our sportsmen and women have been coiling in great wins! Nollywood and Naija afrobeats still get amazing international attention! Plus, the richest man in Africa is a Nigerian! And more... It’s, therefore, apt that this edition which marks Nigeria’s independence anniversary is also celebrating Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, the Founder and President of Dangote Group with operations in Nigeria and across Africa! Turn the pages to see our special package on him. We also celebrate an artistic genius, one who has redefined artistic boundaries and uses his craft to push for a greener, more sustainable future. He is Olalekan Lasekan, a remarkable artist, industrial designer and winner of the 3rd National MSME Award for Excellence in Creative Arts. Since the anniversary will elicit conversations on the challenges of leadership in the country, we present you audacious quotations on the subject by two revered African sons - Nelson Mandela and Thomas Sankara. We hope that those quotes will inspire genuine turn around. What about the ever-declared but rarely-committed-to promise of youths being leaders of tomorrow? We have something on that too. Just turn the pages... There are other unique enlightenment write-ups on health, travel, art and so on. We hope our offering in this special edition will contribute to inspiring our readers to raise the bar in being committed ambassadors of a truly great Nigeria. True, our leaders have failed Nigeria but they didn’t attain such infamy without conscious help from followers - who aid them and then bear the brunt! May this be our last mixedfeelings Independence Day celebration!
