Top three the target for veteran<br />

BARRY Washbourne will be<br />
the oldest clay target shooter<br />
at the Oceania continental<br />
championships in Brisbane.<br />
But that won’t stop the<br />
Ellesmere club man from<br />
firing on all cylinders against<br />
competitors who weren’t even<br />
born when he took up the<br />
sport.<br />
Throughout his 40-year career,<br />
Washbourne has competed<br />
in three different disciplines,<br />
represented New Zealand 12<br />
times and travelled the world.<br />
This month, the two-time<br />
national champion will compete<br />
in the skeet events at the Oceania<br />
competition for a fourth time.<br />
Washbourne, 64, admits<br />
the competition will be tough,<br />
considering the majority are in<br />
their 20s.<br />
“I’m by far the oldest competitor<br />
there,” he said.<br />
“I’ve only taken on this discipline<br />
in the last 10 years and<br />
probably should’ve taken it up<br />
40-odd years ago.”<br />
But age is just a number for<br />
Washbourne, who goes into<br />
the competition as the secondranked<br />
New Zealander, behind<br />
Paul Wilson. Washbourne<br />
scored 299 in his best three<br />
events since September last year,<br />
while Wilson top-scored with<br />
322.<br />
Washbourne will be looking<br />
to improve on his best placing of<br />
fifth, which he achieved in 2017.<br />
“Obviously doing better than<br />
fifth is the goal, a placing like<br />
first, second or third would be<br />
the best,” he said.<br />
“Just as high of a result as I can<br />
manage.”<br />
He will also compete in the<br />
new mixed pairs event with<br />
Christchurch’s Chloe Tipple.<br />
Eleven countries from Guam<br />
to Norfolk Island will take part<br />
in the eight-day, biennial event.<br />
Because of Covid, it will be the<br />
first Oceania competition since<br />
2019.<br />
Although there is one Paris<br />
Olympic qualification up for<br />
grabs, the ins and outs of being<br />
able to qualify as the ‘quota’<br />
makes Washbourne’s chances<br />
difficult.<br />
“It’s quite a long-winded<br />
process and to be picked for<br />
your country, you have to fly to<br />
compete at the world (championships)<br />
next year,” he said.<br />
“Nine out of 10 miss the quota<br />
to go to the Olympics due to the<br />

certain requirements.<br />
“And in New Zealand, they<br />
expect you to finish in the top<br />
15 (at the Olympics) – that’s the<br />
standard they set.”<br />
