Selwyn Times Wednesday October 4 2023 30 SPORT Kempton takes top sports award • By Jaime Cunningham SHAUN KEMPTON’S stellar season – which resulted in selection for the New Zealand Schools rugby team – has seen him claim Rolleston College’s sportsperson of the year award. The Selwyn Schools first XV captain was also awarded rugby player of the year at the school, while Kempton’s mum Nicola took home the JF Reid Memorial Cup for her services as team manager. In the last week, Kempton played for NZ Schools against the Australia under-18 side in Canberra, demolishing the Australians 34-3 in the first of two matches. Awards recognition also went to Rolleston’s senior A netball side, who were promoted to SuperNet Reserve and won the South Island secondary schools’ B grade this year. The team’s 35-26 win over Burnside High claimed the director of sport’s moment of the year award, while coach Denise Keno took out the coaching accolade. Meanwhile, the school’s mixed touch team, which won the national schools title in 2022, was named team of the year. They will look to defend their title in Rotorua in December. Wednesday October 4 2023 Selwyn Times RACING 31 Republican Party heads to NZ Cup • By Michael Guerin TEAM DALGETY’S dream double at Addington may have left them looking for a New Zealand Cup driver. West Melton husband and wife training team Cran and Chrissie Dalgety combined to win the two pacing features on Friday night with Republican Party downing many of the best pacers in the Lamb and Hayward Canterbury Classic after Coney Island Lou won the Kennard Bloodstock Lazarus Stakes. Both used the passing lane to beat more favoured rivals who had harder runs, but both wins were arrivals in the big time that showed the pair deserve to be in our biggest races, which for Republican Party means the IRT NZ Cup and the NZ Derby for Coney Island Lou. The only slight issue for Republican Party is that Blair Orange drove him on Friday night and he will be busy at cup time trying to three-peat with Copy That. Dalgety said a largely unsuccessful trip to Menangle earlier this year has proved the making of Republican Party. “I don’t think it matters where you travel them, getting them out of their comfort zone helps them mature and it definitely has for him.” His immediate plans are unsure but Dalgety hints the Kaikoura Cup could be a good target for Republican Party on his way to the IRT NZ Cup. Coney Island Lou held out the large charges from Who’s Delight and Charlie Brown to win the Lazarus, with hot favourite Don’t Stop Dreaming very close up in fourth after being parked in the 55.2 last 800m. It was Coney Island Lou’s second major win on end and third lifetime, but Dalgety says he hasn’t been the easiest equine project. “He used to be a crazy thing,” he laughs. “When we started with him he was a ball of nervous energy and hard to control but he is very good now. “He has got to the stage with his last two wins, he deserves his shot at the derby – so that is where we will aim him.” There was plenty to like about the second and third horses while both feature paces showed trainer Mark Purdon was right this week when he warned punters his returning superstars would be vulnerable. Earlier in the night Muscle Mountain reminded everyone who the best trotter in the South, and maybe the most talented in the whole of Australasia, is when he overcame his 20m handicap with ease in the Paul Renwick Trot. He was patiently driven by Ben Hope and went from sixth to leading inside 200m on the home bend and bolted clear jogging 57.2 for his last 800m. – Harness Racing Desk Orange to follow in mum and dad’s footsteps • By Brigette Solomon BLAIR ORANGE is a five-time winner of the New Zealand drivers premiership. And now another Orange is getting closer to joining the race day driving ranks – his son Harrison. The 16-year-old earned his trials licence in April and started to work for the successful Purdon and Phelan Racing Stable at Clevedon in May. “I’ve competed in kidz kartz from about age 10 and have spent every school holidays since I was 12 helping out at the Dunn’s stable in Woodend,” said Harrison. “I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in harness racing so when I finished school this year it was mum and dad that suggested Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan’s stable might be a good fit for me.” His mother Lisa Godsall had success as a junior driver. “I’m loving it here,” said Harrison. “Barry and Scott are great to work for and I’m learning heaps and working with some nice horses.” The Purdon/Phelan stable has long been associated with producing talented junior drivers, including current leading North Island junior driver Crystal Hackett. Phelan has been impressed with Harrison’s work ethic. “He’s a really good kid, he sits nicely in the cart and they seem to run for him too which is a very good start.” Godsall said as parents they were “apprehensive” about him driving. “John Dunn was amazing in helping him achieve his trials licence,” she said. “Bob Butt was also good enough to take his trotter Heston Hall to the Hurunui Picnic Races in February for Harrison to drive and he won the race which was pretty awesome!” Said Blair Orange: “We’ve always told Harrison it doesn’t matter who his parents are, he has to walk his own footsteps and write his own story – there will be no expectations around driving from us”.
