RUGBY STAR TACKLES
TIM BATEMAN has many
strings to his bow.
A former professional rugby
player with the Crusaders,
Hurricanes, Japanese club
Red Sparks, and captain of the
Māori All Blacks, he has also
SERIAL PEST
penned children’s books The
Lonely Lemon and The Sad Banana
and operates two wellness
centres with his wife Laura.
And he had to use his rugby
skills when he was attacked by
a homeless man with a pole
who had been pestering female
staff at one of his wellness
centres. Bateman tackled the
homeless man and held him
until police arrived.
The incident has now had its
sequel in court, where the man
was sentenced to 12 months
intensive supervision.
Bateman holds no animosity
towards the man, saying he
hopes he gets the help and
support “he obviously needs”.
Summer
conditions
to reach
scorching
40 deg C
• By Hamish MacLean
SUMMER EXTREMES this
year could include days where
temperatures climb to 40 deg C,
Niwa forecasters say.
Despite increased variability,
hot, dry conditions could present
fire risks along the east coast of
the South Island, particularly
Canterbury.
And the arrival of a strong El
Niño will bring “really windy
conditions” that could push fire
through green pastures.
Niwa meteorologist Ben Noll said
New Zealand’s hottest temperature
happened during an El Niño
summer – when temperatures
climbed to 42.4 deg C in Rangiora
in February 1973. In Christchurch
it got to 41.6 deg C.
This El Niño event, confirmed
last week, would be one of the
biggest in the last couple of
decades.
The weather pattern would
“elevate and enhance” the
variability of spring, which
could produce wild swings in
temperatures and strong winds.
Niwa forecasting principal
scientist Chris Brandolino said
it was more likely than not that
temperatures would climb to 40
deg C in parts of the country over
summer.
South Library and Service
Centre will be rebuilt.
City councillors have supported
a recommendation from the
Waihoro Spreydon-Cashmere-
Heathcote Community Board
and decided on a full rebuild
instead of a repair. The city
council will now proceed with
detailed design.
The library and service
centre will be rebuilt on
its current riverside site on
Colombo St, Beckenham.
The concept design has been
developed with input from the
community and stakeholders,
and is based on the same floor
area as the current facility. It
provides for the same services
City council head of community
support and partnerships
John Filsell said the decision
to rebuild was the fastest, most
cost-effective and environmentally-friendly
option.
“The building was damaged
quite badly in the 2011
earthquakes, and since then the
council has made it safe with
temporary strengthening while
we focused on getting other urgent
projects up and running, such
as Tūranga.
“Today’s decision signals the
council’s ongoing commitment
‘Your wife is dying’
– Barnett on his
life with Jodi
SIMON BARNETT has opened
up on his life with wife Jodi, who
died after a five-and-a-half-year
battle with brain cancer this
week.
The interview was published
in the NZ Herald on Saturday,
where the well-known
Christchurch broadcaster
revealed Jodi only had a short
time to live.
He told journalist Shayne
Currie a palliative care doctor
visited recently and was frank.
Barnett came off air from his
Newstalk ZB Afternoons show
straight away.
“She said, ‘We’ve always
known, Simon. I think you
need to understand that,’ – her
words – ‘your wife is dying’.
“It was very confronting. I
just sobbed.”
Barnett tells of how their love
story started on the slopes of
Mt Hutt in 1988.
He had first spotted the
striking brunette at the Les
Mills gym, during aerobic
classes.
“I just remember thinking
this girl was impossibly beautiful
not just physically – she was
clearly that. But there was just
Simon Barnett
something that radiated from
her.”
Back then, Barnett was hosting
the TVNZ children’s showWhat
Now.
“So I was like big time,” he
jokes.
But, sadly for him, “she had
never heard of What Now, never
seen What Now . . . !”
While he was filming a segment
for the show on the Mt
Hutt skifield, he saw someone
struggling on the Poma lift, and
recognised her as the woman
from the gym.
“She just happened to be there
that day, by chance, and she was
quite possibly the world’s worst
skier.
“I was possibly the second
worst, although I pretended I
was immensely capable.
“She fell off the Poma lift and
the whole lift came to a standstill.
I saw this and I thought
‘That’s the girl from the gym!’”
He scrambled down the mountainside
on skis, not knowing
how to stop himself properly.
“I said, ‘Would you like a
hand?’, which is patently ridiculous
for me, given that I can’t
really ski.
“She said ‘That would be
really good, please’. I got her up
and that just started it. She was
jaw-droppingly kind from that
moment.
“Every time I was in her
company, I just felt so much
better.”
“When you superimpose
these warm phases of natural
variability on to a warming
climate it’s hard not to think,
‘How do you not get warmer?”’
Otago University geography
senior lecturer Dr Daniel
Kingston said the El Niño
influence on top of the region’s
climate-change-affected
summers was adding “another
layer of extremeness”.
As global temperatures
increased over the coming
decades, the hot days were going
to get hotter as well.
“What we might think of
as an extreme hot day at the
moment will occur more
regularly into the future.
“If we used to expect El Niños
to make our summers that bit
drier or that bit hotter, under
climate change we are starting
from a higher baseline.”
El Niño would produce
more westerlies in particular,
Kingston said.
While the West Coast could
receive a lot of rain, it was the
eastern side of the South Island
that tended to produce drier
conditions.
Fire and Emergency NZ
national wildfire specialist Tim
SCORCHER:
Hot, dry
conditions could
create fire risks
for much of the
country this
summer.
Mitchell said strong winds
could push fire through green
paddocks as it burned through
thatch.
Through a variable spring, he
expected “a see-sawing of fire
danger risk”.
Heading into Christmas
though as the land dries out
there would be increasing risk
in the east coast of both islands,
he said.
“Normal is quite different to
what we’ve experienced for the
past couple of seasons.
“This year is going to be
different.”
NEWS 5
Sepuloni faces testy shoppers
CABINET Minister Carmel
Sepuloni was challenged on
her party’s record on crime,
the cost of living, veterans and
beneficiaries during a visit to
The Palms mall on Tuesday
afternoon.
Sepuloni, who has held several
portfolios including social development
and employment while
also filling the role of deputy
prime minister since Chris Hipkins
took over as prime minister,
did a walkabout at The Palms in
Shirley.
She chose a quiet time to visit,
but two women were keen to
express their concerns on crime
and how the cost of living was
hitting young people.
They said young people were
not facing consequences when
they committed crimes.
Sepuloni responded that there
were a lot of different issues going
on in young offenders’ lives,
including fallout from suffering
family harm or having other
family members who have been
to jail.
By offering them wraparound
services there had been a massive
reduction in ram-raids, she said.
“Then it’s not just them but
also their siblings and their
families who are getting the
support so they aren’t going on
to re-offend . . . if you just lock
them up and throw away the key
then in the future it’s just going
to cause more problems for us.”
She added the government had
also been trying to help retailers
who were affected by crimes.
Sepuloni was questioned about
people on benefits using their
dole to buy drugs.
It was too easy for these people
to do nothing, the woman said.
“What are you going to do
with these guys cos they’re just
taking taxpayers’ money and
getting high?”
When told that some drug
users needed support from
the health system rather than
punishment, the woman said she
doubted they would be willing,
or interested, in accepting this
help.
The majority of people went on
a benefit for a short time to get a
helping hand, Sepuloni said.
Her government had seen
higher numbers of beneficiaries
moving into jobs, in part because
of the government making it
easier to take up apprenticeships
and introducing programmes to
help them upskill, such as getting
their driver licences.
One woman said, in contrast
to Sepuloni’s day, it was much
harder for young people to move
out of home these days.
Sepuloni said Labour had
lifted the minimum wage each
year and had also raised the
student allowance.
Half-price public transport,
cheaper or free prescriptions
and plans for free dental care for
under-30s were other initiatives.
Sepuloni was approached by
an army veteran, James, who
RED: Carmel Sepuloni defended
Labour’s track record during a visit to
The Palms mall.
PHOTOS: KATIE SCOTCHER
asked why Labour does not have
a veterans policy.
He complained about the massive
delays to accessing veteran
support services which ranged
from 80 days to a year.
When she tried to respond, the
veteran said: “I’m going to keep
talking.”
After a long list of complaints,
he said: “None of this is being
discussed in the election and I
don’t think this is fair.”
He said it was a problem for
him that service during the aftermath
of the February 22, 2011
earthquake, which had caused
him to develop Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD), was not
covered by Veteran Affairs, while
ACC did not understand the
needs of veterans.
He refused to accept her offer
to shake hands at the end of the
conversation.
Sepuloni told RNZ Labour
does not have a veterans policy
and she will be following up.
Rounding off her mall visit,
she joined volunteers hitting the
phones to ask people to vote for
Labour. There was no answer
on her first two calls and on her
third call the person answered
but did not want to chat.
Earlier on Tuesday, Sepuloni
and Ilam MP Sarah Pallett visited
Canterbury University.
When both met with a group
of Pasifika students, one asked
why politicians and Labour’s
Pacific caucus only visit the
Christchurch Pacific community
in an election year. Sepuloni said
she has visited Christchurch on
other occasions, as have Aupito
William Sio and Poto Williams.
One student asked what would
stop supermarkets from pocketing
profits if GST was removed
from fruit and veges. Sepuloni
said the grocery commissioner
would ensure that does not happen.
When asked what Labour was
doing to tackle racism, Sepuloni
said the party was calling it out.
On whether New Zealand
should cut ties with the monarchy
she said there were more
pressing issues.
‘I forgive you’ victim says to man who
• By Emily Moorhouse
A MAN who organised sex
work for a 15-year-old girl and
took some of her earnings while
she was addicted to drugs and
desperately looking for guidance
has been offered forgiveness.
“I stand here to tell you that I
forgive you,” the now 20-year-old
woman, who has turned her life
around, told Mathew Stephens.
Stephens, 44, appeared in the
district court yesterday where
he was sentenced for “exploiting
an extremely vulnerable” girl by
organising a prostitution deal
and taking $100 of the girl’s
earnings.
After giving Stephens
discounts for previous good
character, Judge Gerard Lynch
sentenced him to three months of
community detention with a curfew
from 7pm to 6am daily, and
100 hours of community work.
He also ordered Stephens to
pay an emotional harm payment
of $1000 to the victim.
After a jury trial in June,
Stephens was found guilty of one
charge of assisting persons under
18 in providing commercial
sexual services and one charge
of receiving earnings from commercial
sexual services provided
by persons under 18.
The charges relate to Stephens
dropping the girl off at a motel to
HARM: Mathew Stephens was found guilty at trial of assisting a person under 18 in
providing commercial sexual services and receiving money from those services.
meet a client before taking $100
of her earnings when the job was
done, between October 2016 and
June 2018.
Stephens was found not guilty
of another assisting and receiving
charge.
The woman read her victim
impact statement in court,
describing feeling lost and alone,
turning to prostitution to fund
her drug addiction.
“You guided me to use my
body for money. I looked up to
you. I needed you to tell me I
didn’t need to do that, and I
PHOTO: GEORGE HEARD/NZ HERALD
had choices.”
The woman said she couldn’t
face her own family and was
crippled for years not knowing
what to do with her life, looking
for guidance when she met
Stephens.
She has been working and
living in Christchurch and for
the past few years has done a lot
of reflection on what her life was
like.
“I am free now because of
God’s grace. I am able to love and
forgive myself.
“I stand here today to tell
you that I forgive you Mathew
Stephens.”
The woman, who has automatic
name suppression, said she hoped
Stephens was able to “change
your heart and forgive yourself”
as well.
The young woman said she
won’t ever get those years of her
life back but will continue with
her personal growth journey,
stating her “only wish” was for
Stephens to do the same.
Stephens was charged under
the Prostitution Reform Act
2003 and repeatedly denied any
involvement in the offending,
claiming the woman was
“vindictive and jealous” and
made up the allegations to get
back at him for sleeping with her
friend.
During the trial, the woman
said she met Stephens when she
was 15 and was very “mentally
fragile”.
She was also addicted to
drugs, using methamphetamine,
cannabis, speed, and MDMA,
and was already involved in
sex work.
NEWS 7
pimped her out at 15
No change to
The Crown alleged Stephens
introduced himself to the woman
and told her that he sorts out
deals for girls wanting to make
money through sex work.
He told her he was there to
protect her and make her feel
safe.
In an interview with the police,
which was played to the court,
the woman described herself as
a walking body with “no soul or
spirit”.
She said she was very broken,
suicidal, “basically homeless”
and felt like she had no genuine
connections with anyone during
the period she was associating
with Stephens.
She was raised in a Christian
household and was not aware of
what the real world was like and
was “probably an easy target”,
she said.
She and Stephens would message
each other often and see
each other roughly four times a
month, sometimes for sex work
or to just “hang out”.
The first time they met, Stephens
gave her $100, she said.
The woman also said Stephens
was always quick to give her
money and described him as
“grooming” her, stating he would
often pay her to spend time with
him.
She described “inappropriate
behaviour” from Stephens that
This report was produced
by Open Justice – Te Pātītī,
a Public Interest Journalism
initiative funded by NZ on Air
she felt “obliged” to respond to,
such as kissing.
The court heard how she
sometimes felt uncomfortable,
and Stephens would act as if the
pair were a couple, on one occasion
asking her for sex but later
admitting it was wrong of him
to ask.
She described being high and
sleep-deprived most of the time
they saw each other. She eventually
admitted herself to a rehabilitation
programme to turn her
life around and in 2020, made a
statement to the police.
She described Stephens as “manipulative
and controlling” and
having “no boundaries”.
Crown prosecutor Patrick
Brand said deterrence and
denunciation for this type of offending
was an important part of
the sentencing process.
Brand stressed how vulnerable
victims were in this type of
offending and while the woman
was “extremely vulnerable” at
the time, she had gone on a “path
of self-discovery” and was much
stronger now.
Stephen’s lawyer Joshua
Grainger said his client was assessed
as having a low risk of reoffending,
stating the organised
prostitution happened one time
and was quite a few years ago.
“Mr Stephens is someone
who will hopefully remain a
stranger to this court once this
case is over,” Grainger told Judge
Gerard Lynch.
Grainger pointed out the
stigma that Stephens will have
attached to him with media
reporting on the case and asked
the Judge Lynch to consider a
sentence of community detention
rather than home detention.
Judge Lynch said while there
would be some attention on
Stephens’ case “that is simply a
result of criminal offending”.
Judge Lynch turned to the
woman in court and acknowledged
her generosity in forgiving
Stephens and her courage in
sharing the impact his offending
had on her.
“I wanted to acknowledge
today just how impressed I was
to learn how you did not wallow,
rather you pulled yourself up
and are a much different and
improved version of yourself
today.”
Judge Lynch said Stephens
exploited the woman who
was “extremely vulnerable”
and would have seen him as a
person she could trust given the
significant age gap.
ADRIAN ORR and the
Reserve Bank monetary policy
committee have kept the Official
Cash Rate on hold at 5.5 per
cent.
Given tight pre-election timing
and the fact third-quarter
inflation data will not be known
until October 17, economists
had mostly expected the rate to
stay put.
But a hike was not completely
ruled out and a more aggressive
tone was expected from the
Reserve Bank.
The central bank’s monetary
policy committee agreed interest
rates might need to remain
at a restrictive level for a more
sustained period of time.
“Interest rates are constraining
economic activity and reducing
inflationary pressure as
required,” the central bank said.
“Demand growth in the economy
continues to ease. While
GDP growth in the June quarter
was stronger than anticipated,
the growth outlook remains
subdued.”
The RBNZ said with
monetary conditions staying
restrictive, spending growth was
expected to decline further.
“Globally, economic growth
remains below trend and headline
inflation has eased for most
of our trading partners.”
Core inflation had eased, but
to a lesser extent.
“Weakening global demand is
putting downward pressure on
New Zealand export volumes
and prices. Apart from oil,
global import prices have
eased.”
The imbalance between supply
and demand was moderating
but a prolonged period of
subdued activity was needed to
reduce inflationary pressure, the
bank added.
“There is a near-term risk that
activity and inflation do not
slow as much as needed.”
COURT 9
On June 3 about 7.10am, the
woman was inside the studio
when another employee came in
and said a man had followed her
into the studio.
The woman went outside and
asked the man what he was doing,
to which he replied, “Whatever
you want me to do”.
Kazakos then approached the
woman aggressively, causing
her to feel scared and go back
into the studio, locking the door
behind her.
Kazakos then began to shake
the door before calling the business
a total of 143 times, leaving
“aggressive” voice messages of
him “ranting and rambling”.
On June 11, Kazakos called the
woman’s personal phone multiple
times and left voice messages.
The same day. Bateman was
leaving the business when he saw
Kazakos. He confronted him
about calling the woman and
told Kazakos he was not allowed
back into the studio.
Kazakos shouted at Bateman,
“Do you want to go c***?”, before
running to a small doorway
and grabbing a long metal pole,
swinging it at Bateman in a baseball
bat fashion.
Kazakos put the pole down,
adopting a fighting stance and
lunging at Bateman several times
before picking up the pole again
and hitting Bateman on his left
arm.
Bateman then tackled Kazakos
to the ground and held him there
until police arrived.
Bateman told the NZ Herald
the biggest thing
for him, and his
team, was that
Kazakos got the
help and support
he obviously
needs.
He said they
Tim have hundreds
Bateman of customers
coming into the
studio every week, sometimes
forced to tackle problem head on
when it’s dark outside, and it was
important that they feel safe and
comfortable, as well as his staff.
“It’s not nice knowing people
like that are out and about just
out of control.”
He said Kazakos would call
up the business “ranting and
rambling” in an aggressive
manner, to the point where he
became concerned he might hurt
somebody.
Bateman said he had no animosity
towards Kazakos, saying
he would rather he be assaulted
by the man than one of his female
staff members.
He felt as though the matter
had been dealt with well.
Kazakos was also charged
relating to an incident on February
16, when he pushed and
threatened a security guard who
served a trespass order on him at
the South City shopping centre.
From the dock, Kazakos asked
the judge for permission to
speak, stating he would never
call the business 143 times or
approach the females in a sexual
way.
“Why would I be doing that to
females when I can just pay for
This report was produced by Open
Justice – Te Pātītī, a Public
funded by NZ on Air
it?” he asked the judge.
Kazakos’ lawyer Kerri Bell said
her client had mental health issues
at the time of the offending
but is now getting the support he
needs.
She asked Judge Mark Callaghan
to impose a sentence of
intensive supervision and said
Kazakos had told her the three
and a half months he’d spent in
custody had been a good opportunity
for him to “get clean”, and
he is in a good space now.
He was also willing to pay
reparation to the victims, the
court heard.
Judge Callaghan said reports
provided to the court showed
Kazakos suffered from various
mental health issues and if he
didn’t continue taking his medication,
he would likely re-offend.
He sentenced Kazakos to 12
months’ intensive supervision
with special conditions,
including not to possess or
consume alcohol or nonprescribed
drugs, not to contact
the victims of his offending
and to attend mental health
appointments.
Judge rules disciplinary action can be
taken against Reay over CTV disaster
• By Soumya Bhamidipati
THE professional engineering
body can take disciplinary
action against the man
whose company designed the
Canterbury Television building,
a judge has ruled.
The six-storey CTV building
collapsed during the February
22, 2011, earthquake, killing 115
people.
Engineering New Zealand
(ENZ – formerly known as the Institution
of Professional Engineers
New Zealand, or IPENZ) wants to
investigate whether Dr Alan Reay
should have better supervised
his employee who designed the
building.
However, Reay is calling for
the disciplinary action to be
abandoned because of how much
time has passed.
It follows years of litigation,
including judicial decisions on
whether a disciplinary committee
had the jurisdiction to
investigate someone who was no
longer a member of the professional
body.
Now, Justice Paul Radich has
ruled in ENZ’s favour.
“The disciplinary process is
able to, and should, see itself
through,” he said, noting the
court would not normally intervene
before a complaint process
was completed.
“I am satisfied that in this case
it continues to be in the public
interest to enable the disciplinary
committee to consider the complaints
substantively.”
At a hearing at the High
Court at Wellington last month,
Reay’s lawyer, Kristy McDonald,
Alan Reay
GEOFF SLOAN
argued there was no explicit
requirement under the 1986
rules – when the building was
constructed – for her client to
supervise his employee.
She argued the agency had not
specified which rule her client
was meant to have broken, and
had drawn the matter out over
more than a decade.
There was no need to protect
the public, McDonald said, as
Reay was now 82 and had retired
from engineering.
Justice Radich said while the
1986 code did not refer explicitly
to supervision, it was implied in
how the provisions were worded.
“A member operating a
business that employs other
engineers will, if they are to act
professionally and with integrity,
and if they are to recognise their
responsibilities in the public
interest and to their profession,
supervise those employees,” he
said.
“Accordingly, it is for the disciplinary
committee to determine,
based upon evidence of the
nature of Dr Reay’s practice in
1986, whether his peers would
regard that conduct as being
in line with generally accepted
standards of the profession at the
time.”
While he acknowledged the
time that had elapsed, Justice
Radich found the delays should
not prevent the disciplinary
hearing from proceeding, and
would not unfairly impact Reay.
ENZ chief executive Dr Richard
Templer said he was encouraged
by the court’s decision.
“The reality is it’s been 12
years since the Christchurch
earthquake, whereby 115 people
tragically lost their lives when
the CTV building collapsed.
“People are looking for answers
and this decision confirms
this complaint must be allowed
to continue through the normal
process and be heard by a disciplinary
committee from the
profession.”
The disciplinary process would
begin as quickly as possible,
Templer said.
A 2012 Royal Commission of
Inquiry found Reay’s employee,
engineer David Harding, made
fundamental errors in designing
the building.
It criticised Reay for handing
sole responsibility for the design
over to somebody so inexperienced.
That same year, 54 family
members and the Ministry of
Building, Innovation and Employment’s
chief engineer made
complaints about both men to
the professional body.
A separate police
investigation, which concluded
in November 2017, resulted in
no criminal prosecution for the
building’s collapse.
Community board infighting, insults
• By Daniel Alvey
INFIGHTING and name calling
on a community board has led
to resignations, triggering a byelection.
The Malvern Community
Board in the Selwyn District is in
disarray after member Sean Ellis
resigned in late August followed
by chair Ken May a week later.
May and Ellis appear to have
been in regular conflict.
May said Ellis thought he
was “god” and was trying to
undermine him as the chair.
But Ellis responded saying
he, along with the other board
members, were trying to change
May’s approach and attitude.
“The rest of the board tried
to change it and make it more
professional and more open and
we were getting knocked back all
the time,” Ellis said.
“He wasn’t behaving correctly
as chair.”
Ellis said he left the board out
of “frustration” with May which
was affecting his personal and
family life.
“It was getting to a position
where it was very unhappy and
very frustrating and that was
starting to impact on my family
lead to resignations and by-election
life,” said Ellis.
May also took a swipe at other
board members saying, “I’m too
old to be pissing around with
children.”
He singled out Calvin Payne
and Sharn Nu’u, saying they
were “no brainers”.
“There was a severe lack of
desire on my part to deal with
idiots. The only two sensible ones
were Bruce Russell and myself,
in my opinion,” he said.
Ellis said May’s comments
were “vulgar” and “uncouth”.
May and Ellis’ resignations
mean a by-election will now be
needed.
May said what finally led to his
resignation were issues around
the Springfield Donut, the
township’s symbol and tourist
attraction which the Selwyn
district council has copped
criticism for bad paint leaving it
looking tatty.
Between 2020 and 2022 the
donut has been painted four
times at a cost of $17,864.
“Calvin ‘no brain’ Payne went
up to Springfield because there
were problems with the donut
and came up with a whole lot
of bs about the donut. That it
should be encased in scaffolding
and it was dangerous, the stand
behind it was unsteady.
“Then the other no-brainer
Sharn Nu’u got onto it and made
some comment about how she’d
Payne confirmed he had raised
safety issues with the donut, but
he had no response for being
called a “no-brainer”.
Nu’u also confirmed she had
raised the issue of feeling unsafe
on the donut in a conversation
outside a public meeting.
Nu’u said May’s comments
were an example of what they
were dealing with.
“The board lost confidence in
the chair.”
She said May’s comments were
unacceptable and unprofessional.
May claimed Payne had
been going around other
board members calling for his
resignation. Payne said that
wasn’t correct.
“I did not want Ken to resign.
Not from the board, no,” Payne
said.
Nu’u also said May’s claim was
incorrect.
Innovative research using patients’
heart cells to reduce stroke risk
HEART ATTACKS and
strokes should not happen
says a scientist whose research
into these diseases has won a
$155,000 grant.
Canterbury University school
of biological sciences associate
professor Steven Gieseg is
leading the research project ‘Is
artery inflammation driven by
plaque composition?’ which has
been awarded a Heart Research
Foundation grant.
Gieseg is the principal
investigator of a team that has
developed an innovative new
tissue culture system allowing
researchers to study in the
laboratory human artery samples
from stroke patients. The team
includes Christchurch Hospital’s
professor
Justin Roake
and University
of Otago
Christchurch’s
Dr Barry Hock.
“The body
is normally
Steven
Gieseg
very good at
regulating the
inflammatory
process that causes strokes and
heart attacks,” said Gieseg, who
REGULATE: Canterbury University research is examining artery plaques removed from
stroke patients to illuminate the inflammation process.
PHOTO: GETTY
has been researching heart
disease and heart health since
1990.
“Within the arteries though,
the control systems appear to
become ineffective, allowing
cholesterol filled pus to build up
inside the artery wall, forming
artery plaques.
“It is the rupture of these white
blood cell-filled artery plaques
that causes blood clots to form
and stops the flow of blood to the
brain or heart.”
About 1700 New Zealanders
die from out-of-hospital cardiac
arrest each year.
Better understanding of the
inflammation activity in heart
cells could lead to a reduction in
heart attacks and strokes, while
an innovative new approach
developed over the last six
years could lead to research
breakthroughs.
Said Gieseg: “We have
developed a unique system
where we can take artery plaques
removed from stroke patients by
our surgical collaborators and
keep it alive in the laboratory
for up to a week. This allows us
to examine the inflammation
process in actual human artery
plaque instead of relying on
mouse models.”
Researchers can then break
the tissue down and count the
individual cell types generating
and causing the inflammation.
For the first time researchers will
be directly measuring cause and
effect.
“By piecing together what
is actually happening with
the inflammatory cells
within the plaque we can take
cardiovascular disease detection
and treatment beyond just
measuring cholesterol and look
at the full inflammatory process
within a patient.
“Blood cholesterol and blood
pressure are part of the disease
process but the fire that creates
the artery growth is white blood
cell inflammation.
“We want to work out
what exactly is driving the
inflammation in the artery that
creates heart disease. If we know
what the drivers are we could
help develop new drugs to block
the disease without shutting
down the normal immune
systems.”
Landslides cause more deaths
than any other natural hazard
RESEARCHERS have received
EQC funding to investigate how
climate change could increase
the risk of damage triggered by
earthquakes and landslides.
Canterbury University School
of Earth and Environment
senior lecturer Dr Timothy Stahl
is leading the research.
Stahl says earthquakes and
landslides are two of New
Zealand’s deadliest and most
costly natural disasters.
“Cumulatively, landslides
have caused more deaths in
New Zealand than any other
natural hazard and lead to $300
million in insurance claims each
year. Our research programme
spans geology and disaster risk
resilience and provides a better
fundamental understanding of
these processes,” he said.
“We plan to create up-to-date
models for these hazards that
will ultimately allow us to be
more prepared and resilient.
We’ll also drive new research
into how natural disasters,
such as landslides, cliff collapse
and flooding triggered by
earthquakes, are affected by
climate change.”
A big quake on the alpine
fault is expected to trigger major
landslides and cut communities
off.
Stahl says it is a high priority
area of research because a
warming climate and more
frequent storms will continue
to increase the cost of insurance
claims and have a profound
impact on people’s lives and
property.
“It’s very important because
climate change, which is linked
to varying storm frequency,
intensity and duration, has
an impact on several other
hazards.
“If you have more saturated
ground prior to an earthquake
this increases the risk of
earthquake-induced flooding
and also means there’s a greater
risk of landslides on hillsides.
“Rising sea levels and rivers
running higher will also change
patterns of earthquake-induced
flooding.”
The research team is one
of three from the university
awarded funding from EQC
to fill knowledge gaps and
improve engineering practices.
Each programme will receive
$450,000 over three years from
2024.
Stahl said the study will
expand geological data at key
locations along active faults,
produce better models of
earthquake and landslide multihazards,
and improve guidance
for building near active faults.
POLICE HAVE charged a
41-year-old man following
an aggravated robbery at a
Sydenham service station.
The man allegedly entered
the Mobil service station on
Colombo St about 9am on
September 23 and demanded
cash and cigarettes.
Police said he then threatened
the service station attendant
with a weapon and fled the scene
on a black Milazo mountain
bike, heading west down
Milton St.
The store attendant was
uninjured, but police said at the
time they were shaken and upset
by the experience.
He has been charged with
aggravated robbery and will
re-appear in the district court on
FOR OVER a decade, the Governors Bay
Jetty was closed to the public.
The jetty, which was damaged by the
February 22, 2011 earthquake, officially
reopened at the weekend to an audience of
over 400 supporters.
Said Governors Bay Jetty Restoration
Trust chair Prue Miller: “I’m actually a bit
speechless about it, knowing that it will be
used for the next hundred years.”
Miller said children were among the first
to wander down the new jetty.
“Most children in Governors Bay had
never had that experience.
“It was an amazing turn out and a
fantastic vibe.
“Sixteen jetty jumpers braved the cold
early-morning water – not just by
jumping in but by swimming around the
DIVE RIGHT IN:
Open water swimmers
were the first jumpers
off the new jetty.
harbour too.”
The Canterbury Open Water Swimming
Association made the winning $1100 bid
to be the first jetty jumpers.
The online Trade Me auction was set up
by the trust to raise funds to pay for the
jetty.
The total cost of the rebuild was $3.7
million, and the trust received financial
backing from the city council to fund the
project. After sourcing the $1.5 million
of their share, the trust has $350,000 left
to raise for the rebuild. Miller said the
next major project will be starting on the
boathouse.
“There is still a lot of work to do, but we
have four years to pay for the jetty.
“We have all had the same vision since
the beginning of the project, and a great
many people were a part of making the
jetty restoration such a success.”
study.
The role of cow, goat or sheep milk in
the nutrition and health of older women.
Milk provides important nutrients that help older people to maintain
muscle and bone health, and low milk intake is often associated with
poor nutrition in older adults.
We are looking for female volunteers aged 60 to 80 years to participate
in the YUMMI study, a 12-week research study investigating the health
effects of consuming different types milk – cow, goat, or sheep.
We will provide you with cow, goat or sheep milk powder to drink
twice a day for 12-weeks, or you will be asked to eat your normal diet
(control group). The time commitment for the study will be about 11
hours and you will attend five clinic visits. You will receive up to $220 in
supermarket vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs
involved with participating in this study (e.g. parking and/or travel costs).
If you are a woman aged 60 to 80 years and can drink milk, we would
love to hear from you.
Decision making for family members who have lost capacity
Issues can arise when a person loses the
capacity to manage their affairs and lacks
appropriate Enduring Powers of Attorney
(EPA). Organisations like banks or a rest
home may hesitate to engage with family
members without an EPA in place.
In these situations, an application to
the Family Court under the Protection of
Personal and Property Rights Act 1988
(PPPRA) to appoint a property manager
and/or welfare guardian may be necessary.
These roles are designed to ensure the
proper management of the financial and
personal well-being of the person, referred
to as the ‘Subject Person,’ when they cannot
do so themselves. The PPPRA emphasises
using the least restrictive measures and
encouraging a Subject Person to continue
to exercise such capacity as they may have
to the greatest extent possible.
The PPPRA also governs the actions of
an Attorney acting under an EPA. Orders
can be sought if concerns arise regarding
their use of the EPA.
A property manager can be appointed
under the PPPRA when a person wholly
or partly lacks the capacity to manage their
property. They act in the best interests of
the Subject Person and can seek powers
to manage their finances, including
bank accounts and other financial
responsibilities.
When a person cannot make decisions
regarding their personal care and wellbeing,
such as living arrangements and
healthcare, a welfare guardian can be
appointed to assist the person with
decisions relating to medical care and their
living situation. Welfare guardians also
ensure the Subject Persons daily needs
are met, including hygiene, nutrition, and
socialisation, advocating for a high quality
of life.
Applications under the PPPRA are
processed in the Family Court. An essential
initial step is obtaining a medical report
assessing the Subject Person’s capacity to
make decisions independently.
After the application is filed, the Court
appoints a lawyer, known as Counsel for
the Subject Person, to act on behalf of the
Subject Person and to ensure that their
wishes and best interests are accurately
represented during the application process.
Counsel for the Subject Person meets with
the person, obtains their views, and reports
to the Court.
Typically, a Judge decides an application
without requiring the parties to appear
Protecting you
through all stages
of life
Thursday October 5 2023 The Star 19
in Court. However, a hearing may
be necessary, for example if there is
disagreement within the family and the
application is opposed.
Conclusion
When a person loses capacity, appointing
property managers and welfare guardians
under the PPPRA can be critical to ensure
their ongoing well-being. These roles
also serve as safeguards against financial
exploitation, neglect, and the misuse of
personal assets.
Navigating these decisions can be
stressful. If you require assistance with
an application under the PPPRA or
regarding your own EPA, please contact
SENIORS’ LIVING LIFE
Advertising Feature
Natural support for
healthy joints
Joint issues will affect most of us at some time.
They can appear in any joint, such as the neck, back,
shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, hips, knees, ankles
and feet.
Cartilage is the protective surface between
moving bones that allows them to move freely. It
is constantly worn away and needs to be rebuilt
constantly. This repair process slows down for most
of us as we age. The result is not enough cartilage
in some joints causing the joint function to be less
smooth. This is the most common form of arthritis,
called osteoarthritis, and it leads to inflammation,
pain, stiffness and reduced joint mobility.
Joint pain can also be a factor in falls. Generally,
joints with the most use or stress show problems
first.
Many people seek pain relief from their doctor.
The usual prescription is non-steroidal antiinflammatory
drugs, or NSAIDs, which offer pain
relief but do nothing to stop the progression of
arthritis.
According to the British Journal of General
Practice, NSAIDs are not recommended for longterm
use and are responsible for 30% of hospital
admissions, mainly due to internal bleeding, heart
attack, stroke and renal damage. Research shows
that all NSAIDs double the risk of hospitalization
due to heart failure.
Supporting the body with the proper
supplementary nutrients is beneficial in helping
joint health for many people.
A local Christchurch company, Kiwi Natural
Health or KNH, has produced an advanced, highpotency
formula called “Joint Care Plus” to support
healthy joint function.
Inflammation of joints can cause pain and slows
the healing process. Joint Care Plus contains
turmeric, ginger and black pepper to help reduce
inflammation and pain and enhance digestion and
absorption of nutrients. The formula also contains
nutrients that have been researched to support joint
health, including boron, selenium, zinc, manganese,
proline and MSM, and the highly researched
glucosamine sulfate-potassium chloride complex, as
well as chondroitin sulfate.
This comprehensive formula is in an easy-toswallow
capsule. Due to the number of nutrients in
the formula, taking two or three capsules once daily
is recommended to achieve the necessary amount
of each nutrient. A loading dose of three capsules
twice daily may be used in severe cases.
KNH Joint Care and further information
is available from the natural health advisers,
Advanced Natural Nutrition
FOR HEALTHY JOINTS
Are your joints painful, stiff, noisy, swollen or inflamed? This is often caused by a lack of
cartilage, the soft spongy material in all joints between the moving bones. Sufficient
cartilage allows the joints to move freely. KNH JOINT CARE PLUS contains a comprehensive
formula of nutrients known to support the body maintain & replace
Papanui’s fundraiser line-up
promises plenty of punch
MATCH-UP: Riley Te Ao will face Blenheim’s Taine McNaulty at the heavy hitters fundraising
event on Saturday, organised by Papanui’s Sam Watt (right).
Top right – South Island champion Christian Tikao will also feature.
• By Jaime Cunningham
A NUMBER of national and
South Island champions will
headline Papanui Boxing Club’s
heavy hitters fundraising event,
which returns for an eighth year
on Saturday.
Although the club has lost
some top fighters overseas and
to injury, the event is a chance
for Papanui to showcase their
club and the region’s talent in
the 19 bouts.
Event organiser and five-time
New Zealand champion Sam
Watt said the smaller clubs in
Canterbury have grown and
impacted on the level of competition.
“The Canterbury boxing scene
is growing from strength to
strength,” he said.
“In the past, Riverside boxing
have dominated throughout the
mid-2000s to mid-2010s and
lately the traditional strong clubs
Woolston, Papanui and Smiling
Tigers.
“These clubs have now been
joined by Rangiora boxing and
Champ Nation also having
strong stables. This has meant
the local scene is really competitive
and a great camaraderie has
been built.”
While Papanui’s stable is
rebuilding after dominating over
the past couple of years, there
will be plenty of up and coming
talent in the ring on Saturday.
Riley Te Ao will be one of the
headliners, despite his short time
competing.
Watt said he has only been in a
boxing gym since February last
year.
“But (he) has racked up a
number of wins with his great
footwork and fierce body punching,”
he said.
Riley was the most scientific
junior boxer at both the Canterbury
championships and South
Island Golden Gloves this year.
The ages of boxers will range
from 14 to 36 at the event, which
will have four female bouts.
Welterweight and multiple
South Island champion Christian
Tikao will also feature.
Watt said Tikao is an “absolute
headache” for any opponent,
with other welterweights declining
to fight him.
The night will finish with a
bout between Papanui’s William
Vuidreketi and Champ Nation’s
Jacob Hermens.
Vuidreketi is the current South
Island Golden Gloves champion
and has won his last four fights.
Four-time New Zealand
champion Azeez Ghazizada
won’t be on the card after his
opponent Ryley Sutherland
(Woolston) withdrew earlier this
week.
Ghazizada won a silver medal
at the Oceania championships
in May, losing his final by a split
decision to Australian Redhu
Diyanshu.
• The first fight starts
at 6pm at Christchurch
Teenager revs up for race of his life
• By Daniel Alvey
CHRISTCHURCH teenager
Louis Sharp is preparing for
the biggest event of his motor
racing career as he faces a
championship showdown.
The 16-year-old Rodin Carlin
driver is leading by one point
in the 2023 ROCKiT F4 British
championship, ahead of Hitech
Pulse-Eight’s William Macintyre.
The three-race showdown will
take place this weekend at the
Brands Hatch race track near
London.
“There’s nothing to lose now,”
he said on Facebook.
“We’re heading into the last
round. With how close it is we
really need to go out and nail it.”
Sharp has had five wins so far
in his second championship season,
three more than Macintyre.
He hopes winning the championship
will move him to the next
step on the ladder.
“I’m hoping we will be moving
onwards from F4, there’s a bit
of chat about what we do next
year but apart from that I’m
fully focused on closing out the
championship,” Sharp told the
Barc’ing Mad podcast.
Born in the United Kingdom,
Sharp spent most of his childhood
in Christchurch, attending
St Joseph’s School and St Bede’s
College before moving back to
the UK last year with his dad
Jason to pursue his F1 dream.
“As a family, we have had to
sacrifice a lot to make this happen,
but if I want to achieve my
dream I need to be in the UK.”
Sharp is hoping to follow in
the footsteps of fellow Rodin
driver Liam Lawson, who has
been making his mark on Formula
One as he stands in for the
injured Daniel Riccardo at Alpha
Tauri.
A former winner of the
championship was McLaren F1
driver Lando Norris in 2015.
FORMER NEW Zealand
billiards and snooker champion,
Dave Meredith will make his
debut on the international
tennis circuit at the International
Tennis Federation World
Tennis Masters in Mallorca this
month.
Meredith (left), the country’s
current 75s champion, is part of
the four-man New Zealand team
competing in the world event for
ages 65 to 85, which has attracted
entries from 21 countries. His
team mates are former Davis
Cup representative David
Hawkes of Wellington, Gavin
Dunn, also from Christchurch
and Phil Crozier of Ashburton.
He leaves this week for the
teams’ event, which runs from
October 8-13. Meredith will then
line up for individual honours
against 66 other players from
around the world in his age
group from October 14-21.
“For me playing tennis
overseas is definitely unchartered
territory. I will be on a learning
curve as there are a lot of
unknown factors to overcome
such as playing on clay and
playing opponents who I know
nothing about,” he said.
SPORT 25
Snooker veteran off to tennis world masters
On the plus side for Meredith
– currently ranked 262 in the
world – is his experience in
international competition. He
competed in three world amateur
snooker championships in 1978,
1980 and 1987 and six world
amateur billiards championships
in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1990
and 1996.
“I am definitely looking
forward to the tennis and
will give it my best shot,”
said Meredith who still plays
regularly at a high level and is
coach and mentor to a number
of aspiring players, including his
grandchildren.
Experienced hands ready
for premier competition
New format
will ‘keep
game alive’
• By Diane Keenan
FAMILIAR FACES will be on
court for Cashmere and Te Kura
Hagley as they seek to defend
their titles in Christchurch’s
premier men’s and women’s
tennis competition.
Competition starts on
Saturday with the Cashmere
men having a home tie against
Burnside Park, while in the
women’s competition Te Kura
Hagley plays Shirley at Shirley.
The men’s and women’s
competitions have both
attracted six teams – Cashmere,
Elmwood, Burnside Park,
Bishopdale, Te Kura Hagley and
Edgeware/Waimairi contest
the men’s competition, and the
women’s teams are Te Kura
Hagley, Bishopdale, Cashmere,
Elmwood, Shirley and Waimairi.
South Brighton is missing from
the men’s ranks this season while
in the women’s competition,
Cashmere is only fielding one
premier team and Shirley
rejoins the premier ranks after
dominating the Division One
grade.
Tennis Canterbury General
Manager Bevan Johns said the
competition format has changed
this season following player
feedback with a round, including
semi-finals and finals played
before Christmas, and a second
round starting on January 20,
2024, also with play-offs. If
different teams win both rounds,
they will contest a grand final in
March.
Captain of last year’s winning
Cashmere team Matt Meredith
supports the change, saying it
means more tennis for top-level
players. Cashmere is fielding the
same team at last year, with the
addition of highly ranked New
Zealand junior Alvin Na.
Meredith said Cashmere has
a policy of bringing in younger
players, including Liam Barrett
and Lucas Evans through into
premier ranks so they benefit
from playing alongside its
experienced core of players.
The team includes all Meredith
brothers, Matt, Tim and James,
Harry Weeds, and Johnny
McHarg, who returns after a
spell last season due to injury.
Burnside Park, Cashmere’s
competition on Saturday,
features club coach Remi Feneon,
Finn Emslie-Robson, Jordan
Edwards, Liam Adams and
Jaimie Poole. The team also has
a very strong division 1 team to
draw on for its premier team,
including nationally ranked
juniors, Jack Hansen Ratter and
Ricky Kotepong.
Bishopdale plays a strong,
unchanged Elmwood team
at Bishopdale and Edgeware
Waimairi plays Te Kura Hagley
at Edgeware.
In the women’s competition Te
Kura Hagley’s experienced lineup
including Beth Williamson,
Michele Kelsen, Adele Orangi,
Petra Belzova and Bailey Wilson
face an unknown in Shirley,
which includes sisters Casey
and Nicole Fitchett and Rebecca
and Aleisha McConnell. Former
Cashmere player Nishitha
Maarka joins Shirley as its likely
top player, along with Dasha
Sanina who has come through
the club’s junior ranks.
Te Kura Hagley captain Beth
Williamson, who credits her
team of “probably having the
highest average age” in the
competition, also supports the
format change.
“The competition is probably
the strongest it has been for a
number of years and this format
will keep it alive,” she said.
There will be a lot of interest
READY: Te Kura Hagley captain
Beth Williamson supports the
format change and said the
premier tennis competition is the
strongest it has been in years.
in the clash between Elmwood
and Bishopdale. Elmwood is
fielding an extremely strong
team boosted by the addition
of Louise Oxnevad, who played
college tennis in the United
States. The team includes the
Mason sisters, Abby and Emma,
and Tessa McCann, who played
for Cashmere last season.
Bishopdale’s line-up features
mother and daughter Joelene and
Jade Feneon, along with juniors
Aliyah Daley, Marija Filipovic
and Honor Barry.
Waimairi plays a formidable
Cashmere team which includes
Lucia Gale and Ruby Young who
are competing this week in the
International Tennis Federation
Junior 100 event at Wilding Park.
Gale is fifth seed in the
women’s draw and Young
seventh seed. In the men’s singles
local player Diego Quispe-Lim is
the top seed ahead of Australian
Cruz Hewitt, the son of tennis
great Leyton Hewitt.
Disappointing
end to season
for Canty Bulls
AN underwhelming season for
the once powerful Canterbury
Bulls has seen them lose 34-22
to Waikato Mana in the national
rugby league premiership
relegation match.
The defeat means the Bulls will
spend next year’s season striving
to regain a place in the premiership
from the second-tier national
championship.
Continuing the trend of their
winless pool stage, the Bulls
defensive lapses, poor completion
rate and inability to ice scoring
chances proved the difference
against a more clinical Waikato.
“It’s not a campaign we’re proud
of,” said Bulls captain Uale Peneli.
“We tried to put what happened
the last few weeks behind us and
try to come down and compete,
but we weren’t good enough.
“No excuses, just disappointed.”

YOUR YARD
Get your yard ready for warmer days
With warmer weather and longer days, the time for outdoor
living and entertaining is beckoning. So, be prepared by
completing a few simple tasks around your backyard to create
an inviting and relaxing space.
Refresh your deck or patio using a pressure washer and deck
cleaning product to clean off dirt, grime, algae, and fungus.
Refinishing or resealing your wood deck will bring it back
to life while extending its life. A few well-positioned screens,
trellises, or planters provide privacy and shelter, while raised
flower beds or hanging baskets add interest and colour to your
patio. Extend time outside by installing or positioning outdoor
lights and checking existing lights to ensure they are working.
Pergolas, shade sails or louvre roofs create another sheltered
outdoor space, while a built-in fireplace makes outdoor dining
cosy and inviting. Clean and wipe down that winter-stored
outdoor furniture, and repair or replace any cushions if
needed.
Kiwis love barbecuing, so before your first season’s cook-up,
do a deep clean of your barbecue by removing any fat in the
tray, then use a wire brush with hot, soapy water on the plate
and grill. After cleaning, heat them for several minutes and
once cool, wipe the surface with some cooking oil.
Check your fencing to ensure no repairs are needed and any
pool fencing is secure. A freshly painted or stained fence can
quickly refresh your yard’s look.
Improve your property’s appearance by weeding gardens,
removing dead leaves and growth and neatening flower bed
edges. Next, prune shrubs and trees to eliminate twiggy
growth and keep them looking tidy. Then grab your gardening
gloves and tools and prepare the soil, adding vibrant plants
and moisture-preserving mulch.
Spring is the perfect time to dethatch your lawn and fill bare
spots with suitable lawn seed. Applying lawn fertiliser now will
boost growth and prepare for the summer months. Lawns and
gardens benefit from irrigation or sprinklers, so if installed,
ensure they work correctly.
Whether investing in new lighting, furniture, or plants or
Top three the target for veteran
• By Jaime Cunningham
BARRY Washbourne will be
the oldest clay target shooter
at the Oceania continental
championships in Brisbane.
But that won’t stop the
Christchurch shooter from
firing on all cylinders against
competitors who weren’t even
born when he took up the
sport.
Throughout his 40-year career,
Washbourne has competed
in three different disciplines,
represented New Zealand 12
times and travelled the world.
This month, the two-time
national champion will compete
in the skeet events at the Oceania
competition for a fourth time.
Washbourne, 64, admits
the competition will be tough,
considering the majority are in
their 20s.
“I’m by far the oldest competitor
there,” he said.
“I’ve only taken on this discipline
in the last 10 years and
probably should’ve taken it up
40-odd years ago.”
But age is just a number for
Washbourne, who goes into the
competition as the second-ranked
New Zealander, behind Paul
Wilson. Washbourne scored
299 in his best three events since
September last year, while Wilson
top-scored with 322.
Washbourne will be looking
to improve on his best placing of
fifth, which he achieved in 2017.
“Obviously doing better than
fifth is the goal, a placing like
first, second or third would be
the best,” he said.
“Just as high of a result as I can
manage.”
He will also compete in the
new mixed pairs event with
Christchurch’s Chloe Tipple.
Eleven countries from Guam
to Norfolk Island will take part
in the eight-day, biennial event.
Because of Covid, it will be the
first Oceania competition since
2019.
Although there is one Paris
Olympic qualification up for
grabs, the ins and outs of being
able to qualify as the ‘quota’
makes Washbourne’s chances
difficult.
“It’s quite a long-winded
process and to be picked for
your country, you have to fly to
compete at the world (championships)
next year,” he said.
“Nine out of 10 miss the quota
to go to the Olympics due to the
certain requirements.
“And in New Zealand, they
expect you to finish in the top
15 (at the Olympics) – that’s the
standard they set.”
EXPERIENCE: Barry
Washbourne will
compete in his fourth
Oceania continental
championships, in
Brisbane this month.
patients
CANCER PATIENTS and their
visitors can now watch TV in
their rooms thanks to a Rotary
fundraising effort.
The Bishopdale-Burnside
Rotary Club has made a $20,000
donation to the Cancer Society
Canterbury from money raised
from its successful Bookarama.
The money will pay for TV sets
the society has installed in each of
its patient rooms.
Said the society’s chief executive
Nicola Coom: “We are very grateful
to the Bishopdale-Burnside
Rotary for their donation of
$20,000. This donation has meant
we have been able to purchase televisions
for each of the 50 patient
rooms.
“Patients come to us from all
over the South Island. They’re in
an unfamiliar city undergoing
cancer treatment, which can
mean they spend a fair amount
of their time in bed or exhausted,
she was four. Her dream is to
become a professional dancer,”
said her mother, Toni Soppet.
‘home away from home’ that we
strive to achieve.
