Festival fun

“The French-themed foods and
drinks went down well too. There are no
complaints from us,” said Dawkins.
“It was nice to see everyone enjoying
themselves and the weather stayed fine.”
The festival is held every two years and
celebrates Akaroa’s culture and heritage
as New Zealand’s only French settlement.
“We’re going to have a debrief shortly, and
begin to get ready for the next festival in
two years,” said Dawkins.
“I hope I’ll be organising the next one as
it really is a special festival.”

FIRST MAYOR: Nigel Harrison performs the role
of le premier mairie d’Akaroa at the Akaroa
French Festival on Saturday, where the arrival of
the first settlers was re-enacted (below left).
EVENTS: Le Parade began at the beach and
went to the recreation hub, while The Lady Killers
performed under the big top.
BIG TOP: Variety show Le Cabaret attracted more than
800 people.
