It has 200 pages of historical stories and photographs and was written and edited by brigade member Glen Walker with assistance from Jack Montgomery and Rod Twist. Lyttelton’s own Leon White Design pulled everything together to create a fascinating timeline that’s as much a history of Lyttelton as it is about the fire brigade itself. When you wrap all the facts, figures and a few giggles up together – what a history it’s been. The book could easily have been twice the size. Our 150th celebrations start with a meet and greet on Friday, October 20. There’s a static display of old and new fire appliances on Saturday, between 10am-2pm, followed that evening by a formal dinner in a marquee in the station car park. On Sunday, a morning of remembrance and reflection will be followed by a farewell barbecue. Books produced for the 100th and 125th anniversaries are still in circulation – this latest edition should be around in 2048 when the next 25-year chapter will be written about the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade. Registrations for the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade are open now. If you’re a past brigade member, know someone who is, or just want to celebrate the occasion with them, please email LVFB150th@gmail. com with your details and you’ll be sent the registration link. Risk-takers and innovators, when they bought the run-down 6500-hectare high-country sheep station at Lake Hawea, they embarked on a journey of discovery to rewrite long-held farming principles and ask whether sustainability could also be profitable. If we look after the land, will it look after us? Life in the mountainous landscape of the Main Divide isn’t for the faint hearted. But despite the freezing winters and scorching summer heat, the demands of fitting in with the locals and managing 10,000 merino sheep, the Ross family has never looked back. THIS BOOK Lola in the Mirror by Trent Dalton Bighearted, gritty, magical and moving, Lola in the Mirror is the irresistible new novel from international bestselling author of Boy Swallows Universe and All Our Shimmering Skies, Trent Dalton. ‘Mirror, mirror, on the grass, what’s my future? What’s my past?’ A girl and her mother have been on the run for sixteen years, from police and the monster they left in their kitchen with a knife in his throat. They’ve found themselves a home inside a van with four flat tyres parked in a scrapyard by the edge of the Brisbane River. The girl has no name because names are dangerous when you’re on the run. But the girl has a dream. A vision of a life as an artist of international acclaim. A life outside the grip of the Brisbane underworld drug queen ‘Lady’ Flora Box. A life of love with the boy who’s waiting for her on the bridge that stretches across a flooding, deadly river. A life beyond the bullet that has her name on it. And now that the storm clouds are rising, there’s only one person who can help make her dreams come true. That person is Lola and she carries all the answers. But to find Lola, the girl with no name must first do one of the hardest things we can ever do. She must look in the mirror. From international bestselling author Trent Dalton, Lola in the Mirror is a big, moving, blackly funny, violent, heartbreaking and beautiful novel of love, fate, life and death and all the things we see when we look in the mirror: all our past, all our present, and all our possible futures.
