alebrijes on display throughout the<br />

library, including at least four new<br />

creatures: Osito Emilia (Bear),<br />

El Kokoro (crocodile), Tochtli (rabbit)<br />

and Gigi (bear). Alebrijes stem<br />

from Mexican folklore and embody<br />

characteristics from many animals<br />

to form fantastical creatures.<br />

Smash composting event on <strong>Nov</strong>ember 4 (the first<br />

Saturday after Halloween) from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at<br />

the old library parking lot (corner of Grove and<br />

Kimball). Since 2016, Elgin has collected over 28.62<br />

TONS of pumpkins! Help us grow this number —<br />

bring your pumpkins so they can be composted<br />

instead of haunting a landfill.<br />

Holly Days Begins on Small Business<br />

Holly Days, presented by the Downtown<br />

Neighborhood Association (DNA), kicks off on<br />

Holiday Waste Reminders<br />

Shop Local This Holiday Season<br />

There can be a lot of extra waste around the holidays. Here are<br />

some reminders of what can and what cannot go in your<br />

curbside recycling carts.<br />

Cardboard boxes are recyclable (please flatten. If outside of<br />

container, cannot exceed 4’ x 4’).<br />

Wrapping paper is recyclable (unless it has glitter).<br />

Absolutely no plastic bags in your recycling bin.<br />

Holiday lights CANNOT be recycled in your curbside bin; they<br />

CAN be recycled through the At Your Door service or at a Kane<br />

County Recycles location.<br />

Toys do not go in the recycling cart. Donate toys in good<br />

condition to a local charity or use the Simple Recycling service.<br />

Christmas Tree Collection<br />

Christmas tree collection begins <strong>Dec</strong>ember 26: Trees are<br />

collected on your regular trash pickup day. This service is free to<br />

Elgin residents <strong>Dec</strong>ember 26 through Friday, January 12, after<br />

which one garbage sticker is required.<br />

All decorations, stands, etc. must be removed.<br />

Do NOT place trees in plastic bags.<br />

Must be free of snow/ice for curbside disposal.<br />

Must be placed on parkway (the area generally located<br />

between the street and sidewalk).<br />

When planning your holiday shopping, there’s no reason to stray far<br />

from home! Elgin offers many unique gift options. From national<br />

there’s an Elgin gift for every taste! Local businesses create local<br />

jobs, shopping local saves gas and time, and a portion of your sales<br />

tax comes directly back to the community. Get out and explore the<br />

At Your Door Special Collection<br />

Elgin residents have an easy and convenient way to dispose of household<br />

hazardous waste and to recycle electronics through the At Your Door<br />

service. You can schedule for household hazardous waste and electronics<br />

to be picked up at your residence, at no added cost, as part of your<br />

regular Waste Management service.<br />

Materials accepted include items such as automotive products, garden<br />

chemicals, paint products, household cleaners, electronics, and batteries.<br />

To schedule a pickup, contact Waste Management at 800-449-7587<br />

Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Find more information at<br />

Recordatorio sobre residuos Navideños<br />

Durante las festividades, suele generarse una gran cantidad de<br />

residuos adicionales. Aquí tienes algunos recordatorios sobre lo que<br />

puedes y no puedes depositar en tus contenedores de reciclaje.<br />

▪ Las cajas de cartón son reciclables (por favor, aplástalas. Si están<br />

fuera del contenedor, no deben exceder los 4' x 4').<br />

▪ El papel de regalo es reciclable (a menos que tenga brillantina).<br />

No se deben colocar absolutamente bolsas de plástico en tu bote<br />

de reciclaje.<br />

▪ Las luces navideñas NO pueden reciclarse en tu contenedor;<br />

pueden reciclarse a través del servicio “At Your Door” o en un lugar<br />

de reciclaje del Condado de Kane.<br />

▪ Los juguetes no deben colocarse en el contenedor de reciclaje.<br />
