Creatures of a Dream 

World Exhibit ES 

Throughout the Main Library 

Through January 7 

All ages. Explore 24 imaginary, colorful 

alebrijes on display throughout the 

library, including at least four new 

creatures: Osito Emilia (Bear), 

El Kokoro (crocodile), Tochtli (rabbit) 

and Gigi (bear). Alebrijes stem 

from Mexican folklore and embody 

characteristics from many animals 

to form fantastical creatures.

Exhibit Scavenger Hunt & 

Win Prizes ES 

Grab a scavenger hunt map at the Main 

Library and explore the exhibit to win 

prizes. New scavenger hunts will be 

offered every couple of weeks! 

Take a photo with your favorite alebrije 

and text it to 847-857-7740. Then, pick up 

a button with your picture on it at the 

Main Library drive-up window when you 

receive a text that it’s ready. One photo 

will be chosen at random on January 8 to 

win the grand prize: a creative art basket!

What goes into the development of a City 

budget and how are financial decisions made 

during the process? Learn about the City’s 

budget, the various funds, revenues and 

expenditures, special taxing districts, user fees

Commission will be hosting the annual Pumpkin 

Smash composting event on November 4 (the first 

Saturday after Halloween) from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 

the old library parking lot (corner of Grove and 

Kimball). Since 2016, Elgin has collected over 28.62 

TONS of pumpkins! Help us grow this number — 

bring your pumpkins so they can be composted 

instead of haunting a landfill.

send them to the North 

Pole for you! Place them 

in the drop box outside the main entrance of

necessary! Santa will send a letter back, so be 

sure to include a mailing address. 

Holly Days Begins on Small Business 

Saturday, November 25 

Holly Days, presented by the Downtown 

Neighborhood Association (DNA), kicks off on 

Small Business Saturday and continues 

throughout the month of December. This 

month-long event includes holiday window 

murals created by local artists, the return of 

Holiday Cheers, special events, a pop-up

Tree Lighting Ceremony 

Residents and visitors are invited to the annual 

tree lighting ceremony where Mayor Kaptain, 

members of City Council, and Santa turn on 

the holiday tree lights.

Holiday Waste Reminders 

Shop Local This Holiday Season 

There can be a lot of extra waste around the holidays. Here are 

some reminders of what can and what cannot go in your 

curbside recycling carts. 

Cardboard boxes are recyclable (please flatten. If outside of 

container, cannot exceed 4’ x 4’). 

Wrapping paper is recyclable (unless it has glitter). 

Absolutely no plastic bags in your recycling bin. 

Holiday lights CANNOT be recycled in your curbside bin; they 

CAN be recycled through the At Your Door service or at a Kane 

County Recycles location. 

Toys do not go in the recycling cart. Donate toys in good 

condition to a local charity or use the Simple Recycling service. 

Christmas Tree Collection 

Christmas tree collection begins December 26: Trees are 

collected on your regular trash pickup day. This service is free to 

Elgin residents December 26 through Friday, January 12, after 

which one garbage sticker is required. 

All decorations, stands, etc. must be removed. 

Do NOT place trees in plastic bags. 

Must be free of snow/ice for curbside disposal. 

Must be placed on parkway (the area generally located 

between the street and sidewalk). 

When planning your holiday shopping, there’s no reason to stray far 

from home! Elgin offers many unique gift options. From national 

chains to independent shops, to restaurants and entertainment, 

there’s an Elgin gift for every taste! Local businesses create local 

jobs, shopping local saves gas and time, and a portion of your sales 

tax comes directly back to the community. Get out and explore the 

area to discover how many wonderful gifts can be found just 

minutes from your house. 

At Your Door Special Collection 

Elgin residents have an easy and convenient way to dispose of household 

hazardous waste and to recycle electronics through the At Your Door 

service. You can schedule for household hazardous waste and electronics 

to be picked up at your residence, at no added cost, as part of your 

regular Waste Management service. 

Materials accepted include items such as automotive products, garden 

chemicals, paint products, household cleaners, electronics, and batteries. 

To schedule a pickup, contact Waste Management at 800-449-7587 

Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Find more information at

La ciudad de Elgin los invita a el evento de 

compostaje “Pumpkin Smash” el 4 de noviembre 

(el primer sábado después de Halloween) de 9 a.m. 

a 12 p.m. en el estacionamiento de la antigua 

biblioteca (esquina de Grove y Kimball). Desde 

2016, Elgin ha recolectado más de 28.62 

TONELADAS de calabazas. Ayúdanos a aumentar 

este número: trae tus calabazas para que puedan 

convertirse en abono en lugar de atormentarse en 

un basurero.

el buzón ubicado afuera de la 

entrada principal del Edward Schock Centre of

una estampilla de correo! Santa te devolverá

Holly Days empieza el 25 de noviembre 

“Holly Days,” presentado por el Downtown 

Neighborhood Association (DNA, por sus siglas en 

inglés), comienza el sábado de pequeños 

negocios y continúa durante todo el mes de 

diciembre. Este evento de un mes de duración 

incluye murales navideños en ventanas creados 

por artistas locales, el regreso de Holiday Cheers,

Recordatorio sobre residuos Navideños 

Durante las festividades, suele generarse una gran cantidad de 

residuos adicionales. Aquí tienes algunos recordatorios sobre lo que 

puedes y no puedes depositar en tus contenedores de reciclaje. 

▪ Las cajas de cartón son reciclables (por favor, aplástalas. Si están 

fuera del contenedor, no deben exceder los 4' x 4'). 

▪ El papel de regalo es reciclable (a menos que tenga brillantina). 

No se deben colocar absolutamente bolsas de plástico en tu bote 

de reciclaje. 

▪ Las luces navideñas NO pueden reciclarse en tu contenedor; 

pueden reciclarse a través del servicio “At Your Door” o en un lugar 

de reciclaje del Condado de Kane. 

▪ Los juguetes no deben colocarse en el contenedor de reciclaje. 

Dona juguetes en buen estado a una organización benéfica local o 

utiliza el servicio “Simple Recycling.” 

Recolección de árboles de Navidad 

La recolección de árboles de Navidad comienza el 26 de diciembre: 

Los árboles se recogerán en tu día regular de recolección de basura. 

Este servicio es gratuito para los residentes de Elgin desde el 26 de 

diciembre hasta el viernes, 12 de enero, después de lo cual se 

requerirá una calcomanía de basura. 

▪ Se deben retirar todas las decoraciones, soportes, etc. 

▪ NO coloques los árboles en bolsas de plástico. 

▪ Deben estar libres de nieve/hielo para su disposición. 

▪ Deben colocarse en la avenida (el área generalmente ubicada 

entre la calle y la acera).

regular de Waste Management! Los residentes de Elgin tienen una manera fácil 

y conveniente de deshacerse estos desechos a través del servicio “At Your Door.” 

Los materiales aceptados incluyen artículos como productos automotrices, 

productos químicos para el jardín, productos de pintura, productos de limpieza 

para el hogar, productos electrónicos y baterías. Para programar una recolección,
