Creatures of a 

Dream World ES 

Throughout the Main Library 

September 9 - January 7 

All ages. Explore imaginary, colorful 

alebrijes on display throughout the Library. 

"Alebrijes" stem from Mexican folklore, 

and embody characteristics from many 

animals to create fantastical creatures. 

The 20 (8 large and 12 small) sculptures 

include Goliath, a 16-foot deer, giraffe and 

eagle, and Lacuarium, a seahorse-meets-dragon.

Take a photo with your favorite alebrije and

the text. One photo will be chosen at random 

January 8 to win the grand prize: a creative

Battle of the Books is starting its 50th season! 

Students in public, private, and home schools read 

books from a set list and compete throughout 

the school year. A year-end event celebrates 

accomplishments and provides students with an 

opportunity to meet an author or illustrator. It is 

estimated that 18,500 kids have participated in the 

previous 49 years. This program is a collaborative 

with three public libraries: Gail Borden, Bartlett

New to the City of Elgin in 2023 is Hispanic Heritage Month: Canta 

con Orgullo (Sing with Pride) on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 

Festival Park in downtown Elgin. This event brings together community 

partners including the Gail Borden Public Library and the Friends of 

Masons, both known for their fantastic Hispanic Heritage Month 

celebrations. 

Activities will include a Mexican Independence Day car parade leading 

to Festival Park where event-goers can participate in the traditional 

“Grito de Independencia,” an interactive Frida Kahlo sculpture, live 

music by Somos Colombia, Trabucco, DJ Ayoo and Amor Prohibido: 

Selena Tribute Band, ballet folklorico performances, themed food and 

drinks and much more! The event culminates in a spectacular fireworks 

display at 9:00 p.m. 

Nightmare on Chicago Street 

The City of Elgin's annual Nightmare on 

Chicago Street continues in 2023! This 

year’s theme is “It’s all real. They are among 

us.” The Zombie Defense Initiative has 

prepared an experience that citizens can 

find nowhere else. With thrilling 

performances, pounding music, apocalyptic 

drinks, an array of food options, and an 

immersive environment, this will be a year

Elgin Short Film Festival 

The Elgin Short Film Festival (ESFF) will 

celebrate its 15th year on Saturday, 

September 23, 2023, with a hybrid 

event – in person viewing and a virtual 

screening option. 

Since 2009 the ESFF has become a 

world-wide competition, with entries 

from around the globe and prizes going 

to filmmakers from the US, Canada, Spain and South Korea. 

Welcoming an in-house audience as well as those screening the 

festival from afar, the 2023 ESFF is sure to be another impressive 

event showcasing the best in short cinema. 

There are two categories of films: Live action 

and animation. Prizes up to $1,000 plus a trophy!

Fall Leaf Collection Programs Begin in October 

Free Yard Waste Bag Collection 

Beginning October 2, WM (formally known as Waste Management) will not 

require stickers for yard waste bags as part of the fall leaf collection program. 

Bagged leaves are collected weekly on residents’ regular garbage pickup day. 

State law prohibits the disposal of leaves and other yard waste in landfills; 

therefore, these materials cannot be placed in plastic garbage bags or mixed 

with normal garbage. Leaf burning is prohibited in Elgin. 

Yard waste includes materials such as leaves, brush, branches, grass clippings, 

plants, weeds, and other similar waste. Yard waste must be placed in 

biodegradable paper bags (maximum 33 gallons and 45 pounds) for collection. 

Yard waste placed in plastic bags will not be collected. 

On-Street Leaf Collection 

Beginning Monday, October 30, weather permitting, the City of Elgin will collect 

leaves raked out into the street in designated areas. Leaves should be raked 

along the curb by 6:00 a.m. on the special collection day for the designated 

area, shown on the map to the right. Leaves placed in the street after the crews 

have passed will not be collected until the next scheduled date. Note: The 

on-street collection day may differ from your bagged leaf collection day. 

Key Dates & Information 

▪ October 2- No stickers required for yard waste bags 

begins, citywide. 

▪ October 30- On-street leaf collection begins in 

designated areas. 

▪ December 8- Last day of collection, weather 

permitting. 

▪ All yard waste bag pickups occur on residents' regular

▪ Avoid parking on streets on scheduled leaf collection 

days. Piles blocked by cars will not be collected.

This year Halloween takes place on 

Tuesday, October 31. Elgin’s official 

trick-or-treating hours are from 3:00 

p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Remember to stay 

visible, use sidewalks and if you are a 

participating home, please keep your 

exterior lights on. Have a safe and 

enjoyable Halloween! 

Don’t Care to Rake? Recycle Your Leaves 

As part of Elgin’s sustainability efforts, residents 

are encouraged to compost or mulch leaves 

into their lawn with a lawnmower. 

Mulching controls weeds, uses less fertilizer, 

enables better water infiltration, reduces thatch 

and improves soil quality.

Los programas de recolección de hojas de otoño comienzan en octubre 

Recolección gratuita de bolsas de residuos de jardín 

A partir del 2 de octubre, WM (formalmente conocido como Waste Management) no 

requerirá calcomanías para las bolsas de residuos de jardín como parte del programa de 

recolección de hojas de otoño. Las hojas embolsadas se recogen semanalmente en el 

día habitual de recolección de basura. 

La ley estatal prohíbe la eliminación de hojas y otros residuos de jardín en los 

vertederos; por lo tanto, estos materiales no se pueden colocar en bolsas de basura de 

plástico o mezclarse con la basura normal. Está prohibido quemar hojas en Elgin. 

Los residuos de jardín incluyen materiales como hojas, ramas, recortes de césped, 

plantas, malas hierbas y otros residuos similares. Los residuos de jardín deben colocarse 

en bolsas de papel biodegradables (máximo 33 galones y 45 libras) para su recolección. 

Los residuos de jardín colocados en bolsas de plástico no serán recogidos. 

Recolección de hojas de otoño en la calle 

A partir del lunes 30 de octubre, si las condiciones climáticas lo permiten, la Ciudad de 

Elgin recolectará las hojas que se hayan rastrillado y colocado en la calle en áreas 

designadas. Las hojas deben ser rastrilladas a lo largo del bordillo de la calle antes de 

las 6:00 a.m. en el día especial de recolección para el área designada, que se muestra 

en el mapa a la derecha. Las hojas colocadas en la calle después de que los equipos de 

limpieza hayan pasado no se recolectarán hasta la próxima fecha programada. Nota: El 

día de recolección de hojas en la calle puede ser diferente al día de recolección de 

bolsas de residuos. 

Por favor, no mezcle basura, ramas u otros desechos de jardín con las pilas de hojas. 

Evite estacionarse en la calle en los días programados de recolección de hojas; las pilas 

de hojas bloqueadas por autos no se recolectarán. 

Los residentes que vivan en áreas de recolección en la calle también pueden colocar 

hojas en bolsas de desechos de jardín para su recolección gratuita por parte de WM en 

los días regulares de recolección de basura del 2 de octubre al 8 de diciembre. 

Fechas clave e información 

▪ 2 de octubre: Comienza la recolección de bolsas de 

desechos de jardín sin necesidad de calcomanías en toda 

la ciudad. 

▪ 30 de octubre: Comienza la recolección de hojas de 

otoño en la calle en áreas designadas.

Book Sale. This sale will feature fiction and nonfiction, 

including large collections of military history, JFK, 

Civil War, cookbooks, vintage science fiction, mystery
