Iread with interest the latest report from the NSSF regarding the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) check for the month of August 2023. Looking at NICS data is a fairly reliable way to determine how many people are buying guns in the US and therefore the current trend of the market. NICS were brought in back in 1993 and 32 States participate. The August 2023 numbers show a decrease from this time last year, by just over 13 per cent, which is hardly surprising given the huge rise in gun ownership during and Covid and post Covid times. The crazy high numbers were never going to continue. A decrease can be seen as a negative in some quarters, but given the unprecedented demand, shortages in stock, and general panic this huge upsurge in purchasing has had, I’m willing to bet some companies out there will be happy that this slow down gives them time to plan and focus on other parts of their business, rather than a mad dash to provide guns, gun parts, ammunition to their hordes of new customers. The Covid boom has provided a shot in the arm for countless manufacturers and numbers are still way higher than pre Covid – all growth can be seen as great but steady growth represents a realistic and achievable long-term objective. We have seen many companies grow too quickly over the years here at GTW and, unfortunately, this often concludes with the same ending. I’d like to think that the two to three-year boost has given many companies across the globe that increased level of income to allow investment across the company, rather than just trying to get stock out of the door. Take a breather, reassess, plan, and move forward.
