Fast-track to success

ANTHONY KUTOVOY is 

weeks away from the next step 

in a promising future in speed 

skating. 

The St Andrew’s College year 

11 student will compete in the 

junior world cup speed skating 

series in the Netherlands in late 

November and early December. 

After winning the national 

title for the sub junior men 

(under 15) division at the New 

Zealand open short track 

championship in Dunedin in 

September, he gained entry to 

the first two junior world cups. 

At these competitions, he will 

be seeking to qualify for a third 

junior world cup and the junior 

world championship, held in 

February 2024. 

“At the Dunedin competition, 

I also set a new record in the 

1000m distance for my age 

group,” said Anthony. 

“Since I’ve started skating, 

I have improved a lot . . . as 

well as being the New Zealand 

champion for my age group.” 

The 15-year-old is part of 

the Canterbury Alpine Ice 

Skating Club. He has been 

skating since 2019, originally 

for the Mainland Ice Racing 

Club before transferring to 

Canterbury Alpine in 2021. 

Said the Parklands resident: 

“One of the things that caught 

my eye with short track is the 

competitiveness and adrenaline 

of trying to hit your top speed 

and push your boundaries. 

“All while having to try to 

pass and block other skaters. I 

love skating because you get to

compete overseas against other, 

like-minded people whose goal 

is like mine – to be the best version 

of myself.” 

Anthony said he is training 

six times a week with 

Canterbury Alpine coach Ben 

Whiteside. 

The first junior world cup 

is from November 26 to 

27. Anthony and his coach 

have self-funded flights for 

November 18, to train in 

the Netherlands for a week 

beforehand. 

“It is very hard to train in 

New Zealand with the very 

limited ice time and old equipment,” 

said Anthony. 

“(Speed skating) is very 

competitive and requires a lot of 

training and self-improvement, 

which results in a healthy 

lifestyle.”

A NEW right-turn arrow 

installed at a busy Hornby 

intersection is being described 

by Hornby Ward city councillor 

Mark Peters as “an absolute 

win and great work by the 

community”. 

The Greater Hornby 

Residents Association started 

advocating for a green arrow 

from Amyes Rd turning right 

into Shands Rd about five years 

ago. 

The push for the arrow 

came after the intersection’s 

traffic light poles had been 

hit by several vehicles and an 

18-month-long wait for a new 

pole to be installed prevailed. 

“The Hornby residents’ 

association has been advocating 

for that for a very long time 

and I as their councillor have 

been working on it in the 

background to pull it over the 

line and actually get it installed 

at the same time the new light 

pole went in,” Peters said. 

Peters said common sense 

prevailed in getting the turning 

arrow installed. 

“I said to them for goodness 

sake you’ve got to put the new 

right turn arrow at the same 

and they did.”

HOW DO taekwondo 

competitors become chefs? They 

know tai-cheese and how to kick 

the right flavour. 

Canterbury University student 

Jemesa Landers will be taking 

orders for home-baked cheese 

rolls until tomorrow afternoon 

to help raise funds for her trip to 

the Taekwondo Pacific Games 

and Oceania Championships. 

The two competitions, both 

held in the Solomon Islands at 

the end of November, are fully 

self-funded for Landers and her 

coach, Nadia van Vliet. 

“I haven’t seen a cheese roll 

fundraiser for a long while, so 

thought this would be a perfect 

way to earn a little bit towards 

the trip. Everyone loves cheese 

rolls,” said Landers. 

“I am really looking forward 

to the championships – it’s taken 

a lot of planning and training 

and will be epic,” she said. 

“This will be the second time 

I represent (New Zealand) at the 

same international competition. 

“The last time I went was in 

2018, when I gained a bronze 

medal, so I am hoping for a 

similar or better result.” 

The 22-year-old has competed 

at several key competitions 

throughout the year including 

the national team qualifier, the 

Kukkiwon Cup, held in Auckland 

in August. 

Landers goes to Kennedy’s 

Freestyle Marshall Arts club in 

Wigram. After starting taekwondo 

at age 12, she has reached 

first-dan black belt level. 

“The cup and games are the 

perfect opportunity for a more 

specialised focus on competing,” 

said Landers. 

“It is a bit of a dream to 

become professional with 

taekwondo – but it is a minority 

sport with little support. 

“It is an honour to represent 

New Zealand and I’m looking 

forward to pushing myself.” 

Landers said she has already 

had about 60 orders which adds 

up to “more than 200 dozen 

cheese rolls”. 

“There are even some rolls 

being sent to Invercargill – the 

community has really gotten 

behind us,” said Landers. 

“You can purchase the rolls 

until Friday afternoon, which 

will be made with love in a foodsafe 

kitchen on the weekend,” 

she said.

Guiding the way for young girls 


CIARA GIBSON has just 

returned from representing New 

Zealand at an international Girl 

Guiding governance forum. 

Now, the 20-year-old 

Canterbury University student 

wants to see more girls step up to 

leadership positions. 

Gibson, who lives in Ilam, 

was selected as one of two New 

Zealand representatives at the 

38th World Association of Girl 

Guiding and Girl Scouting world 

conference in Cyprus. 

About 400 delegates from 106 

countries attended the event 

to discuss strategy, policy and 

leadership at a global level, elect 

new world board members 

and participate in a range of 

workshops. 

Gibson said the conference 

connected her with other people 

around the world who are 

passionate about empowering 

young women. 

“But I also learned young 

women can have much more 

of a voice on numerous issues 

and take advantage of a whole 

range of different opportunities 

compared to our peers in some 

other countries,” she said. 

“Guides has inspired me over 

the years and has offered me 

a wonderful chance to really 

challenge myself and to learn 

and grow. 

“I want to offer the same 

support and mentoring to other

girls and young women who 

may want to become the leaders 

of tomorrow, or who may just 

want to have fun and enjoy new 

challenges with a great group of

national board, as the young 

leader representative, and was 

a member of the national girl 

advisory group, which focuses 

on giving young women a voice 

within the organisation. 

She has also attained the 

Queen’s Guide award (the 

highest achievement in guiding) 

and has served as both a leader 

and co-ordinator for the central 

South Island region. 

“It sometimes takes guts 

to put your hand up and step 

out of your comfort zone, and 

that’s where I’ve been lucky as a 

Girl Guide,” she said. 

“It’s important for girls to see 

other girls in leadership positions 

and Guiding has been invaluable 

in that respect. The organisation 

has done so much to help me 

overcome those barriers and help 

me become a leader.” 

Gibson didn’t have to look 

far for inspiration to become 

a Girl Guide. Her mother and 

both of her grandmothers were 

Guides, and her father and both 

her grandfathers were involved 

in Scouting. She joined the 

organisation aged 7 as a Brownie. 

Her mum, Sharon, is still a 

Guide leader and her younger 

sister, Brianna, is also a leader. 

Established in 1908, 

GirlGuiding NZ offers a 

non-competitive learning 

environment which is openminded 

and values-based. 

“It’s a supportive place to grow 

confident, adventurous girls 

who are ready to be tomorrow’s 

leaders,” said Gibson. 

“Given its strong focus on 

inclusivity, and given the 

challenges girls and young 

women face in today’s society, 

it’s a special place where girls 

and young women can learn 

new skills, create lifelong 

connections, and nurture 

personal growth and confidence. 

“There’s still much more we 

need to do at home to encourage 

young Kiwi women to step 

up. Our ‘tall poppy’ syndrome 

means we often still hold 

ourselves back.”

With its bold looks, digital 

capabilities, and upgraded ride 

and handling, Hyundai expects 

this Tucson to add significantly

for most driving situations. 

These attributes make light work 

of undulating roads and long 

energy draining uphill grinds. 

The plug-in has an all-electriconly 

range of up to 65km, similar 

to several rivals including the 

Mitsubishi Eclipse and Ford 

Escape. Both pack a much lighter 

performance punch than the 

heavy hitting Tucson PHEV’s 

195kW. 

For a model with glowing 

fuel economy credentials, the 

test car was disappointing. I 

knocked off a 500km roadie in 

it with four adults on board, on 

a trip covering some sections 

of hilly driving, and averaged 

Ratings out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 7; Build 

Quality 7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Avg fuel 

consumption on road test 6.8L/100km; Value for money 6; 

Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating. No clean car fee.

north of the claimed 1.5L/100km. 

This might be doable in low 

speed town driving when the car 

can spend extended periods in 

EV mode, but well out of reach 

on open road romps. 

Expertly managing what is 

one of the more potent non-full 

EV’s on Hyundai New Zealand’s 

books is a smart rework of 

the company’s proven 7-speed 

automatic. 

For a compact SUV, front and 

rear legroom is adequate rather 

than generously provisioned. I 

found the rear door openings 

too narrow to easily navigate 

bulkier items through, like child
