Finishing Yearbook 2024

Welcome to the 46th edition of the Finishing Industries Yearbook – the essential guide for everyone involved in the UK surface treatment industry. Each year I write a little note about the events of the past year, and how they have affected the industry. Like most my age we only seem to recall the difficulties faced over the past year. However, it is always good to read how the industry circumnavigates each situation. We hope that you find this edition an invaluable aid to sourcing suppliers to provide the solution to your specific needs. It is used by the whole buying chain from trade finishing houses to manufacturers of a wide variety of products from white goods to automotive. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the businesses that have contributed to the compilation of this yearbook. If you have any comments, suggestions or would like to be included in the next edition, please email me at b.williams@turretgroup.com. The Buyers’ Guide categories have been updated this year with the new headings of “Lubricants/Grease” and “Solvent Recovery’. In the Regional Guide, there is the new category of “Chemical Etching & Etch Inspection”. The Finishing Industries Yearbook Team & Finishing Industries Magazine Team wish you all the very best for 2024!

14 COMPANY PROFILE
The purpose of attaching protective film to profiles for windows,
doors and façades
The surface of painted profiles,
which may be scratched when
manipulated during processing,
should already be provided with
protective film before initial processing.
Customer claims due to
damaged surfaces are reduced to
a minimum as a result. Before
foiling the surface is checked and,
as a result of the film, the quality
is maintained up to the delivery
of the finished product. The film
remains on the surface during all
machining processes and is
usually only removed after the
installation of a window.
The profile, which is inserted
manually or via powered roller
conveyors into the filming
machine, is conveyed with a drive
up to the knurling machine.
Usually only one side is foiled in
the process, but two-sided foiling
is also possible. The beginning of
the profile is detected by the
control system, the film is pressed
on fully automatically and cut off
automatically at the end. The
machine itself communicates with
the downstream machine to
synchronise and optimise speeds.
Autonomous applications are
possible too.
For autonomous applications,
different versions are available
for one-sided up to four-sided
wrapping. The machines can
easily be adapted to very
different profile shapes. The
profiles are manually inserted or
via roller conveyor fed into the
wrapping machine. The film (a
maximum of 4 pages at a time)
is continually being pressed on
and cut off automatically at the
end of a profile.
In addition to a good throughput
speed, high demands are
made on the performance of the
machine regarding blistering and
the placement of the film on the
profile. The film itself also has an
impact on its clean attachment.
The adhesive power of the selfadhesive,
as well as the ultimate
elongation of the film, plays an
important role in this. Good
results can be achieved with an
adhesive strength of 260cN / 20
mm and a thickness of 80-100
my. Thinner films are often used
as well. In the case of structured
colours, films with a significantly
higher adhesive strength need to
be used. After foiling, it must be
borne in mind that the profiles or
finished windows are not
exposed to direct sunlight, as
residues of the film may form in
the surface coating as a result.
AkzoNobel Powder Coatings enhances digital services with
launch of My Interpon Portal – your gateway to future success
AkzoNobel has launched My
Interpon Portal, an extended
digital e-commerce platform
with enhanced features and
functionalities to give customers
fast, easy access to the
information and products they
need to keep their powder
coating lines rolling and stay one
step ahead of the competition.
My Interpon Portal is much
more than an online shop for
customers to buy Interpon
products; instead it is a central
online resources platform. It helps
coaters to discover the world’s
leading range of Interpon powder
coatings, and their use and
application in protecting and
enhancing a range of different
products and structures, inside
and out.
More than this, it enables
them to see and experience how
a multitude of colors and textures
will perform through a 3D lightbox
color visualization tool to a
degree of accuracy and realism
not possible before in a virtual
environment.
Intelligent features and
functionality enable customers to
easily navigate the site and search
for, find and compare hundreds
of Interpon products, including
the very latest low-energy (Low-E)
powder coatings, all at the touch
of the button. Administration has
also been made easy, to manage
new, ongoing and repeat orders.
A Track and Trace feature enables
customers to see how their order
is progressing, while past and present
invoices can also be accessed,
reviewed, printed, and filed.
Ordering has also been made
simple: users can instantly see
what’s in stock and how quickly
they can get the powder coatings
they need, with the corresponding
technical specification data
which can be downloaded to
help them make the right
decision. Customers can also
quickly re-order products that
they use most often.
My Interpon Portal is yet
another example of how Interpon
is helping customers see,
experience and use powder
coatings, and realise a new world
of possibilities. As Jeff Jirak,
Director of AkzoNobel’s Powder
Coatings business explains, the
launch is further evidence of
AkzoNobel’s commitment to
customers:
“We strive to make things
easier for our customers with
practical tools and support that
makes us collectively more
efficient. A significant development
of our existing e-commerce
site, we will continue to enrich
and enhance the functionality of
My Interpon Portal with new
features to help customers access
the powder coatings they need
for the most urgent of urgent
jobs.”
