Did you always want to be in<br />
real estate?<br />
No, I wanted to be a doctor<br />
from the age of about eight.<br />
So I did health sciences and a<br />
pre-med course but my grades<br />
weren’t good enough to get me<br />
into medical school. I started<br />
a science degree but lost my<br />
passion for it and didn’t finish.<br />
It was clearly the right decision<br />
because I think I’m a better real<br />
estate agent than I would have<br />
been a doctor.<br />
I’d always worked in<br />
hospitality because my dad is<br />
a chef and my parents owned<br />
cafes and restaurants. I went<br />
to London when I was 20<br />
and ended up working as a<br />
concierge at one of the top<br />
hotels in London, the Radisson<br />
Marlborough, in Tottenham<br />
Court Rd. I was booking<br />
theatre tickets, parking cars,<br />
carrying bags . . . all sorts of<br />
customer service jobs. It was a<br />
great experience. I met a lot of<br />
diverse people from different<br />
cultures and socio-economic<br />
backgrounds. It helped me to<br />
learn how to handle people and<br />
how to get the best results for<br />
them. Hotels are about client<br />
experience and our real estate<br />
business is based around that as<br />
well.<br />
How did you end up in real<br />
estate?<br />
I came back to New Zealand<br />
after six years and didn’t really<br />
know what I was going to do. My<br />
auntie and uncle, Dianne and<br />
Errol Hussey, were ex-Harcourts<br />
agents and business owners<br />
and they kind of pushed me<br />
towards it. <strong>The</strong>y introduced me<br />
to John and Lynette McFadden<br />
at Harcourts Gold in Papanui<br />
and we got on well. I could see a<br />
future in it.<br />
<strong>The</strong> thing that appealed to<br />
me was that it was really about<br />
people, rather than houses, and<br />
I knew I could deal with people<br />
well. It helped having come from<br />
the job in London, where I had to<br />

do your job better. We can be<br />
dealing with people in highly<br />
tuned situations, especially if<br />
they’re selling because they’re<br />
going through a separation or<br />
having to sell under pressure.<br />

Did you get off to a flying<br />
start, or did it take a while?<br />
I was lucky to be able to work<br />
with Mark O’Loughlin, one of<br />
the top agents in Canterbury<br />
at the time. I spent four years<br />
shadowing him, which I<br />
guess was an apprenticeship.<br />
Suddenly I was going to all these<br />
