Astep of faith has award winning outcome
Modbod Facial Rejuvenation Clinic was awarded the Professional
Services Award at the recent North Canterbury Business Awards.
Reporter John Cosgrove talks with owner Pea Blackwood.
ModBod had humble beginnings ina
small room in Rangiora’s High Street, in
2012.
‘‘I was by myself in alittle space behind
ahair salon,’’ says owner Pea Blackwood.
ARegistered Nurse for over 10 years,
Pea harboured an interest in aesthetics,
and was interested in the surgical aspects
of the beauty industry.
She quickly realised she had abit of a
creative streak, taking her into the
appearance and cosmetic medicine side of
the industry.
She worked for an appearance
medicine company, before branching out
on her own.
‘‘It was astep of faith –Istarted with
nothing. It was agroundlevel opening. My
young daughter was my inspiration to
make something of myself.’’
That step of faith earned Pea the North
CanterburyBusiness Awards Professional
Services Award at the recent awards
hosted by Enterprise North Canterbury.
Pea comes from afamily of business
owners, and attributes her success to the
support and guidance they have given her.
After two years she moved into bigger
premises, then two years later moved into
112 High Street.
‘‘The business had grown well and I
started to hire people to do the beauty
therapy side of the business, which is
completely different from the appearance
medicine side of the operation.’’
She created aonestop shop for her
clients with all the related beauty
elements in one place.
She purposely built five individual
clinical rooms in the building –four
beauty therapy rooms and one clinic for
injectables.
That went well until staff started to
move on, so Pea made changes to work
smarter.
‘‘I wanted to continue to make the
business profitable, but Iwanted to also
ease the workload on me by finetuning it.’’
She achieved her goal by renting the
rooms out to other women entrepreneurs,
people with the same vision as her.
‘‘It made the spaces and the costs more
accessible for them.’’
From this new plan, she created the
ModBod Wellness Hub, where there are
counsellors, massage therapists, beauty
therapists and amole cancer screening
unit.”
She says there is such alovely dynamic
working there.
‘‘We have all done the hard yards and
our clients love the relaxed vibe we have
there.’’
This ensured the hub was not just about
injectables, botox fillers and facial nonsurgical
restructuring, but also about
wellness and beauty therapy.
Pea says winning the professional
services award, blew her mind.
‘‘I had never thought of applying before.
Iwas always so busy and Ihad put it in the
‘too hard basket’.
“But this year Ifelt it was time to enter
so Isat down and filled out the application
form.’’
It took Pea two weeks to complete the
application.
‘‘It was like sitting auniversity paper,’’
she says.
‘‘Winning was amazing. It felt like one of
those ‘you go girl’ moments. It was very
humbling to win.’’
When she was being interviewed for the
award she says they had abox of tissues on
hand because it got so emotional
recounting her journey. There is so much
depth needed to make any business
successful. It can’t be all about you and it
can’t be just about money.
‘‘It’s got to be about all the other people
and doing things right, ticking the boxes
and making it profitable.’’
People make asuccessful business, Pea
says.
Shaping local alcohol laws in the HurunuiDistrict
Limits for alcohol at speciallicenced
events in the Hurunui District will be
reviewed on acasebycase basis.
This is part of Hurunui District
Councils Local Alcohol Policy (LAP)
which was adopted on Tuesday
afternoon, and which comes into force on
Friday, March 1, 2024..
The LAP outlines how alcohol is
bought, sold and where it can be
consumed within our district. By law it
has to be reviewed every six years.
Throughout September apublic
consultation process invited members of
the community to submit their thoughts
on the Draft LAP.
This opportunity was taken up by the
general public, the local wine industry,
and health organisations.
The hearing enabled councillors to
receive both oral and written
submissions prior to deliberating and
adopting the final LAP.
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black, who
chaired the meeting, said it was
encouraging to hear from the community.
‘‘It’s afarreaching one that has an
impact on individuals, communities and
businesses,’’ she said.
Many of the Policy’s draft proposals
were adopted as discretionary, giving the
District Licensing Committee (DLC) the
ability to review applications on acasebycase
basis, and introduce conditions
where deemed appropriate. Mrs Black
said this was avery positive outcome,
reflecting the genuine and honest nature
of the formal consultation process of the
Draft LAP. ‘‘We wanted to hear from our
community, listen to what they had to say,
and adopt apolicy to best fit the needs of
everyone in Hurunui.’’
The LAP, can be viewed at hurunui.
Change has been aconstanttheme of
Paul Donnelly’s five years at Rangiora
High School.
Mr Donnelly is retiring from his
position as the school’s first associate
principal.
He was appointedin2018 with abrief
of supporting innovative change at the
school
‘‘The school had just come out of a
difficult period and education in
general was navigating immense
change, both nationally and
internationally.
‘‘The students that we serve, their
world is quite differentfrom the world
us older teachers grew up in, and so our
response to our students’needs, desires
and dreams has to be different.’’
The school had justgone through a
period of being managed by a
commissioner, following the Board of
Trustees resigning over adispute with
then principal Peggy Burrows, who
subsequently left.
Mr Donnelly said school was no longer
‘‘just about bells and periods being used
to teachknowledge’’.
‘‘It is about how do we create models
to move away from an industrial model
of education, and Ithink primary
schools do it better than us with their
holistic approach.
‘‘At high school we move into
specialisation which is important, but it
has to be balanced.’’
He said it was about building
relationships and gettingtoknow young
people, ‘‘what makes them tick and what
drives them’’.
He believed there were ‘‘three
fundamental premisesofeducation’’
gentleness, truth and beauty, which
transcended culture,age and gender.
But there was adanger of getting stuck
Paul Donnelly
in amindset of passingexams and
gettingcredits.
Education had lost touch with
spiritually, but the introduction of Māori
tikanga was helpingyoung people to
reconnect, which could improve
wellbeing.
New technology was a‘‘wonderful
tool’’, but it could also be abarrier for
those unable to access it.
‘‘We don’t know what the future is
going to hold, we have some indications,
but we are really alittle bit blind to it,’’
Mr Donnelly said.
‘‘So recognising who we are now as
good and beautiful people allows us to
develop the skills and knowledge for
tomorrow.’’
During his time at the school, Mr
Donnelly worked with other agencies
including the Ministry of Social
Development, Ministry of Education, the
Waimakariri and Hurunui District
Councils, ComCol North Canterbury and
local schools to establish Youth Futures
North Canterbury.
Rangiora High School hosted three
Youth Futures careers expos, with next
year’s expo moving to Mainpower
Stadium.
This year he has been involved in
revitalising the school’s sports and arts
programmes.
‘‘My leadership has simply been about
giving people the freedom giving them
the funds and the space to do it.’’
Mr Donnelly said he would be taking
some time out before deciding on his
next career path, but he was not ready to
retire.
One concern he did have was the
pressures on principals.
‘‘The life span of amodern principal is
pretty short and that is saying something
to us as anation.’’
He said Rangiora’s principal Bruce
Kearney needed to be ‘‘nurtured, cared
for and loved’’.
Board of Trustees presiding member
Simon Green said the associate
principal role was created due to the
complexity of leadership in aschool of
1600 students.
‘‘Paul quickly established astrong
desire to help Rangiora High School
promote its kind and nurturing learning
environment, while at the same time
challenging ākonga to be the very best
they can be.’’
Mr Green said Mr Donnelly would be
remembered for quoting Henry David
Thoreau’s words: ‘‘suck the marrow out
of life’’ and encouraging others to live in
the moment.
Police Station’sfuture in limbo
By SHELLEY TOPP
The future of Rangiora’sformer police
station remains in limbo as
negotiations between NgāiTahu
Property and New Zealand Police
continue.
The building was closed in
September 2019 for aseismic
assessment after safety concerns were
raised about the building during
refurbishment work.
It was found to be nonrepairable and
condemned.
In 2021 the building was declared
‘‘surplustopolice needs’’, and the fourstep
Crown disposal process began.
After it was deemed the land was not
needed for any other public works, and
Land Information New Zealand
confirmed the property was exempt
from abuyback requirement, the
property was offered to NgāiTahu
under theTreaty of Waitangi
settlement process, Right of First
Refusal.
ANew Zealand Police spokesperson
says the property has been offered to
NgāiTahu, but nine months has lapsed
without adecision being made, so areoffer
is now required.
‘‘NgāiTahu have been working
constructively with NZPolice on this
matter and we are in regular
communication.''
ANgāiTahu Property spokesperson
declined to say whether adecision on
the future of the property was likely to
be made soon.
‘‘Due to commercial sensitivities,
NgāiTahu Property does not comment
on potential development
opportunities,’’ the spokesperson said.
If NgāiTahu Property decides not to
accept the reoffer, the property will be
sold on the open market.
New Zealand Police do not intend to
demolish the building as part of the
divestment. ‘‘This decision will be
made by the new owner,’’ the
spokesperson said.
History of path finders captured
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Another book capturing atreasuretrove
of history from the HawardenWaikari
district, is due to be released next
month.
The book, Our Path Finders II,the fifth
in aseries, captures achievements,
wider family links, stories and some
tragedies, of men born in the district
between 1920 to 1940 era.
From an initial list of 306 names,
biographies for 180 men born in the 1920
to 1940 date range were received by an
enthusiastic committee working on the
project.
As with an earlier book in the series,
Apron Strings II,the opportunity has
also been taken to include agroup
missed from the earlier Path Finder
book.
The five book series had its beginnings
in 2007 when acommittee of the
Waipara Country Historical Society was
formed to produce abook called Our
Apron Strings.
The book recalled the lives of 170
women, born before 1920, who had lived
in the HawardenWaikari district.
The publication proved to be popular
and, after four reprints, 740 copies have
been sold.
Our Guardians of Freedom followed. It
was published in 2010.
This book documented service in the
six wars between 1899 and 1975, with 335
copies being sold.
The third book, — Our Path Finders —
included men born up to 1920. Again,
this was very successful and, when it was
released in December 2015, 350 copies
were sold.
Book 4followed — Our Apron Strings
II.
Published in December 2022, it
included some women who were missed
from the first book, but the main dates
were 1920 to 1940.
The initial print run of 350 copies was
quickly sold, and areprint was ordered
to meet ongoing demand. Asecond
reprint is now on order.
The committee was unable to contact a
significant number on its list for the fifth
book, who had come and gone from the
district leaving memories but ‘‘no
forwarding address’’.
Several who made the list were found
to have been born later, and afew
declined to participate.
Book five will be launched at the
Hawarden Hall on Saturday December
2, at 2pm. Copies will be available for
sale for $50. There is no Eftpos facility.
Advance orders can be made to Janet
Jensen on 0273350111.
Seniors taking care
of grandchildren
By JOHN COSGROVE
Mostseniors are free to enjoy friend’s
company, travel and retirement.
But sadly for agrowingnumber, life
inadvertently throws them acurve ball,
which can see them looking after young
childrenoreven babies.
Due to circumstancesbeyond their
control, they have become parents again
at atime far removed from when they
had their children.
They become the principal caregivers
to their grandchild, while coping with
the sometimesdire or fraught
circumstanceswhich caused the
children’s upheaval.
Where do they go for schooling
information, primary medical care,
financialassistance or even to answer
any of the 101 questions about modern
childcare that they are now facing daily?
Community Wellbeing North
Canterbury Trust’sclinical operations
leader Julie Best says it is often alonely
job raisingyour grandchildren but the
the trust is there to help.
‘‘Some grandparents are in their late
70s or 80s and suddenly they have to take
care of anewborn baby or teenager.
‘‘It’stricky for them and they don’t
know where to turn to for support, all
while trying to be substitute parents for
kids used to acompletely different
lifestyle.’’
She says grandparents soon find their
social lives disappearing as friends don’t
understand why they can’tcome out
anymore to play golf, ride or socialise.
Then there is the reason behind this
sudden change of circumstances and
how the grandparents try their best to
shield their grandchildren, all while
trying to support whichever of their
children is also in trouble.
Marcus and Vicki have custody of two
grandchildren described by them as
two ‘‘fullon’’boys, 11 and 12 years old.
Both have been diagnosed with
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).
Marcus and Vicki took custody of the
children 10 years ago when the children
were infants.
If they had not obtained custody, the
children would have been placed in
foster care.
They already had four children ,two of
whom still live at home, along with the
grandchildren in their care.
Joining Community Wellbeing’s
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
support group in 2020, Vicki says they
now know they are not on their own, and
there are many others in the same
situation.
‘‘You are doing something that you
didn’t expect to do, but knowing that
other people are doing it and this little
group of people can get together and
share stories of what has been going on
is abig help,’’ Marcus says.
The Community Wellbeing
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
support group often has up to 14 people
attending the meetings, held several
times during the school terms.
Floating with Whio —mural
By SHELLEY TOPP
Rangiora artist Mel Eaton
has completed her awardwinning
mural, Floating with
Whio.
Mel was one of 10 New
Zealand artists who won the
top prize in Keep New
Zealand Beautiful’sResene
Nature Mural Competition
2023.
The large 36 square metre
mural, painted on the
exterior of the Dudley Park
Toilet block, is designed to
help raise awareness of New
Zealand’s unique
biodiversity and the
challenges facing it.
‘‘This mural is apeaceful
portrait of our native New
Zealand wetland duck, the
whio and our connection to
the waterways we share,’’
says Mel.
‘‘Floating With Whio is
inspired by flowing water and
our native blue ko whio whio
ducks.
‘‘This mural has really
livened up this area in
Dudley Park, Rangiora, and
makes the skate park, courts
and greenspace an even more
fun place for our local
families to visit.’’
The Resene Nature Mural
Competition is part of the
Paint New Zealand Beautiful
programme and ran from
April to June 2023.
Community members were
asked to submit
environmentallythemed
mural designs to paint on a
wall in their local
community. Artists from
around New Zealand sent in
their designs, with the top ten
murals selected in June
based on their environmental
message, enhancement of the
community, and originality/
creativity.
The winners have been
given up to 12 months to bring
their mural to life.
The winning artists receive
a$1000 commission on
completion of their mural,
along with a$750 Resene
paint voucher and other
materials to paint their
mural.
Keep New Zealand
Beautiful CEO Heather
Saunderson says the Resene
Nature Mural Competition
provides agreat opportunity
for artists to beautify their
local communities.
‘‘The beautification of
public spaces greatly benefits
communities by increasing
civic pride, deterring
vandalism, and reducing
antisocial behaviour such as
littering and graffiti,” she
says. ‘‘We were impressed
with the dozens of highcalibre
entries we received,
so much so that narrowing
the selection to just ten
winners was atough task!
‘‘Mel’s mural is one of the
first of the 2023 murals to be
fully completed.
‘We are thrilled to see the
result, and we are excited to
watch the other talented
winning artists bring their
murals to life around
Aotearoa.’’
Around the electorate with
STUART SMITH MP FOR KAIKOURA
Next year will be an
excitingchallenge
At the time of writing, we are still
waitingfor aGovernmenttobeformed;
nevertheless, next year promises a
muchneeded shift in political direction
that the public overwhelmingly voted
for.
Theshortcomings of the electoral
processes are atopic for another day,
but suffice it to say that changes will
have to be made in theprocesses that led
to the drawnout interregnum period
with all the associated costs to our
economy.
The promised dry conditions expected
from El Nino have started to bite just at
atime when many farmers feel the
financial pinch from lower prices and
rising costs.
The New Zealand economyhas always
relied on agriculture to help pay our way
in the world, and climatic challenges are
part and parcel of agriculture, but there
is no doubt we are all in this together.
In Parliament Ilook forward to
continuing with my Members Bill —the
Sale and Supply of Alcohol (Cellar Door
Tasting) Amendment Bill.
The bill seeks to address anomalies in
the law that make it difficult and
expensive for cellar doorstocharge for
the samples of their wine to their
visitors.
Reflecting current industrypractice, a
sample will be defined under the Act
the Act by adding acategory of offlicencegeneral
Definitions of ‘‘winery’’and ‘‘winery
use of those terms, are in the bill.
The objectivesofthe current Act are
that the sale, supply, and consumption of
alcohol should be undertaken safely and
responsibly andthat the harm caused by
the excessive or inappropriate
consumption of alcohol should be
minimised.
This bill will further advance those
objectives.
The bill passed its ‘First Reading’ with
105 votes out of 120, which is
unprecedentedfor a‘Conscience Vote’.
Alcohol legislation is usually treated
as aconscience matter and left to
individual MPs to decide.
The JusticeSelect Committeewill
hear submissions and report to the
House early in the New Year, where it
will progress (or not) through the
remaining stages.
change, and change is coming.
Regionalcouncils lobby for resilient rivers against storms
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Adapting to climate change and
providing sustainable transport are
priorities for Environment
Canterbury's long term plan, ameeting
has heard.
Environment Canterbury (ECan)
chairperson Peter Scottand
councillor Tutehounuku Korako
spoke about the issues at aKaikōura
District Council workshop on
Wednesday.
ECan has joined with other regional
councils lobbying central Government
to help to make rivers more resilient
against major storms.
The councils have called for a$2.5
billion funding package over 10 years,
Cr Scott said.
‘‘We did some work with (outgoing
Finance Minister) Grant Robertson
and areport was produced —Before
The Deluge —which presented agood
business case, but Cyclone Gabrielle
happened and all the resources went
into the recovery.’’
Cr Scott said the incoming
government had indicated funding
infrastructure was apriority and he
hoped this could be extended to
include river work.
‘‘It is not something Iwould like to
see pushed back when there is anew
Government,’’ Kaikōura Mayor Craig
Mackle said.
Kaikōura councillor Tony Blunt said
maintenance on rivers was amajor
issue forthe district.
‘‘The problem for us is alot more
immediate because the mountains are
right there and we have the
earthquake debris waiting to come
down.’’
Meanwhile, the demand for public
transport has increased as petrol
prices rise, Cr Scott said. He predicted
abus shortage in the region over the
next six months as the council could
not obtain new buses fast enough to
meet demand.
Cr Korako, aNgāiTahu councillor,
said the priority forthe region’s 10
Papatipu Rūnanga was the protection
of freshwater, indigenous biodiversity
and climate mitigation.
‘‘From the conversations Ihave had,
Ithink the Rūnanga are going to work
closer with councils which ... is
important.’’
Mr Mackle said the mayorsand chief
executives of the Marlborough,
Kaikōuraand Hurunui District
councils met with Te Rūnanga o
KaikōuraatTakahanga Marae last
Friday.
‘‘There was no agenda and Ithink
that was important.’’
Cr Scott said he wanted to bring a
contingent of ECan staff and
councillors to Kaikōurafor two days,
next year,tobecome morefamiliar
with issues facing the district.
Climate change costly
ByDAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Helping Waimakariri businesses
be more resilient in the face of
climate change is akey goal in
the councils's 10year strategy.
The Waimakariri districthas
faced ‘‘unprecedented’’ costs
from major storms and flooding,
Waimakariri District Council
strategy, engagement and
economic development general
manager Simon Hart says.
Weather events over the last
three years have cost the council
$10 million in unplanned
expenditure, he said.
Local businesses had been hit
by Covid19, the Canterbury
earthquakes, drought, flooding,
storms and the rising cost of
living over the last 13 years, he
said.
‘‘All of these events impact on
people’s livelihoods,’’ Mr Hart
said.
‘‘We need to be able to adapt as
we can see more adverse events
happening in the future, so it is
about how we can help
businesses to be more
sustainable.’’
The Waimakariri District
Council adopted the
Waimakariri Economic
Development Strategy 2024/34
earlier this month.
The strategy replaced the
council’s Local Development
Strategy, which was adopted in
2012 in the wake of the 2010 and
2011 earthquakes.
‘‘This strategy does feel like a
steep shift from 2012, as abig
chunk of that strategy was capital
Sustainable future ... Resilience is
the focus of the new Waimakariri
Economic Development Plan.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED BY WAIMAKARIRI DISTRICT COUNCIL
projects and areal focus was on
recovery,’’ Mr Hart said.
‘‘Now the focus is on climate
change and supporting business
to adapt and be resilient,
particularly agriculture,’’
business and centres senior
advisor Vanessa Thompson
added.
She said there was move
towards ‘‘a circular economy’’,
whichhad agreater emphasis on
reusing and repairing goods,
rather than sendingthem to
landfill.
Agricultureremained
important to the local economy,
along with manufacturing and
the demanddriven economy,
such as retail and construction
‘‘anything whichservices a
household’’, Mr Hart said.
Waimakariri as avisitor
attraction was the subject of a
separatevisitor strategy
developedwith Enterprise North
Canterbury, the council’s
economic development arm, and
incorporatedinto the
ChristchurchNZ Destination
Management Plan.
‘‘Tourism is not one of the big
income earners for us, as our
visitors are mainly from
Christchurch, visitingfamily and
friends,’’ Mr Hart said.
‘‘But when we develop
infrastructure like Mainpower
Stadium, which are regionally
and nationally significant, then
we tend to attract more visitors.’’
He said the Waimakariri
Economic Development Strategy
would be incorporatedinto the
2024/34 Long Term Plan, but no
fundingwould be sought next
year.
The strategy identified 53
action points,with some of those
already underwayand others
could be actioned within existing
budgets.
Options included working with
businesses to investigate
renewable energy, support the
primary sector in tackling
climate change,support
initiatives such as a‘‘repair cafe’’
and supporting astro tourism at
Dumped ... Apile of rubbish dumped in Fernside.
PHOTO: SHELLEY TOPP
Focus on fly tippers
By SHELLEY TOPP
The Fernside community is
being urged to report any
suspicious activity to
Environment Canterbury after
rubbish was dumped alongside
the Cust River.
It was dumped close to the
Bridge Road, O’Roarkes Road
pedestrian bridge recently.
ECan’s flood protection
recovery manager Shaun
McCracken says illegal
dumping of green waste and
inorganic items is rife across
the region, putting flood
protection, biodiversity, and
water health at risk.
‘‘Not only can these items be
ahealth and safety issue for
membersofthe public, animals
and those having to remove the
rubbish, having these items
removed appropriately also
comes with acost to
ratepayers.’’
Dumping rubbish is an
offence under the Resource
Management Act and carries
with it an immediate $750
infringement, along with any
costs associated with removal
of the rubbish.
In many instances, materials
that are dumped could have
been disposed of for free at
waste stations, which also offer
cheaper disposal rates for
green waste than general
rubbish.
‘‘If you see suspicious activity
or rubbish being dumped in a
riverbed, please note the
details of the vehicle and
location, and report it to our
Incident Reporting Line on
0800 765 588 or by using the
Snap Send Solve app (for Apple
or Android) or online reporting
tool,’’ Shaun says
‘‘It is really disappointing
when rubbish is dumped in our
riverbeds. The ratepayer
should not have to bear the cost
of this illegal activity.”
Memorial service at crashsite
ByJOHN COSGROVE
The niece of aNew Zealand airman killed
80 years ago says visiting the crash site
was an experience she will always
cherish.
Heather Brown of Loburn, and six of
her cousins travelled to Germany to
attend amemorial service organised by
German crash site researcher Erik
Wieman, who found the wrecksite in
2017.
Heather’s uncle, Invercargillborn
Flight Sergeant Alexander Holms, died
aged 34, after his Stirling bomber was shot
down during an air raid over Germany,
early on the morning of September 6,
1943.
‘‘My father Bill Holms was Uncle Alex’s
brother. They grew up in Waimahaka.’’
Heather only found out about her uncle
when Erik sent the story about the crash
site to New Zealand newspapers seeking
any relatives in 2019.
‘‘It took afew years to get there thanks
to Covid, but Iwas so very proud to be
there and join in the service.’’
This took place in the German city of
Ludwigshafen am Rhein, south of
Frankfurt, and included representatives
from the United Kingdom Royal Air
Force and the New Zealand defence
attache, as well as families of the other
New Zealand and British servicemen
killed.
‘‘While it was avery emotional
occasion, the wonderful people there
kept the mood light as they celebrated the
lives of the stricken bomber crew who had
crashed there 80 years ago.’’
Flight Sergeant Holms, aged 34, was a
Royal New Zealand Air Forcenavigator
serving aboard the Stirling heavy bomber
of 149 Squadron, RAF.
He was one of three Kiwis aboard that
fateful flight.
The bomber was part of a605 bomber
on the evening of September 5, 1943, to
attack the industrial cities of
Ludwigshafen and Mannheim, a800 mile
round trip.
After dropping their bombs and turning
for home, they were shot down.
Only one member of the sevenman
English and Kiwi crew survived the crash
the tail gunner. The bomber‘s remains
still rest in afarmer’s field near the city of
Ludwigshafen.
F/S Holms's body was recovered by
German forces and buried at Dernbach,
160 Km further south.
There were 34 aircraft shot down and
174 airmen killed that night, and until
recently the exact location of the crash
site of the Stirling bomber was unknown.
Mr Wieman was led to the site in 2017 by
aman who had witnessed the crash as a
young lad. Ms Brown says there is anice
plaque on the site now and following the
service they were all treated to soup and
bread supplied from aGerman Army field
kitchen.
Christmas cheer solutions sought
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Solutions are needed to bring Christmas
cheer to struggling families, says
Waimakariri Deputy Mayor Neville
Atkinson.
Cr Atkinson said he was shocked to
hear of record demand at Kaiapoi’s food
bank.
Community Wellbeing North
Canterbury Trust’s Kaiapoi food bank
gave out arecord 222 parcels in
September and volunteers were bracing
for another big Christmas rush.
‘‘Those numbers are astronomical,’’
Cr Atkinson said.
‘‘I absolutely support what they are
doing and know they are under massive
pressure.
‘‘We need to make sure pressure is put
on Government and other agencies to
make sure people have adequate
resources to look after themselves.’’
Community Wellbeing North
Canterbury Trust marketing manager
Louise Leitch said demand had
increased dramatically in the last two
years.
‘‘Two years ago we gave out an average
of 35 parcels amonth, but in September
we gave out 222, which is the highest
number outside of the Christmas
period.’’
The trust has been running an appeal
in recent weeks to raise some urgently
needed funds to support the food bank.
She said many of families seeking help
had two parents working, but faced high
rents, alack of affordable housing,
rising petrol prices and the cost of
groceries.
‘‘A lot of people are coming to us who
have never needed support before, but
they can’t feed their kids because of the
cost of living.’’
The trust is also gearing up for the
annual Toot for Tucker food drive on
Tuesday, December 5, with all of the
Kaiapoi donations going to the Kaiapoi
Community Support food bank.
The last two years have seen record
food hauls from Toot for Tucker, but the
demand in the lead up to Christmas last
year, meant the food bank was seeking
donations again amonth later.
The trust will also have Christmas
giving trees set up in the lead up to
Christmas, where people can drop off
gifts for families in need.
Trees will be available at the Kaiapoi
Library, Kaiapoi New World, Pak’nSave
Rangiora, and Ray White in Kaiapoi,
Rangiora and Pegasus, with the gifts
collected by volunteers.
‘‘We welcome gifts for children, teens,
and mums and dads,’’ Ms Leitch said.
‘‘We often find we don’t get enough for
the teens.’’
She recommended toiletries,
chocolates and gift vouchers were
suitable for teenagers.
Gifts can be dropped off by December
17, so they can be delivered in time and
should be new and unwrapped.
Donations of gift wrapping paper were
also welcome, so parents at least had the
pleasure of wrapping their children’s
presents.
Shearing time ... Phil Oldfield demonstrates shearing at the Oxford Big Family Fun Day
Oxford’sBig Day Out
By JOHN COSGROVE
Agreat crowd, coupled with fine
weather, saw ahuge turnout at the
Oxford and Districts Lions Club’s Big
Family Fun Day Out.
Club president Phil Bay says he’s
very happy how the third annual
family fun day turned out on Sunday.
‘‘So many people turned up to help
us run the event.
‘‘We needed 60 people to make it
work and were surprised by the large
numbers which turned up.’’
He cites support from the Oxford and
district community, the Oxford Area
School, Young Farmers Club, Air
Training Corps from Rangiora, and
members of the Woodend and Pegasus
and the Rangiora Lions Clubs who all
helped make the show the best it has
been.
‘‘I started the event three years ago
and it’s grown every year with this one
being the biggest so far.’’
Mr Bay says the Lions run it as an
affordable fun day out.
‘‘It’s something kids can get a
memorable experience from.
‘‘It’s now one of those events which
everyone puts on their calendar to
attend each year.’’
Therewere many attractions at the
Oxford Showgrounds.
New Zealand’s longest bouncy castle
was there, along with an animal
farmyard full of pets all seeking
attention from visitors, horse and cart
rides, classic cars on display and over
30 stalls offering food and items.
‘‘I have to thank the community for
supporting us so well, the Bristows for
arranging the blade shearing displays,
the local firebrigade for
demonstrating their skills by cutting a
car open and the spinning club for
demonstrating their craft all day in the
sun,’’ says Phil.
The new dog agility display attracted
plenty of attention and Phil says stalls
were busy throughout the day.
‘‘I went for awalk around lunchtime
and was amazed at how popular all the
stands were.
‘‘Kids were queuing up to do
everything right down to banging nails
into timber, it was so good to see them
all having so much fun.’’
All the funds raised at the Oxford Big
Family Fun Day Out, will be used by
the Lions to support community
assistance projects in the district.
The majority of the building work
was funded by the WaikariReserve
there is alot of history at the grounds,
once the home of the United Rugby
been the home of Waikari School’s
sports day.
‘‘Now it’s fabulous to breathe new
life into this revamped space, and
invite visitors and locals to all enjoy
the camping facilities.’’
Student art display
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
The talents of Kaikōura youth have been
on display at the Mayfair Arts and Culture
Centre.
An art exhibition, Ākonga Expressions,
brought together artworks by students
enrolled full time through Te Aho o Te
Kura Pounamu (Correspondence school)
and attending Te Hā o Mātauranga for
their schooling.
The exhibition was made possible with
funding from the Ministry of Youth
Development and Creative Communities
Kaikōura, with Kaikōura artist Geoff
Noble offering some lessons.
Te Hā o Mātauranga education coordinator
Sarah Beardmoresaid the
inspiration for the exhibition came from
the artwork produced by young artist
Kyson Manawatu,‘‘who is continually
drawing and creating’’.
Kyson had 10 of his artworks in the
exhibit, while fellow student Kara Smith
took on the job of creating the advertising,
the invitations and organising the
exhibition opening.
‘‘It is great to see our young people with
the skills to make events like this happen,’’
Mrs Beardmoresaid.
‘‘All the young contributors have done an
amazing job and staff at Te Hā o
Mātauranga are very proud of them.’’
She said the exhibition opening saw six
artworks sold, including one named
‘‘Stronger Together’’ being purchased for
the Mayfair collection.
While Te Hā o Mātauranga is not a
registered alternative education provider,
it has been supporting students who
struggled to attend school full time, thanks
to funding from the Ministry of Youth
Development.
Last week the students joined with
young job seekers through Kaikōura’s
Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs programme to
learn the finer arts of coffee.
The course was run by Blenheimbased
coffee educator Brooke McLeod.
‘‘I was one of these kids once,’’ Ms
McLeod said. ‘‘I didn’t last at school. Ijust
couldn’t concentrate.’’
Ms McLeod attended acommunity
college and worked at McDonald’s, before
moving to Brisbane where she developed a
passion for coffee.
She returned to New Zealand to raise
her family and later developed home
barista training courses.
‘‘During Covid everybody went out and
bought coffee machines, so since 2020 I’ve
been teaching people in their homes to
make good coffees.’’
An end of year celebration for Te Hā o
Mātauranga students will be held on
Monday, December 4.
Museum calendar
Rangiora Borough School, which
celebrates its 150th jubilee this year,
features in Rangiora Museum’s 2024
calendar.
The photos werechosen by museum
volunteer Ann Jelfs, aformer pupil.
The front cover is an aerial
photograph of the school taken
around 1950, while the September
photo is of the school’s original
buildings.
MrsJelfs believes the September
photo would have been copied froma
slide, as the buildings were
demolished in the 1960s.
MrsJelfs favourite photo is one of
the Elms Nursing Home in King
Street in 1915 of Mrs Milbury Tombs
and five babies, whichisincluded for
October.
‘‘Before then, there were two or
three maternity hospitals in
Rangiora,’’ she says.
June page features an image of
High Street under heavysnow in 1945.
The calendar has been sponsored
by Artisan Bakery and Wilson Print.
For May, Mrs Jelfs chose a1931 photo
of the Whitehouse Bakery, a
forerunner of Artisan Bakery. The
Calendars are now on sale from the
museum in Good Street and from
Rangiora Barbers for $15 each, with
the proceeds going to the museum.
Openstudio event
The spirit of Christmas was the inspiration
for Oxford, artist Grant Philip, who paints
by holding abrush in his mouth.
The painting entitled Christmas Wreath
is featured on agift card and wrapping
paper which is included among the
Christmas products being sold throughout
Australia and New Zealand by the Mouth
and Foot Paintings Artists (MFPA), an
international art group, which has 850
members in 84 countries throughout the
world.
‘‘The Christmas wreath epitomises the
celebration of Christmas. Christmas is a
time of the year that Ienjoy with my wife
and family, Grant says.
‘‘Many people hang these on the front
door during Christmas, and Ithought
having it as acard, gift tag or wrapping
paper would be agood idea.’’
The selection of the pictures for the
products for the Christmas range is made
by apanel of European experts.
This year’s range includes paintings by
six New Zealand artists.
Grant has been confined to awheelchair
since he had adiving accident in the
summer of 1989 which left him as a
tetraplegic.
Before his accident, Grant was an
apprentice Sheet Metal Engineer as well
as aTerritorial Soldier with the Royal
New Zealand Corps of Engineers, 1st Field
Squadron.
After the accident, he retrained as a
computeraided designer and held fulltime
employment for eight years designing
playgrounds for McDonald’s Restaurants.
Twentytwo years ago, he was
introduced to mouth painting by MFPA
member Grant Sharman, and after
submitting aseries of paintings was
awarded aStudent Scholarship with
MFPA.
Grant is also akeen sportsman and
competed in Archery in the 2018 Invictus
Games in Sydney.
He’s also competed in the paralympic
sport of target shooting representing New
Zealand at two World Championships,
numerous World Cups, and various
International competitions, as well as
regional and national championships.
The Mouth and Foot Painting Artists
gain their income through the sale of
products illustrated with their paintings,
and although this started with Christmas
cards, today it includes awide list of
products ranging from special occasion
cards, jigsaws, tea sets, address books,
calendars, Christmas serviettes and
placemats, gift tags and wrapping paper.
Founded in 1956 by agroup of European
artists, the MFPA is aselfhelp
organisation that gives people with
disabilities the opportunity to fulfill their
creative ambitions while still maintaining
financial independence by selectively
selling their artworks.
The MFPA was established in New
Zealand in 1961 and has 25 members.To
become astudent member, an artist must
qualify by painting using abrush held in
either their mouth or foot, having lost the
use of their hands through an illness or
accident. Student members receive
scholarships for art supplies and tuition.
Kaikōura zone delivery lead Marco
Cataloni says īnanga (whitebait), are ‘‘poor
climbers’’,
‘‘A fish ladder will allow them and
torrentfish to swim into an upper
catchment.
‘‘There is huge value to the catchment in
creating this passage as it will provide
more adult habitat for fish, some of which
are at risk or threatened.’’
Arecent survey of Middle Creek found
healthy populations of native fish species
in the lower reaches of the stream, Mr
Cataloni says.
He said reestablishing fish passage
would allow species such as redfin bully,
bluegill bully, torrentfish, īnanga, kōaro
(whitebait) and shortfin and longfin tuna
(eels) to thrive.
The survey also found kanakana
(pouched lamprey) in Middle Creek.
‘‘There have been numerous sightings of
kanakana in recent years, with one even
being caught in awhitebait net (and
released) by locals.
‘‘We will continue working with our
rivers and surface water science teams to
determine what species are present and
where,’’ Mr Cataloni says.
He says the council is keen to confirm
giant kōkopu (whitebait), are alive in the
creek.
RURAL LIFE
The North Canterbury News, November 23, 2023
Strong NC representation at NZ show
27
By SHELLEY TOPP
North Canterbury had astrong
representation at this year’s New
Zealand Agricultural Show, in
Christchurch, led by Sefton’s Anne
Rogers.
She made history at the show by
becoming only the second woman in 160
years to be president of the Canterbury
A&P Association which runs the historic
event.
Two of her show team members, event
manager Karl Howarth, and Christine
Beaton, are also from North Canterbury.
The popular Kiwi Christmas Cake
competition, which was organised by
Christine, was won by Julie Tapp from
Swannanoa.
In the Wool Zone, Pieta BuistSidey, a
14yearold, sixth generation corriedale
sheep farmer from Hawarden, also
represented North Canterbury in style
with her corriedale ewe and twin lambs,
which won first prize in the Aged
Corriedale Ewe and Lambs category and
Reserve Champion in the Corriedale
Ewe category.
Pieta was presented with the H.C.A.
Sidey Memorial Trophy for her win and
receiving it was incredibly special
because it is her great grandfather's
Memorial Trophy, donated by the Sidey
family in 1961 after Harry Sidey’s death.
Pieta’s family have along tradition
with the corriedale breed.
‘‘My great great great grandfather
James Little bred the first ever
corriedale in 1878. James’s daughter
married aSidey and together they and
each generation thereafter have
continued his legacy with immense
pride,’’ Pieta said.
North Canterbury was also strongly
represented by many other section
competitors and stallholders.
Overall, crowd and competitor
numbers were similar to last year’s
show, but trade exhibitor numbers were
down slightly.
The weather for the threeday show,
which began on Wednesday last week
and ended with the big day out on
Canterbury Anniversary Day, was
mostly good but turned cold later in the
morning on Friday with rain coming on
just after the Grand Parade finished.
New innovations, the Wool Zone and
the Christmas Cake competition had
proved extremely popular, Anne said.
‘‘I would like to think both of these
events will be running again next year.’’
Anne said she was grateful for the
village of volunteers who worked
tirelessly to man another NZ
Agricultural Show, and also ``humbled
by the support Ihave had from the
sections and general committee of the
Canterbury A&P Association’’.
Overseas trip will help Harry’sambitions
By JOHN COSGROVE
Lessons learnt from racing in Malaysia
will play abig part in Harry Shank’s
future motorcycle racing ambitions.
Harry, aged 16, of Kaiapoi, has just
returned from the Sepang International
Circuit, near Kuala Lumper in Malaysia.
His overseas trip was in pursuit of
becoming one of the 10 new faces to join
the 2024 Asia Talent Cup (ATC) grid next
year and race in five international
motorcycle race meetings.
Sadly Harry got tangled up with a
group of six riders who he couldn’t
shake, and his time was not quite good
enough to see him make the top 30 runoff.
‘‘It was avery short and physical track
and the heat didn’t help either.
‘‘I had never ridden that type of
dedicated race bike before and it was
obvious many of the others had been
racing on that particular bike many
times before.’’
Harry’s best time was 1.5 seconds off
the fastest rider.
‘‘It was abit disappointing but Ihave
The series is for riders between 14 and
17 years of age.
Competitors race at the same FIM
MotoGP World Championship rounds
held in Asia, with one round alongside
the Malaysian Superbike championship.
Each ATC round comprises two races,
and riders compete on identical, ATCliveried
Honda NSF250R Moto3
machines.
The action began for Harry at 8am and
finished midafternoon, with ateam of
experts on hand to assess the riders.
These were led by the team manager
for the MotoGP Repsol Honda team
Alberto Puig alongside 2009 GP 250cc
Champion Hiroshi Aoyama.
Riders rode two qualifying sessions,
all hoping for the fastest time to take
them into the third and final ATC
qualifying round.
Harry was later ‘‘blown away’’ by the
speed of the MotoGP racers in action
later in the week.
‘‘They are all so fast and so exact, it
was great to see them in action.’’
While there, Harry talked with many
riders and found he needs to change or
adapt his training practices to provide
him with the skills he needs to succeed
on the track in the future.
‘‘They had lots of good advice for me
on what training Ineed to be doing to go
faster.’’
Already the experience has helped
him with astrong second place recorded
at Teretonga the weekend following his
return.
He is now preparing for the first round
of the National Point Series in Taupo in
afew weeks, racing with the Helicraft
Cycle safety campaign needed to
keep cyclists safe on the road
By SHELLEY TOPP
Rangiora’s Dave Wilmott wants a
cycling safety campaign after a
friend was knocked off his ebike
in ahitandrun accident in the
town.
The accident happened at
Rangiora's Kingsbury Avenue
roundabout, where King Street
changes to Enverton Drive, on the
afternoon of October 16.
Dave’s friend Alan Blackie was
badly shaken by the accident and
his ebike was damaged, but he
was not injured.
It is the latest in along line of
near misses the men say they
have encountered as road
cyclists.
Dave also had aclose call at the
same roundabout last year and he
says there has been numerous
encounters with drivers going out
of their way to abuse them as
cyclists, even to the point of
getting out of their car to
challenge them.
‘‘On one occasion adriver
followed us and made apoint of
stoppingand abusing us at three
different intersections.’’
They would like to see a
campaign to raise awareness
about cycling safety, asking
motorists to take more care
around cyclists and other road
users.
‘‘The lack of attention is
horrifying to thinkabout when
you are on the road with no
protection surrounding you,’’
Dave says.
‘‘All road users have aright to
be there.’’
Waimakariri District Council
journey planner/road safety coordinator
Peter Daly says
roundabouts are especially
dangerous places for cyclists and
motorcyclists.
‘‘Car drivers tend to see cars
and trucks, that sort of thing, but
fail to see smaller road users, as
their mindisjust not expecting
them.
‘‘There are so few cyclists that
people are subconsciously just
not looking for them.’’
This was compounded by
saccadic masking which occurs
when the brain blocks visual
processing.
Drivers can counter that by
adoptinga‘‘Look Twice For
Bikes’’ habit, Peter says.
‘‘Your mindisfar more likely to
register something if you actually
look for it, more than once.
‘‘If everyone gave it just abit
more thought, people would be
less likely to drive into the path of
acyclist they are required to give
way to.’’
Cyclists can also help by doing
things to make themselves more
visible.
‘‘It is in every cyclists best
interest to be aware of the risks
they have to manage when riding
in traffic.
‘‘Generally, if people see you,
they are less likely to hit you. So
making yourself more visible is
the key.’’
Lights and wearinghiviz
clothing along with making sure
they are visible all help.
‘‘This is called ‘positioning’. It
is where we put ourselves
relative to other traffic.
‘‘Not putting ourselves where
people can’t see us is the key,’’
Peter says.
‘‘Cyclists are legitimate road
users. The problem is not cyclists,
car drivers, or any other road
user. The problem is intolerance
and alack of empathy for other
road users.’’
CAB raffle fundraiser
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Funding Citizens Advice
Bureau North Canterbury is a
challenge.
This is despite support from
the Waimakariri District
Council, the Rata Foundation
COGS.
The CAB, which does not
receive any direct funding from
central government, is staffed
by volunteers and offers anonjudgmental
service to anyone
who needs help with aquestion
or issue.
This is despite many
government websites
encouraging clients to contact
CAB for help and information.
To assist with fundraising,
CAB North Canterbury has run
several fund raising events,
finishing off the year with a
bumper Christmas raffle.
First prize is adonated signed
Crusaders jersey (framers
Ronald Mottram Picture
Framing), ajet boat ride
donated by Energy Jet NZ, and
several other prizes.
CAB North Canterbury says its
fundraising efforts will help
ensure clients get the service
and reassurance from someone
who takes the time to listen, to
understand and to discuss well
researched and considered
options.
‘‘It is invaluable and
contributes to strengthening
communities,’’ aspokesperson
says.
CAB North Canterbury also
provides free clinics to help
clients with legal, budgeting,
employment and immigration
issues, offers aJustice of the
Peace service, helps with CVs
and cover letters, assists those
who are challenged or excluded
by the digital world, and coordinates
atransport service for
medical appointments in
Christchurch for those over 65.
Raffle tickets are available
from the CAB office at 209 High
Street, Rangiora, and outside
some supermarkets until
December 7.
Eddie Low in Rangiora
On Thursday, November 9, singer
Eddie Low kicked off afourshow
tour as part of the NZ
Highwaymen tour, despite
having his entire stomach
removed alittle over amonth
ago.
The 80yearold underwent a
sixhour surgery on September
29, to remove his stomach due to
diffuse gastric cancer, asurgery
that has since led to considerable
weight loss, as was expected with
this operation.
Eddie will perform at the
Christmas Country Concert at the
Rangiora RSA on December 3,
from 2pm to 4pm, along with
Brendan Dugan and Sisters in
Country —Jodi Vaughan and Aly
Cook.
Eddie’s diagnosis came about
after extensive testing in
Christchurch following his
collapse backstage at the
Hokitika show during the final
nights of the first leg the NZ
Highwaymen tour in July.
That incident prevented him
from performing at the last two
shows, but was the catalyst for the
testing which eventually led to
diagnosis of diffuse stomach
cancer.
Tour promoter and promoter
Aly Cook says that preempting
concerns about his health and
appearance, Eddie has chosen to
be open with his fans.
‘It hasn’t been an easy decision
for him or his family to share
such immensely private and
personal news, but Eddie is
keenly aware that fans are
noticing asignificant weight loss
even sincethe first leg of the NZ
Highwaymen tour ended in July.’’
Aly says she and the rest of the
NZ Highwaymen were blown
away with Eddie’s performance
on the tour.
‘‘The man’s just had his
stomach removed, for goodness
sake. He’s an absolute champion.
‘‘He’s still hoarse when he talks
as aresult of the bruising and
damage to his throat and
oesophagus from the intubation
during and after surgery, but
Eddie sings in his diaphragm, not
his throat, so there isn’t really
much difference when he sings.”
The surgery was originally set
for early September, which
would have allowed more time
for recovery before the planned
shows but was delayed due to the
senior doctors’ strikes. However,
Eddie Low
Eddie says even the later date
wouldn’t have stopped him.
‘‘People want to see us and that’s
aprivilege Iwould never take for
granted. Idon’t want to let them
down.’’
Civil Defence Teams Successfully Navigate
Annual Emergency Response Exercise
In the latest annual emergency response
exercise hosted by the Waimakariri District
Council, volunteer Civil Defence Emergency
Management teams collaborated totackle a
simulated emergency scenario.
This year's challenge simulated arare 1in200-year
Ashley River flood. The NZRT 12response team,
alongside the Welfare Support and Operational
Support sections of the Emergency Support
team, effectively operated aCivil Defence Centre,
supported aCommunity Emergency Hub, and
orchestrated the response from amobile Incident
Control Point.
With the participation of nearly 40 Civil Defence
Emergency Management volunteers and assistance
from dedicated Volunteer Victims role players,
complemented by Waimakariri District Council
Civil Defence staff, the exercise proved tobea
resounding success. Council officials expressed
satisfaction with the demonstrated skills and
professionalism of all participating volunteers.
The event also provided avaluable opportunity to
practice using the mobile generator and portable
Star Link satellite internet system. Insights
gained from the exercise will beincorporated into
future training sessions, contributing to ongoing
improvement in emergency response capabilities.
Speed Management Plan Including Schools
Lower speed limits around schools and at key
intersections is afocus of Waimakariri’s draft
Speed Management Plan 2023/27.
Waimakariri District Council’s plan, now out for
public feedback, is in response toWaka Kotahi
NZ Transport Agency’s Road toZero, the national
road safety strategy aimed at reducing deaths and
serious injuries from crashes.
Waimakariri’s Speed Management Plan has two
major proposals:
• A focus on safer speeds around schools. This
includes amix of permanent variable (active
during drop-off and pick-up times) and
permanent signs that show a30km/h limit
around all schools
• Lower speed limits for key Intersections and a
small number of roads.
You still have time to let us know what you
think with the consultation open until Monday
27 November.
You docan do this:
• Online at waimakariri.govt.nz/letstalk
You can provide feedback with our survey
and check out the proposed changes on the
online map
• Hard copy. There are feedback forms in all
Council service centres and libraries.
KAIAPOI CHRISTADELPHIANS
“The Key ofknowledge (Luke 11:52)
These are uncertain and challenging times, the
Bible has predicted such atime, “Men’s hearts
failing them for fear, and for looking after those
things which are coming upon the earth…” Luke
21:26, yet it’s message has not left us hopeless.
GOD has promised atime ofpeace beyond the
storm, when HIS Son shall return, for He is the
Prince of Peace. “And He shall judge among
the nations and rebuke many people, and they
shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their
spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up
sword against nation, neither shall they learn war
any more”. Isaiah 2:4.
