Bridge to be built, road raised

our colleagues in Three Waters
to come up with a permanent
solution to the issue. Raising
the road will help solve flooding
issues, as well as enable us
to renew the surface along that
stretch of road,” Guy said.
New Brighton Rd is currently
down to one lane with traffic
lights managing the two-way
flow.
“During stage one we will be
working on both sides of the
road, and this will be completed
either by using traffic lights,
or manual traffic control, as
this allows traffic to still flow
through the site and reduces the
impact on the public,” Guy said.

getting through the site, most
of which have been caused by

council to make a 10 per cent
cut to its programme after its
funding pool was reduced by

the road will be open to all
traffic.
After Christmas, stage two
will begin and will include the
building of the bridge and the
raising of the road.
“The only way we can do
this is by closing the road with
detours in place. In order to
ensure the least impact on the
surrounding area, council has
restricted the amount of other
works that can be completed on
any of the detour routes.
“We know this has been a
long-standing issue, so it’s been
great to get a permanent solution
being delivered. We would like
to thank everyone for their
patience to this point, and bear
with us whilst we do our best to
get the work completed as fast as
possible,” Guy said.
It is now awaiting direction
from the incoming Government,
so no further funding
agreements will go ahead with
councils until this is in place.
If the city council’s projects
do not receive Transport
Choices funding, their delivery
will be considered as a part
of ongoing Long Term Plan
discussions.

arterial set
for upgrade
THE KEY route in and out of
South Brighton is set for an
upgrade.
Plans have been released for
safety improvements to the Bridge
St and Estuary Rd roundabout
after the community reported
feeling unsafe due to high vehicle
speeds through the area and poor
visibility.
Improvements include speed
humps at all entrances to the
roundabout, no stopping lines to
improve visibility on the south
and west sides of Bridge St, and
pedestrian warning signs on the
Bridge St approaches.
“This is the main route to and
from South Brighton with a
high number of drivers, cyclists
and pedestrians using nearby
businesses, schools, preschools
and the Common Ground so we
need to ensure that it’s safe for
everyone who uses it,” said city
council transport operations
manager Stephen Wright.
