see the volunteering efforts of some
of the many district’s volunteers
recognised next week as aspecial
‘Big Shout Out’ to markthe
Coronation of King Charles III.
At the time of the King’s coronation
in May Kiwis wereencouraged to
‘shout out’ their local volunteers,
either in person or via social media.

Radhakrishnan said events around
New Zealand reflected the
Coronation themes of commitment to
sustainability, the environment, and
to the efforts of volunteers.

King’s coronation including three
community plantings.
After the coronation 17 volunteer
centre’s werecontacted and invited
to hold an event called the Big Shout
Out as acelebration and thank you to
volunteers.
“We all know people who
generously give their time, energy
and expertise to causes they believe
in. The Big Shout Out will be about
recognisingand thanking those
volunteers doing what may
sometimes seem like thankless
tasks,’’ Radhakrishman said, at the
time.
“The reality is that they’re
the backbone of our society ...
90 per cent of our community
organisations are entirely
volunteer run.
“We know that around 50
per cent of Kiwis volunteer
in some way, shape or form.
Their efforts can range from
being first responders in
emergencies, working to
conserve the environment, or

who are struggling.
“The Big Shout Out is an excellent
opportunity to show how much we
value our volunteers.
Next week Volunteering Mid &
South Canterbury haveinvited
members to amorning tea and
crafting event.
Recent data released by
Volunteering New Zealand showed
9.4% of people in Canterbury
volunteer whichisthe highest
percentage in the South Island.
While more South Islanders
volunteer than North Islanders, the
North Islanders volunteer more
hours.
More rural 58.6% people volunteer
than those in major urban areas.
From afour­week period of data
studied 15.9 %ofpeople volunteered
formally through organisations and
11.8% through informal like helping a
neighbour.
Rurally 12.8% were involved in
formal volunteer and 23.7% in small
urban areas. Rural volunteers tend to
stay longer in formal volunteering
roles often due to fewer options being
available in outlying regions.
