International Volunteering Day will<br />
see the volunteering efforts of some<br />
of the many district’s volunteers<br />
recognised next week as aspecial<br />
‘Big Shout Out’ to markthe<br />
Coronation of King Charles III.<br />
At the time of the King’s coronation<br />
in May Kiwis wereencouraged to<br />
‘shout out’ their local volunteers,<br />
either in person or via social media.<br />

New Zealand reflected the<br />
Coronation themes of commitment to<br />
sustainability, the environment, and<br />
to the efforts of volunteers.<br />

After the coronation 17 volunteer<br />
centre’s werecontacted and invited<br />
to hold an event called the Big Shout<br />
Out as acelebration and thank you to<br />
volunteers.<br />
“We all know people who<br />
generously give their time, energy<br />
and expertise to causes they believe<br />
in. The Big Shout Out will be about<br />
recognisingand thanking those<br />
volunteers doing what may<br />
sometimes seem like thankless<br />
tasks,’’ Radhakrishman said, at the<br />
time.<br />
“The reality is that they’re<br />
the backbone of our society ...<br />
90 per cent of our community<br />
organisations are entirely<br />
volunteer run.<br />
“We know that around 50<br />
per cent of Kiwis volunteer<br />
in some way, shape or form.<br />
Their efforts can range from<br />
being first responders in<br />
emergencies, working to<br />
conserve the environment, or<br />

who are struggling.<br />
“The Big Shout Out is an excellent<br />
opportunity to show how much we<br />
value our volunteers.<br />
Next week Volunteering Mid &<br />
South Canterbury haveinvited<br />
members to amorning tea and<br />
crafting event.<br />
Recent data released by<br />
Volunteering New Zealand showed<br />
9.4% of people in Canterbury<br />
volunteer whichisthe highest<br />
percentage in the South Island.<br />
While more South Islanders<br />
volunteer than North Islanders, the<br />
North Islanders volunteer more<br />
hours.<br />
More rural 58.6% people volunteer<br />
than those in major urban areas.<br />
From afourweek period of data<br />
studied 15.9 %ofpeople volunteered<br />
formally through organisations and<br />
11.8% through informal like helping a<br />
neighbour.<br />
Rurally 12.8% were involved in<br />
formal volunteer and 23.7% in small<br />
urban areas. Rural volunteers tend to<br />
stay longer in formal volunteering<br />
roles often due to fewer options being<br />
available in outlying regions.<br />
