Fishers urged to clean up
as hooks injure dogs

DOG WALKERS are
demanding fishers do more to
clean up fish hooks and lines
in Redcliffs after a series of
injuries.

discarded fish hooks
along Beachville Rd.
On November 27, a
fish hook got caught
in the miniature
schnauzer’s leg when
she was exploring the
seawall rocks along
the Coastal Pathway.
The seawall is a
popular fishing spot, especially
on weekends.
In an even more serious
incident in June, Porscha
swallowed a fish hook on the
same stretch of pathway.
“I felt sick to my stomach. I
know what it’s like to get
a fishing hook in your finger,
but to have it stuck down
your throat, I was thinking
the worst the whole time,”

Hewitt said.
Expecting his 13-year-old
dog to need surgery, Hewitt
is grateful vets managed to
remove the hook with medical
pliers under anesthesia.
Porscha made a quick
recovery on both occasions.
On November 22, another
dog was snagged by
fish hooks.
Mt Pleasant resident
Wayne was walking
his dog Sophie
opposite Te Raekura
Redcliffs School when
she was injured
by hooks to the nose,
leg and chest.
Wayne said the dog,
also a miniature schnauzer, got
tangled in fishing line left on
the footpath, causing the hooks
to pierce into her.
“It was a hell of a shock to us.
I couldn’t even get her to move
because that was only getting
the hook in her nose to dig in
further,” he said.
Wayne took Sophie to the
vet and she has since recovered
from her injuries.

A REDCLIFFS cottage
surrounded by mansions
but deemed unworthy of its
beachfront location has sold
under the hammer for $1.675m.
The owners had shelled out
$1.6 million for the development
site on Beachville Rd in 2020
with intentions to build their
dream home, but a change of
plans saw them putting it back
on the market last month.
The listing for the property
said the house was “clearly not
worthy” of the prime waterfront
position surrounded by $2mplus
homes. The cottage was
liveable and had been tenanted,
but was uninsurable in its
current state.

NEW DATE SET FOR
SQUASH CLUB DISPUTE
The ongoing legal dispute over
the Mt Pleasant Squash Club
premises has a new arbitration
date. It was scheduled for last
month but will now be held
from February 19-20. The
dispute between the club and
the Mt Pleasant Community
Centre began when the club
was issued a notice in April to
terminate its licence to occupy
the McCormacks Bay facility.
Squash club president Hamish
Methven said the community
centre requested a delay in the
arbitration, initially planned for
last month. Community centre
manager Derek McCullough
said the centre would not
comment on the reason
behind the delay until after the
arbitration.
SURFER RESCUES
YOUNG SWIMMER
A quick thinking surfer
rescued a young swimmer at
Scarborough beach on Sunday.
The young person got stuck
in a rip in the morning, but
was spotted by the surfer and
pulled back to shore near the
coastguard building. First aid
was rendered by Coastguard’s
Dave Passmore, who was in the
building. An ambulance was
called and the swimmer cleared
by paramedics.

He said dog walkers have been
trying their best to clean up the
hooks and lines themselves.
“It’s a real major problem for
us walkers. We can only do so
much, but we try do what we can
to pick the rubbish up.”
Not wanting to cast blame on
all fishers in the area, Hewitt
said he does not take issue with
most of the hobbyists.
“I like watching fishermen
catch fish, it’s quite interesting.
It’s not so cool when they leave
their rubbish behind.”
Hewitt believes part of the
problem is the lack of rubbish
bins along Beachville Rd.
City council ranger Robbie
Hewson said “adding rubbish
bins wouldn’t necessarily fix the
problem”.
He said rubbish bins could
encourage more dumping on the
road.

council rangers will monitor the
issue over summer.
He said staff will pick up any
fishing rubbish they find and
remind fishers in person of their

Sprayer linked to
fish deaths in river

FINDING THE owner of a
garden sprayer could help find
out who is responsible for a
chemical spill that resulted in the
deaths of more than 500 fish.
Environment Canterbury investigators
are asking the public
to come forward with any information
about the sprayer, which
they believe to be responsible for
the March spill in the Ōpāwaho
Heathcote River.
The sprayer was found on the
riverbank opposite Cumnor
Tce, Woolston, shortly after the
March 1 incident.
“After investigating and excluding
all other known and likely
potential causes of the chemical
spill, we now believe that this
sprayer could have contained
the substances that caused this
event,” said ECan Resource Management
Act investigator Valyn
Barrett.
Barrett said the chemical traces
in the sprayer were from a commercial
weed spray that can be
toxic to fish.
“We are asking anyone who
knows who it could belong to, to

Investigators hope some of the
distinctive features of the sprayer
will help the public identify its

The blue-and-white sprayer

a reasonable doubt, before they
can make a public allegation.
This is why the investigators
have only been able to make their
interest in the garden sprayer
public now, months after the
incident.
“We need to be certain before
we make allegations that could
affect a person or group,” said
Barrett.

Long said the spill was a “terrible
disaster”.
The river network is doing what
it can to alert the public to the
ECan request, said Long.
“Anything that threatens the
ecology of the river is a concern
to us.”

Cycleway from city to
Heathcote now open
A NEW section of the Heathcote cycleway
is now open, from The Tannery to the
Heathcote Valley.
In a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday,
the Puari ki Kahuhura Heathcote Expressway’s
second section was opened.
It runs from The Tannery along Cumnor
Tce beside the Ōpāwaho Heathcote
River, then onto Vaila Pl before cutting
through Kennaway Reserve along State
Highway 74.
It then crosses Scruttons Rd before
following the railway tracks past Ferrymead
Heritage Park to Truscotts Rd and
Martindales Rd.
The first section of the cycleway, connecting
the central city to The Tannery,
opened in 2019.
The new section includes a mix of pathway
and boardwalks, as well as new fencing
along the route, lighting for visibility
and two new railway crossings.
Said Heathcote councillor Sara Templeton:
“I am so thrilled to see this cycleway
open, it has been hugely anticipated by the
local community and will provide another
safe option for people to use.”
The project cost $13.8 million with
$8.2m from Rau Paenga through the
Government’s shovel ready programme.

Coastal Pathway ‘well worth the wait’
THE FINAL section of the
Coastal Pathway has officially
opened to the public, marking
the completion of the decadelong
project.
Deputy mayor Pauline Cotter
said the already completed sections
of the pathway have been
attracting about 16,000 users a
month, and that’s expected to
increase.
The final section of the pathway
in Moncks Bay was opened
in a ribbon-cutting ceremony
last Thursday.
The pathway will make the
route from the city to Sumner
more accessible for non-motoring
transit.

Coastal Pathway
is already proving
to be a popular
draw and is well
worth the wait,”
Pauline
Cotter
said Cotter.
Running 6.5km
from Ferrymead
Bridge to Scarborough beach, the
shared pathway aims to increase
access and safety for people
walking, cycling, scooting or
skating along the coast.
“Given the coastal environment
and how narrow the worksite
has been, the whole project
has been a physically challenging
one,” said Cotter.
“The finished product is a
beautiful asset to the whole city,
and we’re sure it’s more than
worth the hassle.”
The concept for the pathway
was approved by the city council
in 2013 and was made possible
with support from the Government’s
shovel ready project fund.
“The pathway is an example of
the community taking the lead
and working together with the
council to get a great result.”

cycleway.
“It creates a safe and beautiful
connection between communities

Sander said the pathway will
provide safer transport options
for all, especially children on
bikes going to school.
“Christchurch pre-earthquake
used to see itself as a gateway to
other South Island tourist spots.
However, the reality is that it is
in a stunningly beautiful and
interesting setting in its own
right,” said Sander.
He hopes the pathway will
encourage visitors to stay longer
in the coastal areas made more
accessible.
ALL DONE: After a decade
in the making, the Coastal
Pathway is now complete
and fully open to visitors.

Planking for a good cause

PIECES OF the old Governors
Bay jetty are on sale to help
pay for the recently completed
rebuild.
The jetty restoration trust is
selling the timber, along with
leftover wood from the rebuild,
at an open day this Saturday.
Trust secretary Louisa Eades
said the sales were a “win, win,
win” – recycling the wood,
funding the restoration and
remembering the old jetty.
“Everyone gets a bit of jetty at
their place,” Eades said.
The trust needs $350,000 to
pay for its remaining share of the
$3.8 million restoration project.
The city council is paying for the
other half of the rebuild.
The trust took out a loan to
finance the remaining 9 per cent,
which it aims to recoup through
fundraising.
The wood sales are its biggest
fundraiser to date.
There is a large amount of
recycled timber available, including
ironbark and Australian
hardwood. Some of it dates back
to 1913.
New offcuts will also be available.
Prices range from $1 for a
short plank of treated pine to
$150 for a metre of quality hardwood.
Eades said visitors could buy as
much or little as they wanted.
The trust is also selling $600
plaques, enabling donors to have
their name placed on the new
jetty.
It has been almost two months
since the jetty reopened.

swimming, taking photos,

jumping, chatting, push biking,
remembering loved ones and just
contemplating,” said Eades.
For visitors on a busy weekend,
it is advised to park near Governors
Bay School and walk.
The old jetty was dismantled
during the restoration and
moved to a farm in Teddington.

from 10am-1pm Saturday.

Medical
centre
upgrades
UPGRADES TO the Diamond
Harbour Medical Centre will
start soon after it has been
granted $50,000.
The city council made the
grant to the centre in its meeting
on November 15, bringing
the centre to 93 percent of its
$670,000 goal.
“We are immensely thankful
to those that have seen the
vision and got right in behind
supporting the hard work our
committee and support partners
are putting in,” said centre
health support group president
Gay Pavelka.
The clinic currently serves
an older demographic with 22
percent of its patients over 65
and 60 percent aged between 40
and 50.
Pavelka said the 30-year-old
building lacks many of the
features required of a modern
medical facility.
“These deficiencies were
sharply illuminated by the Covid-19
pandemic.”
The main purpose of the
upgrade is to create more
space for doctors and nurses to
conduct their practice.

Volleyball inspires community connection

Community board
by-election update
A BY-ELECTION to fill a
vacancy representing the
Lyttelton subdivision on the
Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula Community Board
will be held in February 2024.
The by-election was
prompted by the resignation
of community board member
Reuben Davidson, who has
been elected to Parliament.
Electoral legislation requires
that if a vacancy arises on
council or a community board
more than twelve months
before the next triennial
election, an election must be
held.
The by-election will be held
on February 17, and will be
conducted by postal vote.
Nominations opened on
November 24 and close at noon
on December 22. Nomination
forms are available online at
ccc.govt.nz/elections or from
Te Hononga civic offices.
All candidates must be
New Zealand citizens and
enrolled on the Parliamentary
residential electoral roll.
Candidates need to be
nominated for the position by
two people who are enrolled
on the Lyttelton community
subdivision electoral roll.
If only one nomination is
received, a voting process will
not be held. If more than one
nomination is received, voting
will open on January 26 and
close at noon on February 17.
Progress results will then be
announced on the day.

Rikki Morris to open
Selwyn Sounds

EIGHTIES MUSIC star Rikki
Morris has been added to the
Selwyn Sounds line up and is
scheduled to open the day-long
festival in March.
Morris is best known for his
chart-topping hit Nobody Else
which won him New Zealand
songwriter of the year in 1988.
“We’re really, really pleased
to have him on board. It just
gives us more depth to our already
fantastic lineup,” said festival
promoter David Parlane.
The singer-songwriter performed
at Selwyn Sounds in
2019, alongside a who’s who of
New Zealand musicians known
as The Golden Kiwis.
He will play to an expected
crowd of 10,000 at Lincoln
Domain on March 2.
Morris has a long history in
New Zealand music.
He is younger brother of the
late Th’ Dudes member, Ian
Morris, with whom he released
music.
The musician has worked as a
sound technician for tours and
as a TV presenter.
He was also briefly a member

After a 25-year hiatus, Morris
made a strong return in 2021

in October, featuring Morris
and Anika Moa.

“Three major 80s UK artists
coming to New Zealand will
certainly be a highlight of the
festival,” said Parlane.
The 1980s cover band, AutoMatic80s
will also return as
part of the lineup.
“The AutoMatic80s have been
a crowd favourite for years at
Selwyn Sounds,” said Parlane.

Second release tickets are on
sale now ($149).
Parlane said he expects
Selwyn Sounds will sell out
completely before March.
“This has been an extremely
exciting year for us. Our ticket
sales have been going through

Figureheads and good fortune
THIS FINE female figurehead
from the barque Raupo is typical
of 19th century clipper ships
whose bows were often adorned
with elaborate carvings, which
were both an identifier and a
talisman for good fortune.
Across cultures and centuries
practices of decorating a vessel
served multiple symbolic,
patriotic and religious purposes.
From as early as 3000BC
Egyptian barges were painted
with the protective ‘Eye of
Horus’. The bows of Greek
and Phoenician galleons also
sported pairs of painted eyes,
or ferocious boars heads or
swift horses. Roman warships
(naves longae in Latin, from
whence the english word ‘navy’
derives) featured valourious
centurions. On Viking longships,
through AD 800-1100, dragons
or serpents snarled from high
prows. And in the mid 18th-19th
centuries Burmese royal barges
carried figureheads of important
mythical characters.
Throughout Polynesia and in
Aotearoa New Zealand, waka
horua (ocean going canoes),
waka ama (outrigger canoes)
and waka taua (war canoes) had
intricate, perforated, spiral carvings
supporting a carved tauihu
(prow).
On smaller fishing vessels
called waka tētē (or waka pakoko)
figureheads often took the
form of a stylised face with a protruding
tongue. In 2011, remains
of a carved waka found near the
Anaweka estuary in the Tasman
District were radiocarbon dated
to about 1400.
In the 17th and 18th centuries
English vessels carried
figureheads representing saints,
historical figures, a ship’s owner
or royal patron, naval leaders,

or emblematic animals such as
unicorns and lions. They served
as both signifiers of origin and
demonstrations of financial and
imperial might. However, the
weight of these large wooden
carvings mounted on the tip of
the hull could cause problems
with a ship’s manoeuvrability.
A move to three quarter rather
than full-sized figures made of
lighter woods like pine, rather
than the oak traditionally used,
went some way to addressing
that issue.
With the burgeoning of
merchant sailing in the 1850s,
the structure of the new clipper
ships bows allowed the mounting
of full size figureheads. The
vast majority were female figures
– they not only symbolically
represented the ‘eyes’ of the ship
watching out for the perils of the
wide ocean, but also the intrinsic
spirit of the vessel.
In maritime tradition ships
had long been referred to as
‘she’ in reference to women’s
beauty and grace being reflected
in a vessel’s elegant curves and
movements, and to represent the
powers of nurturing, protection
and support. Many figureheads
were bare breasted to emphasise
these feminine qualities.
There is a certain irony that
maritime superstition had it a
woman on board was unlucky,
causing distraction, and even
inciting ‘Mother Nature’ to ‘take
revenge’. Ordinary seaman,
working in what was a truly
perilous profession, embraced
these long-held traditions and
superstitions. Men grew to love
their ships and the figurehead
particularly was something they
were proud to take care of.
As to the Raupo’s history, at
the time of her construction
in 1876 by John Key and Sons
at Abden shipyard in Dundee,
Scotland, the 682 tonne ironhulled
barque was registered
as the Peru. Purchased by
J.J Craig in 1907 for moving
cargo between Aotearoa New
Zealand and Australia, she was
renamed Louisa Craig.
In 1916, her name and ownership
changed again when she
was bought by George Scales of
Wellington, renamed Raupo, and
used to ply the Tasman transporting
timber and coal. She
also made five voyages to San
Francisco carrying raupō (flax),
hemp and kauri gum, returning
with a hold full of cased oil.
In 1922, the Canterbury Steam
Navigation Company bought
the Raupo and towed her to
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour,
where she spent her last years in
use as a coal hulk. In 1937, she
was stripped down to the waterline
and beached at the ‘ships’
graveyard’ off Otamahua Quail
Island. Between 1902 and 1953
a total of 13 vessels were laid
to rest there, out of the way of
the harbour’s busy navigation
channels.
Where the Raupo’s darkhaired
figurehead ended up is
unknown, however Te Uaka’s
collection holds two other fine
examples – a crowned woman
garbed in blue from a French
vessel and a British naval
gentleman resplendent with
brass buttons and epaulettes.
