Volleyball inspires community connection
VOLLEY: The three Haajar teams and the Momshies team
celebrate a successful tournament at Cashmere High School.

MUSLIM WOMEN are finding
community through volleyball
thanks to the efforts of a Corsair
Bay resident.
“For us sports are not only for
physical wellbeing but spiritual,
social, psychological and emotional
wellbeing,” said Haajar
team manager Noraini Abbas
Milne.
The volleyball team, made
up of Muslim women, is part
of the Sow a Lyttel Seed (SALS)
initiative.
SALS was created by Milne as
a way to support the community

Milne said she has seen the
team members grow in confidence
since joining.
“They are confident in giving
speeches to a group of women
when we want to promote the
story of the Haajar volleyball
team.”
On the day, the Haajar team
was split into three colour teams.
They played against each other

through pool play followed
by intense finals, creating an
atmosphere of friendly rivalry,”
said event organiser Cathy Lum-
Webb.
The Momshies team won the
competition.
Based out of Lyttelton, SALS
organises community events
and opportunities, often with a
particular focus on the needs of
Muslim women.
Milne said SALS was partly
inspired by the “unwavering support
and aroha from Lyttelton
Horizon
and the wider community.”
The Haajar team functions as a
welcoming and accessible space
for Muslim women to participate
in sport.
“We understand their needs,”
said Milne.
The tournament is organised
to have no male spectators.
Babysitting is provided for mothers
and break times are given for
praying if requested.
The Haajar team was
established in November last
year. They train weekly during
the season and will return to the
court in April next year.
