The Momshies team won the competition. Based out of Lyttelton, SALS organises community events and opportunities, often with a particular focus on the needs of Muslim women. Milne said SALS was partly inspired by the “unwavering support and aroha from Lyttelton Horizon and the wider community.” The Haajar team functions as a welcoming and accessible space for Muslim women to participate in sport. “We understand their needs,” said Milne. The tournament is organised to have no male spectators. Babysitting is provided for mothers and break times are given for praying if requested. The Haajar team was established in November last year. They train weekly during the season and will return to the court in April next year.
