Clowne & Renishaw Doorsteppa.
Winter has well and truly kicked in now with the temperatures
falling and misty mornings becoming the norm. Things show no
sign of slowing though in the community and there’s a packed

Sheffield Giants. Flag Football has just been announced as a
new sport added to the Olympic Program for the 2028 summer

Sheffield Giants American Football
Club ready for the Olympics!
Flag Football has just been officially announced as one of five new spors
added to the Olypic progam for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles
It’s the first me that flag football will be an
official Olympic Game, and the Sheffield
Giants are primed and ready to take the
sport into the new dawn.
We are so excited at this amazing prospect,
and hope to have some of our players
showcasing their talent at the Los Angeles
Olympic games and showing the sporng
community what the Sheffield Giants are
made of.
WHAT IS FLAG FOOTBALL
I HEAR YOU SAY?
Flag football is a non-contact variaon of
American football. Seven-me Super Bowlwinning
quarterback Tom Brady played Flag
football from elementary school through to
his first year at high school. This set him up to
go on to be an uerly amazing quarterback.
SO, HOW DO YOU PLAY IT?
The aim of the game is to score touchdowns,
just like in American Football. But you can
tackle people by removing one of their ‘flags’
which are aached to a belt around the
player’s waists, with one on each side.
Play starts at a team’s own five-yard line, the
‘centre’ snaps the ball back to the
quarterback, who can either throw the ball
forwards to a receiver, or hand off to a
running back.
The play is over when either a flag is
removed, the player carrying the ball goes
out of bounds, a forward pass hits the
ground, or a touchdown is scored. Each
team will have four aempts – otherwise
known as ‘downs’ – to reach the halfway
line. If they are successful, they have
another four downs to reach the endzone
to score a touchdown. If not successful,

play goes to the opposion.
There are five players on each team and
squads tend to be 12-15 players.
The game is made up of two twenty minute
halves, but don’t be fooled thinking that it's
only 40 minutes, you will not be
disappointed. If the score is ed aer 40
minutes, sudden-death overme begins.
It sounds more complicated than it is… it’s a
fast moving, acon-packed, excing game
to both watch and play!
WHO ARE THE SHEFFIELD GIANTS?
Sheffield Giants American Football Club, led
by dedicated volunteers, are based in
Mosborough and Hillsborough, and have
teams available for players from 7 years up
to adult, in both Flag football (7+) and
Contact football (13+). The teams are open
for all genders, of all abilies and sizes.

United States for the Oklahoma Sooners.
The adult teams, based in Hillsborough,
have both mixed and women’s Flag teams
and a mixed contact team. There have been
several players represenng GB this year,
one player was part of the European
Championship winning Women’s Flag team
this summer.

Eckington Schools join together to honour the fallen
Eckington School, Eckington
Junior School, Birkhill Infant's,
and Camms C of E School, all
joined together for the 3rd year
running to honour the fallen of
Eckington.
Preparaon started the week
before when the poppy net
again went up in St Peters and
St Pauls Church.
Eckington Junior school planted
the poppies around the
Cenotaph.
Camms School and Rainbows
Play Group planted the poppies
in the poppy field.
More poppies were then added
later by Eckington School and
Birkhill Infant's.
Rev Andy gave a lovely service
and for the last post this year
Pete played the bagpipes, and
Jan played the bugle.
MP Lee Rowley also joined the
schools to remember the fallen.
It was a fantasc turnout, and
the sun even came out!

The Perfect Christmas Gift
A HISTORY OF MINING by Paticia Bone
(on behalf of Killamarsh Heritage Societ)
Killamarsh has a long and proud history as a
coal mining area, with coal being mined since
at least the 15 th century with many small pits
being opened over the centuries.
Weshorpe Colliery opened in 1923 when the
first sod was cut on the 17 th of March, which
means that 2023 marks the 100 years
anniversary.

us. However, many
of their children,
grandchildren and
great grandchildren
sll live in the area
and for them our mining heritage and the
memory of Weshorpe pit should be kept
alive.
During its lifeme the pit provided
employment for many men and women and
was successful in aaining many targets in
coal producon.
Weshorpe Colliery played a huge part in the
working and social lives of the people of
Killamarsh and the surrounding villages and
resulted in a very close community.

Lasses, The Bevan Boys, Naonalisaon and
more. And we remember Weshorpe pit
with the Telephone Exchange, the Pit Head
Baths, Pit Checks, the Miners’ Holiday Camp,

photographs which I am sure will bring back
many memories.
