Firefighters’ desperate bid to
save colleague and ‘great mate’
TRAGIC: Popular volunteer firefighter Gavin Lack died after a sudden major medical event last week.
PHOTOS: LINCOLN VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE
• By Daniel Alvey and Ben
Tomsett
WHEN volunteer firefighters
got the call to attend a medical
emergency, the address was far
too familiar.
It belonged to one of their
own; highly respected senior
firefighter and great mate Gavin
Lack. The 51-year-old had suffered
a major medical event.
Some volunteers raced directly
to Lack’s home in Lincoln,
bypassing normal procedure to
go to the station and depart to
the callout from there.
They worked desperately on
their colleague and were soon
joined by other volunteers and
ambulance paramedics, but
Lack died soon after.
Family members were there.
“A couple of us knew straight
away it was Gav’s place so we
went straight to the job and the
truck followed,” said Lincoln
senior station officer Kyle
Steans.
“We did what we could but it
wasn’t to be.”
Steans said it was one of the
toughest calls he’s ever had to
take in his 25 years in the fire
service.
“WE DID WHAT we could
but it wasn’t to be.”
Those were the emotive
words from Lincoln senior
station officer Kyle Steans
this week over the death of
colleague Gavin Lack (see
page 1).
Gavin died of a medical
event last week, despite the
valiant attempts by volunteer
firefighters and ambulance
paramedics to save him.
Gavin was a senior
firefighter at the Lincoln
station, and when the address
of the callout came through
the emergency system, his
colleagues knew exactly who
the property belonged to.
A GROUP of Brookside
residents are getting ready to
fight the second application for a
solar farm.
KeaX is applying for resource
consent to build a 111ha solar
farm on land along Buckleys
Rd and Branch Drain Rd, about
10km north of Leeston.
If approved, the solar array
will comprise about 140,000
tracking solar panels. Once
operational the solar array will
be capable of generating up to
about 50 megawatts of AC power
and 75 megawatts of DC power
– renewable electricity to be fed
back into the grid via the Brookside
substation.
It is the second time the company
has applied for a resource
consent. The first was declined
in March last year.
One of eight opposers, retired
ecologist Ray Henderson lives
about 500m from the planned
installation and argues the panels
would cause environmental
harm to the soil.
Henderson said those opposing
the application are working
together as a group.
He said over time solar panels
can leak heavy metals and other
chemicals into the soil.
“The applicant asserts he will
maintain the productivity of
the land through irrigation, yet
there are no details . . . furthermore,
there is no information
on how he will limit heavy
metals and leachates that
make the land less productive,”
he said.
Henderson said he has
gathered evidence over the
past year to present to the
hearing commissioner.
KeaX managing director
Campbell McMath
disputes Henderson’s view
PROTEST:
A sign was
attached to
the outside
of the
Brookside
substation in
December.
Right – a
map of the
proposed
solar farm
near Leeston.
and says the project will improve
soil condition.
“Solar panels are not classified
as hazardous. There are many
examples around New Zealand
and the world where solar panels
are used in close proximity to
humans,” McMath said.
The solar panels will
be on highly productive
land, but McMath said
the land will also be
used for things such as
grazing sheep under the
panels.
“There are many reports
showing a higher
quality wool from solar
farms, and better animal
husbandry, as the animals are
not as stressed in the baking sun
– they can shelter from wind,
rain and snow.”
At the first resource consent
hearing the commissioner
declined the application for not
meeting the standard to pass the
highly productive land requirement.
McMath said KeaX has
provided more evidence on the
future productivity of the land.
Henderson is also opposing
the application for noise, potential
glare and fire risk.
No date has been set for the
hearing, but it is likely to be
in March.
REMEMBERED: Gavin Thomas Lack rose through the ranks of the Lincoln Volunteer Fire
Brigade across 12 years.
PHOTOS: LINCOLN VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE
Volunteers’ ‘toughest call’
• From page 1
“It was a pretty sad day. The
last few days have been rough
for everyone in the brigade,” said
Steans.
Since the tragedy last week,
the brigade has been focusing on
looking after each other, Steans
said.
“We had a debrief at the job,
and after at the station, and some
brigade-based catch ups over
the weekend. A lot of members
have been also checking in, and
visiting others as well.”
Lack’s service with the brigade
spanned 12 years, four months
and 19 days, from August 17,
2011 to January 4.
Steans said he had known
Lack since before he became
a firefighter. He was kind and
gentle.
“He stands out as someone
with a common-sense, practical
approach and a calm demeanour.
I can’t recall ever seeing him angry,
even during moments when
he might have been frustrated.
He’s a fantastic person to work
with, and we’ve been good mates
from the start,” he said.
Lack was passionate about photography
which is how he became
a volunteer firefighter.
When the Lincoln station
sounded, Lack would turn up
and follow the crews to a fire
which he would then photograph.
He soon became their official
brigade photographer and
eventually joined the brigade as
operational support.
In 2016 he graduated as a
firefighter and eventually worked
his way up to become a senior
firefighter.
Lack also became a Fire and
Emergency NZ staff member,
having roles as a fire investigator,
in the risk reduction team,
logistics and as a member of the
Urban Search and Rescue team.
Steans said Lack quickly rose
to senior level within the brigade,
and undoubtedly had the
potential to achieve even more.
Treatment plant fault
causes water problems
• By Daniel Alvey
UPGRADES to Prebbleton’s
water supply will be in place
by the end of the year to stop a
repeat of a recent failure.
Residents were left with very
little water pressure after a treatment
plant fault on multiple days
between Christmas and New
Year.
Deputy mayor and Prebbleton
resident Malcolm Lyall said his
water was still running but only
at a trickle.
“It was enough to make a cup
of tea, but not have a shower,”
Lyall said.
Council head of operational
delivery Gareth Morgan said
both treatment plants had to be
shut down.
“There was a fault at one of the
two treatment plants serving the
town and this created a spike
impacting the capacity of the
other plant which shut it down
requiring a manual restart,”
Morgan said.
Morgan said upgrades to
the system are currently being
worked on with the completion
date set at the end of 2024.
“We are in the process of
upgrading the UV system and
Reservoir storage for Prebbleton.”
New year, fresh
faces for troubled
community board
• By Daniel Alvey
THE REBUILDING of the district’s only
community board is under way, with two
new members joining it.
John Verry, of Darfield, and Phil
Freeman, of Hororata, have been elected to
the Malvern Community Board following
a by-election, with Verry winning the
Hawkins seat and Freeman the Tawera
seat.
The by-election was triggered after
infighting and name-calling between
former board members. Sean Ellis
resigned in late August followed by chair
Ken May a week later.
May took a swipe on his way
out at his fellow board members
saying, “I’m too old to be pissing
around with children.”
He singled out Calvin Payne
and Sharn Nu’u as “no brainers”,
and said Ellis thought he was
“god”.
But Nu’u and Ellis shot back
saying May was not acting
appropriately as chair, with Ellis calling
May’s comments “vulgar” and “uncouth”.
Now the board is looking to move
forward with council chief executive
Sharon Mason ready to implement a new
direction.
“We’re going to set up an orientation
day in early February and we are going
to bring the whole community board
together and orientate everybody from
scratch,” Mason said.
She said the orientation will cover
what it means to be a community board
member, roles and expectations.
Also to be decided is who will take the
role of chair, with Bruce Russell interim
chair.
Mason said the chair may not be
Sharon
Mason
decided at the first meeting.
“What we’re keen to do is let the new
members get their feet under the table.
Perhaps at the second or third meeting
they can determine the chair.
“I think the key thing is they have to get
to know each other,” she said.
Verry, who moved to Darfield from
Auckland a year ago, was happy to get the
vote from the community over others who
have been in the area longer.
“I was batting a bit uphill being a
newcomer with the two other people being
fairly long incumbents of the area so it was
quite pleasing to get there.”
Verry will try to ensure the
community halls identified
by the council as having low
utilisation stay in the hands of the
community.
Verry has held senior
management roles in tertiary
education. He has worked for
many years as a lawyer at district
councils, including manager,
legal and in-house counsel, and
was a legal adviser for Honiara City
Council in Solomon Islands. He is now
retired.
Freeman has spent about 25 years in
Hororata and has been the owner of
Bossman Engineering since 2013.
Freeman has been involved in school
boards in the past and has been the
chair of the former Hororata Reserve
Committee, as well as helping out at the
Hororata Trust.
Freeman’s focus will be ensuring the
smaller communities are heard.
“When they got rid of all the
community committees they lost their
voice and contact between the community
and council,” Freeman said.
Lincoln’s Good Samaritan strikes again
• By Niva Chittock
DEAN GRAHAM, the now not
so secret Good Samaritan, has
been at it again.
In the days leading up to
Christmas, Graham paid for
people’s petrol, groceries and
even fish n’ chips.
It all happened in Graham’s
hometown of Lincoln, and it
didn’t take long for his identity to
be revealed once people started
posting on Facebook to express
their gratitude to the mystery
man.
“To the person at pump one at
Challenge Lincoln, who paid for
pump five around 8.40, thank
you so much!” one said.
“My card declined, and when I
went to call my parents, someone
paid for my fuel. You made me
cry – thank you for your generosity.
There are still some good
people out in the world.”
The son of late Mainfreight
rich-lister Neil Graham, he
said over time his identity had
become less of a secret, but he
wouldn’t be changing his ways
any time soon.
Said Graham: “There’s so
much doom and gloom around;
I guess I like doing it because
it shows that people care. And
if I can make someone’s day,
especially when they’re having a
s****y day, why not?.”
Another person said the good
Samaritian had paid for the
remainder of their fish ‘n’ chips
at Lincoln Fish Supply.
“My son didn’t take enough
cash. He was going to come
home and get more, but a kind
man offered to fix the rest of the
bill! How kind! He wanted to
come back and repay you but
since you had gone, thank you
again!”
Another thanked them for
covering some groceries at the
supermarket.
“I was out at the car getting
my forgotten wallet. You don’t
know me – I work in healthcare
and have had three huge days at
work, [and am] still recovering
from a bout of Covid one month
DO GOOD: In 2021, Dean Graham paid $10,000 for a
cardboard Lamborghini, with funds going to Starship
Hospital in Auckland, before auctioning it again for
another charity.
GENEROUS: Dean Graham has paid for people’s groceries and petrol over the festive season.
down the track and feeling a bit
of brain fog,” they said.
“While financially I am not in
need, I was very much in need of
a good deed and some kindness.
You mentioned to the supermarket
lady to pay it forward,
so I have done my own version
of paying it forward somewhere
else in Lincoln . . . It made my
day.”
A New World shopper got a
surprise when their card wasn’t
working.
“Thank you so much to the
absolute legend who paid for
my son’s treats at New World
yesterday when my card wasn’t
working for them. Let me know
if I can pay you back. We are so
grateful, as we were having quite
a busy and stressful day.”
Graham said he just enjoyed
the effect it had on people.
It all began in Auckland when
he was at a concert with his partner,
he said.
“I could see this family there
and could hear them (saying),
‘Oh no, we can’t just order this
and order that’ – they were
struggling a bit,” Graham said.
“I thought to myself, ‘You
know what, I’m just going to pay
their bill and walk out . . . It will
just be a nice thing to do’.”
“I was very much in need of a good deed and some
kindness . . . It made my day.” – One recipient of
Graham’s actions
That was four years ago, and he
has done it dozens of times since.
It was even better when the
generosity was passed on, Graham
said.
“I did in Hornby, it was in a little
shop that made beautiful pork
sandwiches. I could see there
were older people behind me,
and I paid for theirs as well and I
walked out,” he said.
“I went in again maybe three
weeks later and the lady said to
me, ‘Oh, you’re that guy that paid
for that couple’s lunch!’
“She went, ‘You’re not going to
believe this. They did it the next
week for someone else’. So if you
can spark that sort of thought,
and spread that feeling, it’s a
good thing.”
An urban legend falsely
claimed it all began when Graham
won Lotto.
“No, I haven’t won Lotto at all,
but I’m not short of a quid . . . I
just love doing it. I like seeing
people buzzing,” he said.
of motorcycles and vehicles, and
pride of place, featured in Selwyn
Among his collection are two
of the Harley-Davidsons used in
the 1969 cult classic Easy Rider
which Graham bought about
four years ago near Auckland for
$740,000.
Easy Rider is Graham’s favourite
movie.
He also bought a cardboard
Lamborghini for more than
$10,000 being auctioned for
Starship Hospital in Auckland
in 2021, and then put it up
for auction again for another
charity.
LETTERS 13
Lower speed limits not necessary;
call to restrict rates rises
I AM all in favour of reduced
speeds outside schools,
particularly primary schools, as
we all know small children can
be very impulsive.
However, I feel the speed
limit does not need to be reduced
permanently to 30km/h. Speeds
need to be reduced only at
morning arrival and afternoon
pick-up, during term times.
There are no children at the local
primary school now until late
January/early February, so do
we really need the traffic to be
restricted to 30km/h along James
St all that time?
Lincoln Primary School has
a very efficient school crossing
patrol assisting children across
James St. The police do a great
job training the children who
undertake the crossing duties,
and from what I can see, every
patrol is also supervised by an
adult.
Possibly what needs to be
addressed is the number of cars
dropping children off and picking
them up. I see cars parked
the length of James St from
almost the fire station up as far
as the old maternity hospital and
the full length of East Belt.
Maybe as well as reduced speed
limits, there could be parking
restrictions close to the school to
improve visibility.
-Lynda Gowers
Delayed speed limit changes
outside schools are an unfortunate
consequence of the previous
Government and Waka Kotahi’s
flawed approach.
Slower speeds around schools
when children are about makes
sense. However the blanket
approach, adopted by Selwyn
District Council and mandated
by Waka Kotahi, would mean
30km/h no matter whether it’s
the holidays, 9am or 9pm. Only a
few schools were sensibly identified
for ‘smart’ speed signs that
deactivate out of school times.
The blanket approach applied
CHANGES: Readers respond to the December 20 Selwyn Times article in which Lincoln
and West Rolleston Primary schools voiced their concerns about Government’s pausing of
speed limit changes.
not only to schools, but a multitude
of roads across Selwyn. It
was predicated on what might
happen, not what the evidence
supported. Basically, slow us
down everywhere, just in case.
Targeted lowering of speed
limits might be part of the solution,
but it seems to have become
the solution. Coincidentally the
council also noted following the
previous consultation that slower
speeds will allow them to spend
less on road maintenance.
The council’s latest consultation
document contained several
factual errors – simple mathematical
mistakes. Perhaps this
is symptomatic of the lazy and
cheap approach.
Many things about this new
Government are not good, but
stopping blanket speed limit
changes and requiring evidencebased
targeted changes instead is
a good thing.
-Aaron McGlinchy
Potential big rates rises
Reading the letters to the
editor took the taste out of my
festive drink.
I would question one’s ability
to pay for the intended rates
hike, compounded by excessive
insurance costs.
2024 is not a year to work behind
closed doors, all ratepayers
need to be included, let’s have no
hidden agendas.
-Colin Giddens
I have been reading the comments
(on the rates increase).
Good on them telling council to
control its spending. Ratepayers,
businesses and community
groups all across the motu
(country) are all trying to cope
with inflation and increased
interest rates.
(Mayor) Sam Broughton does
a solid job, but instead of suggesting
he’d stand for no rate
increases over 20 per cent, why
doesn’t he lead the charge?
In his role as president of Local
Government NZ why can’t
he demand all councils contain
wasteful expenditure to keep
rates lower? Wasteful spending
can be found everywhere. The
extra spending on the fancy box
cladding on the library building
may well have covered running
our various rural community
halls for years. And does Darfield
really need four signs on the
same corner to identify where
the library and service centre
is? They’re just two examples.
Perhaps we should have a readers’
competition to expose more?
Who, besides me, would back
a petition to Nicola Grigg to
take to Parliament asking for a
law change to restrict local and
regional councils to rate rises of
no more than the annual rate of
inflation?
A law change compelling them
to work within the same financial
constraints the average family
has to face is long overdue.
Restricting rates rises would help
-Alan Peacock, Darfield
Many ratepayers in Selwyn
have expressed dismay at the
suggestion of the potential 20
per cent or higher rate increase,
and the timing of the announcement.
I fully support those
views.
However what has not been
stated is: Why that announcement
by the mayor? Why now?
With the rapid growth in
Selwyn, most of infrastructure
is less than 20 years old. So what
massive infrastructure upgrade
is required according to the
mayor?
Selwyn is not Wellington or
Auckland. If there is, however,
a looming massive upgrade required
somewhere, why was that
not conveyed years ago? Did he
just wake up to it?
What have the mayor and
those councillors with many
terms/years at the council done,
apart from keeping their seat
warm?
If they are unable to effectively
govern and oversee the
multi-million dollar business
(which the Selwyn council is)
they should vacate their seats
promptly.
Family reunited with missing puppy
• By Pierre Nixon
WHEN A family’s puppy
vanished from the back of their
ute as they drove to walk him
in a forest area they feared the
worst.
But a Christmas miracle
came early for the Nichol
family of West Melton. Their
9-month-old jack russell, Ruger
– affectionately known as Roo –
was found alive and completely
unscathed 24 hours after he
tumbled from the vehicle.
The pup’s owner Sharon Nichol
said her two teenage children
and her father were preparing to
take Roo on a walk around the
Hanmer Heritage Forest.
Nichol said as the trio were
leaving, her son Cam carefully
tied Roo to a clip on the back of
her father’s Hilux.
But when they arrived at the
heritage park, Roo was nowhere
to be seen.
Cam took to social media to
alert the local community, hopeful
someone would come across
Roo.
The group then retraced their
journey on bike and on foot.
There was no sign of the small
pooch and the family was devastated.
“It was just a really horrible
situation, I just felt sick and
because I’m still in Christchurch
working, getting through the last
of my work before Christmas,
I just felt helpless, like I just
couldn’t do anything,” Nichol
said.
Then, when it felt like all hope
was fading, Sharon received a
message, suggesting she contact
Don Schwass, who runs the Nelson
search dog/tracking page.
Schwass, who has a background
in tracking from 30
years of search and rescue land
tracking experience, first began
helping people find lost dogs 20
years ago.
“He rang me and asked me to
send him a pin drop of the start
and finish points of the journey
that they took in the Hilux, and
he came back to me this morning
with an idea of where Roo
would most likely be found,”
Nichol said.
“Part of his theory was Roo was
REUNITED: Lani Nichol, 16,
and her brother Cam, 15,
with Roo, who sparked a
frantic search after he fell
off the back of a ute near
Hanmer. Above - master
tracker Don Schwass
helped the family find
their dog.
unlikely to be in the area of the
Hanmer Springs Village, based
on the fact that no one had seen
him.”
Sharon’s father Gary Rule,
from Hamner, also played a
major part in finding the young
pup.
“My dad, in an absolute piece
of brilliance, decided to contact
the local police officer to see if
they had any camera footage of
the road where they were travelling
yesterday morning – and
they found footage of the truck
with the dog on it and without
the dog.”
The CCTV footage helped
narrow down the search to a few
hundred metres.
It was then, after 24 anxious
hours, Cam found Roo at Dog
Stream Reserve under a log, inside
the Hanmer Heritage Forest.
“It was probably a 60 or 70km
trip and he would have landed
on the road but he’s literally got
nothing, no injuries, no scars or
anything, he was just a little bit
hungry,” she said.
She described how she felt
when she heard Roo had survived.
“You know that feeling when
you have a near miss in your
car and it’s like your body is just
flooded with adrenaline and
relief.
“(I’m) just massively relieved,
so proud of my dad and both
of my kids, you know, they just
didn’t give up looking for him.”
OpenAI: Are historians in jeopardy?
Retired
microbiology
lecturer and
amateur
historian
Mike
Noonan, who
lives near Dunsandel,
discusses how accurate
internet programs
are when it comes to
towns and settlements
in the Selwyn District,
a year after starting his
research
WHEN OpenAI released
ChatGPT3.5, an Artificial Intelligence
chatbot program, to the
public last November, I suspect
that most readers of the Selwyn
Times had never heard of AI.
Now, I suspect at least their
children are using it sometimes
to help with their homework. At
the time I “asked” the program
to “tell” me about the history of
some of the towns in the Selwyn
District. The answers were so
inaccurate (termed “hallucinating”)
that I found them amusing
and the Selwyn Times published
an article (January 18, 2023).
In the last 12 months there
have been huge developments in
AI, with many new companies
making their AI programs available
online and so I decided to
see if the AI programs would
now provide reliable information
of Selwyn’s history even though
I am aware that most of Selwyn’s
history is still in paper-based accounts
and not online.
I tried three free programs (as
I don’t use AI enough to justify
paying for access) and asked each
to “tell” me about the history
of Dunsandel 1872-1900 as I
knew that this topic was covered
online.
Claude from Anthropic gave
me a summary of key events
which would have sounded
authentic to somebody who did
not know about Dunsandel,
as the main story was largely
correct but the details were
not. When I requested further
information on one topic,
namely the first hall, again I
was provided with information
which was believable, except it
wrongly informed me the hall
was opened in 1883 – rather,
it opened in 1874. Claude
“admitted” that it did not have
a specific source for the details
that it had provided, but that the
program had generated historical
details based on knowledge of
similar halls from small rural
towns of that era and, given that
the towns of Selwyn had similar
early developments, the narrative
was only incorrect in a few
details. Claude had aimed “to
construct a believable narrative”
as it had no ability to search the
internet.
When I asked for only accurate
statements about Leeston, I received
“the most accurate statement
I can make is that, Leeston
is a town . . . that was established
in 1864 by the Canterbury Association”.
The date is correct
but the Canterbury Provincial
Council had taken over from the
Canterbury Association in 1853.
Google’s Bard divided its
response to the same questions
into more-or-less verified
information, but much of it was
general and there were inaccurate
statements. It appeared
that Bard may have managed to
find digital information that has
recently been put on the Selwyn
Library program, Ka Korero
o Waikirikiri Selwyn Stories
(SS) but it did not provide its
sources. When quizzed about
its statement, “the hotel did not
have electricity until 1895,” it
“apologised” for its error and
stated that “electricity was
supplied to Dunsandel in 1900
and gave three references for its
“conclusion”.
1. The book “Dunsandel: A
History of the Town and District”
by John Wilson (1972)
states that electricity was supplied
to Dunsandel in 1900.
2. The website of the Canterbury
Museum states that
electricity was introduced to
Dunsandel in 1900.
3. The book “Electrical Power
in New Zealand: A History” by
R.H. Chapman (1987) states that
a hydro-electric power station
was built at Coal Creek in 1899,
and that electricity was supplied
to Dunsandel in 1900.
I was not able to find either
book on the National Library
catalogue, but an article published
in 1920 (October 20, 1920,
page 3, Ellesmere Guardian)
reported that “a public meeting .
. . to discuss the question of supplying
electricity to the residents
of the Dunsandel district was
held in the Town Hall last Saturday
night”, which suggests to
me that Bard is “hallucinating”
with its 1900 date and seemingly
authoritative sources.
When I asked Microsoft Bing
(Copilot), using GPT 4, the same
questions, it searched the internet
and copied text almost verbatim,
supplying easy access to the
sources. Bing definitely managed
to find digital information that
has recently been put on SS. The
GPT 3.5 of one year ago only had
web information from before
September 2021.
While SS is not the only source
of online historical information
about Selwyn, local historians
are adding information regularly
to SS, and in the not too
distant future it will probably
be the main reference point. If
Bing is going to quote almost
verbatim from this site, why not
go straight to SS? The downside
is that information about, for
example, each town’s hall will
be added in separate, but linked,
articles in SS and if you wanted
an article about all the halls in
Selwyn, in chronological order,
you would need to download
each article separately and then
rearrange the text. I tried to get
Bing to chronologically integrate
separate articles about the users
of the first Dunsandel Hall
which are in SS, but this failed
as Bing would only consider one
article at a time. Before too long,
I suspect unskilled people will
be able to complete this task, and
this will be the advantage of AI.
Bing and other AI programs
can do other things, including
drawing pictures, given a text
statement. This is not very useful
for history, as drawings and
photographs taken at the time
are required. However, nail
driving for ladies was once a
feature of horticultural shows
in Dunsandel and I generated a
picture, using Bing DALL-E3 to
illustrate an article in SS, until,
hopefully, I can replace it with
the real thing.
While AI has made considerable
strides in the last year – e.g.
“alphafold”, which is able to
outperform scientists in the
prediction of the structure of
proteins – it is not as useful in
Selwyn history until we can get
more information on the web
and it can be a little smarter in
dealing with beginners like me.
I am still convinced that my
hobby as an amateur historian is
not in immediate jeopardy.
Your guide to what’s
happening in Selwyn
over the Summer break
Great walks around Selwyn
Put on your walking shoes and get
out into the fresh air at some of Selwyn’s
amazing walking tracks and areas. Make
a day of it and take a picnic lunch and
your camera for those social mediaworthy
shots. Always check the weather
forecast before you head out and choose
a track that will suit your ability. Carry a
small backpack with layers, wet weather
gear, water, snacks, and a cell phone for
longer walks.
Lincoln-Liffey Domain and
Liffey Stream
It is an easy 30-minute walk, ideal for
families with small children. It starts at
the corner of Gerald and James Street in
Lincoln, and you can see the furnished
1875 Liffey Cottage on your travels.
Darfield-McHugh’s Forest Park
It is a great walk for the whole family,
including dogs and fun for the kids, with
several fairy doors to be on the lookout
for. The main track takes 20 minutes one
way, and the loop track is 50 minutes
return.
Windwhistle- Washpen Falls:
A 2-hour walk with the walking track
starts at Old Washpen Falls Woolshed.
Cost: $10 for adults, $5 for children. No
dogs allowed.
Castle Hill-Kura Tawhiti Access
Track:
This is an easy 20-minute walking
track to view the majestic limestone rock
formations of special significance to Ngāi
Tahu.
Castle Hill- Cave Stream Walk
Two short walks, approximately 30
minutes return, leading to the cave
entrances. The cave is 594 metres long.
No dogs allowed.
Harts Creek Track
It is a good track for beginning walkers
as it is completely flat and takes about 20
minutes each way. You’ll be able to spot
wildlife on the lakeside, and it’s a good
spot for a picnic.
THE NEWLY-expanded
Canterbury Country premier
men’s T20 competition starts on
Saturday.
The competition, formerly
just five games per team before
semi-finals and a final, will now
feature all nine teams playing
each other once for a total of
eight games before the knockout
rounds.
Weedons claimed the 2023
title but fast bowler Charlie
Robson is wary of the challenges
posed by a longer competition.
“Last year you could win three
of four games and end up in the
semi, but it’s wide open to anyone
this year,” he said.
Weedons start their campaign
away from home, playing Cheviot
and Oxbrook on Saturday,
with both games held in Rangiora.
Last year’s runners-up
Leeston-Southbridge are also
in action, playing Ohoka and
powerhouse Sefton, who have
started the one-day competition
strongly and lead the way after
making the semi-finals of both
the T20 and one-day competition
last year.
Darfield only have one game
on Saturday, playing Sefton in
the morning before enjoying a
bye in the afternoon.
Lincoln also only play once.
They have the morning off with
a bye before an afternoon fixture
against Peninsula-Harbour.
Robson said all teams have
improved their game this season.
“Ohoka have really stepped up,
Peninsula-Harbour are playing
really well too.
“Sefton are always strong as
well.”
DARYL MITCHELL will soon
be a multi-millionaire in the
Indian Premier League – but
he’s still got time for his local
club.
Mitchell was snapped up at the
IPL auction by Chennai Super
Kings for $2.8 million following
an intense bidding war.
The 32-year-old Black Caps
star moved to Lincoln with his
family in 2020 after joining
Canterbury Cricket. He is
registered for the Lincoln club –
but domestic and international
commitments mean he’s
only turned out once for the
club.
In that match against Leeston-
Southbridge in October 2020,
Mitchell scored 90 off just 64
balls with eight sixes – an early
sign of the form that would
propel him into the Black Caps
just months later.
Lincoln executive committee
member Richard Clark
played with Mitchell in the
match.
“The results he’s had in all
formats of the game over the
last few years have been pretty
spectacular,” he said.
“It’s probably quite a long
way from when he did make his
debut for the club.”
CLUB CRICKET: Mitchell receives his Lincoln and
Canterbury Country caps from Joshua Chapman (left) and
Austin Earl in 2020. PHOTO: LINCOLN CRICKET CLUB
Clark said Mitchell helps out
where he can, despite not being
able to play.
“He’s been very generous with
donating signed playing kit for
fundraisers we have at the club,
that kind of thing.
“It’s much appreciated from
our perspective. If he can’t
necessarily play for the club it’s
the one thing he can do.”
There were a number of club
members watching on Sky as
Mitchell went up for auction,
including Clark, who said it was
“cool” to see.
“We knew that Daryl was up in
the second group of players to be
auctioned,” he said.
“And we were, I guess, sort of
hopeful that he would get the
competition for his services but I
don’t think we could’ve dreamed
of the number it got to.”
Clark and everyone else will
be sure to cheer Mitchell and
his new team on when the IPL
season begins in March.
Club rugby: Who’s at the helm
Schulte takes the top job at
last year. He replaces former
head coach Ross Soper, who is
taking a break from coaching.
The Magpies suffered two
heartbreaking playoff losses in
2023, reaching the semi-finals of
the combined competition and
making it all the way to the Coleman
Shield final.
First-five Harry Peeters returns
Lea is a former division 2
Devereux coached Hornby last
Nuthall will be joined by Jodie
The Red Devils last year
celebrated their first division
Hemmingson said the club
will look to shore up the squad
SELWYN RURAL LIFE
Advertising Feature
Rural broadband – issues and choices
• By Isabelle Teresa
The issues with rural broadband are
multiple, and include services costing
more, not performing as well, or simply
being unavailable. The situation is
such that, last June, the Commerce
Commission launched a detailed study
of the internet options available to
the “significant number” of rural New
Zealanders not covered by the fibre
broadband network.
Until those findings come out, what
information can guide rural customers?
The Commission runs two ongoing
surveys that could help.
The first survey is about providers. It
asks 2,400 residential consumers every six
months about their satisfaction with their
broadband provider for both technical
performance and customer service, and
publishes the results as rankings.
Rural users should be aware that
there is no audience split-out; instead
the residential sample is weighted by
age, gender and region to be nationally
representative. Also, only providers
with a market share of 5% or more are
ranked, knocking out the smaller players.
Nevertheless, these reports are still a
useful indication of customer opinion.
The second survey drills down into
technical performance. The Commission
publishes quarterly reports from the
Measuring Broadband New Zealand
programme, based on specific usage
data gathered from volunteer
households across the country.
These reports give far more
detailed information about the
technical performance of different
types of broadband for particular
types of uses. They also break the
analysis down to providers and
to regions – although, typically
of nationwide publications, the
whole South Island is one region! Despite
this, if you need evidenced information,
this is the detailed report for you.
Rural-specific services do exist.
Farmside offers a wide range of plans
that address various rural family and
farming scenarios, including multi-site,
asset tracking, data boosts and zero-rated
partnerships with some core services. In
some cases, a technician needs to install
the kit.
The gamechanger has, of course, been
Starlink. The speeds are phenomenal and
these are literally the set-up instructions:
1) Plug it in.
It also helpfully adds that you can do
those instructions in either order!
So although rural broadband has been
a longstanding issue, the options and
information out there are evergrowing,
hopefully helping all rural customers
achieve the best option for their
situation.
Thank you very much for
your kind donations
• By Isabelle Teresa
On 14 December, 14 hours of fundraising
commitment and mayhem
took place, for a great cause. Rural
telethon “The Big Feed” livestreamed
from Lincoln University, raising over
700 thousand mince and milk meals
for foodbanks across the country – a
stunning result.
The event is organised by Meat The
Need, a three-year-old charity that
is farmer-founded and farmer-led.
Produce, in the form of premium mince
and milk, is donated by farmers and
put into the hands of foodbanks and
community organisations, who have the
channels to distribute the support.
The charity accepts sheep, beef or deer,
and also milk. It works with livestock
reps such as Silver Fern Farms, and with
milk processors such as Fonterra and
Miraka, to streamline the process of how
donations are enacted. The website has
easy-to-use forms to make this happen.
Financial donations are also welcome
in advance of and on the day. Anyone
can donate a “Virtual Animal”, to their
choice of amount, by credit card or
internet banking.
Prep for next year!
Although the event happens on one
day, it takes a year’s worth of planning
and coordination. You can start
supporting this good cause now for 2024.
Here’s some options:
• Organise and register a fundraising
event – this can happen at any point
during the year. Fundraising events and
totals get special shout-outs during the
telethon, and you can even submit video
footage of your event.
• Rural business supporters are
welcomed – start discussions in your
workplace.
• Start talking with your livestock reps
or milk processors about what level of
practical donation you can make in the
coming year, and how to make it happen.
• Keep an eye on the frequently
updated Facebook page for Meat The
Need NZ, for more ideas.
For full details on these options, see
meattheneed.org. Rest assured that 100%
of donations goes directly into feeding
families.
Meat the Need thanks its celebrity
hosts and all who participated and
donated, from the $3 texts to the
large-scale donations from the likes of
Fonterra and Miraka, Silver Fern Farms,
ANZCO Foods and FarmRight.
The Federated Farmers Board
personally donated $10,000 when its
President Wayne Langford, also cofounder
of Meat The Need, got a cow
tattoo!
Old MacDonald used
some Chatbot. AI-AI-O!
• By Isabelle Teresa
Picture this. You’re in the cab of your
tractor, again, going up and down the
same field… again… Bored with your
usual music/podcasts, you start puzzling
over a particular farming issue that you
need to solve.
Why not set your phone to work on
the puzzle? Chatbots and AI may seem
a million miles away from the field, but
in reality they are free tools that anyone
can use right now.
What is a chatbot?
Chatbots are like a far fancier
Google search, not only accessing
but amalgamating information. The
Artificial Intelligence (AI) aspect means
that they are constantly adapting to
interpret requests correctly, provide
more accurate answers and use more
human-sounding language.
How do I do it?
Just download one of the free chatbot
apps and type in a question.
The most famous is still ChatGPT,
which hit the headlines on release last
November and originally operated from
a database. Others quickly followed,
meeting different user needs, such as
You.com that accesses online material
and makes it easy for you to click
through to its sources.
Top tips for extracting useful answers
1. Think what type of expert you
would ideally be talking to, and tell
the app to be that. Eg, “You have been
farming wheat in Canterbury New
Zealand for the last 20 years. Tell me
what crop diseases I should know
about.”
2. Use the follow-up questions
function – this will help it provide info
that is more relevant to you. Eg, it might
ask you “What crop diseases have you
seen on your land?”, “What diseaseprevention
methods have you tried?”
3. Tell it what kind of answer you
want. Eg, “a one-page answer in plain
English”, “a table of facts and numbers”,
“use information from the year 2000
onwards”, “a bullet list of ideas”.
Things to watch out for
Check everything! AI should give you
good starting points but may not be
accurate in every detail.
As in all digital matters, privacy and
confidentiality are fraught topics, so
don’t tell it anything too confidential.
Most apps are free, although inevitably
the growth of “Professional” and paid
options will come. But in the meantime,
get experimenting and explore what this
technology can do for you.
Thoughts on sharing rural
life with the birds
• By Isabelle Teresa
We think we own the land, but we don’t.
There are other beings, boundaries, homes,
families, tussles…
In rural life, birds are our constant
companions. The dawn chorus starts our
days, conversations build and different
species tune in. Throughout the day, flocks
of small birds soar and swirl, acting as
one. Nestbuilders fly above with sticks and
straw, consummate designers and builders.
The falcon, kārearea, is sophisticated
enough to harness the winds in its flight –
but falls for the dangerous temptation of
roadkill – Icarus?
Families of pheasants bustle and snuffle,
bursting away with an explosion of sound,
leaving a tailfeather gift for the lucky. Quail
couples call to each other, loving, always
checking in, issuing a “Chicago” at the
slightest concern. Fantails, pῑwakawaka,
friendly or two-faced? The same darting
dance that beguiles humans turns
downright nasty when repelling its own
kind.
Magpies raise their family in our
presence. Recognising the faces of
humans who live on their land, they also
communicate to their kids whether you
are to be trusted. Magpie younglings patrol
the grass until a parent’s return – when the
incessant squawking would put anyone off
parenthood! In autumn, the adolescents
hilariously find their voice. Winter brings
eviction, with re-groupings hard fought for
next year.
Birds also teach geography and
perspective. Living rurally in Selwyn, I feel
land-based, grounded – my world is green
as far as the eye can see. Then water birds
swoop through and it’s like zooming out on
a map – we’re just a stopping point between
lakes, rivers and the sea.
Every winter, for two weeks, a pair of
Canadian geese arrive honkily in the
morning, rest on the same tree for five
minutes then fly on. Why??
After bad storms, a black shag chose our
woodpile as refuge, settling for the night
and dealing confidently with our curious
cat.
Most wonderful of all, late every
afternoon, the heron couple swoops in,
creaking and rasping – you don’t need
to sound tuneful when you look that
fabulous! I was told that the same couple
had been nesting in the same tree for 18
years. What a privilege to share this space.
Nighttime, and it’s still not over. The little
owl calls throughout the night, making the
most of our land while other birds sleep.
Did I say “our” land? Many other
beings say the same.
GARDENING
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Healthy blueberries are easy to grow
THE SWEETNESS and flavour
of freshly picked blueberries
are hard to match. The health
benefits are numerous and, what’s
more, they are a relatively easy
crop to grow.
They require a sunny position,
fertile soil and water to produce
an abundance of berries.
They are a source of vitamin C,
A, and E. To ensure good crops,
always plant more than one so
cross-pollination occurs. Blueberries
are versatile shrubs that can
be planted in many areas of the
garden because of their attractive
habits and foliage.
Try them planted in hedgerows,
use in garden borders or plant
along a driveway. Over recent
years a number of new varieties
have been bred in New Zealand.
These are proving to be very
popular with home gardeners.
Blueberries are perfect for pots or
containers but be aware that they
don’t like their root zone being
tampered with. Avoid underplanting
near their root zone.
Most blueberries require a
second plant to pollinate their
flowers. In cases where berries
are noted as being self-fertile, it
is still recommended to plant at
least two plants to ensure a good
harvest.
A number of varieties are
widely available throughout the
country. Garden centres normally
have good stocks all year round,
as the plants are sold in pots.
Rabbit eye varieties are selffertile
but by planting more than
one, cross-pollination will occur
and increase your yield.
Choose a sunny location with
moist but well-drained soil and
good circulation.
• Growing Guide
Blueberries need a sunny location,
in well-worked, acidic, free
draining fertile soil. Plant about
1m apart in rows. Blueberries
make a wonderful hedge. Trim to
shape as required.
Cover with bird netting if birds
are eating the fruit before you
can. Water well through dry periods
to ensure the fruit sets well.
When plants are young, remove
some of the flowers to encourage
more leaf and plant growth.
Young plants have a tendency to
overfruit when young, limiting
the plant’s growth and establishment.
Do not allow plants to sit in
water for long periods. Plant in
raised beds if winter rains are an
issue for you. The plants fruit on
previous season’s wood. Prune to
shape as required, being careful
not to remove the wood that will
produce next season’s fruit. Ideal
for pots and containers.
• Harvest
Allow to ripen in the plants to
maximise full flavour. Make sure
the birds don’t beat you to the
crop. Harvest when fruits look
ripe. Fruit stores well in the fridge
for a week or so. Bring to room
temperature before eating.
• How to use
Use fresh, in desserts, pies, jams
or jellies.
Suzuki Vitara Hybrid lively and effortless
DESPITE BEING offered in
Europe, the UK and Japan for the
last five years, Hybrid versions
of Suzuki’s SUV range have
just made it to this side of the
automotive globe.
It’s a case of better late than
never. The government’s clean
car fee and rebate scheme no
doubt played a part in Suzuki’s
decision to offer a hybrid version
of their popular Vitara here last
year. Ironically, the arrival in July
of tougher thresholds to qualify
for a rebate meant most hybrids,
including the Vitara, no longer
qualified for a rebate. Even worse,
some not-so-squeaky green
hybrids’ credentials cop a clean
car fee.
Launched here in 2015, the
Vitara quickly established itself
as one of Suzuki’s best sellers,
making it a prime candidate for
the hybrid treatment. In Europe
it is a sales success story and
Suzuki will be looking for it to
carry that good form into our
market. New Hybrid versions of
the Vitara Turbo offer better fuel
economy and lower emissions,
further broadening the appeal of
one of our most popular compact
five-door SUVs.
Three petrol/electric “mild”
Hybrids are available for our
market, including a rangetopping
All Wheel Drive. Suzuki
claim the Vitara Hybrid Turbo
is at least 15 per cent more
economical than its non-Hybrid
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Vitara siblings. It will help us all
breathe a little easier with up to
18 per cent lower CO2 emissions.
Prices start at $39,990 for the
Hybrid JX 2WD manual, with
the auto retailing for $41,990.
Rounding out the range is the
$44,990 JLX AWD auto that
was fronted for this road test.
Some customisation – two-tone
body colours – is offered for an
additional $800.
Suzuki has developed a simple,
light, compact and affordable
Hybrid system consisting of
an integrated starter generator,
engine control module, and
an auxiliary power module.
This incorporates a lithium-ion
battery and sensors and a DC/
DC (48 volt to 12 volt) power
converter, all factory warranted
for five years. Powering the
Vitara Hybrid in conjunction
with a 48V self-charging mild
hybrid system is an updated take
on Suzuki’s familiar 1.4-litre
direct injection turbo engine, repurposed
for improved efficiency
fewer emissions.
In its new hybridized state,
the motor produces 95kW of
power at 5500rpm and the
maximum torque of 235Nm at
2000-3000rpm, up 6.8 per cent
compared to the standard Vitara.
Peak torque inches are up by
15Nm.
A newly designed turbocharger
has been specified to give better
efficiency and faster spooling
up response. Automatic stop/
starting saves fuel while the
lithium ion battery powers all the
electrics. The Hybrid’s Integrated
Starter Generator uses braking
energy to efficiently recharge the
battery.
In spite of the improvement
in fuel consumption and less
emissions, the Hybrid Turbo
retains the lively performance
that helped the Vitara build a
large fan base here.
What makes this engine a
real champion is the 235Nm of
torque that’s ready for action
from just 1500rpm. This lays
the foundations for almost
instantaneous throttle response,
and one of the most effortless
drives you will find in a compact
urban SUV in this price bracket.
It’s smoother and more refined
than the standard 1.4 turbo
which is expected to exit our
market as the Vitara range
here goes all-hybrid. A quick,
accurate, and sweet shifting
six-speed automatic is a very
agreeable gear-changing device
and a good match to the hybrid
engine.
There isn’t an abundance of
usable passenger space in a cabin
that always seems a bit tight
and light on headroom for taller
types, if they’re dispatched to the
back seat. One redeeming feature
is the 60/40 split folding rear seat
allowing you to maximize the
limited rear hatch cargo area. An
unexpected bonus is a cleverly
concealed floor in the rear hatch
compartment, perfect for keeping
valuables out of sight of potential
thieves.
The cabin is an obvious area
where the Vitara is showing its
age, and with an eight-year-old
vehicle that’s difficult to disguise.
The test car was let down on
quality by plenty of hard plastic
surfaces throughout the cabin.
It needs to be better, given its
$44,995 asking price.
One of the biggest and
most welcome changes is the
introduction of a range of
new safety technology that’s
instrumental in lifting the
Vitara’s safety game a good notch
or two. Heading an extensive
list of worthwhile safety tech
is rear cross traffic alert, blind
spot monitoring, lane departure
warning and adaptive cruise
have standard cruise control, a
seven-inch touchscreen display
and a reversing camera, satellite
navigation, Apple CarPlay,
keyless entry and climate control
air conditioning.
Handling feels more composed
and planted on the road than
any Vitara I have driven, and
there have been a few over the
years. Tortured and heavily
potholed and corrugated road
surfaces intent on dismembering
the suspension were quelled
by the Vitara’s tough and wellproven
suspension set-up.
Body roll is consistently kept
in check when unexpected
deviations in the road surface
are encountered. For a smallish
SUV, the ride is supple enough,
although the suspension can get
a bit vocal over high frequency
bumps in lower speed urban
driving.
Light, direct steering does
the job without being a class
standout. Giving the steering
more weight and a stronger dose
of road feel would help improve
on that ranking.
In the final wash up, the
Hungarian-made Vitara turbo
hybrid is an enjoyable drive,
versatile and with AWD well
suited to our gnarly roads and
weather. On the down side, fuel
economy isn’t much better than
the turbo motor model, making
it hard to justify the hybrid
variant’s premium pricing.
Exquisite Country Living
Sitting on 4 hectares of nicely divided paddocks is a stunning
red brick beauty of a home, perfect for family living with a
granny flat, and a detached double garage with a workshop on
either side.
This home is as practical as it is striking with a modern kitchen
boasting marble bench tops, a 90cm electric cooktop, double
dishwasher, neutral splashback tiles throughout the kitchen,
and a lovely bay window where an abundance of light floods
in. You have a large open plan living and dining room where you
are serviced with a wetback log burner, as well as a number
of night-store heaters located all around the home. Made for
family living, you have 4 double bedrooms, 4 toilets all up, 3
bathrooms, and storage all throughout. The master bedroom
contains a walk-in robe, en-suite, and access to the outdoors
whilst the upstairs bedroom is fully self contained. For peace
of mind, you have a double attached garage to the main house
with internal access and a granny flat which also has an internal
access garage. This flat contains a large walk-in robe, an open
plan living & dining area plus an en-suite bathroom.
Catering to all your entertaining needs, you have a separate
lounge set up as a bar with easy access to the outdoor
entertaining area with decking and an outdoor fire for those
kinds of nights. In addition, just off the main living area is a
sunroom to cater for the readers and relaxers.
With multiple entry points to the paddocks off Hoskyns road,
you have nicely divided paddocks of various sizes, electric
fencing, cattle yards, and a horse arena. This is the forever
home you have been waiting for.
Tai Tapu 83 Otahuna Road
Welcome to your dream lifestyle in Tai Tapu!
This property offers a perfect blend of comfort and country living. Boasting a thoughtfully designed 4-bedroom home,
recently upgraded shedding, 5.25 hectares of land and stunning views of the Port Hills. This home isn't your average
off plan build. Solid brick construction combined with a host of extra features offer both practicality and country
charm. What rural home would be complete without a veranda, oversized boot room and Belfast sink! The Master
suite and further 3 double bedrooms occupy separate wings, with each benefiting from French doors to the veranda,
overlooking the paddocks. Additional practical elements of the home include a tiled covered entrance, bedroom
soundproofing, a study nook and dedicated loft storage. Wool insulation, a large woodsman log burner & heat
transfer ensure those winter months are cosy, with a heatpump providing summer cooling. Outside a raised lawn
drops down to the paddocks. Currently utilised for horses and hay production, the high rate of grass growth provides
multiple yields or grazing opportunities. The property is fenced and secure with mixed deer fencing, and there's a
reliable water supply from a domestic and stock water bore. There is plenty of parking space, a big 4-car shed is ready
for your wheels or hobbies, and a 3-bay implement shed is handy for storage.
