PHOTOS: LINCOLN VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE Volunteers’ ‘toughest call’ • From page 1 “It was a pretty sad day. The last few days have been rough for everyone in the brigade,” said Steans. Since the tragedy last week, the brigade has been focusing on looking after each other, Steans said. “We had a debrief at the job, and after at the station, and some brigade-based catch ups over the weekend. A lot of members have been also checking in, and visiting others as well.” Lack’s service with the brigade spanned 12 years, four months and 19 days, from August 17, 2011 to January 4. Steans said he had known Lack since before he became a firefighter. He was kind and gentle. “He stands out as someone with a common-sense, practical approach and a calm demeanour. I can’t recall ever seeing him angry, even during moments when he might have been frustrated. He’s a fantastic person to work with, and we’ve been good mates from the start,” he said. Lack was passionate about photography which is how he became a volunteer firefighter. When the Lincoln station sounded, Lack would turn up and follow the crews to a fire which he would then photograph. He soon became their official brigade photographer and eventually joined the brigade as operational support. In 2016 he graduated as a firefighter and eventually worked his way up to become a senior firefighter. Lack also became a Fire and Emergency NZ staff member, having roles as a fire investigator, in the risk reduction team, logistics and as a member of the Urban Search and Rescue team. Steans said Lack quickly rose to senior level within the brigade, and undoubtedly had the potential to achieve even more. NEWS 5 Treatment plant fault causes water problems • By Daniel Alvey UPGRADES to Prebbleton’s water supply will be in place by the end of the year to stop a repeat of a recent failure. Residents were left with very little water pressure after a treatment plant fault on multiple days between Christmas and New Year. Deputy mayor and Prebbleton resident Malcolm Lyall said his water was still running but only at a trickle. “It was enough to make a cup of tea, but not have a shower,” Lyall said. Council head of operational delivery Gareth Morgan said both treatment plants had to be shut down. “There was a fault at one of the two treatment plants serving the town and this created a spike impacting the capacity of the other plant which shut it down requiring a manual restart,” Morgan said. Morgan said upgrades to the system are currently being worked on with the completion date set at the end of 2024. “We are in the process of upgrading the UV system and Reservoir storage for Prebbleton.” MP welcomes baby boy • By Daniel Alvey SELWYN MP Nicola Grigg welcomed her new baby boy Geordie on December 27 at the Rolleston Birthing Unit. “I cannot thank the team at the Te Whatu Ora-Waitaha Canterbury Rolleston birthing unit enough for the incredible care they gave us during our stay,” Grigg said on Facebook. Grigg, who has been the Wednesday January 10 2024 Selwyn Times Nicola Grigg Selwyn MP since 2020, will be on parental leave until March. Todd McClay will take over her role as Minister of State for Trade, and Associate Minister of Agriculture (Horticulture), while Louise Upston will be acting Minister for Women until Grigg returns to parliamentary duties. Her electorate office in Rolleston will open January 22.
