On 14 December, 14 hours of fundraising
commitment and mayhem
took place, for a great cause. Rural
telethon “The Big Feed” livestreamed
from Lincoln University, raising over
700 thousand mince and milk meals
for foodbanks across the country – a
stunning result.
The event is organised by Meat The
Need, a three-year-old charity that
is farmer-founded and farmer-led.
Produce, in the form of premium mince
and milk, is donated by farmers and
put into the hands of foodbanks and
community organisations, who have the
channels to distribute the support.
The charity accepts sheep, beef or deer,
and also milk. It works with livestock
reps such as Silver Fern Farms, and with
milk processors such as Fonterra and
Miraka, to streamline the process of how
donations are enacted. The website has
easy-to-use forms to make this happen.
Financial donations are also welcome
in advance of and on the day. Anyone
can donate a “Virtual Animal”, to their
choice of amount, by credit card or
internet banking.
Prep for next year!
Although the event happens on one
day, it takes a year’s worth of planning
and coordination. You can start
supporting this good cause now for 2024.
Here’s some options:
• Organise and register a fundraising
event – this can happen at any point
during the year. Fundraising events and
totals get special shout-outs during the
telethon, and you can even submit video
footage of your event.
• Rural business supporters are
welcomed – start discussions in your
workplace.
• Start talking with your livestock reps
or milk processors about what level of
practical donation you can make in the
coming year, and how to make it happen.
• Keep an eye on the frequently
updated Facebook page for Meat The
Need NZ, for more ideas.

of donations goes directly into feeding
families.
Meat the Need thanks its celebrity
hosts and all who participated and
donated, from the $3 texts to the
large-scale donations from the likes of
Fonterra and Miraka, Silver Fern Farms,
ANZCO Foods and FarmRight.
The Federated Farmers Board
personally donated $10,000 when its
President Wayne Langford, also cofounder
of Meat The Need, got a cow
tattoo!
