Kaltern. Beautiful Lake Kaltern.
And the delicious Kalterersee wines.
A lake widely praised as the warmest bathing lake of
the Alps. And a red wine pressed from the indigenous
Vernatsch grape variety, named after the lake itself,
and home to the fertile terroir which gives rise to
this unique regional speciality. They join together to
form not only a spectacular landscape, but also the
homeland, identity, and soul of this, one of the mostcharming
wine villages of South Tyrol. Besides the
beautiful lake and the delicious wines, you’ll also
find a host of picturesque traditions and day-to-day
customs that contribute to a rich culture centering
around enjoyment. The lake is like a mirror:
The spring is a time of rebirth; the summer is
characterized by Mediterranean “dolce vita”; the wine
harvest dominates the autumn; and the winter is a
time of quiet contemplation. In the course of the year,
there are countless opportunities to set out on foot
and explore the area, to cycle to your heart’s content,
to wander in awe amongst primeval forests, or to go on
adventures. And then there are the visitors who want to
experience a slower-paced vacation and to discover our
area’s culinary delights. All these facets can be enjoyed
on a daily basis – as well as on special days included
in the “Wine Highlights”. Our wine village has much
to offer. It’s like a symphony of cultural experiences,
culminating in the lake and the wine: Welcome in Kaltern.

The view towards the lake, surrounded by gently rolling hills covered
with vineyards, olive trees, and cypresses. The sparkling surface of the lake, crisscrossed
with little waves: A mirror image of Kaltern and its seasons.
The village
of Kaltern and
its seasons
Spring, summer, autumn and winter, you can sense it. In the
village of Kaltern, the clock ticks more slowly: We have more
than just four seasons. Come and let us tell you the whole story!
6 the village of kaltern and its seasons
A protective coating of ice for fragile buds. Especially cold nights help
the farmers by encasing delicate plants with a protective sheath. At the same time,
a natural work of art is created.
7
What you see: A village, a lake,
a mountain, and lots of vineyards.
The rows and rows of
grapevines score the landscape,
giving it contours and character. The village
is surrounded and permeated by a pristine natural
environment connecting it to the lake. Nature also
determines the rhythm of life here. The rhythm of
work as well as rest and recreation in our winegrowing
village. Come with us on a journey through the
year in our charming little winegrowing village!
The year begins. This is an unusual time to visit
Kaltern. Let’s call it the Ice-Skating Season. It’s a
magical time of year! At night, the mists rise and
ice crystals form on the tree branches. If you’re
lucky, in particular cold Januarys you can even go
ice-skating on the lake. What a treat, to go iceskating
while simultaneously enjoying the fairytale
scenery!
The colder time of year is also the perfect opportunity
to visit the South Tyrolean Wine Academy.
When winter draws to a close, the days get longer.
When you come visit Kaltern now, you can enjoy
a rare treat: the Leisure Season. Do what you want,
when you want it! Stroll along the vineyard trails or
wander along the shores of the lake. A time to leaf
through your favorite books and maybe study the
delicious culinary dishes we have to offer.
Setting out to conquer the oceans.
Gentle embrace of warm, soft water.
Elixir of life for pond creatures. Arena for
pirouettes. – The changeable Lake Kaltern.
For some people, their bike is their best friend.
And early spring is the best time for them to explore
Kaltern: The streets are almost empty of
traffic, and the temperatures just right for cyclists.
It’s Biking Season! One hears tell of cyclists who
can’t wait to start exploring the hilly countryside
of Kaltern and can be found among the vineyards
as early as February, and as late as November.
It’s one thing to boast of a cycling season that puts
the north to shame. It’s another thing to be able
to undertake pleasant strolls through the valley
in March and wander among the sea of blossoms
along the Path of Peace.
And just a few weeks later, the vineyards and apple
orchards are filling with flowers. It’s the Blossom
Season. Sparkling sunshine and a pristine natural
landscape beckon. When you stroll along the Wine
Trail now, you’ll experience a bewildering wealth
of blossoms.
This is when wine and hiking come together:
The Wine Hiking Day – organized by wein.kaltern,
a popular event for guests and visitors alike! And
families are especially welcome! In mid-spring –
summer can’t be far off! – the Season of Migratory
Birds slowly tapers off. The biotope at Lake Kaltern
is a stopping place for migratory birds during their
4,000-km-long trek from Africa to the north.
You can experience a magnificent array of avian
Lake Kaltern is a friendly lake.
Kind to the people and to the flora and fauna.
A natural habitat and delightful playground, too.

10 the village of kaltern and its seasons
It will soon be harvest-time. In late August, some grape varieties
are already ready to be picked. Determining the right time is a true art.
species: the Rock Pipit, the Ortolan, the Black-Headed
Gull, and many more. When the days grow long
and we can enjoy endless warm evenings, visitors
and locals come together in Kaltern to celebrate
life, enjoy delicious wines, fine dining, and good
friends. It’s the Season of Celebrations.
i
Maria von Mörl — As recorded, starting in
1836, Maria von Mörl began showing stigmata
– wounds on her hands and feet reminiscent
of the wounds of Christ. The “ecstatic virgin”
is alleged to have had the gift of prophecy,
and the ability to answer prayers. She is the
founder of the village cemetery.
Market Day — The Farmers’ Market of
Kaltern takes place once or twice a week:
Here you’ll find a variety of vegetables, eggs,
herbs, cheeses, flowers, juices, wines, and
much more.
The Fountain at the Market Square —
When there’s an event or festival to celebrate
in the village, you can be sure that something’s
going on at the Fountain.
If you love good wines, then our village is the place for
you! For the Kalterersee Chartered Wines awards
ceremony, our village is decorated all in red. But
sporting enthusiasts will be coming for a different
reason: To participate in the exciting village
triathlon.
And suddenly, it’s summertime! This is the Gourmet
Season, with a wide range of gourmet events,
festivals, open-air markets, tasting events, etc.
The perfect opportunity to discover one of our local
delicacies: Polenta (made with local ingredients).
The longest and most sun-drenched days demand
a little cool refreshment: Wine! Our White Wine
Festival at the central fountain located in our main
Market Square is the ideal time to sample many
a delicious vintage amid the sea of white decorations.
And then comes the time of year when only
one thing counts: Water and the afternoon wind.
It’s the Active Water Fun Season! Come take a dip
in the wonderfully soft water of our lake or glide
over its surface with your surfboard. Or maybe
you’d rather try out a foot-peddle boat? This is
the ideal time to enjoy typical Italian dolce vita with
a delicious ice cream and local wine.
When the sky is clear and the wind is still, you
might like to hike up to the mysterious Ice Holes and
cool off. Or you could visit the Mendel – accessible
by hiking or by taking the Mendel aerial cableway.
Soon afterwards, the whole village will be abuzz
with activity. It’s the Harvest Season. The weather
is still warm. The heady scent of ripening grapes
hangs in the air. In the morning, the cool forest
shadows beckon. Come explore the Rastenbach
Gorge. Conquer the Leuchtenburg – you’ll be rewarded
with fantastic views into the deep and into
the distance.
You’ve heard a lot about the fabulous hiking trails
here. But hiking reaches its zenith in the autumn.
You’ll be hard pressed to explore all 180 km of
hiking trails in just a few weeks. You can wander
along these paths alone or in groups. Children can
discover trees, leaves, and flowers. Some of the trails
feature steep inclines along some of the way. But in
any case, you’re guaranteed a unique experience.
And what better way to celebrate a successful hike
than to visit the Kaltern Wine Culinarium – where
wine and fine goods join hands. And there’s also
the Kaltern Pop Festival, with music to excite and
charm.
And once the harvest is over and the wine has
been safely stored in the wine cellar, it’s the Season
for Togetherness. That’s when friends join together
to celebrate the delightful local custom of “Törggelen”.
Nothing better expresses how close-knit
our village community is. Come taste the “New
Wine” and celebrate the bountiful harvest! You can
sample delicious local delicacies, enjoy the wine,
and become acquainted with the roasted chestnuts
of which we are so proud.
As the year draws to an end, we celebrate the Festival
of Lights. During this season, our little village
squares and lanes are decorated with candles and
fir wreaths. We have our own charming little Advent
Market where friends meet and enjoy the cheerful
but peaceful atmosphere. A reverent hush settles
over our quaint village. It’s a time to make quiet
discoveries. Amidst the Giant Redwood trees, our
14 churches prepare for the Holy Season. But the
Cinema Festival at the train station ensures that
this time is not without at least a little excitement.
And so the year closes in Kaltern. A new year of funfilled
seasons will soon begin! Each season has
its own flair, its own colors and scents – its own
mood. The perfect opportunity to re-discover our
wonderful village. Come and immerse yourself in
our down-to-earth culture! Experience the beautiful
landscape! Enjoy the merriment and quaint
hustle-and-bustle of an authentic South Tyrolean
village! Your time in this idyllic place will reward
you with memories for a lifetime!
to the boom in fruit cultivation in South Tyrol beginning in
the mid-19th century. By 1950, the Kaltern Böhmer had advanced
to become one of the main varieties in South Tyrol.
The flesh is nearly snow-white in color, with a “rose-apple” taste
– this explains the name “Rosa di Caldaro”. Today, there are still
the hole to see the clock tower | In the year 1760, clocks were
still rarities in Kaltern, and the church clock tower was invaluable to
all the townsfolk who needed to know what time it was. Ignaz von
Pach was tired of constantly having to run out onto the street in order
to see what time of day it was, so he obtained permission from his
neighbor to install a round opening in the corner of that neighbor’s
house to provide him with an unobstructed view from his office desk.
This opening in the building is still visible today, and is a testament
to the many unusual and amusing stories that are told in and about
Kaltern.
pergolas | Kalterersee wines are
made from Vernatsch, a grape variety
native to this area. This grape has had
a tremendous impact upon the wine
village of Kaltern and its people. The
typical pergolas on which it is cultivated
dominate the landscape. With a
roof-like shape, the pergolas provide
cool shade on hot days.
warm holes | Visiting the famed “Ice Holes”
is a fascinating experience in the summertime.
By the same token, in the colder season, the socalled
“Warm Holes” are certainly worth a closer
look. Several openings in the earth are located
in the area of the so-called “Rosszähne” (“Denti
di Cavallo” in Italian) – jagged rocky pinnacles
adorning the steep cliffs on the eastern edge of
the southern Mitterberg. When ambient temperatures
are very low, one can observe columns of
water vapor rising from the holes. The largest
temperature differential ever measured between
these vaporous emanations and the surrounding
air amounted to 21 °C.

Lake
Kaltern
Cosmopolitan, timeless –
the warmest bathing lake
of the Alps: A friendly lake
that is both a natural habitat
and a delightful playground.
When coming from the north,
you are treated to a splendid
view of Lake Kaltern,
situated to the south of the
village, amidst a unique, Mediterranean landscape.
With a surface area of 103 hectares and the approx.
44 hectares of reeds hugging its shores, it’s the
largest natural lake of South Tyrol. This belt of
reeds is South Tyrol’s largest and most-important
wetland, and has even regional significance. With
an average depth of 5.5 meters, Lake Kaltern is
one of the shallowest lakes in the Alpine region –
which is a big advantage! Because it’s so shallow,
it begins to warm up in early spring, and affords
pleasant bathing temperatures of up to 28 °C by
mid-summer. These pleasant bathing temperatures
typically continue until far into the autumn.
Gorge – which, like Lake Kaltern, is one of five biotopes
in Kaltern and a great place to undertake an
adventurous, romantic hike. With an age of about
12,000 years, Lake Kaltern is a relatively young
lake, and was formed at the close of the last Ice
Age. Initially, the lake was larger, but it gradually
shrunk in size, with reeds colonizing the shores as
the waters receded.
The “Natura 2000” Nature Protection Area. Lake
Kaltern – South Tyrol’s largest natural body of
water – is a stopping-off point for 250 species of
birds, and about 30 species of dragonflies are at
home here. These wetlands are entirely within the
“Natura 2000” European network of nature protection
areas, and the belt of reeds on the lake’s south
shore has been placed under special protection as a
biotope by the province of South Tyrol. The wetland
meadows, belt of reeds, and marshes encompass a
vast spectrum of flora. Especially the alluvial forests
represent a true natural paradise, and are home to
many rare species of plants and animals. In some
cases, these areas constitute their last sanctuary.
A geologically young lake. At an altitude of 214
meters above sea-level, Lake Kaltern is six meters
below the Etsch. The main tributary – the Rastenbach
– flows down from the Mendel Mountains. It is
known also for its association with the Rastenbach >
Surrounded by vineyards, the mighty
It’s a paradise for many – a lake for everyone.
The harvesting of the reeds – which interested
visitors can observe if they want – likewise makes
a contribution to preserving this unique habitat:
It helps to prevent rotting and eutrophication.
It also combats the overgrowth of trees.
And amidst it all: A pond. Visitors who have strolled
along the jetties in the belt of reeds already know
that Lake Kaltern also has a pond area. No, not
a pond in the lake: Rather, a pond in the belt of
reeds. It’s small and inconspicuous, but serves an
important biological function. In the summertime,
the water is heated up, as a consequence of which
its oxygen content sinks. The water evaporates,
causing the water level to drop. By the same token,
the concentration of dissolved mineral substances
in the remaining water rises. This enables various
water plants – from the micro-algae all the way up to
the bullrushes – to thrive. They, in turn, represent
a source of nutrition for animal life.
Hiking, strolling, gourmet dining, and culture. One
can stroll, jog, cycle, or even push a baby carriage
around the lake – an exhilarating, relaxing, contemplative,
or exciting experience, depending upon your
frame of mind. While circumnavigating the lake,
you’ll discover all kinds of different perspectives,
different views of the lake, the mountains, the
looming Leuchtenburg, the village, the meadows
full of apple trees, the hills covered with vineyards.
Along the way, you’ll come to three different information
panels dedicated to specific themes, where
you can pause, rest, and learn interesting things
about wine, about “Plent” (a delicious local dish
based on cornmeal), and about apples. And just
as the wine trail gives you insights into the local
wine-making sector, the trip around the lake will
everything else you might still need for an enjoyable
Nature
wherever
I look
In Kaltern at the lake we live with
nature. Come with us on a special
nature experience: a morning hike
through the Rastenbach Gorge.
Dawn breaks. I quietly close the
door behind me while you still
slumber. You said that you’d
never be able to get out of bed
that early. But I did. Adventure is now on the agenda!
I’m out on the veranda. It’s cool, but my morning
tea warms my bones. And there it is: Lake Kaltern!
The inky blackness of night has already retreated
somewhat as the first streaks of sunshine light up
the landscape. A flock of birds fly in formation
high in the sky.
I take your bike down the road to St. Josef.
Yesterday, you had cycled it up the mountain. The
cool wind rushes against my cheeks as I speed away.
I feel goosebumps on my calves. Another beautiful
day has started – and I’m ready to enjoy it! Once
I arrive in St. Josef, I park my bike and take a look >
Saunter among the vineyards,
discover the historical names of
the individual parcels, and experience
the partitioning of the
wine-growing sector in Kaltern.
It’s all possible along the Wine
Trail.
24 nature wherever i look
around. The world is still and peaceful: The lake, the
vineyards, the Leuchtenburg, the distant horizon.
My mission: To cycle a stretch, collect myself,
and then lose myself. My way passes through the
Rastenbach Gorge – a marvelous place I’ve heard
a lot about both from the locals and the Kaltern
podcast. They say that the morning in the Gorge is
something really special. The sun has arrived. The
surroundings are bathed in a soft glow, all the way
to the lake. And now I’m headed for Altenburg/
Castelvecchio. The forest envelops me and closes
the sky above me.
The air is heavy with moisture and full of life.
I cross little bridges and pathways. I inhale and exhale.
I stop and look around me. I feel the water on
my skin and in my hair. I hear the water bubbling,
splashing, roaring, dripping. Twigs breaking. Birds
chirping. I see moss adorning rocks and boulders
and climbing up tree trunks. It’s a fairytale setting.
Shafts of light stream down through the forest,
giving it the appearance of a cathedral.
Lost in deep thoughts, I forget about the bat cave
that’s supposed to be located somewhere around
here. The Great Horseshoe Bat and the Greater
Mouse-Ear Bat are at home here. I’d love to get
a look at them. Then I walk into the light. There’s >
The reward for your efforts: After countless stairs and steps,
an impressive view of Lake Kaltern, the “Unterland” district of South Tyrol, and beyond.
26 nature wherever i look
A biking paradise requires: friendly weather, bike paths along a lake,
in the valley, on mountains and hills, rest areas with a view and culinary delights.
Just like the bike paradise Kaltern.
An adventure. Sustainable. Just 12 minutes from the wine village, crawling up
the mighty Mendel: the Mendel Funicular – a marvelous feat of engineering.
a trail leading over the rocks to a viewing platform.
The lake, the vineyards, and the forest: It looks like
a painted landscape. And finally, my destination:
The ruins of St. Peter’s Church. I sit down and rest
for a bit. Here in the Rastenbach Gorge, I’m surrounded
by a pristine nature. Everything is in harmony,
and I feel balanced.
Originally, my goal was to go to the Tschanderhof
farmstead above Altenburg/Castelvecchio. Yesterday,
while nipping a drink at the bar, I overheard
someone talking about lime-burning in South Tyrol,
and about the old lime-kiln that had recently been
put back into operation.
I’ll take a look at that another time, and I’ll take
my bike. Or I’ll hike along the Path of Peace from
the St. Anton sports zone. I sit and continue to
breathe in the serenity, while thinking of you.
I’ll be back soon.
It’s located at the Mitter
Wine events
in Kaltern
Come to this charming little wine village and
discover wine’s many facets. It’s a crescendo of
enjoyable events that you will long remember.
Kaltern–ThehomeofKalterersee
wines and the location of famed
Lake Kaltern. The Kalterersee
is red, and best enjoyed when
slightly chilled. The other is a body of water – the
warmest bathing lake in all the Alps. The same name,
but not the same thing. Is that a contradiction?
Not at all! That’s because they are both facets of
one place: the charming wine village of Kaltern. Together,
they contribute to the wonderful identity of
Kaltern – and are its “soul”, so to speak. Here, wine
is regarded as a cultural treasure. In the vineyards
surrounding the lake, where the best Kalterersee
wine grapes are cultivated, and where everyday life
is marked by a deep appreciation of good cuisine
and the enjoyment of fine wines in cheerful company.
And throughout the year, numerous select
events are held during which these fine wines can
be celebrated and enjoyed. And just as spring is
a promise of the rebirth of life, the Kaltern Wine
Strolling Day represents the start of a very special
journey through the world of wine. Besides the fruits
of Mother Nature, visitors to our wine village can
also gain a greater appreciation of our history and
unique architecture – referred to as the “Überetsch
architectural style”. Parallel to that, contemporary
architecture has also gained access to the wine
cellars of Kaltern. And what about the Kalterersee?
The unique Kalterersee Charta wines reflect the
spirit of the wine village of Kaltern like no other.
>
The most-auspicious day of celebration for the Kalterersee wine:
A splendid opportunity to taste and test this superlative wine – together with other
red wines from the wine village, gourmet foods, and lilting music.
30 wine events in kaltern
Wine and fine dining go great together – regardless of the season
or occasion. The everyday culture here is marked by good cheer, and the people
like to share both their joy and their wine.
As far as the eye can see:
the vineyards with their rows
of vines. They reach from
the village and its districts
down to the lake and to the
edge of the forest. What we
live from and for.
These wines perfectly embody the characteristic
way of life of the people of this region. If spring
marks the re-awakening of Nature, and summer
represents its culmination, then the mellower rays
of sunshine characteristic of late-summer are the
first hint that winter is not far off. This is when
Nature garbs herself in a riotous display of colors
ranging from the deepest azures of the sky and the
stunning crimsons and golds of the fields, forests,
and vineyards. We may feel overtaken by a gentle
wistfulness, but we can console ourselves with
two more first-class wine events: the Kaltern Wine
Days and the Kaltern Wine Culinarium. Between
the great wine events held here annually you will
marvel at the cheerful staccato of wine tastings,
gourmet festivals, professional wine seminars and
guided tours through vineyards, classes conducted
by the South Tyrolean Wine Academy for laypersons,
all the way up to fascinating visits to the South
Tyrolean Wine Museum. Kalterersee wines are part
of the heart and soul of Kaltern and Lake Kaltern.
8
districts belong to Kaltern. In South Tyrol, so-called “districts”
are usually distinct settlements that were later absorbed into a
single community. Kaltern includes the following districts: St. Josef
am See (Kalterer See), Kaltern Markt, Mitterdorf, Unterplanitzing,
St. Anton-Pfuss, Oberplanitzing, Altenburg, St. Nikolaus.
27m
circumference of 2.9 meters or more.

For comparison: All the vineyards in South Tyrol
together have an area of 5,455 hectares.
Because of the danger of collapsing,
the St. Nikolaus Church – which dates
back to the 16th century – was given
a separate clock tower (in 1880).
34
Customs,
habits,
things
Discovering the big in the small means
looking closely. A view into everyday life
in our village shows how we really are.
Filling us with pride: the “Überetsch architectural style”,
named after our area, the land above the Adige River on the valley floor.
Italian master builders brought it with them in the sixteenth century
– and we think that can be seen.
36 customs, habits, things
Kaltern at the lake is good ground for contemporary architecture.
It perpetuates our traditional understanding of the good life
and interprets it in a contemporary way.
37
Kaltern boasts 14 churches, the
Wine Museum, galleries, the delightful
Überetsch architectural
style, and a set of stag antlers
dating back to the Stone Age. Here, you can experience
a rich and varied culture! We are reliable
custodians of these cultural treasures – for the
pleasure and edification of guests and locals, alike!
That’s one facet of culture.
The other facet: Viewing objects of everyday life,
and thus recognizing the “everyday” in the objects.
Objects? By that we mean customs, habits, and
things. An especially suitable method of experiencing
life in our charming village.
We suggest you try the following: Just glance at
these things – but not too closely! Just sit and relax
and watch village life taking place around you.
The best places to do this? The village square, the
little lanes and passageways around it, and Lake
Kaltern itself.
You might then focus your gaze on the individual
components of this real-life mural. Something blue
dashes across the square: A blue-aproned innkeep-
er. Men in aprons! Many a visitor might find this
unusual, but for the locals, it’s the most ordinary
thing in the world.
#1 things
For example: The blue “apron”. A blue fabric apron
for men. It is derived from old country-style living,
but it’s still widely worn today. Traditional and very
practical at the same time.
Then there are the shoppers, the business people,
and the “early morning” people. Always popping in
and out! If you follow them, you might find them
standing at a bar – at 10 o’clock in the morning!
#2 habits
For example: A quick cuppa. You’ll need about ten
minutes to properly enjoy a late-morning espresso
in the bar. A brief interruption, a moment to relax,
maybe for a chat. Important village news can be
shared. An analog form of “social media”.
Are you beginning to see a trend here? (The Red
Dot* will give you a hint): Rustic traditions and modern
outlooks, Alpine lifestyles and Mediterranean
dolce vita are the “talk of the town” in Kaltern.
>
* The Red Dot has a special meaning in Kaltern. It’s a symbol
for wein.kaltern, the quality initiative of the wine industry
of Kaltern – that sets new standards in South Tyrol.
38 customs, habits, things
#3 habits
For example: A drop of the grape before noon.
An elegant white wine – usually a Pinot Blanc –
at the proper temperature delights the senses and
readies the stomach for a hearty lunch.
Enjoying a relaxing afternoon, contemplating
the gentle rhythms of life in the village, casually
observing the habits of the local. You can sit and
sip a wine, go hiking, or jump on your bike –
all depending upon your mood.
Watch and learn how the locals live – what better
way for first-time visitors to approach Kaltern. And
to understand what they’re saying would be even
better. “Easier said than done!”
#4 customs
For example: You’ll frequently hear the locals using
quaint idioms and colorful expressions. Every region
has its own accent and local expressions. But our
sub-dialect blends Italian words and phrases with
delightful German sayings and a soft melody that
is distinctive and pleasant.
Wherever you find wine, you’ll also find good
companionship. Kaltern conducts festivals, celebrates
wine, and enjoys music: At concerts, during
the Kaltern Pop Festival, the Seespiele Music Festival
on the lake, the village festivals, the wine events,
and at the markets. You might want to also experience
the charming local custom of Törggelen.
#5 customs
For example: Törggelen. A joyous tradition celebrated
in the autumn, when the recently harvested wine
has undergone a brief period of fermentation and
has just become ready to drink. With a healthy
portion of South Tyrolean bacon and smoked meats
from local production. With dumplings, select
meats, homemade sausages, roasted chestnuts,
and delicious pastries.
Customs, habits, things: They show how we live,
what we dream about, and who we are. And we love
sharing our bounty with our guests.
|
The Alpine and the Mediterranean
mix in the everyday life of Kaltern.
Especially in the cuisine. We enjoy the
traditional Tyrolean Marende snack
one day, Italian antipasti the next.
And sometimes both at the same time.
i
Sacred Heart Fire — On Sacred Heart
Sunday (the 3rd Sunday after Pentecost),
we light fires on our mountain
peaks. They are a symbol of the renewal
of the Sacred Heart Oath of 1796, when
the province of Tyrol – then threatened
by Napoleon’s troops – called upon the
Sacred Heart of Jesus for protection.
The Überetsch architectural style
(16th century) — It has placed its stamp
upon the appearance of Kaltern. Its
chief elements: Parapets, oriel windows,
framed doors and arched windows, twin
windows with middle columns, arcades,
loggias, open stairways, and inner
courtyards.
Plent — This local delicacy made from
maize has been able to assert its proud
position in the cuisine of Kaltern – with
innovative and modern interpretations
of this traditional dish.
South Tyrolean Wine Museum — Wine
presses, goblets and drinking cups,
pitchers and wine barrels, various other
tools and equipment, and a demonstration
vineyard – come experience the
history of wine for Kaltern!
Wine in all its facets permeates the village. Sometimes barely noticeable,
sometimes overwhelmingly. It’s a part of our culture, day-to-day traditions,
and identity. And yet always looking to the future!
