Winds of change atAir Cadets No 88
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Forty Air Cadets of the No 88 (District
of Waimakariri) Squadron took their
final parade of 2023 in midDecember.
But this was morethan just an end of
year parade, as guests looked on, the
winds of change blew across the
Rangiora Airfield as Squadron Leader
Tania Mackinnon took the parade,
beforepassing the ceremonial Patu to
Flying Officer Jesmond Micallef, who
will be taking command of the
squadron.
Mayor Dan Gordon inspected the
cadets on parade as the guest
reviewing officer.
He said he was proud of the
council’s association with the cadets,
which afew years back he had
bestowed the name of Waimakariri
District to.
No 88 Squadron, affectionately
known as ‘the Mighty 88’ has been
parading at Rangiora airfield since
October 2015, when the squadron was
first established.
Squadron Leader Tania Mackinnon,
assisted by afew dedicated officers,
were at the beginning.
Through dedication, hard workand
unwavering supportfrom the local
community, in particular the airfield
community at the Rangiora Airfield,
Tania nurtured and guided the
development of the unit as it rapidly
grew and expanded.
‘‘Watching the unit form and grow
and achieve so much has been atruly
humbling experience,’’ she told the
gathering.
While Tania has relinquished the
role of Unit Commander, she is not
leaving it. Her new role will allow her
to concentrate on mentoring and
training the advanced cadets, and
passing on her knowledge of
leadership, acquired over more than
two decades as an Officer in the New
Zealand Cadet Forces.
Flying Officer Jesmond Micallef,
himself acadet at the unit when it
started in 2016, now takes command.
He is looking forward to the challenge
of building on the success of the unit
and navigating the changing
environment of an organisation that is
directed at developing New Zealand’s
successful leaders of tomorrow.
He is looking to foster and enhance
the community links, and continue to
develop, and enable, selfdisciplined,
confident and responsible young New
Zealanders.
Cadets will return for the first
parade of 2024 on February 8.
If you are aged between 13 and 15
years, enjoy the spirit of adventure,
teamwork and community service, and
are looking for opportunities to
develop your skills in leadership,
bushcraft, aviation, navigation,
marksmanship and firearms safety, (to
name afew), go to recruitment
evenings held throughout February,
starting February 8.
The unit parades every Thursday
during school terms from 6.30pm to
9pm at the Rangiora Airfield, near the
Canterbury Aero Club buildings.
Antiques aplenty
By SHELLEY TOPP
The owner of anew antiques business
in Rangiora says rents in the town’s
CBD are too high and it is cheaper to
buy abuilding to trade from than rent
premises in the town.
Twine Antiques owner Sandy
Williams opened her new shop at 33
High Street last November, and says
trading has been good so far.
The building was formerly
occupied by Graham and Sons
Flooring Specialists, and became
available to buy when it closed late
last year.
Sandy formerly ran Twine Antiques
and Collectables from the Old School
Collective at Waikuku before
deciding to close it and retire.
However, she soon ‘‘became bored’’
and when the large High Street
building became available she
decided to buy it, and reopen her
businessinRangiora.
There are two large show rooms
selling ahuge range of indoor items
in one section, and outdoor ‘‘bits and
bobs’’ in another.
``I like to stock anything old and
interesting —things that are useful’’
she says. ‘‘I like things people can
use.’’
These include wicker laundry
baskets, watering cans, garden seats,
garden gates and arange of vintage
gardening tools which have proved
popular.
There is also all manner of
homeware on show including rolling
pins, blankets, linen, lounge suites,
dining suites, cutlery, glassware,
crystalware, vases and even buzzy bee
wooden toys.
The shop is open on Wednesday
through to Saturday from 10am to
5pm.
Sandy, who lives in Rangiora, says
she is always on the lookout to buy
house lots, small or large.
